Who's the most overated fighter of all time
I am going to give Oscar De La Hoya a break today. Sure he had plenty of suspect victories but he lost a couple of suspect one's also (Mosley 2). But I have to give my nod to Riddick Bowe, specially after I just read the thread on how he could beat a prime Tyson (NOT). I guess his impressive victories over Holyfield made his career, but after Golata ripped him up I knew he was overated.

Re: Who's the most overated fighter of all time
Jeff "left hook" Lacy
Hector Camancho
Vernon Forrest
Antonio Tarver
Virgil Hill
Micheal Moore
are all honorable mentions

How could I forget Nasseem "Prince" Hamed.

That big guy in the gold mask in Gladiator. Somebody 'the Gaul' I think.

Or what about the big Russian from Rocky 4, or maybe even the Kirate Kid

Re: Who's the most overated fighter of all time
yeah, the Karate Kid - I hated that skinny little fucker and always wanted to stab him in the face.
He was definitely overrated.
Also the guy with the knives instead of a hand in 'Enter the Dragon' (Mr Han) - he had this big build up and beat up the black guy and everything .. then he turned into a wimp against Lee.
Plus, as all these were documentaries and therefore true, does anyone know how I can contact Agent Smith on the internet?

15 strait is very impressive, but going into the Barrera fight he had so much star power, almost as much as Oscar (but not quite). He loses the fight horribly and does not redeem himself at all, not just against Barrera but any of the top fighters in his weight class, he falls off of the map. I was a big Naz fan and I remember many of the fights during that 15 defenses, he was so fast he would keep his hands down by his waist when fighting (he was that good). And then stiff competition came and he collapsed. With all the hype surrounding him with the HBO contract, endorsements, ESPN highlights, antics in the ring he did not live up. By the way I agree with the Harrison quote

[/quote]cool...I see where you're coming from but NAZ won a title again before he retired...and wins against Kevin Kelly(who's still fighting good fights) and Wayne McCullogg were against stiff competition...

Re: Who's the most overated fighter of all time
From a Sanctioning Body stand point I would say
John Ruiz comes to mind. how in the hell he could be hanging around the #1 spot after losing to Jones. and Toney, and have the opportunities to keep fighting for the Championship is beyond me . I thought Golota was robbed in that boring fight with Ruiz. John had a lot of questionable decisions fall his way . In the rankings Ruiz should have been cold soup. Limited boxing Skills. punch and grab technique was hard to watch from a fight fan stand point. If Don King didn’t have him in the pocket he would have been way down in the charts in my opinion .

True statement but I dont think any boxing fan overhyped him. He was a pathetic excuse for a champion.

The worst of all time, in my opinion.

Re: Who's the most overated fighter of all time
The way of boxing is you win the title in the ring, and the only place you can lose it is in the ring. Ruiz all you need is a lawyer to get a title. And for Lennox Lewis all you need is a lawyer and a court to get a title shot ;D

Re: Who's the most overated fighter of all time
EVANDER HOLYFIELD
LENNOX LEWIS

I disagree with Holyfield. Evander was 100% thrill ride no matter who he fought. He made his opponents get into real fighting condition because they knew they need to be at their best in order to beat Evander. not like today’s Heavyweights that have no desire and seem to have signed a contract that says lets not get in shape for the fight 250-260lbs absolute ridiculous weights now days , None effective weight I might add.
I also disagree with Lewis, However I find Lennox an interesting addition although Lewis avenged his dismantles, he was not really consistent through his career. kind of bored me to watch a lot of the time. He seemed to have an attitude of just do enough to win, without taking any real chances. then in some fights he brought his A game . I liked Lewis before he put on all that weight. When he was 227 lbs against Ruddock .
.

This is a joke right, he is a 6 weight champion, what is wrong with you, seriously?

Re: Who's the most overated fighter of all time
How can anyone who has been a World Champion be "Over-Rated".
You go into a sport aiming to be the best a "World Champion" if you succeed you are not "Over-Rated"...
Seriously some of you guys ask so much from these men, It makes me wonder if you actua.lly think they should die in the ring just to please you?
-
Re: Who's the most overated fighter of all time
John Ruiz ia a bum.
Although that might be unkind to bums.

I can see that debating with you is going to be difficult because we have to break it down in elementary terms for you. Let me give you a basketball analogy.
Many people believe that Micheal Jordan is the greatest basketball player of all time. When he retired the first time Scottie Pippen (His sidekick) tookover the main role as team leader. People put him on the same level with Micheal Jordan thinking he would duplicate the same success, he didn't. So people screamed that he was over rated. Does not mean that he was a bum, it does not mean he was not successful (Great Player) it means that people expected more out of him than he produced. That is what overated is. Champions can be overated, it does not mean that they are not successful.

he lost to bowe twice and moore once...IN HIS PRIME
he wasnt even the best heavyweight when he was in his prime, and just because he continued to fight and get beat by nobodies is a moot point because if that were true then he had a very short "prime" period.
again, starr................not saying he wasnt a good and entertaining fighter, but he was VERY far from being considered an all time great

evander did however beat riddick and in the third fight he was suffering from hepatitis...so..for evander not to be a natural HW he was damn good..and just had problems with larger guys...bowe,lewis..(although i think prime evander kicks lennox's ass) he was the second HW to win the HW weight crown three times..the first to win it 4 times..so there's no way in hell that evander is overrated...In fact Evander need to have a HW training camp so he teach these pucci heavyweights now how not to be scared of getting into a fight...
but IMO most overrated
Vargas, ODH, TYSON
