Who's the most popular British fighter of all time
I am a American so I don't know to much about this, I was just puzzled. When many people mention the top 20 fighters of all time there are no Brits included, so I would like to see the other side of the coin. Growing up in the 80's and going into the early 90's Frank Bruno was the first that I remember.
1. Lennox Lewis
2. Frank Bruno
3. JC
4. Ricky Hatton
5. Nas Hamed
Where do they stand in Popularity in the UK

Re: Who's the most popular British fighter of all time
Wheres Benn and Eubank
To the casual British fan - probably Benn or Eubank or Bruno

That's the question I am asking you. Where do they stand in order in your opinion. I remember never liking Lewis because of his arrogance.
-
Re: Who's the most popular British fighter of all time
Bruno and Eubank were probably my two favourites a youngster.
Also Barry Mcguigan, Alan Minter, Ken Buchanan, Nigel Benn, Lloyd honeyghan were all popular fighters.
-
Re: Who's the most popular British fighter of all time
Accepting that there is a difference between how popular they were, and how good they actually were. In the sheer joe-public popularity stakes (I am ashamed to say):
1. Henry Cooper
2. Frank Bruno
3. Barry McGuigan
People like Naseem and Eubank were very well known, but not particularly 'popular'

This is a trick question, correct???
OH, THEY HAD FAMOUS PEOPLE FROM BRITAIN????
LOL!!

Re: Who's the most popular British fighter of all time
Joe Calzaghe isn't even top 8 in the publics opinion....
Apart from is heralded win over Lacy, there ain't much else to discuss - it's not like he flew to the States and flew the flag or anything like Bruno or Naz.
1. Bruno
2. Naz
3.Hatton
4.Lennox Lewis
5.Eubank
6.Benn
7.Henry Cooper
8.McQuigan
This is a popularity ranking - not a skill ranking folks !!

Naz definitely wasnt that popular. The public despised his arrogance, and boxing fans loved him until he fell in love with his 1 punch power and became a much lesser fighter.
Eubank and Cooper are easily more popular than Lewis who was never popular, particularly due to his wanting to maintain he was fighting for Britain, Canada and Jamaica whenever each suited him.
The Hatton mania which is sweeping boxing fans and the nation would mean I would put him at Britains most popular fighter, when he fights, theres nothing like it. The early Naz days were like this but they didnt last long, hopefully Ricky can keep it going.

Re: Who's the most popular British fighter of all time
Personally I like
Lewis
Eubank
Hatton
But I think the public went for Benn , Bruno etc

Here I am trying to find out a little bit more about British boxing and I run into a jerk like you. Leave culture out of this, you are an asshole who just want's to start trouble. Please do not respond to anymore of my threads and I will bypass all of your dumb ass comments, here is an SC and stick it up your ass.

Re: Who's the most popular British fighter of all time
Post WWII: Sir 'enry over Bomber Bruno, then it might be McGuigan, he was huge in 85/86; Randy Turpin was a big celebrity post Robinson; then probably Naseem.
Regionally Buchanan was massive in Scotland, Benn in London, and today Hatton is huge in Northern England.
Lennox never really caught the imagination of the public. He was respected, but not really liked...

CC for the Lewis comment. He was a brilliant talent but his ego was just horrific, I wonder how his character was outside of the camera.

From what I have seen, he is IMO a soft spoken introvert, who is quite intelligent and witty. But people like that, do not tend to come across well in the public eye.

Re: Who's the most popular British fighter of all time
Bruno is my favourite, met him a few times at West Ham, top bloke!
Benn is quality also.
-
Re: Who's the most popular British fighter of all time
Bruno, Benn and Eubank by miles. Lennox isn't even close.
Nigel Benn probably had the best fan base.
-
Re: Who's the most popular British fighter of all time
Benn was the most popular.
So much glitz, glamour and excitement whenever Benn fought. The legend of ITV boxing.

Great nights of boxing with Benn, Collins, Eubank, Watson, an amazing array of British talent at that time. As I have said in another thread this was the time I realised how good this sport is.
