one of the worst, most crooked nights of boxing ever
richard steele KNEW the fight was almost over and if he cant tell when a round is almost over or hear the 10 second notification when it goes off then he has no buisness being a ref
1 important question..................................was don king promoting chavez at the time of that fight?
because that would explain a whole lot if thats the case
biggest robbery of all time imo
that night was a black eye on the sport

Re: Who Thinks Meldrick Taylor Was Screwed
When you look at thge accumulative damage of Meldrick if time wasn't a factor that fight would have been stopped I think the whole controversy is that it was fight with 5 seconds left.
Ask yourself if there was a minute left in that round would you have stopped it?

Thats exactly what the controversery is!!!!I cant tell you if I would have stopped it with a minute left....If Chavez engaged him and he couldnt defend himself and wasnt punching back than yes Starr his life is woth more...5 seconds left if anybody in the enire history of the human race deserved the benefit of the doubt it was Meldrick Taylor. He was a proud Philly fighter that won the war of attricition over the legendary Chavez, He payed the ultimate price in that fight he was never the same and his Medal Of Honor should have been his hard fought victory...

Re: Who Thinks Meldrick Taylor Was Screwed
Taylor got screwed alright, by Lou Duva, who told him he needed to go out and win the last round :'(
-
Re: Who Thinks Meldrick Taylor Was Screwed
Time should be disregarded unless the fight was over completely. Taylor was unfit to continue, he was clearly out of it. When a referee looks into a fighter's eyes and sees a guy who doesn't know where he is, it's the referee's responsibility to protect that fighter from his own ighting spirt. Taylor was out of it, I don't think anyone can argue that he wasn't. The rules don't take time into account. They do take fighter safety into account, and very bad things have happened in 10 seconds. I have absolutely no problem with the stoppage. Richard Steele has been in the ring a hell of a lot longer then anyone here and when he looks into a fighter's eyes, he knows if they are there are not. I won't second guess him, because if I was second guessing him, it would be because he let a concussed fighter who was clearly out of it go in for more against one of the hardest punchers in the sport.

fighting so hard he EARNED the right to stand and take those last 3 seconds of punishment
it was a ridiculas stoppage i think Steele had money on the fight ....(reichard is a great ref if it wasnt for that fight)

Re: Who Thinks Meldrick Taylor Was Screwed
Ok, I wans't around when this fight happened (I was a little kid) and when I watched this fight for the first time i knew nuthin about either guy and I thought that meldrick was done and dusted, and the fight was stopped correctly, f*ck the time, and f*ck anyone who thinks it was the worng decision, julio still had time to inflict irreversible punishment, considering how punch drunk meldrick is today, richard steele made one of the bravest and compassionate calls ever by a referee.
If steele had money on the fight he'd have stopped it when JCC was introuble earlier in the fight, I don't wanna hear that crap.
-
Re: Who Thinks Meldrick Taylor Was Screwed
It was one of those what if situations. Say the ref let it go on, JCC was right behind him ready to pounce on Taylor. He had enough time to get one last shot in that could of done permanent damage. IMO its a fine line, refs cant pay to much attention to how much time is left in a situation like that. I dont think Taylor got screwed as much as JCC got EXTREMELY lucky.
:coolclick: yoitsdan I agree with you 100%.

Well, had the fight gone on he might have had something to show for being beaten retarded.

Re: Who Thinks Meldrick Taylor Was Screwed
I loved Meldrick in the ring. It broke my heart when he lost that match. All that being said I hate that Steele stopped the fight and I hate Duva for telling Meldrick he needed the round and for yelling at him from the ropes when steele was counting but I can't falt Steele for stopping it. By the rules it was the correct action, but it wasn't right. Meldrick deserved to be the first man to beat JCC.

Thats a terrible statement means....
He fought so hard he deserved to (take another 3 shots that could have possibly ruined him for life, or even worse)
Time is of no key when a fighters life is on the line, 99% he probably would of been ok, but in the refs mind theres 1% chance he wont be, he had no choice, Chavez could have fired 3 major shots in that time, and what could of happened, is not bear thinking about, because if he didnt we could all be sitting here today saying, should the ref have stopped the fight.....and that would have been far worse......

Re: Who Thinks Meldrick Taylor Was Screwed
If that stoppage had happened a minute earlier I don't think people would complain because he was badlt beaten up and didn't answer the referee, he just stood there eyes glazed over. As it happened with 2 seconds left to go it was terribly un lucky and very dodgy looking, but the guy didn't answer and the ref is supposed to stop a match if the guy can't carry on after getting knocked down. Steele could have dragged it on for a few more seconds so that the bell rang and saved him, but then he really would have been fixing the fight. It's just one of those things, it happens in all sports, unfair penatlies, hand balls letting Argentina knock us out of the world cup, that's life.

Re: Who Thinks Meldrick Taylor Was Screwed
Here is the fight you decide Meldrick got up in plenty of time looked down to the ground looked at Steele..Correct me if I am wrong but wasnt one of his trainers(I think it was Duva)was shouting from his corner to get his attention so he looked away for a sec and Steele waves off the fight Bullshit....The camera was close to him he looked fit to continue especially for a few seconds..
That was the most controversial stoppage ever in our modern era...There was plenty of fights before that one and have been more since then that have been allowed to continue with fighters that have looked a lot worse with more time than what was left  with a few seconds in the last round....Watch the fight again and tell me he was up at 4 and didnt look half as loopy as most that I have seen..

Re: Who Thinks Meldrick Taylor Was Screwed
lol, whoever thinks Chavez would of knocked out Meldrick in 2 seconds when he was all away across the ring is being not realistic...
Taylor was not dazed, he was still seeing clearly and could of easily survived by by standing up...He was robbed. Steele did a terrible job on that fight, because Taylor would of won a UD if it was any other refferee.

Re: Who Thinks Meldrick Taylor Was Screwed
This is a subject that annoys the fuck out of me!!!
A fight is 12 rounds long and 180 seconds in each round, if you can win in the first 2 seconds you can win in the last 2 seconds time is IRRELEVANT. It would be a complete disservice to JCC if the refereee had've let the fight go on due to the fact that it was almost finished, the referee is not a timekeeper and should have no concern with the time at all. Nobody is disputing that Taylor was unfit to continue which he undoubtedly was, people are only concerned with the time and think Steele should've done him a favour. No way!!! He was knocked down with about 13-14 seconds left and when he got up he was unable to responnd to the referees questions, therefore he has lost fair and square. P.S If if it mattered, which it doesn't nobody could here the 10 second clap, because of the crowd noise - watch it and see.
All of what I have said doesn't even bring into question the safety side of things, and I am pretty sure that JCC would've had chance to land one more career ending blow!! Even if he only had a very slight chance of landing another punch it was still too risky to let him continue
All of the people that have said the ref should've given Taylor the chance even though he was out on his feet are basically saying you think the ref should have helped him and cheated because he had knowledge of the time, if you think that then what's the point of the last 10 seconds of a fight if the guy losing doesn't still have a chance to win??
I wanted Taylor to win that fight so much and I dislike Richard Steele immensely, but that decison was 100% just and fair and correct!!

Whether or not he would've knocked him out in 2 seconds is totally irrelevant,it's not the point!!! Time has no factor in a boxing match, you can win at any stage from the firts second until that last bell goes , thats the whole point of it!! You are asking the referee do help a fighter based on the time. 178 seconds is just 3 shapes, as is 180 seconds how close there are to each other has no relevance!! And Meldrick was not fit to continue, and even if he was the rules state that you have to respond when questioned and he didn't answer Steele.

Thats how i see it as well, nice post. :coolclick:

Re: Who Thinks Meldrick Taylor Was Screwed
IMO he wasn't out on his feet because he never even wobbled
He got up on the count of 6, and was just tired but seeing clearly at the same time.
Had Taylor not looked at his corner when Steele asked if he was ok, the fight would of gone on and Meldrick would of won..
The rest is history

it's amazing just how blind Taylor fans become when it comes to this....When Richard Steele walked over to Taylor after the Knockdown you will notice Taylor's hand still holding onto the rope and he was still out on his feat and unresponsive....You can only be saved by the bell in 12th and final round...not with time left.....it was a good stoppage....

I disagree he showed no signs of not being able to continue ,he didnt stumble to get up...He was obviously able to here is corner yelling at him from across the ring with thousands of people yelling screaming and clapping...SO COHERRENTNESS was not an issue it was a poor stoppage

Him holding the rope should not have been a factor...When Frazier knocked down Ali he was leaning in the corner with both arms draped on the ropes

Well I think everyone’s initial response to that stoppage was outrage, but then as you watch it again and take everything into consideration you realize that Steele was doing what he thought was right at the Time. Taylor was in real troubles. I remember someone in an earlier post talking about Duva ‘s role in this situation,, and I tended to agree with that assessment also .

The Ref is right there and can see things that the viewers at home don't see. The eyes for one. The eyes don't lie. You can look right into a fighters eyes and know where he is at.

then i saw it again and was even more pissed
taylor could have gone on, and YES, IT IS a referees responsibility to know approximately how much time is left before he calls the fight (the difference between 3 minutes and 5 seconds shouldnt be too hard to figure out)

I will have to agree to disagree with you guys.I am at the end of the debate.IN MY OPINION it was one of the biggest travesties in boxing history,I was neither a fan of Meldrick or Chavez I saw the fight live on TV and I remember how heartbreaking it was and still it is...I am just passionate about this subject...It was a Fuking shame either way....Julio in my mind got the biggest gift in Boxing history!!!

NO IT ISN'T and that is why refs dont have a watch, coz it could cause coruption - which is what it would have been if that fight had've continued on the basis of time
If you are objective you have to see that the time is of no relevance, time is just numbers, until the bell rings those numbers dont and shouldn't be relevant
Why dont we just just say that a fighter who is well behind cannot win the fight towards the end of the fight coz of what has gone before hand. The round is 3 minutes long not 2 mins 58 seconds - bet ya wouldn't have a problem with a stppage in the 1st 2 seconds instead of the last

Re: Who Thinks Meldrick Taylor Was Screwed
The ref is not the timekeeper, his sole purpose, is the safety of the fighter.
Meldrick Taylor had a broken eye orbital, had swallowed up to a pint of his own blood, because of an internal injury; if Steele was guilty of anything, he was guilty of stopping the fight too late.
Steele done his job well; Duva should of pulled Taylor out of there a lot earlier, with hindsight, IMO.

Wow, this guy up top saw the HBO special on Taylor and Chavez and is quoting the injuries. But since you want to quote HBO here is one for you "If Meldric Taylor would have continued he would have won a split decision" hahahaha. This is a man who thouroughly outboxed and outclassed his opponent for the first 10 rounds and he only would have won a split decision, that should raise eyebrow's right there, obviously not yours you are just focused on the injuries. All this despite harsh word's from other refs in the sport such as Joe Cortez, Mills Lane, but you are not worried about that though. It's not a referee's job to worry about the time? Insanity. 3 months of training for the biggest fight of your life, you get into the ring and perform brilliantly and it's all taken away from you, and then you have critics that say the fight was correctly stopped? Obviously those critics don't know what dedication is. Broken eye socket? What boxing have you been watching in the last 16 years. So many fighters have went on fighting with broken jaws such as Tarver, or broken eye sockets such as the kid who just fought Cotto, or what about broken hands such RJJ and Mayweather, concussions such as Mosley against Forrest, brutal cuts such as Tyson or internal injuries such as Holyfield. (All of them kept fighting). Premature stoppage, I have seen fighters beat half to death and the ref let's them continue such as (Trinidad Vs Vargas) after the second KD in the twelth Vargas got up drooling, wobbley, and dazed and was still in condition to fight. What about (Mayweather Vs Corrales). The ref could have stopped the fight after the second KD after the brutal beating he was taking but he let the fight go on, (Mosley Vs Forrest 1) Forrest hit Mosley with a tremendous body shot that made Mosley scream but knowing that Mosley is a warrior the ref let it go even though he wanted to stop it. Chavez knocked Taylor down once! Taylor was not wobbled or out on his feet, he didn't even take the whole standing 8 count, he was distracted by Duva and Steele knows that he heard Duva scream to Taylor 3 feet away. It was a robbery and whoever thinks that it wasen't has no form of empathy at all. Chavez went on to have other robberies such as Whitaker and Randall. Don King is the man.
One more thing, all fighter swallow blood, at least if they have cut's in their mouth, you do the percentage on that.

Yeh but at the end of the day the time is still of no relevance whatseover - and if you wanna talk about 3 months of training, wot about JCC, he trained just as hard, but you think he should've been denied a win because of what the clock says. The fight was not stopped coz of the time it was stopped coz he didn't respond when questioned by the ref End of!!

I am British I do not get HBO...
I am just using memory ;)
And the fight was getting closer and closer as it went on, as Taylor was very badly hurt. So I can understand how a judge had Chavez a point up...
I put a lot of money (for me, at 15) on Taylor, everyone with a bit of inside knowledge, knew this would be a devil of a fight for Chavez, and it was, but you cannot be bitter IMO. After 35 minutes and 58 seconds of two fighters giving it their all, at (Taylor) or near (Chavez) their prime.

right i know this is very old topic but was searching on google see this so i had quick look and i wana have my say first theres is red light on taylors corner the red light shows 10 seconds left no way could chavez had been point up taylor outlanded by this much
Taylor landed 418 out of 1,060, Chavez landed 235 out of 634. chavez would not of made it across plus ref should of made sure chavez was in neutral corner all refs do after fighter was knocked down i have seen taylors injurys and i for one think they should of let this brave warrior have his dues not for giving taylor a favour but because he won by 10 rounds to 2 outboxed chavez easily and unless chavez is carl lewis no way he could of got across the ring the ref should of seen taylor looked at his corner and asked him 3rd time by which then fight would of been over poor meldrick got robbed of his victory and im not taylor fan i respect his skills
