Peter Declares Himself Only Real Contender At Heavyweight

There are contenders and pretenders, but knockout artist Sam Peter, is ranked in the top five by all major organizations, and is also universally recognized as the top contender. Now, Peter is on a mission. “Sam clearly illustrated that he belongs with the heavyweight elite in his match against Wladimir Klitschko last year,” said his promoter Dino Duva. “Considering the many lethargic, non-exciting televised matches recently featuring so-called champions and contenders, Sam is the best heavyweight out there to put on a great show because of his electrifying punching power.”
But now, the hard-punching powerhouse has his sites set only on meaningful matches that will ultimately unify the world heavyweight championship.
“Our mission is to have Sam fight only meaningful fights, beginning with his next bout, that put him in a position where every fight he has is the next step toward unifying the heavyweight title,” said Duva. “By 2007, the unification mission will be done and we will not be stopped.”
If that's the case...Peter needs to stop bum beating & fight even the fringe contenders.
I'd love to see Peter fight Brock, Thompson, Fields, Minto, Briggs, or most especailly...Valuev!

i like sam peter to be second best next to wlady...sam can improve...his fights are less boring then other heavyweights...he'll k.o brock...both brock and briggs would get killed by wlady...peter lasted 12 and almost took out wlady...i like peters aggression and he can punch and take a punch...brock and briggs are boring...peter and wlady are the best to watch in the heavyweights...
but right now wlady is the best out of all the heavyweights...

I agree with you one this. Peter bring excitement to the Heavyweights, I actually look forward to watching Sam Peter fight because win or lose you know he is going to bring it. the other heavyweight bore me to death , after about 3 rounds I usually tune to something else. nothing worse than watching a typical heavyweight fight. the fat bastards ! ;D

I agree partially here.
Here's why...I like Sam Peter...but he's limited as a boxer...if his power fails him...he has very little to fall back on. I think that he needs a proper trainer & he'll go far. I think that Brock vs Peter would be a good fight...& even though I don't rate Briggs...I see Briggs being a tuff fight for Peter based on Brigg's jab.
Peter did indeed do well as far as lasting against Wlad...but Wlad made him look pretty silly in the end.

:coolclick: Agreed 100% here.
Wlad is currently the best of the crop.

An Error Has Occurred!
Sorry, LK...Wacko can't repeat a karma action without waiting 24 hours.

Re: Sam Peter Declares Himself Only Real Contender At Heavyweight
We were reading a similiar thread like this a couple of weeks ago about Calvin Brock saying the same thing, I hope one can take over the division

Re: Sam Peter Declares Himself Only Real Contender At Heavyweight
Peter thinks he's the only real contender. I could agree with that. Thing is, that a contender is all he'll ever be. He won't be champion.

You are right on about the power factor, if Peter goes up against a good beard he is vulnerable , Sam is a diamond in the rough and needs some more training. As for Shannon Briggs he do have a good jab, but he fatigue quite easy and I think Peter's power would buckle Briggs fairly early if the y fought - IMO

Silly? He looked far from silly imo. He gave Wlad a tough fight, probably the toughest fight that he has come out the victor in. I mean...if it hadn't of been a do or die fight for Wlad then I think Peter wins that fight. But he needs a better corner.
As for Peter being the only exciting heavyweight contender....Lamon Brewster should have something to say about that.

Re: Sam Peter Declares Himself Only Real Contender At Heavyweight
Sam peter was schooled by Wlad... he knocked Wlad down once properly in my eyes... asides from that Wlad won virtually every mnite... 1st and second times where from balance/grappling/and shots to the back of the head.

I don't think so. Whenever Wlad got hurt by Peter, he grabbed him and turned his head. Even the boxing commission afterwards said they were proper knockdowns.

Sorry amat.
Replace "silly" with "limited" & you still get "silly" babe.
He did give Wlad a tough fight...but you saw what happened to him relying on his power.
As far as that goes...if you continously rely on power & you have another heavy in front of you that takes all of your power...you get pasted.
I acknowledge that Peter is exciting...but he is limited. No doubts.
He looks great against boxers that are easily outmuscled.

Well.....yeah. Unfortunately since I'm a real big fan of the guy. That's why he needs a new corner imo.

Nah babe...me too.
I'm big on Peter (Heh heh heh ;D ) but he really needs further work.
Your'e right...a new corner would be a gracious help.
When are you ever going to go back to amat?

Umm...I don't know if I am haha. I kind of hated that name but since I used it for everything, and since I didn't fully intend to stikc around here, I used it. I don't know maybe I'll change it later.

Re: Sam Peter Declares Himself Only Real Contender At Heavyweight
If Sam Peter beat the BOSS dude he could talk but he's not unbeaten is he? Until he beats someone thats the top of the division he can call himself a contender.
-
Re: Sam Peter Declares Himself Only Real Contender At Heavyweight
From my POV, anyone can claim to be the 'only' contender in the division, because fights between them are so rare, and each one is fighting bums to boost their record enough to become a mandatory for one of the belts. Boring, boring, boring, granted he looked fairly resilient against Wlad, and that might give him some more credibility than our friend Calvin Brock, I still don't think that there are enough contenders to make a proper judgement, and until he beats someone who is up there, then my judgement on him will be reserved, apart from the certain fact that he is a big talker and shameless self-promoter.
-
Re: Sam Peter Declares Himself Only Real Contender At Heavyweight
Calvin Brock is more of a contender then Sam Peter
-
Re: Sam Peter Declares Himself Only Real Contender At Heavyweight
Of course Sam is only a real contender at heavyweight he'd have to starve himself for years to get down to cruiser.
DUH!
Sam is not the only real contender...people forget Lamon Brewster is without a title right now

I don't think so. He gives anybody a tough fight. Even if he should be a level above them. He fights to the level of his opponent. But I don't think he'll ever be outclassed.

Re: Sam Peter Declares Himself Only Real Contender At Heavyweight
When Samuel Peter is on stage, he is electrifying. Not a heavyweight commands such respect. He should get contenders right and left... and guess what? He will KO them all. He's young, and I think he will improve. I doubt if Klitschko wants him again and he (i.e., Wladimir) is my favorite fighter (and scholar!). ::**
-
Re: Sam Peter Declares Himself Only Real Contender At Heavyweight
If Peter could learn to set up his power punches then he could really be a force. One thing I didnt like about him against Wlad was that he was throwing one punch at a time. He was trying too hard for the KO instead of just letting it happen. If he would have set up his punches better (ie using a jab, combos, etc...) he could rule the heavies.

I def think that the boy needs to learn the definition of the word "jab"! ;D
Then...once he learns what one is...the next step is: How to throw one...not how to eat one.

Wladimir will fight him again once Sam earns the title shot (the fight with Briggs was to pass time for the winner of Brock-Timor, however the Peter-Toney winner might get intrest too). Wlad beat him fairly easy the last time despite getting knocked down 3 times.
To be a true champ Sam is going to have to get the idea that he's a new Tua or Ibeabuchi out of his head. He doesn't have TRUE power the way everyone sees it, his hands are slow, and he can't jab worth a damn. Any good boxer will outbox him

Agreed ! Like Curtis told Ibabuchie, don't try and land one punch hard , just throw lots of punches and hit the chest , arms whatever is available , then you set up the big shot. .but Ibabuchie was in great shape. I keep saying this and it redundant but it’s a huge factor and that’s the weight factor, A 5'9 - 6”0 heavyweight is not going to be able to close the distance on these tall fighters unless they loses that fat. plain and simple, poor eating habits cement your feet, and don't allow the shorter fighter to get in close enough to do the work necessary to catch these tall guys. Example : David Tua at 228 was awesome combination puncher , an opponent could not hide. but David Tua at 256 is an easy opponent because he is reduced to just one punch at a time , he has to reset every time he throws a punch because his weight distribution is off. Also he slowed down by the extra weight , which does not allow him to close in .
