What Great Fighters Were KO'd? Not TKO'd, But KO'd?
Of all the great fighters who suffered losses, who are ones that got knocked out, not had a fight stopped, but were on the canvas and got counted out? Even though a TKO counts as a KO, it's not the same. Guys have been TKO'd and didn't even get decked. Other's got dropped, but reached their feet and the ref stopped it. The two biggest names I can think of are Oscar (from Hopkins) and Duran (from Hearns). Also Roy courtesy of Glen Johnson comes to mind. Who else is there?

Re: What Great Fighters Were KO'd? Not TKO'd, But KO'd?
Henry Armstrong, Sammy Langford, Georges Carpentier, Wilie Pep, Sandy Saddler, Jimmy Wilde, Roberto Duran and Archie Moore are all in my finest 10 fighters ever, and have all been KO'd in a pro fight.

I agree, Joe Walcott got hit with that right by Rocky and sank to his knees. His arm was stuck on the rope and that was the only thing that kept him up when he was unconcious! He wasn't goin nowhere-that was a KO.

Re: What Great Fighters Were KO'd? Not TKO'd, But KO'd?
Jack Johnson was counted out.

Johnson didn't throw that fight, he was too old to beat that guy.
Floyd Patterson got KO'd
Ingmar Johanssen got KO'd
Sonny Liston got KO'd...that one by Martin was wicked!

Gerald McClellan took the 10 count against Nigel Benn, even though he did it on a knee and got up.

Re: What Great Fighters Were KO'd? Not TKO'd, But KO'd?
Good post.
Lennox Lewis v. Rahman
Trinidad v. Hopkins (far as I'm concerned he got KO'd)
Spinks v. Tyson
Rocky v. Clubber Lang

Might need to brush up on your boxing terms there, Babablooey.
When you get KO'd, the ref counts to ten. Otherwise, it's a TKO.
I hope I was helpful.

Re: What Great Fighters Were KO'd? Not TKO'd, But KO'd?
Titofan, I like you. So dont get on my bad side being all technical.
I said Tito-Hopkins was a KO cuz Tito was on a knee at 9, and barely got up for 10, and was clearly still buzzed. Yes, it was a TKO, but I think youre smart enough to get what Im saying.
And thanks for your condolences for MR. NIGHTMARE. He's in a better place now.

Re: What Great Fighters Were KO'd? Not TKO'd, But KO'd?
I don't remember it that way, but what the hell. In any case, I think the thread was mostly aiming at devastating KO's, like the "one-punch, leave the guy twitching, call the medic, stop the count" kind of KO. When looked at in those terms, Hopkins' TKO over Tito would qualify even less.

Having said that, I'd like to add Donald Curry's loss to Mike McCallum to the list.

Re: What Great Fighters Were KO'd? Not TKO'd, But KO'd?
Pacquiao's first loss. He got hit by a body shot and was crumpled similar to Delahoya v. Hopkins.

Re: What Great Fighters Were KO'd? Not TKO'd, But KO'd?
The Ref could have counted to 10,000 over Joe Walcott.
-
Re: What Great Fighters Were KO'd? Not TKO'd, But KO'd?
Ruben Oliveras going out against Herrera was as messy as they come. Cervantes taking 10 from Pryor? Argue greatness but Terry Norris out vs Brown was something.
Sometimes the 'tko' can be more brutal in that a ref immedialy waves it off seeing no need to count. Where as some 'ko's can see a guy hitting ten as he struggles up. Duran v Hearns?...think he could have counted to twenty if not waved.

Re: What Great Fighters Were KO'd? Not TKO'd, But KO'd?
Funny that since this thread was made there had been none noteworthy until Pacquiao got wrecked last month. That really will be a historical KO, Manny is the only ATG other than Roy Jones to suffer a bad knockout in many years. I guess that speaks more to their having only been a few really "great" fighters active, but still. Manny isn't chinny and he'd never seen the canvas in 36 rounds against Marquez, it was a monster punch.

Donaire's Ko against Moniel comes to mind

Unless your name is Marlon Brando, you don't get to talk like this.
Slap yourself in the face, then continue.

Nice list, obviously with the frequently grueling fights old time fighters would endure it was more common they would simply get caught or come in to the ring ill prepared for that opponent etc. I don't know much about serveral of those guys, but for me the 3 most contemporary fighters you list fall a bit short. Hatton, Graham and Jackson were never quite great champions imo.

How can anybody forget the great Audley Harrison?
