Calzaghe:I have 3 fights left.
Joe Calzaghe was set to face Glenn Johnson at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium on Saturday, but due to a hand injury in training, Calzaghe was forced off the card.
In a recent interview with the Western Mail, Calzaghe was upset at not being able to be part of boxing in this weekend's massive event. Calzage tells the Western Mail: "Obviously I'm very disappointed to be missing out. I'm a bit gutted to be completely honest. This is the biggest boxing bill ever in Wales, if not in the whole UK, so I would love to be able to get out there.'
Calzaghe also told the Western Mail his hand is getting better, but he is thinking of retirement. "The hand's getting better,
but it wasn't right and I don't want to get in the ring not feeling 100 per cent, I'd be mad to do that. At this stage of my career I've got three fights left, maybe four if it's a big enough pay day for me.
Calzaghe added: "I want to go out in a blaze of glory, with all guns blazing as they say, that's how I want to be remembered. You have to know when to get out of this game. You don't want to go that fight too far if you can help it. It's not a matter of injuries or whatever, I could have 40 more fights left in me, but I'm choosing to go after three more."

Re: Calzaghe:I have 3 fights left.
Three more fights for Joe? Well, if thats the case, he could either look for the big money fights, or solidfy his hold on the Super MWD. Right now there are young hungry, and exciting prospects waiting to showcase their skills. Allan Green of teh USA is one of them, 20-0 (14 KO). Let's not forget Librado Andrade with his 23-0 (17KO) record. And of course there's Mikkel Kessler.
Obviously these guys arent the best payday out there for Joe. But, from the point of view of someone who truly loves boxing, I just hope that Joe fights at least one of these guys, to show whether he truly deserves to be remembered as one of the best Super Middleweights in recent memory.

Re: Calzaghe:I have 3 fights left.
I doubt Green is ready for him.
Perhaps Jermain Taylor??? Chad Dawson???

I doub't Green is ready too. And both Taylor and Dawson would be bigger money fights.
What I'm trying to say is that its up to Joe as to how he wants to go out. Does he want to look for the big money fights and probably change weight class, or does he stay put and take on all the opposition, in hopes of further proving his dominance in the Super Middleweights
-
Re: Calzaghe:I have 3 fights left.
Dawson can do 168...so can Taylor...it's just a matter of will they
-
Re: Calzaghe:I have 3 fights left.
Taylor would get the living sh*t kicked out of him.
-
Re: Calzaghe:I have 3 fights left.
If he only has 3 or 4 left in him hopefully he will target the big names. Kessler at supermiddle, Clinton Woods and Johnsonn at light heavy, Taylor or Wright if they move up, Hopkins or Roy Jones if one of them wants to stage a mega fight, and a domestic showdown with Carl Froch.
I can't see the point in him fighting anybody outside of that lot, but knowing how hard it is to arrange a big fight matchup he will be lucky to get 1 maybe 2 of the above at best :-\
Here's hoping anyway.
Hopkins, Taylor, Kessler, Woods,
Now THAT would be the way to go!

Re: Calzaghe:I have 3 fights left.
INO there are only three fighters that have a good chance at beating Calzaghe & one that would definately beat him and they are Bernard "the executioner" Hopkins at lightheavyweight, Ronald "Winky" Wright or Jermain "Bad Intentions" Taylor at SMW

No, No and No.
Calzaghe whips all of em
-
Re: Calzaghe:I have 3 fights left.
Definitely, the 3 fights will be Winky Wright, then the winner of Glen Johnson / Clinton Woods, and then Jermain "Bad Decision" Taylor ;D. BTW, I like Jermain, I just thought that nickname was funny as hell.
-
Re: Calzaghe:I have 3 fights left.
Calzaghe has had a long hard career, his hand is going, his back is in trouble and home life is not to special...
If I was him I would have an easy warm fight in front of a home crowd at the Millennium Stadium, then sit back and only fight again if I was guaranteed £3 Million.
In other words RJJ and maybe Hopkins. ;)
-
Re: Calzaghe:I have 3 fights left.
three more fights!?!? that is disappointing. hopefully he changes his mind
-
Re: Calzaghe:I have 3 fights left.
1) Winky
2) Kessler
3) Domestic battle with Carl Froch

Agree with the first two, although it could well be Taylor or Winky, depending which one brings the more money in. Then a spring fight against the winner of Beyer/ Kessler.
As for a fight with Carl Froch, I can't imagine that being pulled off as it just doesn't bring the big bucks in or greatly enhance his reputation, so it doesn't make sense from his side, however good it would look for Froch. Personally, I think the natural third fight, if he holds off the first two would be to become a two-weight champ and try to beat the winner of Woods/Johnson at light-heavy.
All I hope is that Calzaghe does make all three really big name fights, and ignores the smaller fights that are just record padders.
-
Re: Calzaghe:I have 3 fights left.
Calzaghe? I think he'd be just fine living off the Jeff Lacy win for the rest of his career. He could fight all those guys but will he?

:coolclick: Hate to jump on the bus...but that's how I'd like to see it play out.
Let Hopkins retire...but if Calzaghe calls & offers the cash...he'd do it...& I can see the incentive for Calzaghe. He was getting set to face Tarver & Hopkins destroyed him...now Calzaghe could want a piece of Tarver & that would sell an assload of tickets & the PPV gate would be massive also.

Good points & I agree...he could retire today with ruined hands & I would be satisfied.
Personally...I think that everyone that dislikes Calzaghe needs to take a step back & give him a shot again.
Go buy a career disc set or videos or something...the man's got some great fights under his belt & he always shows out.

RIGHT....dude Taylor has just finished 3 fights with the "BEST BOXERS" pound for pound and Calzaghe would totally destroy him?
Joe is bigger yes but Taylor is a good boxer he'd give Joe a tougher time than Lacy

I'm not sure that I'd say destroyed...but he'd get his ass handed to him by Calzaghe...the thing is...Calzaghe would be a bit bigger & is more effective with his jab than Taylor.
Calzaghe would teach Taylor quite a few things...the first being the common unconscious phrase uttered by most knockout victims as they awaken from their brief fist enduced nap : "Could you please pass me the biscuits & gravey grandma" as he lie on his back counting light bulbs. ;D

Re: Calzaghe:I have 3 fights left.
Nah...you might think Joe is at the top of his game...well so was Hopkins and so was Wright....Taylor is a game fighter and I think he can go the distance with anyone from 154-175

Hopkins won the first fight.
Taylor won the second one.
Taylor lost to Wright.
Taylor got 2 decisions that he did not deserve. He lost on punch stats & he was the bigger man going back all night against Wright.
Calzaghe & his volume & angles would be waaaaaaaaay too much for Taylor...unless ofcourse he flies his team over to London...then he's got it in the bag...& you know HBO would send the judges for Taylor. ::**

Re: Calzaghe:I have 3 fights left.
Taylor vs Calzaghe calzaghe will out land jermain and land at a higher % but lose a desion
-
Re: Calzaghe:I have 3 fights left.
I think Calzaghe would decision Taylor handily....he would befuddle Taylor with the output and angles....
Of course Joe would get caught, but he can take a punch...
Calzaghe UD...
And 3 more fights sounds just about right...but hurry up Calzaghe!! A fighter that relies on output and workrate shouldnt stay around too long at his age...
-
Re: Calzaghe:I have 3 fights left.
The more work Taylor gets with Manny the better he's going to be...Jermain is far from complete, he needs to work on managing distance between him and the other fighter.
Taylor is a good guy, a good fighter, and he's not scared to fight anyone.
That being said I have a lot of respect for Calzaghe especially after he disposed of Jeff Lacy. I think Jeff is a great fighter and I want him to go out with a bang but more than likely he won't fight ALL super fights but he'll have a few good ones.
For the record I think Taylor would do better than Kessler against Calzaghe

CC.good points, totally agree. I think the longer the injury keeps him out,the less likely it is for him to have 3 fights. You guys have mentioned Taylor,Kessler,Johnson byt what about Winky Wright? I thought that fight was a real possibility.
-
Re: Calzaghe:I have 3 fights left.
Agree, Winky would make a great fight for Joe. They are both veterans of the ring and would bring a massive amt of experience. It could be a fight they could both retire on, especially on the purse that fight could generate.
Warren would be smiling all the way to the bank as well!!!
-
Re: Calzaghe:I have 3 fights left.
I think Taylor-Calzaghe would be a great fight, i think Taylor would Joe a much better fight then people give him credit for.

CC, back Game
If Im honest I think Winky is even less of a threat than Taylor at Supermiddleweight. Calzaghe would outwork Winky and yes outland Winky. The accumulation from angles would be very telling. Winky should go no further than middleweight IMO....

Agreed. Winky needs to either stay where he is...or move the fwock down! 168 is too heavy IWO & Calzaghe would be too much. :coolclick:

Re: Calzaghe:I have 3 fights left.
I think Winky would be taking on too much too but I thought that was the reason he did not want to fight Margarito, becuse he thought he would get more from another fight, which I presumed meant JC.

What we think & want is entirely different from what Winky wants.
He said at the end of the interview after the Taylor fight that he wanted the biggest & the best out there & for them to make an offer...he's also mentioned in the past that he wanted Calzaghe...right after the Lacy loss...so I wouldn't be surprised if he fought Joe...not one bit.
-
Re: Calzaghe:I have 3 fights left.
I still give Joe no respect...He is still a champion who won't leave a lackluster division....His greatest win is over Jeff Lacey who really has nothing more than power in his resume as a fighter...Before the Lacey fight no one cared about Joe......To be remembered as a great fighter you have to have great fights and so far Joe has had none...Even a win over Johnson will not make him an all time great

True true, but I would prefer to see a Winky-JT rematch first. However,a Winky fight would be good for JC'S legacy.

Noone cared about Joe bfore lacy?
Calzaghe has beaten everyone he needed to...
Who do you recommend he beats? Erm kessler maybe, or Taylor or Johnson???
He would beat them all, and you would only ask for him to fight better competition...get real!

He can't do more than beat whoever's put in front of him, and so far he's done that with aplomb. If the fights with the american fighters don't come off, and they won't take him on, then that's that. Who knows what goes on in the negotiations between Warren and the US promoters? I do have high hopes for these last three fights though!!!

No offense...but you need your head checked.
You either don't follow 168 or you just haven't seen many of Calzaghe's fights.
Statements like this just blow my mind.
To be remembered for a great fighter you have to fight high caliber opponents (which he has) & you have to dominate your division & win convincingly (which he has).
Calzaghe has done the very thing that he intended to do...win & make a name for himself.
He's defeated plenty of game fighters & champions, all the while pretty much humiliating them in the process.

I dont know about the two of them Retiring off of that purse unless the fight happens in JC's back yard...Calzaghe is not known or popular in the US and even though Winky is american and a master Craftsman he stills dosent get his proper respect here in the US, so a US fight would be crumbs for those two

im not to sure about your grammer (sorry not taking the piss but u confused me a little bit)
im not sure if your saying all three would 'definatley' beat him, or just hopkins.. either way have a sadlick for that bullshit statment you just said..
to out nd out say he would 'definatley' beat him is just freaking crazy... if you said you believe he would beat him for such and such reason then i would respect that.. but to give calzaghe no chance at all, well thats just silly.
