Feared boxer seeks big payday

He's on everybody's list of candidates. Oscar De La Hoya mentions him. So does Floyd Mayweather Jr. They acknowledge him in a crowd. Shake his hand. Praise him. But they won't fight him.
Antonio Margarito finds himself in a lonely corner of boxing limbo that has trapped and tested other good fighters. Middleweight champion Winky Wright occupied it before him.
Margarito has a title and fans, but not the kind of opponent who gives him a chance at the acclaim and money at the top of the sport's income scale.
"It's definitely upsetting," said Margarito, the World Boxing Organization's welterweight champion, who is in Phoenix to help promoter Steve Ayala stage his third card tonight at Celebrity Theatre.
But it's not new.
Margarito (33-4, 24 knockouts) has been battling for a spot in line for a couple of years, at least since a second-round stoppage of Hercules Kyvelos at Dodge Theatre in January 2004.
Until then, he was just another anonymous champ in the sea of acronyms. Since then, an unscientific poll in Spanish-speaking media has pegged him as one of Mexico's best fighters. In terms of box-office appeal, that makes him impossible to ignore.
The fans' respect for him also could explain why some of the biggest names won't fight him. He's a rough, tough battler who figures to be there against a De La Hoya or a Mayweather throughout 12 bruising rounds.
"That is the reason they won't fight him," said his manager, Sergio Diaz, who translated Margarito's Spanish for the English-speaking media.
Mayweather turned down a reported $8 million to fight Margarito, who is represented by Top Rank. Mayweather, who paid Bob Arum $750,000 to buy his way out of a Top Rank contract, is hoping for even bigger money against De La Hoya.
But De La Hoya's trainer is Mayweather's father, and Floyd Mayweather Sr. says he won't let that fight happen. But Margarito is still there.
"I always will be," said Margarito, who is scheduled for a bout on Aug. 12, possibly against Sharmba Mitchell.
In fact, Mayweather told him that it would happen one day when they met after De La Hoya's victory over Ricardo Mayorga on May 6.
"I expected a different reaction from him," Margarito said. "He saw me, recognized me, told me he respected me and said we would meet in the future."But I can't wait around for him. I have to stay busy. I have to continue fighting and I have to be patient.
"I don't have any choice."
Margarito only can hope that in time, nobody else does either.
The parts I highlighted were surprising to me as I thought he was fightinClottey but I'd rather see how he deals with Sharmba first and second,I am really sarting to believe that after the business with Oscar is finished,Lil Floyd will fight Tony! Margarito already has his respect,that's a good sign and shows Floyd recognises him. Go floyd!

Feared? Why fear him? He's good but he can easily be hit, and he did get beat by Daniel Santos.

The Santos fight was on cuts.
I agree that he's not UNBEATABLE - just the toughest task at 147. He's the highest risk for the least reward. Floyd has the name, Gatti has the fans, Margarito just has a belt and the ability to completely de-rail your career.
Perfect guy for Louis Collazzo.

haha,love the description,CoolClick! I agree 100%,of course Margarito is not unbeatable BUT due to his awkward style,power and always coming through whatever you have attitude,he would give them all hell.

The thing is...he did hurt Hatton...no one ever dreamed that.
I got a lot more respect for Collazo. In fact...I'm just damned impressed with him.
Now...onto Margarito...what will you all say if Mitchell beats him?

I would be amazed if Mitchell was even willing to get in the ring with Margarito. If PBF can put him on the floor with a body punch Margarito doesnt have much to worry about.

I thought he was fighting Clottey too but I think even though Clottey is more dangerous,Sharmba is a name of sorts so would prefer to see that. Also,IF sharmba beats him,I'm taking my bags,changing my name and ID and running as far away from here as possible! Seriously,I would be dissappointed but I'd still have faith in Tony,why,because I know it would just be an off night and who could blame him. You are SUPPOSED to be fighting P4P number 2 Mayweather,instead you get Sharmba!!?!
Margarito's punches also have not only cumulative effect(Lujan)but devestating power at the same time(Gomez etc) it's weird!

That sentence does not make sense son and secondly.....where has an opponent ran from Margarito to say how he would handle it? Lujan is the closest and I think you need to go and watch the Collazo and Hatton fight again,I did not alot of movement from Collazo!

No its not,as I hva posted a couple in my thread and even then,his lateral mvement is ok,nothing brilliant firstly and again,my brother cocky cockney put it best,CC bro.

Margarito would love it if Collazo was willing to stand and trade like he was for large parts towards the end of the fight. Margarito certainly wouldnt be rocked like Ricky was.

Firsty why the hell is he fighting Mitchell, and i remember people slagging Hatton for fighting a young current Champ, but Tony is fighting a 140 has been who has been bashed about by KT and Floyd in the last 12/18 months?? Surely there is better opponents out there for Tony?
Anyway i could see some real damage for Mitchell getting KO'D within 4 rnds.

Its shows accuracy is just as important as power, any boxer has enough power to land a shot on the chin and get at least a wobble, Collazo would give ANY 147 fighter trouble Collazo is one tough cookie. IMO He'd beat zab, he'd take floyd to the wire, and give tony a hell of a fight, ultimately losing though, hatton proved you can make him fade.

Collazo - Judah. Could be a good fight I would have to say it depended on which Judah showed up on the night.
Collazo - PBF. PBF wins by a landslide UD.
Collazo - Margarito. Collazo gets peeled of the canvas in the 4th round. The biggest mismatch out the 3

DIsagree totally. Just because Collazo gave Hatton hell does not mean he would trouble lil Floyd(in no way shape or form) and same with Tony.His punches looked pitter patter,he didn't look terribly powerful,he just looked ok. Also,Hatton did not make him fade at all,I believe Collazo was coming on strong and the last round could have been a 10-8. People are over hyping Collazo and under rating Hatton too much.

Micthell is a name of sorts and Margarito has been fighting dangerous guys all his career(Cintron,Gomez,Martinez)it's just they are not well known and it has not got him far so why fight Clottey(another dangerous hungry fighter)?
