Apparently it's on!!! Can the Gentleman slay the Dragon?

Re: Apparently it's on!!! Can the Gentleman slay the Dragon?
I voted Calzaghe by decision because (of late) I've been really impressed by Johnson's determination & output & I think that he'll gut it out heart & soul to the finish...I just don't think that it'd be enough.
-
Re: Apparently it's on!!! Can the Gentleman slay the Dragon?
This is sad for me. I can't pick against Calzaghe...and I predict that he is about to take out another one of my favorite fighters. I just think that Calzaghe, is to fast and to sharp for Johnson right now. Johnson is a straight ahead fighter and Calzaghe fairs well against straight ahead fighters. Maybe Johnson can win though. Maybe the 7 lb jump will affect Calzaghe (like it did his English counterpart, Hatton) and I think Johnson will do better against Calzaghe since Johnson has been in a big fight against a huge name 4 or 5 times before as opposed to Lacy being in his first big fight when he fought Calzaghe.
I'm rootin for Johnson, I just don't think he has the tools at this point of his career to get the job done.
-
Re: Apparently it's on!!! Can the Gentleman slay the Dragon?
And no way in hell Calzaghe jumps 7 pounds and knocks out iron chinned Johnson. No way. I would take that to the bank.
-
Re: Apparently it's on!!! Can the Gentleman slay the Dragon?
Is this fight at 168 or 175? boxrec is showing the WBO and IBF SMW belts on the line. IF that is right Calzaghe by UD. If it is at 175 still Calzaghe but by a closer margin. Either weight Joe outboxes Johnson.

Agreed. Joe's gonna be waaaaaaay to fast for Glen. Way too fast. I personally see this as a stepping stone to Jones jr or Tarver...provided that both of those two win their next fights.
Imagine if Jones make some impressive comeback by KOing Prince Baldi & then taking on Calzaghe & defeating him...I would never wish that to happen...but stranger things have come to pass. ;D

Again...agreed.
I wouldn't say that Johnson is past it...because he has proven time & time again...that he's gotten old...but Calzaghe is a much better fighter defensively & tactically.

The last that I read it was at a catch weight.
That's a good question TB.
One that I can't answer right now...I was hoping that it was at 175.

Re: Apparently it's on!!! Can the Gentleman slay the Dragon?
I think Jones hits harder and has faster hands then Calzaghe

Isn't that ironic... That Glen Johnson is a stepping stone to those men... At least Jones Jr... He Koed him and won every round on the way to it... This should be seen as a tough challenge for Calzaghe and Im glad he's taking it.. I think this is the hardest opponent out there that Calzaghe will face, because Hopkins is retiring after he beats Tarver and noone will want to see him against Calzaghe then. ;)

so you're telling me Calzaghe is faster and hits harder then Jones hit Johnson in their fight? ;)

I voted calzaghe and i think he will win assuming that his hand does not give out

Yes. Calzaghe will be faster than Jones was against Glen Johnson...hands down.
Now...if your'e trying to be crafty & get me...like I know you are...then NO...Calzaghe will not be as fast as Jones was against the other two Johnsons that he beat...now...go try & milk somebody else SSSP. :-*

Re: Apparently it's on!!! Can the Gentleman slay the Dragon?
Calzaghe peaked with the Lacy win. No where else to go but down. And down he will in the Johnson fight. Calzaghe hit Lacy at will and couldn't drop him until the end. When Lacy was dead tired. His punches will have no affect on the heavier, rock jawed Johnson.

Totally disagree.
Everyone forgets that Calzaghe's got a boatload of knocked out gents on his record & Lacy's got a hell of a beard also.
His punches will have an effect babe.

One thing not to forget is Calzaghes hands though...THey can always be a problem, it's a small intangible with him. if he hurts it at all before or during the fight then he will be in really tough against Glen, and that will definetly have an effect.
-
Re: Apparently it's on!!! Can the Gentleman slay the Dragon?
violent demise i don't know how you know that Calzaghe has peaked yet. How come he can't carry on getting better. I think Calzaghe is an awesome fighter but it is impossible to say he has peaked unless it is said retrospectively (as in years retrospectively),...unless yiu truly believe that JC is the epitome of boxing prowess

The guys 33 years old, he is what he is. He won't improve anymore. The Lacy win was the peak win of his career. His downfall begins.

Now what timezone you live in that you have this historical perspective and know that March 4 2006 was the top of the hill for Joe and he started sliding down from that zenith right away? How you know it isn't a plateau that leaves him at a high altitude for a year or two or three? You been time travelling? what if he pulls a Hopkins?
Or do you know something we don't?
Me, I'm stuck travelling at the speed of time (tick-tock) ... so I appreciate your perspective. Hey ... you ever run into Dr Who?

What other big name you think he can beat? Tarver? Johnson? Who?

Re: Apparently it's on!!! Can the Gentleman slay the Dragon?

I don't know - we'll find out. I like Joe fine but I wasn't bragging on him or anything. Maybe he won't beat anyone again, and then your words will prove to be true.
It's just that he beat Lacy only a little less than three months ago. To say that that was the peak of his career seems premature. (If he does beat folks like Tarver or Johnson I doubt very much that it will be the beat-down that he put on Lacy. I suppose that could be used as evidence of a decline - although it may only be that he's facing tougher opposition.)
And he's 34 now, not 33. Not only has he begun the inevitable decline from his best moment in boxing, he has also aged, in less than three months.
tick-tock ...

Sorry gotta disagree with you there 3rd fight against Tarver Jones still has faster hands than Calzaghe, and does hit harder its just he doesn't have any steam, or determination, and more important a chin/reflexes to get him by.

Thought you was a Jones fan, why wouldnt you want Roy to defeat Joe and go out with a bang? ???
Also I think this is going to be a tough, tough fight for Calzaghe. I will be surprised and impressed if he can beat Glen Johnson.
-
Re: Apparently it's on!!! Can the Gentleman slay the Dragon?
Calzaghe by UD, he won't knock him out. Only worry if that Calzaghe believes the hype, when he beat Lacy he was in the perfect frame of mind, he was being knocked by everyone as a dodger and had something to prove big time. He was also very aware that Lacy was dangerous, so he had a bit of that fear factor keeping him focused and on his toes.
If he is fighting Johnson I'd be very impressed, after all the speculation that he'd fight a 'tune up' he's arguably facing one of the biggest challenges out there, certainly a bigger challenge than Beyer and as tough if not tougher than Kessler.
Let's just hope also that JC makes the weight properly, not just by doing less conditioning.
-
Re: Apparently it's on!!! Can the Gentleman slay the Dragon?
If Joe doesn't get up for this he's in for a LOOOOONG night.
Glen is a tough guy, he can take punches and his work rate is incredible...TOUGH TOUGH fight

Well if it is Johnson it was worth the wait
Surely its not at 168 though ???

Agreed. He should just go ahead & take the plunge into the pool, IWO.

Re: Apparently it's on!!! Can the Gentleman slay the Dragon?
Joe is at his best when blokes go straight at him which is just the way GJ fights.
It will be a closer fight than his fight with Lacy but Joe will win by 3 or 4 points.

I think Johnson will be much stronger than Lacy at close quaters and Joe wont be able to do what he wants in close, but i think if he uses his head and boxes he will win a comfortable UD.

agreed.
joes speed will be the telling factor in this one. sharp combos and then moving to either side and firing off the same....
should be an exciting fight...
after all that waiting we've got ourselves a peach of a fight ;D
-
Re: Apparently it's on!!! Can the Gentleman slay the Dragon?
I honestly think that Joe will dazzle him with his speed and throw so many punches from all angles that
he'll think he's surrounded.
He'll toy with him mercilessly imo and win by late stoppage.
Calzaghe has all the tools to do this 8)

You going Smash?? Im trying to get the lads to go, but they are not all die hards, and dont no who Johnson is, but with the Williams-Skelton fight aswell and Kahn its got to be worth the effort of getting down to Cardiff.

They have been searching for guys at 168 theres no way at this short notice the fight will now be at 175, FW doesn't take chances like that, plus Johnson has no belt ;)
