People who like MMA...
Give me one reason why I should care about it.
I am not trying to deliberately diss it but I find it totally lacking in entertainment, perhaps everyone else might be cool with kicking, HORRIBLE punching which they call "striking", and grappling which basically ammounts to rolling around on the ground.
Everyone says it's better than boxing, well if it's so much better why hasn't it taken over? You never see it on ESPN, it doesn't get coverage in newspapers, I couldn't name 5 Pride, UFC, MMA fighters if my life depended on it.
So WHY is it good?
Do the match ups SEEM more fair? Because it might be the case now but corruption spreads like a motherfucker and it'll hit MMA soon enough.
Are there more 'stars' in those fighting groups?
Or are you guys basically fed up with PPV?
I don't like PPV, I don't buy them unless I REALLY want to see the fight live, I have like 10 HBO's they replay the fights all the time.

Re: People who like MMA...
In comparable time slots, the UFC draws better ratings than boxing. It is only not covered more because the sports media has had a 100 year traidition of covering boxing and the UFC did really not begin to explode juntil this past February.
Saying that grappling in professional MMA "amounts to rolling around on the ground" is like saying pro boxing "amunts to two bar flies trading haymakers."
BTW, I love both sports.
-
Re: People who like MMA...
the reason why it hasnt taken over boxing is because its only been around for about 12/13 years. boxing has been around for over a century!
it lacks entertainment??? LMAO!!!!!
how could you say horrible punching? they could still knock someone out. in mma you cannot do PURE BOXING PUNCHES COS YOU'LL GET KICKED IN THE HEAD OR TAKEN DOWN. the guard is different.
crocop was an amatuer, his record - 40-5 (31 inside) he has wicked strikes. when francois botha went to mma, he got knocked the f*** out! in mma you jus punch, if its effective for you then cool. look at wanderlei's punches or fedors, they different to pure boxing style, but they knock you out!
I believe wanderlei will whoop any boxer in a stand up fight. just becasue their guard is different or the way they punch isnt textbook boxing, doesnt mean they suck!
btw i always by ppv if i wanna watch the fight.
i think PRIDE FC is on ppv but they dont show it in uk, they show it in 75 other countries, lol!
THINK ABOUT THIS.- pride fc has no media coverage in uk and no papers mention it. it doesnt come on tv. doesnt come on the ppv in uk. BUT STILL ALOT OF PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT IT THROUGH JUST THE INTERNET. NOW IF IT HAD ALL THE MEDIA COVERAGE AND STUFF IT WILL GO THROUGH THE ROOF MAN!.
the boxing gym i train at, there are a few ppl who know the champ from japan (pride fc - fedor and the champ in ufc , tim sylvia) now they could only know all this from the internet or maybe bravo (ufc comes on it - tv channel)
how popular do you think it would be if it had all the paper coverage and media stuff, came on the news regualary (hopefully sport news :) )
the reason why people are turning to mma is because boxing is lacking big fights :(
the last fight i was lookin g foreward to like mad apart from the b-hop n tarver was the lacy ncalzaghe bout, it was in the papers everyday and mentioned all the time on the news etc.
i think in boxing everyone should just fight.
ricky hatton with cotto winner faces mayweather
mayweather with margarito,
people also wanna see what happens with toney v wlad, let em fight.
in the last pride fc event, over 80 thousand people went to watch the fights. most of the fights were big, like superfights. WAIT TILL THE NEXT EVENT.
ALSO PRIDE IS COMING TO AMERICA IN OCTOBER 21ST, beware guys ;)
dont get me wrong, i am a solid solid boxing fan, but i am also a solid mma fan, im jus sticking up for one.

Re: People who like MMA...
A reason to like it it the diversity in styles and style matchups and thr art in itself of mixed martial arts in a freestyle battle. There's not like a Floyd Mayweather who can make a mistake and could lose a round and then still win the fight if he got buzzed. In MMA even if you're the best one armbar or submission or mistake and its over for you no matter how good you are. Well unless you're Rampage Jackson where if someone armbars you, you just pick them up and slam them head first into the matt. Unfortunately the kicks of Vanderlei got to him first..he had him at the end of the first round though, 30 seconds more and Jackson is the winner, but then again its a prime example of MMA.

I dont like MMA and to it holds no real interest for me. If others want to like it then thats fair enough, Ive no bitterness about it. For some reason boxing holds more appeal to me and im sure it always will over all other sports. Its in ze blood....

:coolclick: miles.
Totally agree.
Boxing will always hold more of my interest because of the talent pool, the history, the skill level, & the beauty of it all.
There are a lot of boxers that are just beautiful to watch at work...that may sound corny...but to me...it's not.
Floyd, Leonard, Oscar, Hopkins, Hagler, all those guys are just so tuned in to the finess of boxing that it's amazing just to watch them work. To set out a plan, carry it to it's fruition, & execute it with style & accuracy just garners my respect like nothing else on the planet.
I just can't say that MMA does that. Actual Martial Arts is a different story...the craft & science that is true martial arts hooks me the same way that boxing does...but not Pride Fighting, UFC, or MMA sports...nothing there for me.
That's all. I have no respect for it...& won't.

Re: People who like MMA...
From what I saw of Wanderlei or whatever his name is, he can't punch a lick! Yeah he knocked the guy out but you're telling me that Wanderlei could KO a boxer in a boxing match? Not with those punches bro!
Yeah Frans Botha and Ray Mercer got beat up because they are boxers, and Ray got put in with a KICKER poor guy.
There are people that kick in fights....they are called GIRLS

:coolclick: What I consider to be the true martial arts such as Kung fu, Wushu, the Shaolin style, Aikijujutsu, Aikido, & my favorite of all Ninjutsu have entrigued me for years...MMA has nothing on that.

Re: People who like MMA...
Again...let me state...no disrespect to those that love MMA...I just like talking shat & playing around...it's all in fun...but seriously...MMA got a huge boost/boom when Charter telecable starting hooking up basic cable & the PPV shots in most trailer parks accross the United States. ;D
I'm sorry bitches...but that is pretty damned humerous...if to no one else...but me. ;D

...and I aint be a smart ass to ya...but it just does nothing for me. NOTHING.
I just don't favor the fighters...to rough around the edges & just to unchecked brutality & way to sloppy...no finess or beauty in that.

Re: People who like MMA...
UFC and Pride are like toughman competitions...it's for people with no true skill at punching or defense but they can just run at each other and try to take advantage of all the numerous flaws they have.
Punching a guy while on the ground?....now that's gay

:coolclick:'s to Wacko and Lyle
Boxing IMO is a whole different ballgame Pride, UFC, MMA, K1 and all that other stuff....
Kicking is just not something that computes on my radar...I dont like to see grown men trying to kick each other. It just isnt my cup of tea. Watching two men on the ground writhing and squirming and grunting....it just doesnt do it for me either. :-\ ;D

Re: People who like MMA...
God Damn right Miles! cc back
I like my beer cold, my tv loud and my kicking in fights NON EXISTANT!
-
Re: People who like MMA...
lol wacko. funny guy.
i never once said that wanderlei will ko a boxer in a boxing match but he can ko them with a punch. he has the power.
SECRETLY YOU ALL KNOW MMA IS MORE EXCITING, IT GETS UR BLOOD BOILING, BUT YOU CANT ADMIT IT COS IT WILL DOWN BOXING! :)
so your stating crocop has no skill or defence, hmmm, now your taking the piss :)
Well if you say there is no skill in pride fc, if you put in a boxer with a mma striker, all in strikes, no grappling, the boxer will win right? cos the pride fc fighter will wade in throwing punch and kick after the other, and then the boxer will throw a jab and ko the no holds barred warrior? NOT RRRREALLY. the boxer will be made to look stupid...lmao! even if hasim rahman trades with silva or any other heavy, they will still get ktfo...its true!
MMA IS THEEEEE ULTIMATE SPORT ;D ;D ;D THE TOTAL PACKAGE

Re: People who like MMA...
Comparing boxing and striking is like comparing throwing a football and throwing a baseball. Same basic concept but totally different. Why is this such a hard concept to grasp. To answer Lyle's topic question here is why I enjoy watching MMA events.
1. I like the variety of skill sets involved. I will agree that it is more difficult to become a great boxer than mma fighter, but I like how the fighters must train in a variety of disciplines and then see how it plays out in the ring. Most of these guys were world class competitors in one thing or another (kickboxing, muaythai, wrestling, judo, BJJ) before they came to MMA
2. I train in submission grappling, so where lyle sees two men grunting and rolling I see a sweet science and appreciate the difficulty in it.
3. I think that MMA org put on better cards. A mma ppv is cheaper and you see more fights, and better fights. Obviously Pride and UFC don't pit their fighters against one another but if there is a big fight to be made in one company or the other it happens. No haggling over paychecks or alphabets. I remeber when an HBO ppv would have 3-5 fights and you were interested in at least 2-3. That never happens anymore. Rarely do you even get to see more than one fight.
4. Lastly where wacko and lyle see sloppy amaturism, I see some of the top athletes in the world using technical skills to savagely beat the crap out each other. You rarely see an out of shape or lackluster perfromance from MMA fighters. It doesn't matter if it is a championship fight or some no body these guys usually fight like their lives depend on it.

Re: People who like MMA...
To those saying MMA isnt their cup of tea, fair enough..thts all good. But to try and hint those guys who fight for organisations such as Pride FC are sloppy and bla bla is utter crap. These guys pack in 8hrs a day 6days a week and prob train just as hard as boxers, its a living for them, its an art, a science, just like boxing is. When i first started watching boxing i was like WTF?!?! Once i began to understand the technicalities of it i began to appreciate it more and enjoy it more. To say two guys rolling around on the floor trying to submit each other is wack etc is equivalent of a noob watching boxing and saying two guys who cant simply KO each other..Grappling is a science also and once u understand the technicalities its a lot more interesting to watch.
To those saying kicking etc is girly, im sure the many ppl who train in such a sport and understand the science of it will be quick to disprove such ignorant comments.
With regards to striking in MMA, you cant have the stance of a boxer and keep ur hands up high for fear of takedowns and inability to defend low leg kicks...simple as that, its not the same as boxing...but u cant knock some of them guys boxing, and its great to see MMA fighters going to train with Pro Boxers in order to sharpen up their striking skills and we should respect that.
I think many ppl are only familiar with UFC and its stoopid redkneck fan base and paint the entire sport of MMA with the same brush. Look into organisations such as Pride FC where the fans also understand and respect the technicalities of the sport creating that enjoyable atmosphere.
So basically, If you dont like MMA fair enough, but to go knock these fighters who train hard and are amazing to watch is silly, im sure most of u lot who love boxing would sit back and think WTF if some ignorant person came here saying boxing is just two guys who just swing and cant even KO each other easilyand bla bla bla and it isnt to their liking so F boxing and F its supporters.

Re: People who like MMA...
"kicking is for girls"????
how about you punch me wherever you'd like as hard as you can
and then when i get up i kick you as hard as i can and see if you even get up
basically, why people such as myself like MMA is because it is more real
boxing isn't real, it never will be in a real life situation fight
but hell no, i'm not disrespecting boxing, just stating the facts
-
Re: People who like MMA...
i dont really think its better than boxing or boxing better than MMA but if you like seing variety in fighting styles clash then MMa is good for you. you know, liking MMA doesnt mean you have to dislike boxing or vice versa, you can be a fan of both. ;)
-
Re: People who like MMA...
One thing is for sure, in each other's elements a boxer could beat an MMA'er and an MMA'er could beat a boxer.

Re: People who like MMA...
When Lyle posts that bitter angry narrow minded garbage, why doesn't anyone address it? I honestly have a hard time taking him seriously when he posts about, well pretty much anything lol. My only guess is that you're all used to it :)
As far as MMA goes, I fell in love with it before I did boxing so it'd be harder for me to draw the same conclusion many here do. But despite finding it first, it doesn't quite compare to boxing for me personally. Maybe because the sport of boxing is more artistic, the amount of money on the line, all the history that comes with the sport. Whatever it is, thats just my opinion and Lyle thats the key word here, opinion. If you think leg kicking is silly, thats you're bad for being apathetic to what a leg kick can really do. I just ordered a Pride FC ppv this weekend, and the main event entailed Mirko Crocop knocking out Hideko Yoshida with a kick to his leg, forcing him to be carried out of the ring as he couldn't walk after receiving just a few of those strikes. Don't be consciously apathetic torward something, then post about it as if you know whats up. I'm like anyone else, I don't care to see ground fighting (except Fedor's ground and pound). But if you devoted just a little bit of time to actually do it yourself, you'd think a little different.
I believe Wacko when he says that yes I've seen MMA, and it's not my cup of tea. No big deal, just an opinion and unlike some people (poor Lyle) he didn't make up his mind before seeing the big picture.

Put a boxer in MMA they'll get tapped out
Put a MMAist in a boxing ring they'll get Kayod.
Its pretty simple.

I tend to agree. I like boxing, MMA and all combat related sports. I think the biggest thing MMA did was to show the public that some of these so called "masters" with their death touch, etc., got their a** kicked when involved in a real fight.

Exactly.
Both Gomi (Pride FC) and Oscar De Le Hoya were on Best Damn Sports show and Gomi said if they was in boxing fight, Oscar would beat him with one hand tied behind his back, but in MMA Gomi would take out Oscar. Simple as that.

Re: People who like MMA...
I understand that in their sport the MMA people would more than likely beat boxers....that is not the point.
Yes fighting the way they do looks sloppy as shit...let's combine wrestling with kick boxing....oh that'll be fantastic.
I know people like MMA, I'm not trying to sway their view or anything I just want to know legit reasons WHY
-It's more realistic...yeah fine whatever if I get in a bar fight I'm going to go Jean Claude Van Dam on someone....no I'll punch them and watch out for a beer bottle retaliation.

I think an mma'er would win in the cage, a boxer in the ring. In a bar brawl I'll take the boxer because they're usually stand-up contests in a crowded place.

MMA'ers also compete in a ring (Pride FC, IFL etc). If u meant boxing rules/match then aye a boxer would win.
Bar Brawl? they may usually be standup but unlike both MMA and Boxing, their are NO RULES AT ALL.

Re: People who like MMA...
Yes alot of what anti MMA people post is ignorant and trying to tell them the truth or other wise is a losing battle..I will agree with some now that its on TV more main stream you get alot of overzealous yahoos that think they know an armbar a leglock,Triangle choke etc cause they see it on TV.. I train in MMA and anyone that does will tell you there are countless drills and techniques that we work on to know when to put one on(from the guard the mount etc.) then you do isolation drills working on that specific technique....PEOPLE GRAPPLING IS A GODAMN ART AS WELL AS A SCIENCE AND A BEAUTIFUL ONE AT THAT!!!!! aLSO I cant stand the ones that walk around with the Tapout Tshirts and all the Accessories but dont even know what a kimura is for crissakes...I feel like if you are gonna represent it like that you better be able to back it up or deal with the consequense when someone calls you on it
