I like Buddy Mcgirt, he should be around for a while. Atlas and Steward are legions, Steward is probably the best active in my opinion. Cud D'Amato was great. I recently heard the Pernell Whitaker was training, he should be a great trainer. He defense in the ring was perfection (Ring General)

Freddy Roach? Awesom trainer without a doubt. But Steward is a step above them all. Jermain Taylor should have shown a little more loyalty to his former trainer instead of releasing him after two victories vs P4P number one. That's horrible.

I know the American and British trainers, but some of these Latino trainers are meant to be very good.
I always liked George Benton, he was a top notch trainer
'Buddy' McGirt looks the real deal.
But I think personally Eddie Futch's protege Thel Torrance is boxings best at the moment, but he is not in vogue like some others.
But if we are talking all time, I say Ray Arcel ;)

Personally I like Joe Goosen.
Keeps the corner work calm and concise - worked wonders for the likes of Diego Corrales especially, Casamayor, even Shane Mosley (Winky rematch), was loyal for years to the Ruelas brothers, who else? Theres others.
I don't much like Buddy McGirt. I dont know...when his fighters losing he doesn't seem to me to make good points. I noticed that in Gatti-Mayweather. Even with Tarver sometimes. He can't turn it around. Almost a 'front runner' type trainer.
Steward is maybe the best out there though.

I would say Steward is how you Americans say the best 'offensive' trainer probably in the history of boxing. But IMO there were/are better 'all round' trainers. But Manny is cute, he turned many in the Kronk into a great attacking fighters; not least the featherfisted defensive amateur going by the name 'The Motor City Cobra' Tommy Hearns. ;)

I like Roach's work with Paquiao, it is top notch. I saw a really good training video on here somebody posted a while back, impressive.
BUT as I've said before....letting Toney get that out of shape, and letting Tyson go days without training, sometimes as a trainer you just gotta put on the daddy pants.....and that is where Roach is lacking IMO.

Most of the top Boxing coaches are with the amatuers. I cant think of any of the top Pro trainers who have brought a boy through from scratch who anyone has mentioned. With the Pros it depends on the connections you have. The Kronk gym wasnt down to Mannys training abilty, He had good coaches in there doing the work who never get a mention. Goosmans done it wiyh a number of fighters, Freddies a great guy, but I dont know of anything Hes created from scratch In every country there are top Amatuer Clubs thats where the top coaches will be found, producing from the grass roots. Creating the biulding blocks for the future, getting the foundations right for progression. Most Pro trainers wouldnt know where to start.

Couldn't agree more, the best trainers are people who get a peice of clay and sculpt it into a boxer, not ones who adjust the clay slightly once its been molded.
Thats why I hold people like Cus Damato in high esteem over some one like say Roach.

It's all about money and ego, once upon a time trainers like Steward, Roach, Atlas took clay and created a boxer, they have done that and been successful, now they can sit back and rest on their reputations and takeover the careers of main stream boxers.

Yeah but what would you do in his position? He was training with a virtually unknown manager in a gym where he was the only world class boxer. Going to Detroit to train with one of the best trainers, sparring with the best fighters, surrounded by top professionals, come on man it was a no brainer.
Now he is world champ he owes it to boxing and the fans as much as himself to reach his full potential and he needs a top team around him for that.
Now imagine if you started you boxing career, with Dave the local boxing gym's trainer, a decent ex amatuer. Now you are really good, and start to climb to the top, get a title shot and win, then defend it but controversially.
People are slating you left and right saying you didn't beat Hopkins, you got a gift decision, others saying you're too green and raw. Then you get Winky Wright, probably p4p 1 or 2 in the world. What do you do?
Personally I'd expect Dave to advise me to go with the best trainer now I could afford it, and wish me Good luck.
