Ironically, Taylor has become the new Wright...
He does not land punches, he slaps, he lacks excitement... All charges some feel Taylor is guilty of; the exact same charges, that led to Winky disappearing from the States for long periods, and travelling the globe, in search of fights.
But at the grand age (for a world class boxer) of 34, it is suddenly became in vogue to appreciate the skills of Wright, that some have been enjoying for over 10 years now.
Taylor is only 27, and yet still has '0' despite fights with the likes of Hopkins and Winky.
Rather than appreciate his talent when he is in mid 30s, and hark back to the days, when he was fighting the likes of Hopkins and Wright, perhaps it is time for some people to realise Taylor is very much for real. He may lack the flash of Mayweather and the respect given to Wright and Barrera, but have no doubt, as we speak, he is very much their equal...
Taylor is as good as boxing gets in 2006 IMO. ;)

well said BK ;)
What amazes me is that Winky didn't ask for an imediate rematch? He must be planning on getting the Oscar fight because appart from him there are no bigger fights at 160 for Winky Wright, or he is smart enough to know that Taylor will only improve and he wouldn't win the rematch anyways. ;)

Re: Ironically, Taylor has become the new Wright...
Taylor is huge compare to Winky
Taylor is stronger compared to Winky
Winky should not have fought Taylor IMO, but he did and almost won the fight (for me he actually won)
Give credit for Winky for not sitting in his division where he dominates
-
Re: Ironically, Taylor has become the new Wright...
ya i think as a fighter winky is done getting better.
taylor has plenty of room to get better
-
Re: Ironically, Taylor has become the new Wright...
Winky's the better fighter & in now way is he like Wright...in any way.
Wright won. Taylor did not. The fight should have gone to Wright.
Now...that being said...I aint saying that I'm not a Taylor fan...I just don't think that he won that fight...or the first Hopkins fight. The second one...yes.
Taylor has room to grow...but only if he concentrates more on boxing than being a KO artist.
-
Re: Ironically, Taylor has become the new Wright...
He is good for boxing, very good in that he challenges the best and I don't care what anyone says, the last 3 fights were extremely close, but I feel he only won one. And out of the ring....I don't see how anyone can dislike him. I really don't.

Thats because he beat him. Which means he could do the same thing in a rematch and still not get the decision so whats the point? ;)

A rematch would pay him more than any other fight.

I still disagree... it was a draw ... Winky did nothign to win impressively. If you add in the partial blocked punches of Taylor their connection count was pretty even, and WInky was hurt a little during that fight while Taylor was never in trouble... except by his balance. If you look at Winky by fight 26 he was nowhere near as skilled as Taylor is now.

and that is all Winky is about at this stage in the game, not legacy or he would of forked out to have the all the belts on the line.
He could of been Undisputed Champion at 154lb and 160lb!!! Thats history right there!!
If I was Winky I would of coughed up $200 000 to wear all 3 belts. He either wasn't confident of the win or is a damn tightass!!
He will end up taking the rematch in December because Oscar won't be stupid enough to step in the ring with him.

It was a heat of the moment thing imo. It was a high pressure fight, and he thought he won, and he was robbed. Lot of strain.

once the dust settles a rematch is inevitable....Winky will change his mind after weighing up the options

Taylor is a damn phony who let Lou Dibella dry hump him! He DID NOT win the second fight either. I give him credit for bein so young and havin such close fights with Hopkins and Winky. That is something. And he is talented, but he did not beat either of them. Ever.

IHO of course ;)
I thought the first fight was a draw after first watching but then I changed my view after. I think he won the second fight.
-
Re: Ironically, Taylor has become the new Wright...
I beg to differ. In the second fight, it was nearly identical to the first, although B-hop did not hurt Taylor as bad down the stretch, he did win more early rounds and thus deserved the victory IHO.

Re: Ironically, Taylor has become the new Wright...
:D Amazing post, couldnt agree more CC, how anyone can knock the kid is amazing, he fights hopkins twice and winky, talk about a rough path to take, the kid is scared of no-one.

I totally disagree,I don't think Winky or Taylor are similar in any way whatsoever in the ring.Taylor is likeable honest and a gentleman but had he not had the power advantage,he would not have got that draw.Winky landed more, and early on,it was difficult to give JT any of the rounds, most of his shots were being blocked, whereas Winky was landing flush early on,his timing was awesome. The nly thing I was dissappointed in Winky and JT stated this, was that if you are going to go for someone's title, you have to fight the FULL 12 rounds.Winky didn't fight the 11th,possibly giving the title away.
And no way is he their equal, against Hopkins,he looked amatuerish at times, particularly in the first fight and again,in the Winky fight, nice combos but hands too low,and he was the bigger guy but was backed up waaay to easily. He gets my respect for the fights he has taken and he is a great ambassador but on that night,I thought Winky won.

The point I am trying to make is Taylor seems to be under appreciated at the moment, by some. Much like Wright was in the mid/late 90s.
Wright was only appreciated by the masses, when he was 30+ years old, and I would not like to see the same thing happen to Taylor.
I agree style wise, they are different fighters.... ;)

I still disagree, those 2 are under appreciated for different reasons,JT is respected by most as a great sportsman and a good fighter but come on,3 fights,3 close decisions and he gets ALL3!!That's not under appreciating, that's flattery. He deserves credit for the fights he has taken but he has been flattered by at least 2 of those decisions, and like I said,he has sooo many things to work on,there's only so much credit you can give him and I say this as a guy that likes him.

Of course Taylor has things to work on, but hopefully he has 5+ years to do that. Maybe he has had a little luck, keeping his '0' intact from his last three fights, but there is argument as why to he should of, as well as why he should not of...
Taylor has shown, he is at or near the top of the sport now. He can count himself amongst the Winky's, Mayweather's, Barrera's and Hopkins' of this boxing world IMO. And on top of that, like you suggest, there is no doubt, room for improvement! ;)

Man, I'm disapointed in you. I respected your knowledge of the sport and still do but you are giving Taylor too much credit. He is not on the same level as Mayweather, Barrera , and damn sure not Hopkins. He has had three close fights, with two great fighters. But in reality, he probably should have lost all three. The draw wasn't a horrible decision or nothing, but he definately didn't win the fight. And the reason he doesn't get a bunch of respect is because HBO has force fed him down hardcore boxing fans throats at the expense of two great fighters, stealing one of the best MW's titles in the process.
