Erik Morales focused on conditioning.
Promoter Arum isn't taking any chances anymore when it comes to his star fighters trying to make weight.
Morales
He vowed not to after Jose Luis Castillo missed making 135 pounds, resulting in the shocking cancellation of his rubber match with Diego Corrales the day before they were supposed to meet June 3.
Former three-division champ Erik Morales (48-4, 34 KOs), Arum's biggest attraction, has been struggling to make 130 pounds in recent fights.
But Arum has taken steps to make sure that there will be no issues with Morales' weight as he heads into an HBO PPV rubber match with Pacquiao on Nov. 18, assuming Pacquiao defeats Larios on Saturday.
"I met with Erik and his wife and I told him, 'No more messing around,'" Arum said. "We brought in a nutritionist and flew everyone to Los Angeles to meet last week to go over a program that will allow Erik to make the weight safely and to make the weight so he can be strong for the fight."
After going over the program details, Arum said that Morales was "blown away."
Arum said that he was going to rent Morales a home in Los Angeles at Top Rank's expense, and that Morales would work with the conditioner and nutritionist through mid-September before going to Mexico for training camp. One of the conditioners will accompany Morales to Mexico, Arum said.
"The conditioning coach will be with Erik every step of the way," Arum said. "When he goes to Mexico, we want him under 140 pounds. When we bring him to Las Vegas for the fight, we want him right around 130 pounds so he will have no problem making weight. No more nonsense. We have a professional group around him now making sure things are right. Erik was not only receptive to this, he was ecstatic.
"Not only do we believe this program will allow him to make weight safely, but it will help in the fight. His real downfall in recent fights has been that he hasn't been able to fight at a full pace for 12 rounds. This will take care of that. Erik believes this program will extend his career at least two years."

Very Cool, ! The two D's Dedication, Determination, that’s what you like to see in a fighter! A fighter willing to sacrifice to get himself in the best possible condition.. Heavyweights take note you fat bastards! ;D

Re: Erik Morales focused on conditioning.
I think EM needs this,if he kills himself to make the weight,he will lose. Hopefully this gives him a chance.

Re: Erik Morales focused on conditioning.
Conditioning is good, but you can still get caught on the chin and at that point running 50 miles doesn't matter very much.

True. If you get hit with the right punch, your brain short circuit , and nothing you can do, However being in pest possible shape helps minimize the chances of that happening . Conditioned fighters are more elusive and have a heightened sense of awareness, Fatigue is a leading cause of fighters staying down and not getting back up. You can be the toughest S.O.B. in the world but if your fatigued you will cower .

Not if your Erik Morales, if he is conditioned to go a full 12 rounds at a high pace, he has a good chance to win this fight I think. His chin is amazing, I don't think he can be hurt by one punch from Pac, so running 50 miles really will matter for this fight, but he needs to pull off a miracle imo, in terms of getting himself back into shape.

Re: Erik Morales focused on conditioning.
I give Morales a great chance at winning this fight. He's beat Pac before and i see no reason he can't do it again if he's in top shape.
-
Re: Erik Morales focused on conditioning.
They said the same thing about Larios' conditioning and unbeatable stamina but Pacman outlasted him. And, are we sure that Morales' loss was due to his difficulty in losing weight? He did buckle to his knees on the 1st Barrera fight, isn't it really his natural weakness? Just asking.
-
Re: Erik Morales focused on conditioning.
I wonder how much gas he has left, I hope he can give us one more great battle.
-
Re: Erik Morales focused on conditioning.
Being a massive EM fan,I realllllllllllllllllllly want him to win but I am also a realist and I think he needs some tune ups and he needs to make this fight at a catch weight. He has/is not doing either and combined with Pac's devestating form,I feel it will be a repeat of the second fight. Has anyone seen EM recently,I saw an interview on thin Pinoy site and he looked at least 145 pounds, maybe more!! Like Rob De Niro in Raging Bull, when he puts on weight!
-
Re: Erik Morales focused on conditioning.
if theres another weight contraversy for BOB ARUM once again then he'll be known as the Jenny Craig of Boxing for years to come.

Morales doesn't fight an elusive style imo

your body may be in the best condition and you feel fresh as ever but if your mind fails you
you wont have a chance against pac
its the mind that EM needs to condition
he may say he doesnt fear pacs punches cuz he took it well in the 1st fight
and he may also say that pac was in better condition on that fight (1st)
but somewhere in his head says its really painful and he should cover and run
that will affect him on the 3rd fight fo sho
remember you cant beat your opponent when your afraid of him
its all about intimidation and confidence
he needs to give that 'there will be no more tomorrow' mentality if he wants to beat pac
i believe he is mentally capable of winning that psychowar inside the ring

Hes done it before but since then he lost twice on th etrot . It looks as though his best days are behind him .
If the boot were on the foot ie , Morales in his prime and Pac at his worst , it wouldnt last 3 rounds but im sure a washed up Morales can still last 12 with Pac . He was slightly past his best when he outboxed Pac the 1st time so if Pac stands off abit like he did against Larios at the weekend , this gives Erik a better chance . Pacs tactics have to be to pressure Erik and make him use those ageing legs . Inteligent aggression , with a high workrate will do the job again but if he tries to box Erik is by far the classier fighter and will skool him again .
Its a toss up

Re: Erik Morales focused on conditioning.
I've always said here that I think the fight won't happen, and I still have this nagging feeling that it won't, no matter what the Morales camp keep on saying. I've being wrong few times and probably wrong again this time but I just can't help feeling so. If indeed Morales decides to go on with the fight, I think he is ready for retirement, what with all the news about his being involved in his own boxing promotion activities - ready for a new career, perhaps?

He looked smaller before the Raheem press conference when he was very much overweight, if he looked like he barely made 135 for that fight how is he going to make 130 for this fight?

Agreed. I myself have a sneaky suspicion that this might be Erik's last big effort & a big retirement plan. Mortified to think that way...but I do.

Re: Erik Morales focused on conditioning.
I love both PAC and Morales, and I picked PAC to win last time out....but I am in no way going to rule out Morales in this rematch. If he can get the preparation just right and come in feeling strong and with the correct mindset then it can be a very competitive fight...
I have my doubts though and to be honest would rather sit on the fence for a while until we get the build up. Im picking noone at this stage...
Morales does look a bit chubby in that photo, but so does Hatton between fights....he isnt going to come into the ring looking like that though!! ;D

Re: Erik Morales focused on conditioning.
I just think Pac is getting better and better and EM is going downhill. His conditioning, his boxing skills etc etc. I don't think he has it in him to go to war with Pac anymore,I mean prime for prime,EM would beat him hands down but that is not the case anymore :'( I couldn't stand seeing my fave boxer getting beaten up again so I hope he is EXTRA motivated for this. PLus he is back with his father so that should help.
Em needs to nail the conditioning and the tactics,GO TO PACS BODY!! That would slow him down and remember,he has lost by stoppage to bodyshots before!EM also needs to wear the Reyes gloves,if he can shake Pac with the pillows.he can hurt with him with the smaller gloves!!

Go to PACS BODY Pacmans body is harder than your head dude thats a stupid thing to do and yeah they should use the smaller gloves coz pacmans punch is sweeter on it better ask your "FAVE BOXER" if its true or not!!! O0
