Top Ten Greatest Heavyweights of all Time!
1. Evander Holyfield
2. Andrew Golota
3. Joe Louis
4. Rocky Marciano
5. Muhammad Ali
6. Jack Johnson
7. Sonny Liston
8. Ike Ibeabuchi
9.Tommy Morrison
10. Larry Holmes
What does everybody else think?? I'm sure this is a debateable thread. You can argue about a few names on my list. But most of them go without saying!
-
Re: Top Ten Greatest Heavyweights of all Time!
Golota ahead of Ali, this must be a joke. And if it is, it's not funny.

Are you off your rocker son.....
Tommy as much as i liked him is no top 10 material,
Same with Ike,
Golata is nowhere near the top,
Holyfield is one of my faves ever but he simply isnt the best Heavy of all time.

How wrong you are! Golota had a jab that went unmatched by any of the heavyweight greats! Look what he did to Riddick Bowe and the answer is clear. Andrew Golota would of walked right through most of boxing's greatest heavyweights. And Tommy Morrison had a left hook that went unmatched by any other heavyweight great. Like I said this is a debatable thread and I welcome all opinions. Just don't insult me and put me down like benjamindallas554 does on other boards.

Your post are an insult to everybody's intelligence, and we are all a little bit dumber after reading them. Tommy Morrison, Ike Ibeabuchi, and Golota proves that you have very limited boxing knowledge and you should not be on this site. You are probably no older than 15 years old, and if you are you are in your second childhood.

Re: Top Ten Greatest Heavyweights of all Time!
Great fighters stand out, from the turn of the century we have had Johnson, Dempsey, Louis, Marciano, Patterson, Liston, Ali, Frazier, Foreman, Holmes, Tyson, Holyfield, Bowe and as much as I hate to say it Lewis.
Those are the obvious tops but what order they go in can be interprated anyway.
Frazier and Foreman are there more because of Ali than their own merits, Frazier more so, Foreman had a relatively successfull comeback and became the oldest ever champ.

Thats not the reason I was referring to!!
Its about career's and not 1 fight.
Oliver McCall beat a near prime Lennox Lewis for example. When you rank greatness (at least imo) its not necessarily who beat or could beat another fighter on any given night - it's about Longjevity, career success, victims and many other factors.
Max Baer had a better career then Jimmy Braddock

Louis was a true legend, his influence goes beyond boxing, and on top of all that, he was virtually unbeatable for 10 years (1937-47), no other Heavyweight can hand on heart say that.
Holyfield may of lost the Bowe series 2/1, but his overall career was far better than Bowe. He met virtually everyone that mattered in the 90s, and the only person he did not beat was Lewis, and he was arguable 9 years past his best by then.
-
Re: Top Ten Greatest Heavyweights of all Time!
Misquoting me you sum bich! :boxing2:
But in terms of if they fought each other, do you think Louis could compete with guys like Ali, Foreman, Frazier, Tyson?
-
Re: Top Ten Greatest Heavyweights of all Time!
It sounds odd but I think Louis would have more success with the best of the bunch, Ali.
Ali struggled with a simple jab, the other fighters would overpower him

I see where you are comming from, but The thread is for the Greatest, not the best.
The Best, IMO goes:
5: The Tyson who beat Biggs
4: The Douglas who beat Tyson
3: The Holyfield who beat Bowe in fight two
2: The Lewis who beat Tua
1: The Bowe who beat Holyfield in fight one

Of all of the heavies in the past 100+ years, i can't believe that you guys are putting LLewis in the top 10
Is it a British thing or what? If so, I guess that I could understand but otherwise...... :banghead:

I personally wouldn't put Lewis in there and I'm British but........................................
Think about what he achieved, how long he dominated & how he avenged his only 2 defeats and then try and think of 10 Heavyweights in history that have a better resume. Also try and find 10 that would have beaten him on his very best night!!
The division has been tradionally weak with almost every era having just 1 dominant figure, there must be atleast 20 fighters with a very real claim to be top 10 all time
Is it really that inconcievable that people would have Lennox Lewis there?
-
Re: Top Ten Greatest Heavyweights of all Time!
Lewis has got more right to be in a top 10 list than Holyfeild in my opinion. He was ducked by him and beat him. He lost two fights by KO, but a fading Bowe stopped holyfeild as well. Evander's reputation was based on his heart, his defeat of an aging Tyson and the 3 fights with Bowe (who ducked Lewis). He was a great cruiser, and a very good small hevyweight with a great chin, ordinary 1-shot power but good combination punching skills. He was beaten or taken to the brink by a lot of faded or ordinary fighters in his prime. (Cooper, Dokes, Foreman, Holmes, Moorer etc.)
I'm not English, but I think the lack of respect given to Lewis is due to his not being American and his somewhat cautious style.
-

A good point....I can agree with that.

My issue with him is that the man got credit for having great timing....In other words he beat a Tsyon who in every sense of the word wasn't even close to the same person.
His tidious victories over an old Holyfield (still not convinced about the second fight) who had struggled with Vaughn Bean in the previous match and had pretty much seen his last convincing fight 3 years before with Tyson, were very unimpresssive to me as well.
I give him lots of credit though for the nature in which he beat Ruddock, Golota, and Grant, and the fact that he had the guts to step into the ring with the guys who KOed him
