Oscar De La Hoya set to retire!!!
He's set to retire tomorrow after not getting the mayweather fight. A conference call has been arranged for Wednesday and it is expected that De La Hoya will either retire or, at least, announce that he won't be fighting again for the remainder of 2006.
-
Re: Oscar De La Hoya set to retire!!!
PLS FIGHT MAYWEATHER! PLS!
-
Re: Oscar De La Hoya set to retire!!!
Eh, it's good for him he goes out on top...fighting Trinidad or Mosley again would be good

awwww HORSE SHAT!!!!!!!!!!!! this is a horrible move for him....the PBF fight is prime and he needs to capitalize on it now......Margarito definitely has a punchers chance with PBF and the fight may never happen....I don't think he should possibly throw away the biggest selling PPV ever like this...it may never happen if thats the case.....this will be a sad day for boxing if he does announce this tomorrow....

Re: Oscar De La Hoya set to retire!!!
Sounds like more narcissim and affectation from the Goldenboy.
He'll no doubt say he's going to quit only for a huge announcement at the last minute that the Mayweather fight has come through.
Then he'll be pictured looking skywards for inspiration and guidance and then he'll announce , 'I'm ready,' , and everyone will cheer and roar, there will be 3 billion PPV's and he will be on the cover of all major magazines, probably bring out a song and write his autobiography.
Oh and him and his child will feature in Vogue or Time Magazine.
They may even feature a picture of him blessing some poor person, or giving out meals to the homeless, perhaps heal a blind man.
But other than that I really like him :P
-
Re: Oscar De La Hoya set to retire!!!
I think he was inspired by Hopkins going out with a bang. With Mayweather there's a risk he could lose or look terrible in losing or winning and he wouldn't want to go out like that
-
Re: Oscar De La Hoya set to retire!!!
Oscar really needed that fight. Five career mega fights (Whitaker,Quartey,Mosley,Trinidad,Hopkins) and he did not perform great in one of those matches. PBF would have been a mega fight for him but now he will retire with never performing brilliant in a super fight, he will probably be the only HOF that has that against him.
He will alway's been known for his great performances in his two grudge matches (Vargas,Mayorga)

Mayorga?
I'd rather loss against a great fighter trying my absoulote best one last time instead of beating a mediocre fighter and going out on top. PBF is number 1, if ODH really wants to finally put the critics/doubters to rest and build a brilliant legacy behind him he should fight the guy....And imo, it dosen't matter if he wins or losses...It's the fact that he had the balls to fight him.
His last stand, so to say.
I can't believe the guy is retiring, sucks

I'm pretty sure ODH dosen't think so, so why dosen't he fight him?
He hasn't got that much to lose but absouletly everything to gay.

Re: Oscar De La Hoya set to retire!!!
WBC super welterweight champion Oscar De La Hoya won't announce his future plans until tomorrow, but Kassim Ouma, who is promoted by Oscar and fights in the same division, may have let the cat out of the bag. According to the Daily Monitor in Ouma's native Uganda, Team Ouma is celebrating Oscar's retirement because it will allow Kassim to fight for the vacant WBC title earlier than expected.

I would retire if I was him. What does beating Floyd do for him? (apart from the $$)
The history books will just read that Floyd was to small for him if he wins. Even though right now PBF is the popular no1.p4p pick, who is going to remember that in years to come if Oscar KHTFO. I don't see any big names on Mayweathers record above 135 pound.

Re: Oscar De La Hoya set to retire!!!
ODLH isn't retiring. He's allowing Shane to try and get a fight with PBF after Vargas and get one last big payday for Shane. After PBF disposes of Shane, ODLH is gonna come out and try to fight PBF.
Five reasons why ODLH - PBF will happen next year
5. Shane beat ODLH twice, PBF will beat Shane, ODLH will get a chance to kill two birds with one stone.
4. Mosley - Mayweather will be a HUGE moneymaker for Golden Boy Promotions.
3. ODLH has a huge ego and he wants to go out knowing he was the best. He will try at least.
2. 30 Million Dollars. Letting Mayweather defeat more big names just makes PBF a bigger PPV attraction and in turn, puts more money in the pot for ODLH.
1. Let's face it, De La Hoya is a huge famewhore. He needs this fight to stay in the spotlight. He's the Paris Hilton of boxing.

I think that De La Hoya planned to retire after the Mayorga fight. He'll concentrate now on the promoting side of the business where he'll still be in the spotlight albeit in a different manner. I don't think he'll gain much praise from another fight with Shane Mosley (Other than maybe his own satisfaction) as public opinion will always say it wasn't the same Shane he'd originally faced (in the first encounter at least) blah blah blah.
I really believe that a fight with PBF is a non-starter, not because De La Hoya wants to avoid it, but because De La Hoya has stated that he would not fight the son of his trainer and he would not fight anyone without his current trainer, therefore, a fight with PBF can't happen. Simple as that. I'd love to see De La Hoya and Mayweather Jnr fight but i'd have loved to see Hagler V Hearns 2! Unfortunately fights that we'd love to see sometimes don't happen.
It was a great peformance (against Mayorga) for De La Hoya to retire on, and best of luck to him if that is what he chooses to do.

Re: Oscar De La Hoya set to retire!!!
Let him retire then. Good for Oscar. He will probably say it was from injuries
-
Re: Oscar De La Hoya set to retire!!!
Hell if he doesn't want to fight any more then he should retire and make babies and count his money. No reason to stick around so long that he just wants to pick up paydays.

well he beat pernell and ike hands down, was very competietive in the 1st mosely fight mosely was just brilliant that nite--he came back to beat mosely in the second fight only to get jobbed, and of course he totally outclassed tito as we all know---he just had no business at middle---

Re: Oscar De La Hoya set to retire!!!
plus he fought and brutalized a better vargas then tito or mosely beat.......nando was all juiced up and motivated to whip dlh's ass and dlh still outlasted him and knocked him TFO
plus his first real megafight was against rafael ruelas for the lightweight belt---alot of people forget this fight and why i dont know...ruelas was unbeaten and seen as the favorite to whip dlh--and dlh starched him easy

After the Pernell Whitaker fight in 1997 122 sports writers commented on the fight in ring magazine, 85% of them thought that Pernell Whitaker won the fight, so for you to say ODH won with ease is a silly remark. Other than that Larry Mechant, Harold Letterman, and Jim Lampley all scored the fight for Whitaker 7-5 with Pernell cruising the last two rounds. After the fight Oscar was not even happy and he just won the WW title. Ditto for the Quartey fight, even though many boxing analyst were split on this fight 50/50 Quartey had the slight majority for the sports writers, and no way was it easy for Oscar, damn the fight was a split decision, what do you mean. The Trinidad fight was finally when Oscar recieved the majority of the sports writers votes when it came to the decision, many thought Oscar won 7-5 where about 20% gave Tito the nod, whatever way you scored it it was a long way from a dominant performance. The Shane Mosley fight (1) was not a close fight, I don't know what you mean. Shane won the fight at least 8-4 and he dominated the last 6 rounds which are the championship rounds, many analyst scored that fight 9-3 so sorry. As far as Hopkins, he was just a better fighter than ODH, nobody gave Trinidad the benefit of the doubt when he lost too Hopkins even though he was a blown up WW, they just stated how brilliant Hopkins was, so ODH should suffer the same fate, he got KO'd plain an simple. One more thing Mosley Vs ODH 2 was not a mega fight, Shane Mosley had showed signs of slowing down after he recieved the head butt from Vernon Forrest and was never the same again, I agree that Oscar should have won that fight, but the fight was lackluster, slow pace, and no where near as exciting as the first fight. ODH was not facing the same Mosley

A mega fight is when two champions in their primes and at the top of the boxing world face off. Ruelas Vs ODH was not a mega fight. Secondly Trinidad faced Vargas when he was at the top of his game, undefeated and destined for greatness. He ruined Vargas, and Vargas showed signs of slowing down after that fight (getting knocked down by journeymen). Also the Vargas fight with ODH was very competitive and close until Oscar landed that big right hand that wobbled Vargas, one round later came the KO. Vargas and Mayorga where damaged goods by the time ODH got to them.

Re: Oscar De La Hoya set to retire!!!
De la Hoya said: "I'll only retire once and felt too much pressure to decide.
"At this point I'm leaning towards not retiring. I do want to fight on because this is what I love."
The 33-year-old has been pondering his future since he stopped Ricardo Mayorga in May to win the WBC light middleweight title in May.
But the 1992 Olympic gold medalist, who has won titles in five weight classes, refused to be rushed into a decision so soon after that dramatic victory in Las Vegas.
De la Hoya said: "The decison was too much for me, it was overwhelming. That's why I postponed making it.
"But when and if I decide to have my next fight it will be Floyd Mayweather Jr.
"That's the only name I can come up with that will satisfy me to train for three months and prepare myself. It's the only name out there for me."
Mayweather would have to move from up from 147 pounds to 154 for the fight.
And de la Hoya admitted: "I realise Mayweather can beat me, but I still feel this body has some gas left in it."
-----------------
So he will only fight if he gets mayweather, which we all want, but he won't get. If Only.........
-
Re: Oscar De La Hoya set to retire!!!
I feel sick :puke:

Floyd son do me a favour, put De La Hoya into retirement, and then whip your daddy's ass.

I think you may be onto something ;) it makes perfect sense from Oscars point of view but the only problem is Vargas is going to beat Mosley in the rematch and even if he didn't Mosley would beat Mayweather.
I think Floyd has to beat Hatton or Baldomir (if he beats Gatti) before Oscar to legitimize his 140 and 147 status!! True Mosely would be an even greater win so at least one of those fights should happen first then we got a megafight!!

why would mayweather need to beat hatton to cement his status at 147 (i dont even need to mention baldomir) rickys camp is saying, not till 07 at least, not to mention he just had a tough fight with collazo
mosely/mayweather would be a good fight.........but shane is a little past his prime right now

I'm a man of my words, so when a champ like Oscar speaks, i accept what he says.
His points are cleared: he won't retire, but he won't fight again this year. What's so hard to believe about that?
You should never assume on the news before it is announced and that is exactly what you did on an earlier post. In that instance, i chose not to believe what you wrote and that's why you're a bunch of bull. =)

sry mate you need to re-read my post.... I never said Vargas would beat Mayweather and I didn't imply that PBF has to beat Hatton to cement his status at 147. If Gatti beats Baldomir then I will be satisfied that Mayweather has nothing to prove at 147 but if Baldo wins then he and Hatton have earn't their place as the no1 of their respective divisions and Mayweather has proven nothing to me except that he was the ruler of the lightweights.
Mosley has only ever lost to guys that had obvious physical advantages over him, something Floyd doesn't have. If you think Zab Judah was a handful for the first 5 rounds then Mosley is Floyd's nightmare. ;)

Re: Oscar De La Hoya set to retire!!!
Oscar needs to make up his mind. He's an idiot coming back for just one fight against El Matador.
