What's the biggest boxing robbery of all time.
I am sure that there will be many different opinions on this subject but I have to go with Pernell Whitaker Vs Julio Ceasar Chavez even though I am sure the Oscar fans will say the Tito fight.

Re: What's the biggest boxing robbery of all time.
jeff fenech vs azamah nelson was the biggest robbery of all time.
fenech was never the same after that bout and was hammered in the rematch by nelson.
-
Re: What's the biggest boxing robbery of all time.
Whitaker-Chavez
Hearns-Leonard II

Re: What's the biggest boxing robbery of all time.
Lewis-Holyfield 1 being a draw.

Re: What's the biggest boxing robbery of all time.
It will always be Mayorga-Spinks for me. It robbed Mayorga of his hard earned world titles and ran him out of the Welter weight division. It was a disgusting robbery.

Yes it was former World Champ Carlos "Famoso" Hernandez and the loss brought his wife to tears. Judges oughta be real proud of themselves. Now THAT was a ROBBERY my friend.

Re: What's the biggest boxing robbery of all time.
Depends what you mean by robbery, do you also include fixes?
If you include fixes, then it has to be Escalera/Everett; out and out robberies that have not been proven fixed, Ramirez/WhitakerI, screams out.
-
Re: What's the biggest boxing robbery of all time.
PAC - JMM being draw. Judge admits the mistake.
-
Re: What's the biggest boxing robbery of all time.
Jones was robbed in the Olympics.
-
Re: What's the biggest boxing robbery of all time.
Holy Field - Lewis 1
Chavez-Whitaker
Chavez-Randall 2 (the rematch was simply to give back chavez his belt)
-
Re: What's the biggest boxing robbery of all time.
DE LA HOYA VS. FELIX STURM

Re: What's the biggest boxing robbery of all time.
To be a robbery, surely the loser had to have won without doubt - can't say that aout a lot these fights
How about Jimmy Vincent v David Barnes - (only a few people will know the fight I mean)
-
Re: What's the biggest boxing robbery of all time.
ones that spring to mind
nelson v fenech I
spinks v holmes II
brodie v jorrin

Oggie it seems like Pernell Whitaker was robbed his whole career, against Chavez, Ramirez, and De La Hoya.

Agreed.
The De La Hoya one was not quite as bad as the others, but I still thought Pernell won the fight comfortably... quite remarkable when you consider he was past his prime and fighting a young, future 6 weight world champion and hall of famer.
His only legit loss that I have seen was his loss against Felix Trinidad and, well, he was WAY past his best then and on a drugs assisted downward spiral. :(
The man was incredible. At lightweight, I would have never bet against him... and that includes a match with Duran!

Cheers Hulk :coolclick:, yeah that was the most disgraceful robbery ive ever seen. And Pernell's ones even though Im too young to have seen them live, when I watched them recently were ridiculous, particularly Chavez in my opinion.

that wasn't a robbery, it could have gone either way. Hearns-Leonard II was a robbery coz hearns dominated and still couldn't get the decision.

Delahoya-Sturm

Re: What's the biggest boxing robbery of all time.
Yeah, there have been many odd decisions. There are many instances that show the 'dog eat dog' and the slightly unsavoury air that often permeates this great sport.
So, I would like to bring forward Jack Dempsey - Tommy Gibbons for the delectation of the discerning members of this forum. And also Baller 27 as he is, indeed, a monster for his weight.
This fight ranks as one of the most extraordinary heavyweight title fights in history. Shelby is a small hamlet tucked away in a remote corner of the very remote and desolate state of Montana. The good (and gullible) citizens of Shelby (population 2,500) read that Montreal had offered the then Heavyweight Champ, Jack Dempsey, $100,000 to stage a championship fight in Montreal.
Rich on the proceeds of mining, and desperate to get their small town on the map, Shelby decided to offer £200,000. This is the equivalent to some $20million today. One thing led to another and the fight was on.
Tommy Gibbons the challenger, desperate for a title shot, agreed to appear for little more than a pittance - the story goes that, with expenses, he was out of pocket at the end of the whole sorry affair. Shelby actually built a 40,000 seater stadium for the fight. They sold 7,000 tickets.
The fight was delayed an hour because the referee refused to enter the ring unless he was paid up front in cash.
Gibbins was a fast and talented fighter who had the style to give Dempseytrouble in the early rounds, but Jack's power and aggression eventually won through. Amazingly (when you look at Dempsey's KO record) Gibbons was still standing at the end of 15 rounds: the first man to do that against the great Manassa Mauler. Since the referee was Dempsey's friend and was appointed by Dempsey, it takes little imagination to work out who got the decision!
Staging the event cost the townspeople over $1m (in 1923!!!!). They spent so much money on building the stadium that they could not afford to insure it, and needless to say it burnt to the ground a month after the fight. The townsfolk tried to recoup a bit of their investment through the showing of a film of the fight. Accordingly, they gave the film to a distributor named Grossman, along with a £1,000 advance. Needless to say, the film and Grossman were never seen again.
Shelby went bankrupt.

Actually I've got the fight on dvd as part of a espn boxset. It only shows the highlights so I can't really comment decisively but the commentator (modern dubbed over) says that Gibbons does a great job of frustrating Dempsey and spoiling but does not even suggest in the slightest that Gibbons does enough to win.
He goes on to say that Dempsey has got an easy(unanimous) decision in a hard fought fight and that Gibbons held and spoiled his way to the end.
Of the other fights hardly any were real robberies, how can a draw be a robbery?
Some REAL robberies although not necessarily big fights that spring to mind are Roy Jones in the Olympic Final, Daemon Kelly's recent fight against Simone Maludrottu and (don't laugh it was a terrible decision) the contender rematch between Anthony (best Dad and great K-Mart employee) Bonsante against Jesse Brinkley. I had that fight 5 rounds to 0 to Bonsante as did all the commentary team, the crowd, everybody. How that went to Brinkley I'll never know..........

I didn't mean the fight result was a robbery - Doc Kearns (Dempsey's promoter) set the whole thing up as an elaborate, low risk, scam - knowing that Shelby would not be able to pay. That is highway robbery that even Don King would be proud of!
