I have to Backyard spar this....any tips?
http://motomaniack.bebo.com
Go down to the flashbox....i am spar/fighting the guy in the black singlet. He is bigger, stronger and faster but I do boxing training and have sparred a couple of times. I just recently lost a trainer but am looking for another.
I forgot to mention that the other guy in the vid is not me...it is one of my friends who doesnt box....i do however. I have to spar the black singlet guy in about 4 weeks
Is there anytips you can give me on how to beat this guy?

Re: I have to Backyard spar this....any tips?
He does look like he is a monster for his weight, so you should stay at distance from him and try and jump in to get past his reach where you can land some haymakers on him. Try an and a bit like rahman in your style. make sure you have the attitude that you hate injustice so you are psyched up and will take jax shit from this guy. Be careful through (only joshing). good luck

Re: I have to Backyard spar this....any tips?
Thanks mate......any more tips?
-
Re: I have to Backyard spar this....any tips?
Well, for starters, he's constantly circling to his left, which means he's gonna be circling towards your power hand. Keep that in mind. Circle with him, then cut back the other way real quick and unload a haymaker, like the above poster said. Doing so should bring him within range very quickly.
He does seem to have a pretty sharp jab, but he also lunges with it a lot. Stay away, and wait for him to lunge like that, and once again, step in with a HARD body shot, or a hard shot to the head.
He seems to throw a lot of looping right hooks, so step inside those too, and once again, unload a power shot or two.
Basically, he has a good jab, and he seems strong, but his hands drop when he goes for his big shots, and he lunges far too often. Stay outside, don't engage with him. I can definately see him getting frustrated and coming in with big looping shots. When he does, slip it and unload, then back away again. Just take your time, and every time he lunges or gets frustrated, punish him.
Good Luck ;)

Re: I have to Backyard spar this....any tips?
Get to a gym and learn how to box, sparring with friends is dangerous and cause injury. youll enjoy the sweet science alot more if you learn proper technique.

Re: I have to Backyard spar this....any tips?
Keep your hands up.
I would watch that movie more than once to see how he works in the ring.
And i wouldn't be sparring in his backyard without a trainer.

I like the 'have to' in the title. Is it like when Kirk and Spock had to fight on Star Trek? :o

he drops his right severely when he throws his left....so instead of stepping back when he jabs at you step to your right while unloading a left hook over his right....then throw a right hook to the body....:) after that the uppercut w/left followed by an overhand right.....combinations should beat this guy.....

hit him in the solar plexus then......focus on the body...most people are not conditioned to take body blows......when he throws the jab....duck down...step forward..and drive your jab or straight right into his midsection......good luck......

yeah, get a quality mouth guard and keep your hands UP and elbows IN. Snap 'em and bring em back immediately. If you land one, keep throwing. He's hurt so don't let him off the hook. Keep your punches inside...short, crisp and clean. The shorter the punch, the quicker it gets there, the tougher it is to get out of the way of. Don't flail or your guard will be compromised. Keep your eyes open or you won't see what's coming.

Re: I have to Backyard spar this....any tips?
And this is one thing that hurts the sport....Honestly, I feel an backyard Wrestling, Boxing or MMA type stuff should totally be outlawed and if your kids are doing it,,,They should get flogged until they sleep!!!!
As you can tell, I dont advocate any of this kind of stuff...
The sports we are involved in are very serious and when you kids put gloves on, go out back and then knock each other's heads in, its not you that has to deal with reprocussions, its the real people involved in the business, because new restrictions and rules come into the picture...Making it harder for fighters to do what they REALLY get paid for!!
Good Luck!!!!

Re: I have to Backyard spar this....any tips?
I see where your coming from coach...maybe ur right
-
Re: I have to Backyard spar this....any tips?
coach has a good point.
The one thing I do applaud in your "sparring" sessions is that you guys are making a genuine effort to box with style and form and aren't just flailing away like idiots.
Having said that, wouldn't it make perfect sense for you guys to join a gym and really LEARN how to box? Hell, one day you might even get paid for it.
But at the very least you guys should be wearing mouth guards and head gear and sparring lightly.

Re: I have to Backyard spar this....any tips?
you seem like a decent kid, I'm glad you appear to be listening to what we say to you... so for now this thread stays... ;)
But just for the record... I'm not a... 'huge fan' of all this 'backyard boxing' nonsense ;)
-
Re: I have to Backyard spar this....any tips?
Am I the only one who noticed that he said he DOES box, and he DOES (or rather, DID) have a trainer, and he HAS sparred before?
This other kid doesn't look like he knows what he's doing at all, outside of having watched a few boxing matches and maybe look at a book or two. His form is a lot better than most street brawlers, but you can definately tell he doesnt REALLY know what he's doing.
Just stick to your basics, and this kid should be no problem, assuming you aren't lying/exaggerating about your training and experience.

Re: I have to Backyard spar this....any tips?
Some Of Us People Arnt Fortunate Enouph To Be Able To Have A Trainer So Backyard Boxing Is All We HAve And Im Deffinantly Not Gonna Stop So That The Fortunate People Will Get Paid More Thats B.S. I Dont Cair What Anyones Says Its not my Fault That i cant Get A Trainer If I Could Get One I Would Most Deffinantly Of Had One By Now But I Live 200 Miles Away From The Closest Gym So For Me To Go To It. It Would Cost Me 45 Dollers A Month For Me Maybe To Be Able To Go There Once A Month And Then Pluss The Cost Of Traveling There Its Going To Be Like 60 or More Dollers For Me To Go There Maybe Once A Month Waist Of Money For Me Cuz I Just Bought Some Title Boxing Videos And Im Training Off Those Videos I Just Started But I Should Get Better After A While

Re: I have to Backyard spar this....any tips?
Wow...What's With Capitalizing Every Single Word Of That Entire Post?
I hear you though, and sympathize. Just because you cant afford to get trained properly, doesnt mean you shouldn't be allowed to enjoy it, even in a "crude" manner.
Just realize the possible dangers (inherent in any combat sport, enhanced by the lack of proper training, protection and medical staff), and the "harm" it can do to your technique, and go for it. As long as you realize what you're doing, go nuts. (And no, I'm not being sarcastic, just in case)
I DO have to retract my previous post though, as it seems he may have overstated his training, but that other kid looks like a shlub either way, so go nuts.

I heard ya...
But here is a fact....
If this kid was a fighter in my gym, I would totally kick his ass out of the gym...
Why you ask??
Well, I teach my kids not to take this to the back yard, where in the end, this kid could end up hurting someone and getting sued...Also, he could goto jail if he is a known fighter and doing this outside of the gym...And if you dont believe me, let the first of his so called friends get seriously hurt and watch the Parents throw charges against him for asault...
He is trained in a certain combat sport then takes what skill he has out of the gym to put against his untrained friends....Yeah, that makes him look alot better....
I donot allow for any of my fighters to do this and I dont allow for unsupervised sparring sessions...This kid should get more brains and think about that...

Then you should look a little harder....
Its not about the dollars, its about the lobbyist in government that put harder sanctions against gyms insurance and such to pay for your stupidty when doing this in your backyard...One, without the proper protection, two, there is absolutely no supervision from an experienced boxer....
I talk to kids all the time about this...Think about who people like yourself effect further down the line....
If you think its a stupid statement....Then look at it like this,
I have never had a car stolen from me, but, I have to pay for the insurance hikes because of assholes who go out stealing cars...
I own 2 homes, I have never had any claims on either, one home is in Florida...Where I have had to pay for huge insurance increases because of Hurricanes...
On both homes I have to carry extra insurance for lawsuits, just in case someone slips and falls off my porch...
In the long run, are any of these my fault, no....But over time with all the claims against people and law suits, it costs the people on the outside more every year to pay for all of those lawsuits....
So look at it the way I do as a Gym owner, a Home Owner and a Parent with 3 Sons.....
Dont just look at it like I am coming down on you....
Good Luck,
Coach
PS..
Where are you from, I know alot of Coaches from around the USA...Maybe I can find something for you....

Re: I have to Backyard spar this....any tips?
Libby Montana You Check It Out For Me
But This Is The Closest Gym To Me http://www.spokaneboxing.com/fees.htm
And Just The Money To Get There Is More Then I Would Like To Spend For 1 boxing Workout A Month I Mean It would be worthless for me to waist My Money I Think thats About 100 Dollers A Month just To Have One Workout With A Qualified Trainer By My Side, And I Dont Go Looking For People To Backyard Spar But If They Ask Me To Theres No Way That Im Going To Turn Them Down And Its Not Like Im Going Out And Sparring With Little Kids Im Going To Kill With One Punch I Box Kids Who Are Bigger Then Me So That They Can Usually Take Harder Punches, But Just Because Its Not The Same Thing That You Do Doesnt Make It Differant, Only real Difference Is That You HAve To Buy All The Equipment and Pay For The Building And The Boxing Ring, We Dont Have ALot Of Money So We Box Were We Can

Re: I have to Backyard spar this....any tips?
I actually found one closer....
Tripple A Bombers Boxing
N. Powell Rd
Newman Lake, WA.
PH. #509-226-5153
Its about 140 miles from you....Thats about 1 1/2 hours I figure....If you are as serious about boxing as you say, I would really work on doing 2 days a week and maybe a day on the weekend...
Alot of what it takes to be a Boxer is sacrifice, just how much are you willing to Sacrifice to do it and do it the right way....

And I didnt say anything about you sparring little kids....Whether they are the same size or bigger than you, you all still are at the same risk....
The way you respond to me is, I hope, a different way you would respond to a trainer if you ever get one....You came to us for opinions, now that we give them to you, you get defensive about it....Relax, I am not cutting you for what dreams you have, just trying to make sure that you go every route there is to make sure you try to get the proper training needed for the sport....I would feel better as a trainer that you do this before someone gets seriously hurt....
All in all, what you do is TOTALLY DIFFERENT....Never compare what you do to what I do in my Gym...Because, for one thing, I control the sparring and my fighters learn to do it the right way in a controlled environment, what you do is not even close....
But, I guess thats all the advice I can give you, whether you follow it or not is your choice....
I hope that noone gets hurt from what you all are doing and how you do it....
Good Luck,
Coach

Re: I have to Backyard spar this....any tips?
Yer...we make a genuine attempt to improve boxing skills...
until next year when i get my license i cant get to a gym so backyard sparring is the only way. Also i enjoy the respect when you outbox somone who is seen as a "toughguy". We do understand the risk. Concussions, broken noses, cuts, bruises and even more serious injuries are all risk we are willing to take.
