i quite agree they both deserve props for their time in the ring. discrediting one will most likely result in discrediting the other. however if they would have fought in their primes I would have picked louis over marciano.

After what Louis did to that German fighter during WWll, it was almost impossible to hate him.

Good point.

I have seen a lot of Rocky bashing on this forum and it has always perplexed me. I think that a lot of it is just plain ignorance.

Some people just don't understand the human body. Rocky was a very small heavy and yet he managed to devestate sooo many boxers and basically go undefeated. Thats impressive no matter how you cut it.

It always seems like if someone does't like a fighter they will always say that "the competition in his era was weak"

Bottom line is, if you are a good champion, you are bound to make the rest of the division look weak because you are beating the shit out of all of them.

Yer alot of people dislike rocky for the opposition he faught, thats fooking pathetic, hating someone for beating everyone in his day.

alot of fighters have this problem with their legacies. It is simply rare to have 3-5 great hw's around at the same time. I think Joe had a slightly better resume but there is no arguing that its fluffed up with alot of bums. Its hard to fault any fighter for retiring at 49-0 and staying that way, but Rock could have helped his legacy quite a bit by fighting Liston and Patterson when he still would have been in his mid 30's. I put Joe in my top three and Rock in my top ten all time HW's

The '72 Dolphins are the only undefeated team in NFL history. The '85 Bears are the greatest team in NFL history. You wanna know why? Because the Dolphins were just a bunch of mediocre over-achievers who played during a lackluster talented era. Same principle here. Accept it and move on.

They were mostly all small heavyweights back then. Rocky wasn't that small compared to the weights of other fighters during that era. Most were below 200 lbs.

Because Joe Louis dominated a weak Heavyweight division but he fought the best in that era. And Marciano got through an even weaker era where he didn't even fight all the best of that weaker era ;)

Bullshit Once again, the guy was an undersized heavy and still went out there and beat the shit out of everyone. Undefeated in boxing is a little different than football.

Marciano had a great temperament, power, chin and workrate but I can't imagine him dealing with a prime Lous who had the power to keep him off and vastly superior boxing skills. Louis dropped him as a shot fighter. A prime Ali would have jabbed his ears off for 15 rounds with Rocky swinging at air

He can say however that he beat Joe Louis.

Again, what Marciano did with his size was awesome. He was an exciting heavyweight and he is undefeated. You can't take that away from him, and why would anyone want to. If it is true that styles make fights, (as we are all so fond of saying) then his level of competition is relative.

Besides, Who else went out undefeated?

If you put anyone in Rocky's era of today's heavyweights a lot of them would be unbeaten.

louis can only say he beat a 169 pound billy conn when he was at his best. evey1 else louis was washed up or a bum. OLD MAN braddock was the best the division had 2 offer at louis's era---so rocky was just like his idol--they both fought in weak era's---louis era was alittle better providing there was more washed up champs in his ;D

You don't know anything about football to make a statement like the 72 Dolphins were a bunch of mediocore over-achievers, Bob Griese, Larry Cszonka, Larry Little, Paul Warfield, Jake Scott are all Hall of Famers, so you need to read up on football junior, stay on the porch if you can't run with the big dogs. And as far as Marciano is concerned, real true boxing fans know how great he was,.. and his place in boxing history. Let me say this about Joe Louis, who IMO is the greatest Heavyweight of all-time, no fighter from featherweight to heavyweight fought for such a long period of time at his high level of excellence, he was Heavyweight Champion of the World, when it really meant something, for almost 12 yrs.

Most people think the era that they were introduced to a sport was the best period, it figures its what they can relate to better, they were young and impresionable. Thats the time they will defend through ego of youth. After years they could change their perspective most people within reason will. the folks who defend the modern day fighters ,started I think recently watching boxing. So it goes on ,Im lucky being 146 years old.
