Hopkins:No one can say JT is a superstar.
http://doghouseboxing.com/chee/Chee_0623a06.htm
Bernard Fernandez's (Philly.com) latest column Fernandez catches up with Bernard Hopkins and gets the retired Champs feelings on Taylor vs Wright. Hopkins said he has no axe to grind with Taylor, but he can understand Winky's point of view that Taylor gets preferential treatment.
Hopkins is quoted by Fernandez as saying: "I was hoping a clear winner would emerge. I have no ax to grind with Jermain Taylor or anyone else. The middleweight division, and all of boxing, needs clarification as to who the real champions are. It's not about who holds the titles. It's about who's the best. Everybody's telling me Winky deserved to win. I saw the fight. There were a lot of close rounds. I'm not upset that it was a draw. But you knew they were going to give (favorable treatment) to Jermain because he's supposed to be the next big thing. Boxing politics are all on his side. And, to a degree, I can understand that. Jermain Taylor or somebody like him needs to step up and be recognized as the top dog. There has to be an order to things so that they make sense.
Hopkins added: "But right now I don't think anybody, even in Arkansas (Taylor's home state), can say Jermain is a superstar based on his last three fights. There are people who will swear he lost all three of those fights. There are some who say he won all three, too, but you're talking about a lot of unanswered questions. Who's right? Who's wrong? It's not Jermain's fault, but that's the million-dollar question."

Re: Hopkins:No one can say JT is a superstar.
Well damn... I hate to hear that, but really only because I believe it to be true. I'm a big fan of Taylor's, as well as a resident of Little Rock, but I still think he has a lot to prove. Even he admits that. But in his defense, I think he has still done a great job so far. I suspect he will hone his skills a bit more and continue to show us everything he's got. Personally, I would love to see such a good kid become a success.

That can't be A quote from Bernard Hopkins there's about 30 paragraphs missing :lickish:

Yeah...I hated him after the 1st B-HOP fight then I heard him speak and I saw some of the boxing specials of/on him...man..... He is one gracious, humble, well mannered, great person....he won me over as a fan but I would like to see some fights without the controversey....

Very much agreed. But damn, as long as he's fighting the elite like BHOP and Wink, there will be controversy! I think he'll get back into the swing of things (pun intended), and start knocking mofo's out again. If you've ever seen any of his fights prior to BHOP, you'll notice that he was quite the aggressive fighter to the point of overwhelming his opponents. Hopefully, we'll see more of that in fights to come.

He's a good fighter...with lots of promise...but he is far from a superstar.

He's got tremendous potential though, especially when you consider that at only 27 he has by far superseeded what Winky and Bernard had achieved at this stage in their careers.
It seems to me that most of the best middleweights of recent years took time to mature into the great champions they would become, Hopkins, Hagler, Monzon etc.
To be aged only 27 and to have had 3 career defining fights behind you already is pretty impressive.
I expect him to be the dominant force in the middle weight division for a good 5 or 6 years if he applies himself.

Career defining fights? Do you thik that is a good thing? Just curious. JT fans say yes, others say no but what will they say in 20 years from now?

He will be though.
He's 27 and fought the only other two superstars in the division already and held onto his belts.
He's at the top of the hill and it's all easy walking from now.

Re: Hopkins:No one can say JT is a superstar.
Doubt it. He won't get by Sturm the way he looked the other night.

Re: Hopkins:No one can say JT is a superstar.
Hopkins is right; Taylor is no boxing superstar, because sadly there has been no worldwide boxing superstar since perhaps Evander or Oscar de la Hoya... :'(

Re: Hopkins:No one can say JT is a superstar.
What of Hamed Britkid? he "was" a superstar for a time. Wasn't as long as Delahoya, but he WAS one.

Maybe a British superstar, but he never quite make made Worldwide superstar; Barrera saw to that IMO...

Re: Hopkins:No one can say JT is a superstar.
IWO, there are plenty of star caliber boxers out there...everyone's just too gotdam critical to give them enough credit.
There are players, shakers, & movers out there along the same lines of the late 70's & mid 80's stars...but everyone wants to pick 'em apart too much.
We got a deep pool of talent...people just need to be a bit more accepting.

Maybe so, but just because you are brilliant, it does not make you a superstar IMO. I say a Superstar, is a non British fighter my old dear has heard of.

Agreed...but notice I said star caliber...not Super Star.
I think that alot of the fighters that will be GOATs are going unnoticed or highly scrutinized right now.
Take Barrera for instance...he is one of the greatest of my gen. No doubt...but the Pac loss...the one TKO loss has RUINED him in the eyes of many fans...don't you see that as being a bit bullshittish or fickle?
I do.
I just can't write off one of the better boxers of the last 5-10 for one or two losses especially when he's got 67 fights under his belt with 2 wins & 42 of those he's won by knockout.
Don't make sense.

Yourself, like myself, are being pretentious, because we know a lot about boxing, we can tell the chaff from the real deal. A Tyson is a boxing superstar, but a Ricardo Lopez, Roy Jones Jr, Pernell Whitaker and Oscar de la Hoya are finer fighters IMO... ;)

Re: Hopkins:No one can say JT is a superstar.
Taylor is not a superstar yet, but imo he has the makings to be a great fighter..
He just has to polish up on his defence a little

Re: Hopkins:No one can say JT is a superstar.
I just can't believe Hopkins is still crying. :nopity: That's just another reason for me not to give him respect. He acts like he was winning pretty and convincingly all those years. He didn't even fight in the 2 fight with JT until he saw him tired. He almost got knocked down in both fights from single right hands and he knew he was in with the better man. I don't see how anyone can say he has class and he's such a sore loser. The fight with Winky is another story cause there were so many close rounds that it really could have gone either way although I had it for Wink by a slight margin. Hopkins is trying to say it in a respectful way but if he really wants to be respectful, he would SHUT HIS ASS UP!!! I thought he was out of the picture.

blah blah blah
If you went throughthe article you'd realise that Hopkions aint whining about anything except the fact that there's no superstar and no dominant champion. And thats a good reason, the guy thats supposed to be the man in the division struggles in his last 3. granted theywere tough opponents, but he should have lost 2. He's being groomed by HBO and he doesn't need that

He wants all the respect and doesn't wanna give none so that makes him a lame. He didn't win any of the fight with JT if go by how many rounds each of them won so I don't know how thick your glasses are. He didn't fight until JT was tired and he wants to win a decision for fightin 4 or 5 rounds, Please. Read between the lines too. He's trying to make it seem like he's not causing a stir but if he doesn't, why bring it up? I don't recall him fighting top competition back to back to back. DOn't believe the hype. The man is a fraud.

In his hometown where he would have been robbed like Wright was...Luke...you know that Taylor looks great against lesser caliber fighters but actual tacticians confuse him.
I like Taylor...but for some reason...you can't deal with his faults...why is that you can't admit that Taylor has some pretty obvious defects? :splurt:

Aint Bernard the one that was saying he wanted Jermain Taylor to beat Winky because it was good for the Middleweight division an dthe future and he wanted to see it survive and Jermain to succeed. That means he expected things from Jermain, and he didn't get them, you don't represent the Middleweight division getting a fight handed to you in Hopkins eyes ;)

If that's the case then why did he want gift decisions against JT. Winky was a way more proven fighter than JT so why didn't Hopkins fight him? Because Winky didn't have any flaws that Hopkins was able to exploit. So he figured he'll fight an unexperienced guy and win on that. Didn't happen. Winky is a guy that no one is going to dominate.

How many times did you hear him say that JT was the better and busier man. If he was real, he would have given him credit in public and said "well, I should have fought more and not wait till the last couple of rounds". He got all his fans to hate and hate on JT and they will probably do that for the remainder of Jermain's career. They are going to look for anything negative to say about JT. Do you think that Hopkins would have beaten Winky? WIth what? That right hand? Please! He would have been lucky to land a punch on Winky and that's why he didn't fight him instead of JT. Although I had Winky slightly ahead, I could see where others would see Jermain winning or a draw. Everyone is afraid to say something bad about Hopkins cause they don't want to say something different from what everyone else is saying or the so-called experts are saying, but I speak the truth. You guys are more worried about getting a cool click than saying what you really see. I don't come here to make friends or get cc's or be biased. Just speak the truth.

YOU GOT IT ALL WRONG! FUCK A COOL CLICK, BHOP WAS ROBBED. TALK ABOUT BEING COOL? I GET RIDACULED EVERYDAY FOR SPEAKING MY MIND ON HERE NOT BECAUSE I LIKE B HOP BUT BECUAE JT IS EXTREMELY OVER RATED AND THE CHOSEN GOLDEN BOY. HE DID NOT WIN THE FIRST B HOP FIGHT IF YOU STICK WITH THE SO CALLED "YOU MUST BEAT THE CHAMP" HENCE MAKING THE SECOND FIGHT NOT REALLY CONVINCING EITHER. ALSO THE WINKY FIGHT? ANOTHER SQUEAK BY! HE WILL LOSE, LOSE, AND LOSE SOME MORE. HE CAN'T EVEN BEAT AN OLD MAN AND HE IS WHAT 27? NOW GO KISS JT'S ASS AFTER HIS NEXT FIGHT. MAYBE SIT FRONT ROW SO YOU CAN HAVE HIS SWEAT HIT YOU IN YOUR MOUTH

Re: Hopkins:No one can say JT is a superstar.
I think the whole point you're trying to make is.
Just because you have a win over a great fighter doesn't make you a great fighter. You need to stay consistant and build your own legacy instead of trying to live off others. And that you need to earn your legacy and not get it handed to you. Which is probably what everyone's beef is with Jermain Taylor :)

I don't see how anyone can say he has class and he's such a sore loser. The fight with Winky is another story cause there were so many close rounds that it really could have gone either way although I had it for Wink by a slight margin. Hopkins is trying to say it in a respectful way but if he really wants to be respectful, he would SHUT HIS a** UP!!! I thought he was out of the picture.
Also if you watched the Tarver Hopkins fight B hop walked over to emannuel as soon as the fight was over and said only great things for him to tell Jermaine
BX730ny you get-a cool-click from me for being straight up....even though I don't know how to give em ;D
HEY FATSANDY THERE IS NOTHING COOL ABOUT THAE ABOVE JT LOVERS COMMENTS. THIS IS EXACTLY WHY YOU CAN'T GIVE A COOL CLICK!

Re: Hopkins:No one can say JT is a superstar.
The bottom line with Taylor is this...the kid is good...he aint great...but he's pretty damned good.
You would have to be to even hang with Hopkins & Wright...but he did not beat Wright & he did not beat Hopkins...he just got the win & the draw.
Now...while that may be enough for most Taylor fans...it's not enough for this one.
I'm a fan of the kid...but he just has to many faults that he is not fixing. He's relying on his power to pull him through & that will be his down fall in the end.
Taylor, IWO, will never live up to the hype...not because he's not a good enough fighter & not because he won't grow...but because HBO built the ladder to the thrown a bit too high & he's got a lot of climbing to do before he can sit in the king's seat & rule the ranks.
Personally...in the end...I think that it's just that simple.

He definitely has alot to work on as far as his fight game goes, like keeping his hands in a better defensive position for one. What separates him from others is that, while he could have sat on those Hopkins victories for awhile, he fought the best available guy. I think Winky won but he was no pushover. I hope he gets better cause with his great attitude and heart, we will get to see a whole lot of meaningful fights.
