Boxing for skinny ectomorphs?
Hey everyone, I just found this forum. I have recently been interested in getting into boxing. Unfortunatly I like 50 miles from the nearest gym, so I must kinda be self-relient on training.
For my question, I am 19, 6' and 130 lbs. Skinny! lol. I lift weights, I have gained alot of strength, but I am not really gaining muscle mass. Boxing kinda seems like a lost cause for me since I am 130 lbs, and not gaining any mass. Is it possible to become a boxer w/ my body?
I eat tons, lift every other day, but still got the fast metabolism. Any suggestion?
Thanks.

Don't worry. I'm a tall skinny motherfucker myself; (6'3" and 158lbs. after a meal). :( The only thing that would really prevent you from being a boxer is being overweight. Go put it to em'. 8)

Re: Boxing for skinny ectomorphs?
Question; being as skinny as I am, is it really worth it to try to bulk up, or should I just try to focus on strength and speed? I have read many post on lifting and such, but not too many really applied to my situation.
My current routine is:
curls 3 sets, 10 reps (28 lbs)
pushups 5 set 10 reps
brench press 3 sets 10 reps (80lbs, not my max lol)
after those I do shoulder shrugs, lateral lifts, buttery flies, ect.
any suggestion?

Stay away from curls, and weights all together for that matter until you find a good boxing coach . Curls will shorten your tendons in the bicep and prevent you from getting full extension on your punches.. your power is going to come from full extension, not big muscles, in fact big muscles are counter productive to a boxer. correct form and full extinctions will be your bread and butter, do push-up like crazy , chin ups wide grip for your shoulder and do lots of stomach exercise. skinny guys are the one's knocking everyone out ! Bulking up is not recommended .

Re: Boxing for skinny ectomorphs?
Stay skinny - Tommy Hearns, Chico Corrales, Manuel Medina and others didn't do too badly.
In boxing, the point is to be as light as you can, not to bulk up.
I bet you will be a monstor for your weight !!
;)

Tommy hearns and other skinny boxers alot of the time have very broad shoulders and back just not much mass though, but i see what your saying

Re: Boxing for skinny ectomorphs?
Those guys where tall and fought at a light weight, but what you have to remember is. They don't walk around at that weight or weight that much in the ring... they dry up before the weigh in. Amatuers can't do that. You fight to often for it to be safe.

How much physical activity do you do in a day and how many Kcals do you consume?
-
Re: Boxing for skinny ectomorphs?
other than my every other day workout, I play basketball about every other day.
So pushups are the way to go? How exactly will they help me?
-
Re: Boxing for skinny ectomorphs?
theres more to it than that ;) its all to do with energy balance. If you are eating less Kcals (energy) than you are using then you will not be able to maintain a healthy weight.
Any ide how much you eat?

Re: Boxing for skinny ectomorphs?
On an active day, I dont eat a whole lot. On a boring day, I eat like every 15 mins. atleast 4 average meals a day on a regular day. But its hard because I dont feel hungry too often.
-
Re: Boxing for skinny ectomorphs?
If you're not hungry then your probably eating enough... ;) don't tryand force the weight on... if you are 6 foot and 130 pounds you are 6 foot and 160 pounds... you don't look as slim as I'd imagined you would. you just have very little fat ;) maybe condsider eating a bit more fat (polyunsaturated vegetable fats etc ;)) its actually benificial for your energy systems to have some fat stored on you.
It all comes down to how you feel at the weight though... if you feel strong at it... they'll be few other 130 fighters who can match the power of your straight shots... just make sure you tie the shorter guys up on the inside :P
Like I was saying in another thread to some other guy, you may be the same height as some one like say Tyson (more or less) but you won't get built like them (with out being bulky and slow) because you have a different frame to them, just work with what you have ;)

Dude you look strong for that weight ! find a boxing gym , and start knocking em out ! remember form is the key, throwing punches correctly, full extension, and good balance and leverage and sweet dreams to the other guy ! Good Luck ! stay away from the weights ! you don't want to get any bigger . sit-ups like crazy, and push up like crazy !

Re: Boxing for skinny ectomorphs?
Thanks alot, but the gym is kinda outta the question for awhile. The nearest one is 50 miles, and I cant afford that. Guess I will see what I can teach myself.

Re: Boxing for skinny ectomorphs?
You got a good light weight boxing build , but as Adam said something like, you just gotta see if you feel strong and fast punching as you are . People dont really bulk for boxing unless your a heavy weight or moving up in class

Re: Boxing for skinny ectomorphs?

Unfortunately after watching Calvin’s last fight , that’s what it looked like “ That he learned from watching it on DVD” man was his last fight a snooze fest. No technique just posing and hugging. If Your going to hug on someone that much you need to blow them a little kiss ! Anyway that’s for another topic ! Good Luck bro !

Re: Boxing for skinny ectomorphs?
Thanks Poom, but I live in the woods, and we are running off 56k. Cant really download. Sucks.
I have another question, kinda off topic, but I dont want to start another tread if I dont have too.
Anyone use the exercize machine the Gazelle? Just from what ive been reading on these boards, id have to say that machine would be helpful for boxing training. I use it for getting myself loose, but not really into all that much. Anyone else own one?

Re: Boxing for skinny ectomorphs?
Seen the adverts... as a warm up, I can't see it beating skipping and military drills like tucks etc... and for training I can't see it beating a session on the heavy bag or a good session of road work ;)

Re: Boxing for skinny ectomorphs?
If you wanna gain mass as an ectomorph you need to:
1)stay away from cardio
2)lift reall heavy..( 4 sets 10-8-6-4 reps. increase weight each rep)
3) eat tons of calories.Try protein shakes that are designed for ectomorph. Those usually have like 600 calories per shake.
4) eat 6 times a day.(2 of those can be shakes.)
5)stay away from steroids and creatine and sh#t like that.
As an ectomorph if you do cardio you're using up your protein as energy since you don't have fat to use up.And since your muscles need lots of enery to grow..well that's where all the carbs come in(pasta, potatoes, rice)
Bulking usually happens in cycles. When you want to bulk you eat alot and lift heavy, after a few months when you're ready to lean out..You lift lighter and do more cario to drop the fat..
Hope this helps..

you need to lift heavier and eat alot more....80 pounds for the bench is pretty weak considering you weigh 130 pounds.
Squats, deadlifts and bench press should be in your routine....If you want to gain mass i suggest you go to bodybuilding.com.

nothing is wrong with creatine, it will improve your endurance....
I recommend it if your trying to bulk up for sure
-
Re: Boxing for skinny ectomorphs?
It won't improve endurance, because the creatine energy system is not used during long duration events.
It will improve activitys which use the ATP CP energy system but I've never felt the need to suppliment it, as long as you're eating a healthy amount of red meat you are practicly taking Creatine anyway. ;)

Adam, have you got any articles or links relating to ATP CP energy?
not 100% sure
-
Re: Boxing for skinny ectomorphs?
trust me. ;)
All of the body's energy systems work by creating new ATP molecules that when broken down turn inti ADP and release energy.
The Aerobic, Anaerobic and ATP CP all do this in different ways, rate and amounts before the system cann't create any more until it is replenished.
The ATP CP system works when CP (creatine Phosphate) looses a phosphate molecule which binds with ADP (which only has two molecules, ATP has three (tri) and looses one, becoming AD(dual)P) making the ADP back into ATP.
The ATP CP system uses Creatine Phosphate as its source, it resynthasises ADP into ATP extremely quickly but in very limited quantitys, especially compared to the Aerobic energy system which creates ATP at a much slower rate than the ATP CP system, but the system can produce vastly more ATP before shutting down.
The rate at which energy is created in the system determs the force of contractions it is available for (a sudden explove contraction can only be made by a system that can supply the energy needed for that contraction in an instant) and the amount of ATP that the system can create before needing to be replenished by the metabolism determins the duration.
The ATP CP and Anaerobic energy systems do not require Oxygen, thats why you can exhale has you contract during a clap press up or for the duration of a 6 punch combination (which are a mixture of ATP CP and Anearobic) but you can't exhale for the duration of a jog.
(or hold your breath whilst sitting still, breathing, your heart beating, your brain working... all needs Oxygen to work ;)

Re: Boxing for skinny ectomorphs?
Oh and to actually sort of make a point rather than just ramble (:P) creatine is only used as an energy source in the ATP CP system.
Which is not used during endurance events. ;)
I'm also gonna make it clear to any one reading (no one in particular, just feel I have to say it ;)) that it's not enough to just have the Energy sources in your body, you need to train your body to use them efficiently and train it so it adapts and holds a larger threshold of the thresholds/deposits of energy sources (fat, Glycogen (Complex carbs which are then broken down into simple carbs (glucose, either by digestion or simply already intaken as glucose) and then turned into Glycogen) and protien (though the body doesn't really use protien for energy as it has to be converted into fat which is inefficient) I don't know if Creatine Phosphate if classes as a protien or not (if it is, it's the only protien that is worth thinking about as an energy source ;))
