Shannon Briggs says stuff
By Benny Henderson Jr www.DoghouseBoxing.com
November 11th on HBO at the Mecca of boxing Madison Square Garden in New York City, American heavyweight contender Shannon ‘The Cannon’ Briggs, 47-4-1 (41), will be set to fire off at will against the towering IBF heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko, 46-3 (41), in a scheduled twelve round clash for the Ukrainian’s IBF strap in a bout humorously described by Briggs as “the battle between the big white guy and the big black guy, Godzilla throwing down with King Kong!”
But although the down to earth challenger was amusing and quite affable at times during the interview, his outlook on this fight is of a man who is completely determined to wreak serious havoc on his opponent and earn the heavyweight hardware.
It is an opportunity that the thirty-four year old former world title challenger doesn’t want to squander.
“I have been looking forward to this chance,” Briggs told Doghouse Boxing in an exclusive interview. “This is the opportunity that I have been waiting on for a long time. When I fought Foreman I was just a kid and didn’t fully understand the magnitude of being on the top, now I fully understand what being champion means, and beating Klitschko doesn’t only change my life but it changes my kids lives and their kids lives as well, so I am going to seize this moment.”
The Brooklyn born fighter has gone on a tear sine losing out to Jameel McCline by unanimous decision in April of ’02. Since then Briggs has banged out eleven consecutive victories, knocking out every fighter who has crossed his path. His KO résumé includes victories over John Sargent (TKO 1), Abraham Okine (TKO 3), Ray Mercer (KO 7) and one of
the most vicious knockouts in recent memory other than Allan Green versus Jaidon Codrington when Briggs put a solid hurting on Dicky Ryan that ended with a sadistic right hand that had the ‘Raging Bull’ looking lifeless and limp on the canvas for several minutes.
Even with the success Briggs still received a tongue lashing from many members of the media for the quality of his opposition.
“We have been taking every fight that we could take to stay busy,” explained Briggs’ manager Scott Hirsch. “And we weren’t just going to wait around. His opponents have been tough fighters and since Shannon and I hooked up a year ago, his overall opponents’ records have been 173-21, and now with this big one here Shannon will be at his best.”
Briggs has taken the praise along with the criticism from the media like a trooper.
“It is what it is,” said the unflappable Briggs. “At one time it was great, I was with Teddy Atlas and the media had good things to say, as soon as we parted ways some of the punk a** writers were scared of Atlas so Briggs became the devil of boxing, he had no heart no chin, no stamina, it was like I had a bull’s eye on my head. Especially after the Wilson loss, everybody dished on me, but that taught me a few things, sometimes you just get kicked on, but one thing Shannon never pulled out of fights. I fought McCline for the money, I had no sparring and I ran out of gas, and I became a target for the press, but man…everything that happened to me in the past has gotten me where I am today, and like I said I am going to seize this moment, but I don't hate Teddy or the press, I got nothing but love for everyone, there's too much hate in this world.”
In search of heavyweight gold Team Briggs has added on the former super featherweight contender Jeff Mayweather to their team.
“I still have to give Miltan Lacroix credit for what he done for me, but Jeff is the man,” said Briggs of the newest member of Team Cannon. “He has taken a heavyweight fighter and turned him into a welterweight, Jeff was a great add to the team.”
Mayweather revealed that the feelings are mutual.
“The chemistry has been great, Shannon has an outgoing personality, and although we are a team we respect each other as men, so it isn’t just a fighter-trainer relationship,” said Mayweather. “It is a great situation, Shannon is one of the most talented big men I know, he has fast hands and can move well, he has learned to relax and has a good defense.”
Briggs will be facing one of the premier heavyweights in the game in Wladimir Klitschko, a fighter only a fool would take lightly. And with the two heavy-handed heavyweights racking up eighty-two knockouts between them it would appear that somebody is going to see say goodnight.“
I can’t see this one going the distance,” said Mayweather. “Shannon is faster and can take a better punch than Klitschko. Wladimir doesn’t like to get roughed up, and he doesn’t want this to be an all out war, but Shannon is in shape and Shannon works harder than I have seen any other heavyweight work. I see a big difference in Shannon.”
Hirsch concurs with Mayweather’s sentiment.
“You will see Shannon at his career best on November 11th, he has been working towards this night for the last four and half years,” said Hirsch. “Coming off heavyweight bores like Brock vs. Ibragimov, Rahman vs. Toney and Ruiz vs. everyone, this fight can reignite the heavyweight division. You'll see fireworks; it will be exciting while it lasts.”
The fighter himself feels the same way about this match-up.
“I am ready for this fight, we both are heavy punchers, I have a lot of KO’s and Wladimir has a lot of KO’s, so this is going to be a great fight, Godzilla versus King Kong, a big white guy and a big black guy,” laughed Briggs. “I am not only bringing the belt back to America but just as Tyson, Bowe, Eddie Muhammad and Judah, I am bringing it back to Brownsville, back to the fans. I love my fans man. And come November 11th Wladimir Klitschko and Emanuel Steward are going to be blaming Benny for hooking me and Jeff up together, because we are going to go in there to kick a** and piss a bunch of people off. This my dream and I will not give up on it, and I haven’t given up on it, even after the Wilson fight, I never lost the dream. I knew that someday I'd be heavyweight champion of the world and I'm still living the American Dream, and I am not just fighting for myself, this is for all the people I grew up with in Brooklyn and all the hard working people across America, we are going to kick a** and bring it back home!”

Re: Blah blah blah Shannon Briggs says stuff (from Maxboxing)
...I have a feeling the radioactive fire breath of Godzilla will be too much for the dreadlocked warrior King Kong (and this is not a racist comment by any means, Shannon said "Big white guy vs Big Black guy, it's like Godzilla throwing down with King Kong")
-
Re: Blah blah blah Shannon Briggs says stuff (from Maxboxing)
I think I am buying into the hype. I think Briggs has a good chance. Everything I have read has talked about how fast his hands are, if they are that fast then he has a good chance of getting in a few solid shots on Wlad's chin. I am going with Briggs stopping him in the middle rounds.
-
Re: Blah blah blah Shannon Briggs says stuff (from Maxboxing)
you go right ahead...I'm liking Briggs shot to at least put on a good showing but make no doubt about it his style is ALL WRONG to beat Wlad.
1. Chin
2. Power
3. Stamina
Briggs hasn't taken a TRUE power punch since Lewis whipped him
Briggs hasn't had to show his power vs anyone good recently
Briggs last weighed in at 270...not good for his stamina
Wlad is fighting Briggs to let everyone in the heavyweight division see what a dominating explosive force he is...does Rahman show that skill? Does Toney have that Power? Does Brock have such a good technique? Does Sam Peter throw punches that accurate? Does Valuev bring ANYTHING to the table?
-
Re: Blah blah blah Shannon Briggs says stuff (from Maxboxing)
I think Briggs will make Wlad fight smart and I think it'll be more of a Wlad-McCline fight than anything else but the KO will come to Wlad because Shannon will get tired.

Wlad McCline was a great fight...I'd love to see Briggs on his ass after about the 4th round.
LOVE IT!!!

Re: Blah blah blah Shannon Briggs says stuff (from Maxboxing)
Briggs gets carried out after the 2nd round
-
Re: Blah blah blah Shannon Briggs says stuff (from Maxboxing)
I think it will really be like the McCline or Mercer fights because in all honesty I think Shannon is afraid of big punchers, he's the Ken Norton of today's heavyweights.
The problems Lewis had with Briggs were due to not establishing a good quick jab, he got countered off of it and the left hook hurt him a couple times. If anyone establishes the jab it's Wlad and since the Sanders and Brewster debacles he keeps his right hand close to his chin til he's damn sure he's controling with that jab. Sure not using the right limits him but being able to hook so quick off the jab gives him another punch to work with
Also the Lewis fight was when Shannon was 220 something and in his absolute PRIME...I highly doubt we see THAT Shannon in the ring with Wlad

Dick fuck&^ing Ryan.???LMFAO! what a fucking joke ! If you can't beat a guy named Dick Ryan who you gonna beat? LMFAO ;D

Re: Blah blah blah Shannon Briggs says stuff (from Maxboxing)
...I haven't seen many of Briggs' recent fights but I saw the one vs Abraham Okine...which leads me to ask the question SO WHY IF YOU'RE FROM AFRICA AND YOU'RE A HEAVYWEIGHT YOU'RE ALWAYS THE NEXT IKE IBEABUCHI

Re: Blah blah blah Shannon Briggs says stuff (from Maxboxing)
All I know is Briggs is a fool if he comes in near 270. Wlad will just circle for a few rounds, jump on his neck, ride him, tire him out and KO him. Briggs is every bit as talented as Wlad, more so I think. I hope he drops the weight and comes goes right after Wlad, thats his best chance to win. Screwin round and tryin to box Wlad could get him beaten. Both have pretty bad chins, and both hit hard, so someone is gettin KO'd.
-
Re: Blah blah blah Shannon Briggs says stuff (from Maxboxing)
Briggs' days of being "as talented as Wlad" are long gone....who has he fought since losing to Lennox Lewis.
The Lewis fight was the pinnicle of Shannon's career and he couldn't capitalize when he had Lewis hurt bad TWICE.
Wlad is just realizing his potential and honestly I don't see this fight being any different than the Wlad-Mercer or Wlad-McCline fights

Briggs KO'd Mercer with one shot, Wlad couldn't do that. ;) Also Wlad is a flavor of the moth, and will not be a long reigning champ, none of the current guys will IMO.

cc I dont see any of the current crop reigning for very long either. There will most likely be about 6 to 8 fighters that will trade the belts around till someone comes along to clean the heavy mess up.

Wlad still beat him in 6 and 3 years later Shannon beat him in 7...Wlad also knocked him down in the first round, Shannon didn't do that.
Wlad is 30, I think he'll be on top for a good long while until guys like Chambers, Scott, Witherspoon, and so on are ready to take over

I think Wlad is more vulnerable when he fights taller opponents , because he is in the danger zone more often, another words his range is also their range, and that jab and crab mentality don’t play out as well against a fighter that can hit you at the same distance . Briggs needs to watch Sanders footage and Jump right on Klit.

Yep, take him out early. He's like Golota, its a lot easier if you catch him early.
-
Re: Shannon Briggs says stuff
Well Stewart makes sure that Wlad holds whenever someone gets close, so jumping on him early won't work anymore because back then he didn't hold as much as he does now.
-
Re: Shannon Briggs says stuff
wlad will break shannon briggs into a cube and insert him into the refs anus.
-
Re: Shannon Briggs says stuff
I dont think think that Shannon has to get inside on Wlad. Wlad is two inches taller and one inch longer reach, so Briggs wont have to get as close as Peter or Byrd had to. Which hopefully will limit how much holding Wlad gets to do. That could be the key to the fight in how much Wlad is able to hold. If Briggs can get a little bit inside without Wlad holding then Briggs will end it early, but if Wlad is able to wrap him up everytime he Briggs gets close to inside then Wlad will end it.
-
Re: Shannon Briggs says stuff
My mind says Wlad dismantles him...The first time he feels that straight right flush to the face he will realize that Wlad hit's like an F'N freight train....If Briggs thought McCline was a tough big man to fight he should look at the tape of how Wlad just walked through him...My heart says there is a chance Wlad and his team underestimates Briggs and his recent opp and feel as though it will be an easy night out...Wlad gets tired and careless then its TKO in Briggs favor....If Wlad comes in and treats Briggs like a legit opp then I think he will have the dread locked Chess playing 260lb on his back thinking about how ol Dicky felt

Good post.....I agree with just about all of it except that from what I understand, Steward pretty much knows that this is going to be a difficult fight. I think that Wlad really needs to come out of the gate firing his right this time........he can't afford to have two rounds to warm up in as I believe that Brigss strategy will be to come right out and look for a 1st or 2nd round KO.
As for the rest of the thread.......what can I say FUCKING TYPICAL.....it's the same one or two sour puss' on here who try to discredit Wlad by talking about holding or this or that. To you I say this.......give the man credit for his gifts....he makes exciting fights for you!!!
That pudgy troll JT put us through 12 sloppy rounds with a very mediocre heavyweight and people on this board still give him credit??WTF
At least be honest with yourselves and realize that he just pu$$ied out of a fight with WLad BIG TIME!!!! He was offered lots of cash and a chance to get a belt and he wants to fight PETER????
What's that fucking tell you ???
WAKE UP and open you eyes!!! :o

As far as I am concerned, until these referees allow the short fighter enough time to fight on the inside no reason to put a fight together with Wlad and a short fighter , When you use the hold as a tool or a weapon its an illegal tactic, If your rocked that’s one thing, no problem, but if your doing it as part of a strategy its completely 100% illegal. Now the Ref’s jump right in a break up the action pushing the short fighter miles away from the target ! It’s Bullshit, what they need to do it is either take points away from the Tall fighter the moment that S*** starts happening , or allow the short fighter time on the inside, Yes Ali held a lot no doubt, but the referees allowed Frazier time to fight inside , so eventually the short fighter could get some punches off . The way it is now , its Bullshit ! So I say let Wlad try that jab and grab S*** on Valv. No need to ridicule James Toney.

Sure there's a need to ridicule JT........cause if you want credibility, then you should be able to back up your mouth with action...(walk the walk) and it is absolutely bewildering how half of the heavy fans on this forum can give JT credit when the man can even get into shape for a multi million dollar fight yet they blast Wlad for what????
Here are some facts about Wlad:
1) He has Awesome speed
2) He has Awesome power (even with that jab)
3) He throws combinations
4) He has good footwork and movement (ringmanship if you will)
5) He's taking the most difficult fights that no one thought he would take...everyone called him chinless so this guy got in the ring with one of the heaviest hitters in the division.
(that alone says it all)
6) Everyone said he had no stamina yet he took Peter the distance and Chris Byrd (+ a knockdown) in Byrd's "prime"
7) Everyone said he was heartless yet this guy has ducked NO ONE which is more than I can say for any heavyweight out there right now including JT
8 ) Wlad got knocked down by Peter (once legitamately and twice clubbed on the back of the head like some F****** caveman) and still picked his a** up off the canvas, won the fight by a fat margin and wobbled the 2005 heavy-hyped-hopeful of the year!!!!!
All of the things that I have stated here are facts....
SO if you dislike the guy for whatever reason that's fine, but don't try to attribute his success to holding.....most people are going to see right through that bullshat
This guy has more tools and more skills than anyone else in the division at the moment period.

Mccline is a hesitant ass scaredy cat. It is an embarassment that Briggs lost to him, but he didnt come to fight in the Wlad loss. If Briggs gets blown out or Ko'd from Wlad it will be because he came in overweight and underestimated da Klit, just like Kirk Johnson, old Ray Mercer and a lot of other guys have done with both Klitschkos.

The reason is he ate enough power shots to realize he didn't want anymore...I know Wlas can hit...I remember the Mercer fight...Yes Ray was past his best but he had never been down before..I remember a 3 punch combo Wlad landed in the 2nd (I think)..Ray went down for the first time ever..He got up and looked at Wlad with that Holy S$%# expression and just shook his head in dis belief...Im no Wlad fan I think he's questionable at best..I was a fan of his Brother who IMO was the more durable and solid of the two..But I give Wlad his due his offense is awsome

Re: Shannon Briggs says stuff
Shannon has fought no one who was in their prime and the heavyweight division is wide open. After the loss to Lewis and let's forget McCline, the winner is the one who takes charge right away and has the pop to do it. Once again, who has Briggs fought? Klitsko does have the pop and I am a fan of neither fighter and in the heavyweight division, the big man went out and fought. He won, he lost and he ducked no one. He took his lumps. Did Shannon? Klisko has had very successful comebacks some sloppy but he learned and who has Shannon fought, an aging Ray Mercer who started his pro career at Thirty? Well anyway, I feel Briggs is getting a shot because everyone else is busy and like Shannon says, he has to keep busy and the champ can use the practice.

Not quite but ok...Did u ever see the fight?? If not then see if you can find it somewhere and after the first knockdown you will see what im talking about....Point is...Wlads defense may not be the best...His stamina may not always hold up...Sanders proved he has trouble with high pressure but...as he showed in the Peters fight he is improving and unlike before just because he is down he is not out..Most of all i'll say it again...HIS OFFENSE IS AWSOME!!! Speed..Perfect form in the way he delivers his punches and POWER POWER POWER

What's that F****** tell you ???
4) He has good footwork and movement (ringmanship if you will)
5)
He's taking the most difficult fights that no one thought he would take...everyone called him chinless so this guy got in the ring with one of the heaviest hitters in the division.
(that alone says it all)
6) Everyone said he had no stamina yet he took Peter the distance and Chris Byrd (+ a knockdown) in Byrd's "prime"
7) Everyone said he was heartless yet this guy has ducked
NO ONE which is more than I can say for any heavyweight out there right now including JT
Since you're obviously another one of those that are buying into what HBO is selling, look at the end of the Wlad vs Byrd fight when they were doing interviews. They asked Lederman for his thoughts and as soon as he started talking about the holding, he got as far as "holding is not legal and it's just not fair", they cut him off quickly before the world hears the truth about what's really going on. Wlad is just an easy guy for them to promote and make money on so excuse me if I'm too smart to see through all that. He has the talent but no the chin or the heart and it shows by him having to hold a light hitting HW like Byrd.

Good post.....I agree with just about all of it except that from what I understand, Steward pretty much knows that this is going to be a difficult fight.

I am just saying its better when Wlad fight fighters his own size, makes for a better and more competitive fight, unless the smaller shorter stature fighter is a banger , the short fighter is going to need an equalizer being he wont’ be allowed more then a few seconds on the inside this day an age. I love Mills lane, “ Fight outta there “ Toney won’t beat Wlad. it’s a fight not worth making or seeing.
