Julio Cesar Chavez Vs Floyd Mayweather
Ok Prime Chavez vs Mayweather Jr who would you think would win this fight and why? I see Chavez KO in 6 round. Why.. well I think chavez would pressure him alot and wear him out with body shots. Something like Castillo vs Floyd (1st) just that Chavez hard punches would of stop Floyd.
-
Re: Julio Cesar Chavez Vs Floyd Mayweather
maybe but remember meldrick taylor outboxed him and pernell whitaker
-
Re: Julio Cesar Chavez Vs Floyd Mayweather
so maybe flyod could avoid them body shots and win a 12 ud
-
Re: Julio Cesar Chavez Vs Floyd Mayweather
also remember that wasnt prime floyd against castillo 1.

Well yeah but he was past his prime by pernell whitaker.. and he TKO Taylor ;D
-
Re: Julio Cesar Chavez Vs Floyd Mayweather
i think it would be similar to the meldrick taylor fight only floyd wouldnt brawl him on inside like taylor did
-
Re: Julio Cesar Chavez Vs Floyd Mayweather
I think Floyd leans back to avoid some punches leaving his body unprotected and Chavez left to the body would seal the deal.
-
Re: Julio Cesar Chavez Vs Floyd Mayweather
we think different about the outcome but i like debating with people who know there boxing

Re: Julio Cesar Chavez Vs Floyd Mayweather
Cannot really match up prime for prime IMO, because Chavez peaked in November 87 against Rosario at 135lbs, and Mayweather was either at his best at 130lbs or 147lbs...
But I take Chavez to win by close decision at 130lbs, and to win a lot easier at 135lbs by decision.
Mayweather to edge a points decision at 140, and to win a very comfrotable decision at 147lbs.

I would slightly disagree...
Great match-up undoubtedly, but if it was made at 135lbs, it would be no slugfest, but a great scientific battle of two fighters with underrated boxing skills and defences.
Duran WS15

Come on they are mexican warriors... I do agree about the underrated boxing skills but once one of them starts slugging they both will resort to their warrior pride and slug back and forget about defence aslong as the other is slugging back.. that is what makes mexican fighters like them so exciting to watch. Its like Barrera and Morales the are decent boxers but mexican fighters dont like to back down from a slug fest ;D

I think you are getting confused with Jose Napoles who was Cuban born, but was very much a honorary Mexican...
As for your statement, remember Duran was 72-1 by the time of the SRL rematch and Chavez either 87-1 or 88-0 going into the Whitaker fight, so it neither liked losing. And part of that reason was because they would change tactics to beat different opposition.
Have no doubt, if either felt they could win this match up on the back foot, then that is what they would do.
Both were indeed Latino's, but like Monzon, Zarate, Arguello and Lopez (de la Hoya as well, if you believe him Latino), they were no ordinary Latino's, they were a whole level above the rest of boxing's rich history of Latino's IMO.

True statement. Pernell Whitaker won at least 9 rounds of that fight IMO 10. If you are a hard corps Whitaker fan then 11 but the fight was no where even close, and Meldric Taylor was putting on a boxing clinic with Chavez but a bogus ref and poor info from his corner allowed Chavez to steal a victory, I would see PBF winning this fight, he is a mixture of Pernell (defense not as good but solid) and Meldric (not as fast but very close).

You've got to also look at how many fight Chavez had had, when he fought Taylor and Whitaker - he was by no means prime then!!

So I guess Taylor broke his eye orbital and swallowed a pint of his own blood just to make it more intresting?
Richard Steele is an honest a ref as I have seen, he called as he saw it, he was not the timekeeper, he was there only for the safety of the fighters.
And Taylor was a damaged fighter both physically and psychologically post ChavezI, thus it could be argued Steele and Duva let the fight go on too long. ;)

We had this debate before so I don't know why we are going back into it, many boxers have broken thier eye orbitals, and everyboxer that has a cut in his mouth swallows blood including myself over the years, I don't know any boxer who has not suffered a cut in his mouth through a career (maybe you know many of them). There is no problem with you having your own opinion because you are entitled to it but you making it seem like it's a bogus comment is strange considering that there are millions of people that agree with me, the other thing is that Steele had other bogus stoppages beyond the Tyson-Roddick Chavez-Taylor fight which is why he get's booed everytime he refed a fight after that. As far as the post Chavez comment I believe that Terry Norris also contributed to his demise considering he fought at a solid level until that fight. Now the point was Pernell and Meldric showed that Chavez can not only be beaten but demolished if he faces an opponent with extreme technical boxing skills, guess what PBF has extreme technical boxing skills.

He was undefeated going into the both of those fights and had never showed signs of slowing down nor had he fought a mega fight before Taylor, Pernell shut him down in his prime in front of thousands of his fans that stood in shock.

Taylor demolish Chavez? The fight was painfully close (literally and figuratively for Meldrick) going into the 12th. I think you forget even if the fight had somehow gone the distance, Taylor would of only won by Split decision...
If the last round was scored 10/8 to Chavez, the fight would of been scored...
115-112(Taylor) 115-112 (Chavez) 116-111 (Taylor) ;)

That is a matter of opinion though. I would say Chavez was never quite the same fighter post Rosario in (87). By the time he moved up to 140lbs and beat Mayweather he was clearly past his best, but he was such a special fighter he kept some kind of form all the way though to de la Hoya (fight 2) in 1998!

Sure! It was a Oscar De La Hoya type scorecard, I am sure you agreed with one of the judges who scored the Oscar-Quartey fight 116-112 in favor of Oscar, or maybe the 114-114 in the Chavez-Whitaker fight, or better yet the 114-114 in the Lewis-Holyfield fight, I don't care about the bogus Don King scorecards. What did you score the fight? Meldric Taylor without a doubt won the first 9 rounds of that fight with the 10th being a close round to call and the last two Chavez in control, I think he was winning firmly, if you go off all the scorecards you don't believe in boxing robberies, that's alot of credibility you give to the judges. And look at your own evidence, you have one judge scoring it 116-111 which is 9 rounds to 3 for Taylor with the knockdown happening and another scoring the bout 115 to 112 which is 7 rounds to 5 for Chavez. WHAT? You have to be kidding me.

Let's say we agree with you and that's true, you should be able to pull out more than two rounds in a mega fight prime or no prime (which he was far beyond a shot fighter and with zero losses and great performances in his previous fights) and he could not do that against Pernell

For the examples you gave, I had De la Hoya winning the Quartey fight by a couple of rounds, Whitaker up by four and Lewis winning just.
I have no problem with a de la Hoya's win over Quartey, I had no problem with the Lewis/Holyfield draw... IMO far too many, got far too excited about far too little, you want be serious about sorting out corruption go and watch Everett/Escalera, that is an out and out robbery...
But back to the point, I had Taylor up 7/4 going into the final round... it was a close fight and on your own admission Chavez was closing in on Taylor late. ;)

BK - If Holyfield won 3 rounds in 1st Lewis fight it was being generous

Do not fall into DKP spin, the Chavez '0' is a myth...
JCC lost his 12th bout
The Ring books of the time clearly showed this.
But then Tyson gets put into prison and Chavez is Don King's main man, and all of a sudden that 'loss' disappears from Chavez's record.
On an entirely separate note ABC TV proved Don King paid The Ring to rate his fighters for the ill fated Ring/DKP sponsored 'United States Boxing Championship' in the 70s...
;)

I have watched it a couple times since, but I still see Lewis being far too respectful and not working hard enough.
I know I am huge minority but I really have no problem with that fight being scored a draw, I had Lewis winning but only just, and being British I am also have a bias to Lennox...

I will say that whilst I hate 10-10- rounds there were certainly a few in that fight - and you are spot on about Lewis showing too much respect

I do not think so. Against Mitchell and Zab Zab, he has IMO looked as good as he was in his period as a 130lber. I think he dipped slightly at 135 and 140lbs...

Re: Julio Cesar Chavez Vs Floyd Mayweather
You guys are forgeting a huge factor... Chavez was PASS his prime when he fought Pernell. And in the second Taylor fight (or the 12 round in the first ;D) he adopted to his boxing style and he got KTFO.

Re: Julio Cesar Chavez Vs Floyd Mayweather
This kinda reminds me of back when Ali was going through everybody that he fought. People started coming up with hypothetical matchups of who woulda, coulda, shoulda beaten Ali. Looks like that's what's going on with Floyd now. He's having a fairly easy time with the current crop. So people are resorting to fantasy fights.
I think Frankie Randall would have had two victories against Chavez, but he got jobbed in the rematch. Considering what Randall, Whittaker, and Meldrick Taylor did against Chavez, Floyd would have put on a clinic. ;)
