Is Fernando Vargas a Hall of Famer?
IMO, giving fighters very tough fights and coming out on the losing end isn't enough to put you into the Hall of Fame. My question is what did Fernando Vargas ever do to warrant him being inducted? His biggest win was a UD against Ike Quartey, which was a good solid win, but by no means earth shattering. His fight against Winky Wright was one in which many people don't even think he won. He was destroyed by Trinidad, stopped by Oscar (after testing positive for steroids), recently lost to a Shane Mosley on the decline, and will likely lose again in the rematch. This along with the fact that he's only held a belt in one division. If you're gonna do that you would have to have a resume of wins like Hagler to be worthy of the Hall of Fame. If I were on the committee Vargas would not be getting in.

No chance IMO.

Re: Is Fernando Vargas a Hall of Famer?
Without the roids I always thought he was a really good fighter but physically, just average. There's nothing about Vargas that places him in a different category from other fighters, plus he lost to every major challenge he came up against (aside the Winky Wright decision which I think was wrong)
-
Re: Is Fernando Vargas a Hall of Famer?
He is only 28 but seems a shot fighter and I think he needs to beat some big names to be even considered, he fought and lost against the elite fighters that makes him a b class fighter , although he was exciting, I think if he would not have been rushed to the top and took on good solid fighters in some 12 round fights he would have done better against Trinidad and Oscar maybe not won but he would not be a shot fighter at 28 had he waited a couple years.

Re: Is Fernando Vargas a Hall of Famer?
I think he would still have a chance to make the Hall of Fame if he never would have injured his back in the car accident. He is only 28 years old, fighters that age still usually have a lot of gas left in them (Hopkins, Wright, De La Hoya, Mayweather, etc). PBF is pound 4 pound number 1 in the world right now and he will be turning 30 so 28 is not old but sadly Vargas is damaged goods and beyond his prime at a young age because of injury. His battle with Trinidad was epic and even no he took a great beating he got his licks in on Trinidad. He was not the same Vargas in the De La Hoya fight despite the steroids but he did display alot of heart and the fight was very close (I had him winning) before the KO. The Shane Mosley fight shoulden't count against his legacy, by then he was damaged and both fighters are washed up. Besides the fight was boring and both warriors where a shade of their former selves. Mosley did not dominate like Trinidad and De La Hoya did but due to the eye it was stopped, the second fight should be a toss up just like the first one. Vargas does not have the ring credentials to make the Hall of Fame but he will go down as a solid fighter out of this generation. He no longer fights for a legacy just for the paycheck, but if he can make millions for 2 boring post prime fights against Mosley he is a smart man.

Re: Is Fernando Vargas a Hall of Famer?
In my opinion, noooooooo way! I mean, the standards of what is a hall of famer inevitably dropped for this generation but even in that case,I just don't think he has done enough to justify it.

Re: Is Fernando Vargas a Hall of Famer?
nowhere near. he will be remembered as a man who lost his 3 biggest fights. harsh but true

Re: Is Fernando Vargas a Hall of Famer?
He won't be in the hall of fame but 3 or 4 of the guys he's fought will be.
-
Re: Is Fernando Vargas a Hall of Famer?
HHHmmm...Hall of Fame? I dunno but its not like we will all forget about him. He was no journey man / club fighter kind of guy.

Re: Is Fernando Vargas a Hall of Famer?
Nope.
He can't be a HOF'er if you falter every time you step up...& he has.
-
Re: Is Fernando Vargas a Hall of Famer?
You know how they say never say never, well i'm saying never. What the hell did he ever do to even be considered as a hall of famer, absolutely nothing, now if acting tough got u there then we'd have a different story, but fighting and beating great fighters is what gets u there, so vargas has no chance no how.
-
Re: Is Fernando Vargas a Hall of Famer?
Vargas has always been a good fighter. But never a great one. And not Hall of Fame material.

that may be true, but he never ducked anyone.
Vagras went after one huge challenge after another, the guy is a warrior
-
Re: Is Fernando Vargas a Hall of Famer?
He has one win, which would even put him on any sort of HOF level... The one over Quartey. Damn good win for a very young guy, the hype was massive after that..He maybe could have done alot more if he handed fought Trinidad right away, as he still showed alot of potential even in that fight he was looking to overtake Tito at one point.. but that fight took a hell of alot out of him, as the case with almost anyone who has lost to Tito... and DLH finished him off.. Definetly not HOf.

His one big win over Quartey was a close fight. And it came after Quartey had been idle for over a year. If not for the ring rust, I think Quartey beats him.

So what...neither did Gatti...& he don't deserve to be there either...but there's been talk of it...the HOF is lowering it's standards IWHO.

Re: Is Fernando Vargas a Hall of Famer?
if they are going to put people like vargas into the hall of fame they might as well put in the following
ronald mcdonald
buster douglas
zab judah
the wiggles
mr whippy
jesse brinkly
spice girls
gary coleman
-
Re: Is Fernando Vargas a Hall of Famer?
the answer is... NO.
The question is: What part of NO is not understood?
-
Re: Is Fernando Vargas a Hall of Famer?
His opposition was pretty good
Luis Ramon Campas
Raul Marquez
Winky Wright
Ike Quartey
Javier Castillejo
He might not be a HOF, but he wasn't far off

Gatti should get in for contributions to the sport imo. He should get in on the Boom Boom Mancini clause (even though Mancini was a more talented fighter and actually held a legit title)

Yeah I'm sure he lost the respect of a lot of voters with that.

I guess I'm just a bit too hard on Gatti...but he's just an overratted version of Vargas to me. Gatti, IWHO, is just a glorified club fighter.
Who has Gatti beaten of merit? Ward? An old Leija? Dorin?
All names followed by question marks. Gatti falls under the gun just like Vargas.

It's not a matter of who he's beat, it''s the fashion in which he did it imo. He brought a lot of people to the sport. I can definitely see why people would say he isn't one though, I just think that he is to memorable of a fighter to leave out of the hall. I don't think the same of Vargas.

I just think that it's a smudge on the other fighters out there.
Gatti never beat "the man" so to speak & I personally think that the way that he's lost speaks a lot more than the way that he's won.
He slugged it out & got bloody to win in his memorable wins...but he got hammered & beat to a bloody pulp in his memorable losses.
It's just how you look at it I guess.
I think that the new improved Gatti aint that great...& I know I'll catch some hate over that...but he just don't do jack for me.
He's fun to watch when he's winning...but he's horrible to watch when he's losing...because he really REALLY takes a beatdown.

He may very well have beaten Tito, had Tito not hit him square in the nuts after bein knocked down. Sneaky lil bastard. ;D

Re: Is Fernando Vargas a Hall of Famer?
Answer. No
Has not done enough.
-
Re: Is Fernando Vargas a Hall of Famer?
a place in the hall of fame is maybe to much, but he has given us some good wars, weather you like him or not you have to admit he turned some fights which would have been good anyway into big Grudge fights, which we all enjoyed watching him get beat
other fighters who are said to be hall of famers always have his name on the list of fighters they fought to get inducted
-
Re: Is Fernando Vargas a Hall of Famer?
Fernando isn't a hall of famer....if he had the same tenacity he had before ODH and Tito wrecked him then hell yeah, he'd dominate 154 right now if he was the same fighter but he's damaged goods
-
Re: Is Fernando Vargas a Hall of Famer?
I like Vargas but i think if the HOF puts that level of fighter in there, then it is no longer a large acheivement to get into the HOF. Only the elite should be in there, period.
