Far fetched Thought:Could Bruce Lee have been a Lightweight Champ??

The thought just crossed my mind he was 5'7 135 lbs If he had commited himselt to Western Boxing fully I believe he would have been a Lightweight champ and a Legend and heres why..

Speed: he had unbelievable hand speed,almost faster than the human eye

Accuracy:He was a deadly accurate striker

Power: His power was legendary,He learned how to utilize every bit of his 135lbs almost superhuman was his power and strength

Footwork:go's without saying and his ability to strike at every percieved angle with maximum power was amazing

Defense: Defense was a priority "Hit without Being hit" is what Bruce preached with Jeet Kune Do

Intelligence: Bruce was a student and a teacher of the fight game he was innovative in his thinking and methods

Bruce was a very physically gifted human being and all joking aside a perfect killing machine...
Again purely speculative Thread but having knwledge of Bruce and studying his Jeet Kune Do for a few years it's a fun thought..

Funny thing is Bruce would never have committed himself to one art,Jeet Kune Do provides a strong foundation by taking the useful attributes of all different arts and blending them all together so you are effecient and profecient at every range of combat..Boxing is the 1st range of Jeet Kune Do.

But boxing alone is considered an incomplete Martial Art system since it is limited..so he never would have committed exclusively though.But we can still speculate

First of all and most importantly, don't ever say PBF would shuffle like Judah, noone shufles that good!

Second I get annoyed by anyone who says they've studied Jeet Kune Do, as a matter of fact anyone who claims that probably never studied it at all, as it was a philophosy Bruce had. Take in all that applys to you and forget the rest, Jun Fan Gung Fu was the style he created - it's the first thing anyone who practices his style will tell you. The rest of this post is all speculation from someone who's seen Enter the Drag Queen one too many times. Would he of been a champ in boxing? Who knows, most great fighters mentioned have great physical gifts like Bruce so yeah it's possible, not something I'd care to sit around and speculate all day on. Lets be productive and talk about why Hopkins' is fighting Tarver and not Calzaghe! O0

he fought many world class kickboxing and martial arts world champs. because he was a gifted martial artist he would sure of beat any boxer in his weight in a street fight because he could use fists, legs, knees, elbows etc. although im not sure how he would of been in boxing.i think its true he may of had the fastest hands EVER. he had all the tools but it would just of been a matter of time before he learned the art of boxing(which i would think is much easier than kung fu). if he could do that......who knows. maybe the greatest ever, but we'll never know

First of all fighting like a boxer and fighting like a street fighter are two different things. He would lose against any top Mauy Thai or San SHou fighter around his wieght from China or Thailand in Kick boxing, and he would lose against any top super featherweight boxer. In martial arts at his time there weren't many hell even Chuck Norris got famous of being a good fighter back then. Most of the great fighters back then were in jail in China(or Trianing secretly) or in Thailand which Bruce Lee never went to. Bruce is overhyped he would be a challenge for alot of good fighters in a street fight maybe, but not in a ring. I am confident to say my master would have beaten him because he trained in China under his father who was reknown there and was sent jail during the Mao? reign, and fought other guys in jail, and he learnt everything his dad knew and he quicker at 50 than Bruce was in his prime.

Have you seen featherweight boxers(Pacquio) without their gloves on shadowboxing? Half of his movies Bruce used angles to make his punches look faster and he still looks slower than Pacquio or Mayweather do shadow boxing.

Bruce Lee would lose by DQ for accidently kicking to the head out of instinct.

I think this is pretty much an apples vs oranges deal. Bruce was great at his version of fighting but not sure it would translate well to boxing.

Then why in ultimate fighting do the strikers like chuck ladell usually beat the kung fu guys or whatever you call them?

I am not saying that the best boxers would always win against these guys because I would really like to see because some good boxers can not take a ground and pound.

you are so on this.....Bruce Lee was the most overhyped person on this earth....he was never good at actual fighting..which is why he never participated in world championships...he was about form..and asthetics...it was all about the look and camera angles....besides most martial artists suck a** and can't fight for sh*t anyway.(i'm talking about all those kids you see at every YMCA or Athletic club picking their a** and not paying attention..they know they are getting a belt because their parents are paying for it) types......just how qualified were those individuals Bruce Lee "sparred" with anyway?..

Show me a striker who doesn't use wrestling's sprawls, or at least Brazilian Jiu Jitsu on the ground to keep a good guard and get back to standing, and I'll show you a fighter who taps more than a tap dancer. ;D. Striking alone is almost futile against a competent grappler. I don't know much about Bruce Lee's style, but if it never included grappling, or at least defensive grappling, he wouldn't do so well in modern mixed martial arts. Chuck Liddel is known as one of the UFC's best strikers. He also happens to have one of the best sprawls which allows him to keep the fight on the feet and in his range.

Boxing... well that's a different story. And to the person who said boxing is easier than kung fu... I really don't think so. To be a very good boxer you need much more physical talent than you do in kung fu or other traditional martial arts. Learning how to throw each punch isn't so hard, mastering each punch and learning the mental aspect of boxing (the biggest part) is a looong and painful process.

I would bet that calzaghe or Hopkinss would wip the living poop out of any of them ultimate fighters anywhere anytime but I am not 100% sure of this because like i said there are some good fighters who can't do a thing once they are on the ground.

You stick to facts... You are labelling him as tremendous power, and super quick hands, but its based on what you've seen. How many knockouts does Bruce Lee have? WHo has he foughten? I am only discrediting Bruce Lee when people say his the best fighter to ever live and that he is a god of martial arts because he wasn't a god.

First Bruce Lee wasn't a great grapler and second he wasn't really a kung fu fighter... He created his own style of fighting that basically incoporated many styles, and took the best from each one... or what he thought was the best from each one. When he fought he fought similar to how my master does only he did so on a lower level.

I know alot about Bruce Lee don't discount my knowledge he used to be my "hero" if I ever had one. I realised though that he wasn't quite the best but a brilliant martial artist all the same. If he would have lived longer he would have found out alot more and could have become the best martial artist ever with his determination and drive, but he wasn't there yet. To put him in a boxing ring is just silly. People that boxers consentrate on their sport with as much dedication as Bruce Lee did his training just they did more sparring with better opponents, and didn't incoporate martial arts... Boxers work with their hands thats what they live through its their art, and almost nobody could beat a boxer at what they do p4p. That being said if Bruce Lee started boxing a young age he would be good.. maybe we don't know what his chin is like and just how hard he cracks with gloves on.

Not taking the word God literally...But who is?? in the last 40-50yrs who has been better??? The point of JKD was to be profecient in all ranges combat and to be able to survive in any circumstance...

Look around you man his style is condusive to MMA isint it they can fight close range medium range,grappling range to be a complete fighter who can thrive in any circumstance

In whoever said Bruce was all about forms is BULLSHITE!!!!! Bruce was all about handling biz not just meditating under a waterfull...He was a non conformist and hated the politics in the martial arts community at his time.He was always being chastised and Attaked Literally by his own countryman for teaching the arts to us americans!!!!! He was constantly evolving up into his death and his ways are still evolving and being carried out thru his original students and proteges.....

Best way to put it "he planted a seed many years ago and has grown into the way martial arts are viewed and taught and done!!!! I am not talking about the way they teach at the YMCA,or the gross marketing of posers and diluted McDojo's that exist today

Back years ago Before there were law suits if you thought someones style was inferior to yours you would send a student or even go yourself and challenge in a real fight...Trust, Bruce was a real fighter and defended his Ideas he was a marked man,funny as that sounds but it's true

Bruce had 6 professional (forget where the link is) 6 wins, 5 by knockout. Can't tell you if they were bums or world class fighters.... Taeth he probably did have tremendous power and lightning quick hands/feet, but just not to the extent people like to claim. Things people say about him kicking a 150 pound heavybag and making it touch the ceiling or having to slow the cameras down on account of him being too fast are most than likely bullshit. Although you'd have to be naive to think he wasn't an exceptional martial artist and specimen of a human being. Against another trained fighter in THAT era he was probably very effective, things have evolved though. We have those same type of specimens today, they're just in another form and we get to see them in real situations. In boxing we've had someone like that, ever hear of Roy Jones? MMA has a guy like that, Fedor Emelianko is someone I'd call untouchable - 23 wins, 1 loss because of a cut (no loss at all). In mma do you have any Idea what kind of record that is? Fighting the best fighters on the planet and never tasting defeat - as good as he is though, he can be knocked out as it almost happend before. What did he do? He held on, gained his composure and retaliated. So to think Bruce Lee was untouchable is silly, he could be knocked out, and would probably be knocked out by bigger men like the Wanderlei Silva and Chuck Liddell's of the world. Who knows what kind of boxer he would of been. Definately an exceptional one, being exceptional doesn't keep you at #1, look how physically gifted Bernard Hopkins wasn't - he was on top of the world at one point :). You never know who mentally has it for this game, for all we know Wacko's mind is better equipped for boxing than Floyd Mayweather's.

you are so on this.....Bruce Lee was the most overhyped person on this earth....he was never good at actual fighting..which is why he never participated in world championships...he was about form..and asthetics...it was all about the look and camera angles....besides most martial artists suck a** and can't fight for sh*t anyway.(i'm talking about all those kids you see at every YMCA or Athletic club picking their a** and not paying attention..they know they are getting a belt because their parents are paying for it) types......just how qualified were those individuals Bruce Lee "sparred" with anyway?..

I know alot about Bruce Lee don't discount my knowledge he used to be my "hero" if I ever had one. I realised though that he wasn't quite the best but a brilliant martial artist all the same. If he would have lived longer he would have found out alot more and could have become the best martial artist ever with his determination and drive, but he wasn't there yet. To put him in a boxing ring is just silly. People that boxers consentrate on their sport with as much dedication as Bruce Lee did his training just they did more sparring with better opponents, and didn't incoporate martial arts... Boxers work with their hands thats what they live through its their art, and almost nobody could beat a boxer at what they do p4p. That being said if Bruce Lee started boxing a young age he would be good.. maybe we don't know what his chin is like and just how hard he cracks with gloves on.

Can you explain what you mean by this, I've heard this often but couldn't figure out what people meant.

He never relied on his physical gifts like his rival Roy Jones. Everything he did was methodical, tricky, deceptive, always playing with your mind instead of coming in with flashy combinations and wild haymakers. Don't get me wrong he wasn't completely lacking in the athletic department, it just wasn't his style.

I'm a blackbelt in Kung Fu...trust me when I say this..I know and have seen many 1st and even 2nd degree black belts that would be even more worthless in a street fight or in a boxing ring than t*ts on a bull...I was a state champion in boxing and I can speak from experience...boxing is WAY harder to master than Kung Fu....

So to think Bruce Lee was untouchable is silly, he could be knocked out, and would probably be knocked out by bigger men like the Wanderlei Silva and Chuck Liddell's of the world. Who knows what kind of boxer he would of been. Definately an exceptional one, being exceptional doesn't keep you at #1, look how physically gifted Bernard Hopkins wasn't - he was on top of the world at one point :). You never know who mentally has it for this game, for all we know Wacko's mind is better equipped for boxing than Floyd Mayweather's.

Again purely speculative Thread but having knwledge of Bruce and studying his Jeet Kune Do for a few years it's a fun thought..

Funny thing is Bruce would never have committed himself to one art,Jeet Kune Do provides a strong foundation by taking the useful attributes of all different arts and blending them all together so you are effecient and profecient at every range of combat..Boxing is the 1st range of Jeet Kune Do.

But boxing alone is considered an incomplete Martial Art system since it is limited..so he never would have committed exclusively though.But we can still speculate

Segal is a trained killer though (as goofy as he looks!), he worked for the CIA but then again he didn't ;)

He too is a specimen, I remember at this Aikido seminar I attended they were talking about why all the things you see him do in films is possible. He's very tall and has an arm spam of a man thats nearly 7 foot tall, just riducously long arms that hang down to his knees, which allows him to be very effective with Aikido, Wing Chun and all that jazz. Everyones different, and certain martial arts are going to compliment you personally better than others.

Who knows maybe Bruce Lee may of been a piss poor boxer :)
