Jim Lampley's Most Annoying and Biased Night Yet
There have been plenty of posts in the past about HBO commentators' obvious biases, but for me, Lampley's performance tonight took the cake. Completely over-the-top. Every time Winky countered and got the better of the exchange, Lampley says something like "Oh! Taylor with some very hard shots. Winky feels the need to come back." Every time Winky got Taylor into the ropes and banged on him with an 11-shot combo, and Taylor finally got out by throwing a shot to Winky's gloves and then spinning out, it was "Earlier in the fight, Wright controlled the ropes. Now, Taylor gets out, backing Wright up with a hard shot." And the absolutely most annoying bit was after watching half a fight's worth of Taylor throwing pretty hard shots each one of which landed about 70% glove and 30% head, Taylor finally gets his gloves up for one of Winky's punches and Lampley--who's been either (a) completely silent about Taylor not landing anything cleanly or (b) behaving as if all of these shots were 100% accurate--says "a pretty hard shot from Wright, but pretty much caught by Taylor's gloves!"
I generally think the HBO cast is pretty good, and that people complaining about their supposed bias in a lot of these fights are engaging in a conspiracy theory kind of thing, but this one was ridiculous and hard to listen to. Close fight, should have gone to Winky 115-113 or 116-112. Outlanded Taylor, controlled the pace and action, landed the higher percentage. It was a great fight though--closest anyone's given Winky in a while.

Re: Jim Lampley's Most Annoying and Biased Night Yet
Completely agree. I'm usually a staunch Lampley defender...but that was a fooken joke. He was so biased...it was surreal.

Its funny how when you guys fighters loose you go so low as to blame the announcers of HBO who gave us this PPV caliber fight for free. Since we are throwing blame here on everyone except winky himself, what did Lennox Lewis, Larry Merchant and Harold Ledderman do to cause winky to only get the draw? C'mon, keep the excuses coming sore losers

Re: Jim Lampley's Most Annoying and Biased Night Yet
No, the most annoying night still belongs to Whitaker Delahoya ;D

Re: Jim Lampley's Most Annoying and Biased Night Yet

Thats it. EVERYONE is impressed by wright, but the wrightbrothers wont give JT his due credit. Just shows how much most on this board hate on a good guy like JT. People these days are sorry and in general suck. JT is an exception and is a good man. No one here cares except for a few.

Really... please tell me the rounds that Taylor won...

I had the rounds split even over the whole fight. I think it was a draw and told everyone who watched the fight with me the same thing before they announced the decision. Wrights commet of this being another vargas was uncalled for and out of line. He had planned on saying that if he lost or got a draw

WOW THIS IS REAL STUPID...if you was to be paying this much attention to the commentators instead of the fight...then you really got the wrong fighter winning...you got stuck on the whole image of winky getting rob...because really the only person to blame why winky lost is winky himself...
ANOTHER fight fan...with the conspiracy of their fave fighter losing because he got cheated...no winky wasn't cheated he wasn't rob...he fell short...he didn't take it to the champ at the end...he must of figure he'll look good either way...if he don't get the decision he'll just say he was rob...
WINKY should blame himself...taylor was in a disadvantage at the later rounds with his eye closing due to the headbutt...and taylor did invite winky to the ropes at the 12 rounds but winky just rather call it a night...TRUE CHAMPIONS TAKE IT TO YOU AND TAKE WHAT THEY WANT...WINKY LEFT IT TO THE HANDS OF THE JUDGE AND he already experience a real robber which was with vargas and still he left it at the hands of the judges...SO BLAME WINKY AND ONLY WINKY FOR WHY HE DIDN'T GET THE TITLE.......

Re: Jim Lampley's Most Annoying and Biased Night Yet
Taylor woas undoubtedly the bigger puncher but I can't wait to see the connect percentages. He didn't seem get through Wright's guard that much and a LOT of the shots that were moving Wright backwards and getting called as scoring punches were coming off his arms and gloves. Wright landed a lot of clean shots although he didn't have Taylor's power. It's not Taylor's fault but I think the decision rests on the fact that it was his hometown and cable barons have decided he's their boy for the next few years.
No distrespect to Taylor as he showed more variety of punch in this fight and he's no bum having been very competitive with a couple of the best fighters around. I think it was Wright's fight though.

I wish people would stop saying that. Memphis is NOT Jt's hometown, it is Little Rock and believe me, there is no love loss between those two cities. I heard as many cheers for winky as taylor so lets stop playing the hometown card which is wrong.

I'm not sure what you think you're responding to, given that you're bitching about people saying Winky got robbed and then quoting my post that doesn't say that and has nearly nothing to do with it. Check the thread, mate - all I said was that the commentating was extremely biased. I conceded it was a close fight--all I'm saying is it should have been called that way, rather than having Jim Lampley call the fight like it was a landslide for Taylor (an outcome I don't think anyone else saw).

point me to where anyone "blamed the announcers of HBO" for the judges scoring this fight a draw. All we're saying is the fight commentating was biased. I don't pretend that Jim Lampley's commentating played a role in the judges' RBR scoring---it was just fucking annoying to listen to.

jim lamply never said it was a landslide nor did he called it that way...he pointed out that taylor needed to put his hands up and he needed to get out the ropes...you really just need to watch the fight other then pay attention to the commentators...

yawn. he did call it that way - see the initial post in the thread for evidence. i also did watch the fight - answer me how I could possibly disagree with the commentating if I wasn't watching something different from what they were saying happen on my screen; so maybe it's you who needs to have watched the fight rather than listened to the bs that was strewn by the guys with the microphones.
Winky won by a round or two -- far better accuracy, landed more, and completely controlled the action for most of the fight. It was close--closer than the numbers show, even. But Taylor just doesn't get credit for "landing the harder shots" when every one of those shots was partially/largely blocked. He also had no say in the way the fight progressed. Winky dominated it on the ropes (and Taylor wasn't there because he wanted to be) and was barely edged in the middle of the ring (contrary to the overblown views of the commentators). Close match, I had it 115-113 Winky. He wasn't "robbed," and it wasn't "another Vargas," but it was the wrong outcome, and I thought it was pretty clearly wrong.

I don't care. I really don't care. Personally, I thought Lennox Lewis was outstanding but Lampley wasn't calling it the way it should have been called. Simple as that.
The commentators have no bearing on teh figth, I know that but fans still don't deserve to listen to paonfully biased commentary. It has nothing to do with the fight itself, and it's not an excuse for Winky by any means, just the truth.

I had never heard such crap out of Lampley before....Winky blocked a huge amount of those punches...and Lampley was acting like Taylor was landing bombs!!! Lampley needs lasik surgery.....

Re: Jim Lampley's Most Annoying and Biased Night Yet
Lampley seems to follow some written or unwritten rule about cheerleading for the franchise's man. Not too stupid when you consider who pays his wage. He' s probably got Oscar pics in his sock draw and Taylor pics hidden in the bathroom

Yeah, you are right. Lampley was a comlete jackass in that fight. Least Larry Merchant for once did the right thing and spoke the truth, defending Whitaker. Seemed like even Jones was somewhat rooting for Oscar it seems. Lampley should be fired IMO, he has proven that all he is is a Yes man, who knows nothing about boxing and does not love boxing. His commentating in the last round particularly was horrible. The first time I watched the fight it fooled me even into thinking Taylor had won the 12th, when in reality, he only landed maybe one clean punch.

The judges weren't from Memphis, the commentators weren't from memphis, and the neither fighters were from Memphis. Please keep the conspiracies coming. Hell, Lampley's the only good thing HBO has going.

Ok...listen and stop twisting my words. I like Lampley. I never said he was in on any conspiracy. I really didn't think he called the fight from an unbiased point of view. Taylor is an HBO fighter and they are probably closely affiliated. I'm not saying he did it intentionally or anything like that. I'm just saying I don't think the fight was called down the middle. I never said anything about judges. I never said anything about conspiracies. I'm not holding that against Taylor. I'm not saying this had any bearing on the fight. It's NOT an excuse for Winky only getting a draw.
I like Lampley, his voice, his excitement, his passion, his voice gives the feeling that I'm watching a big fight. But, he has his flaws. When De La Hoya or Taylor is fighting, he tends to focus more on them then the other fighter. It's a flaw but he's still a fine commentator.
Do I need to put it any clearer?

This is IT.... THE reason why we keep seeing such shit on PPV... we've allowed the institutions to dick us around and make us THINK certain fights HAVE to be PPV, so when we start bitching about the state of boxing, they throw us a bone, give us a good fight on HBO, (which isn't free, by the way) and we get down on our knees and THANK THEM... we're fans of a sport where violence and aggression is expected, but apprarently we ourselves don't have the balls to stand up and say "hey fuckers, we shouldn't be paying to see this shit in the first place...."

It needs to be on network tv. It really does but...I don't envision that unless something like Nascar or hockey falls off the map. It should be on ABC or CBS or something. What else do they have on Saturday night?

1. Pleeeeeeeeeeeezzz.... Larry Merchant RETIRE!
How many times has this biased old crow forgotten boxers names (or what the hell he was talking about) in the middle of his monologues only to have to be bailed out by someone? Does he have a clause that says he has to die on camera?
2. Jim Lampley
Anyone who says that Lampley is the best simply does not know boxing. Lampley is a lackee that came to the big times because he had a small time job at ABC commentating fights when a young man named MIKE TYSON started showing up WEEKLY that show. The whole act was doon moved to Saturday's on Wide World of Sports... That's why ESP can show classics all week long... He is a slave to whomever pays the check, and will gladly tell you so. Commentator for a network-yes, journalist-no.
3. Max Kellerman
Too much truth for mainstream!!! I definitely don't think so, but many of the conservative types will. I love the way he gets behind his commentary. Don't get me wrong... I don't agree with everything he says, but his resource of knowledge and the way he delivers it tells me that he has BOTH of the guys above shaking in their pants and looking for a way to keep him in his place... at the FAR table!
***Lennox Lewis is only commentating because Jones, Jr. got completely DROPPED by HomeBoyOffice...

Dude! Lampley is well spoken and comes of with a professional finish. He keeps everything in line. and sounds good to the ear. Max has knowledge yes , but that does not make him a good Commentator,? Max makes everyone feel uncomfortable, because he so argumentative and arrogant .. ! Max is horrible on HBO BAD , giving those looks to his commentary partners, like you guys don't what the fu#$ is going on. Which they don't ! but doing that makes for an uncomfortable environment for everyone, including the most important people. the ones watching the F$#ing show ! And Don't tell me I don't know boxing. ! That’s amateur Real amateur ! You want boxing knowledge and some style Teddy Atlas is the man !

Agreed on Lampley but I still like Kellerman.
And Lewis > RJJ imo.

Re: Jim Lampley's Most Annoying and Biased Night Yet
Lords--no one said you didn't know boxing... I said Lampley is a lackee who speaks for the person who works for the network, simple as that. Ask Lampley... he'll tell you, and defend it as their right.
2nd Round--I really think that Lewis is the first person in a while who is actually calling the fight. (Merchant and Lampley DO NOT do that! )

My Bad , I thought you were referring to my previous post about Lampley being one of the best commentators , when you said . "Anyone that thinks Lampley is best , does not know boxing". I Thought that was being directed at me ?.. Were good bro!
