Team Hatton passes on Mesquita
http://www.fightnews.com/fightnews_2...kZJycxuPE.html
The management of unbeaten, albeit untested, Brazilian welterweight Antonio Mesquita (33-0, 27 KOs) has tendered an offer to current WBA champion Ricky "The Hitman" Hatton (41-0). Lion Heart Boxing Productions has offered Team Hatton $1m plus a percentage of TV revenues. Dennis Hobson from Team Hatton responded, "I am not sure this is a viable option - Mesquita is unbeaten but has no rankings with the WBA and is a relatively unknown fighter in the UK and US. Given Ricky is under pressure to make a mandatory defense in December this is an unlikely option. We are looking to make unification matches and take on the best at 140 and 147 pounds. The Brazilian seems keen but this is an unlikely opponent for us in the near future." Mesquita recently impressed with a six round stoppage of Santos Pakau (27-2-1) on July 19th which was featured on ESPN2's Wednesday Night Fights.
I have heard Mesquita looks very very good, anyone actually seen him in action?

Sooooo, even Urkal would be better than this guy, at least he's ranked. What about if he accepted Harris' challenge, bombs him out, the mans up with Castillo. Man that would be sweet.

Re: Team Hatton passes on Mesquita
Fair enough galaxy, decent points but he's being offered $1mill!

True, it's easy money. $1 million is $1 million.

Some times unknown is good. Ricardo Torres and Chris John were both unknown before facing Cotto and Marquez

Re: Team Hatton passes on Mesquita
Good point Demise and maybe Hatton's camp sees it that way too,a possibly dangerous fight.

John was ranked, but this guy might be good, but the fact of the matter is Hatton's always been critcised for a lot of his opposition. If he was to take a fight like this imagine the sh*t that would be thrown his way, look at the flack he got when there was talk of him facing Urkal ( a ranked guy ).

bieng unbeaten doesnt allways mean much! i mean he could have fought all bums!
and hattons camp is right he has no name i never heard of the guy or the bitch that he "impressed" everyone by beating... and hes on wednesday night fights, and hatton is on hbo ppv says something, everyone is saying hatton needs the big fights and then theyr saying fight this guy youve never heard of make up your minds. i mean ive not seen the guy but hes obviously not the big fight hatton needs, i say get the defence out the way, look good, get used to bieng a welter cos you wont get any further at light welter cos its all at welter and everyones there. take out vivian harris, no matter if its not the biggest fight he cant be called out and not take it, and then have a showdown with jlc, baldomir and eventually work his way to a superfight with floyd, assuming he stays undefeeated.
-
Re: Team Hatton passes on Mesquita
Take out the mandatory & then go for the Super fight against JLC.
-
Re: Team Hatton passes on Mesquita
Good for Hatton! I saw Mesquita vs. Pakau. Santos Pakau was awful and Mesquita wasn't that much better. Mesquita's hands are slow and his punches looping although he may have some power. Pakau had nothing at all.
Mesquita doesn't really move. He baby steps in and stands right in front of his opponent. I can't imagine Hatton Mesquita being a good fight for anyone.

Re: Team Hatton passes on Mesquita
Hatton was supposed to fight this guy about 2 years ago and got SLATED when the name was mentioned, Even his own fans were having none of it.
also so what if he has been offered $1 million. He has earned more than that during his ring walks from his last 3 fights. Rick will be looking at 5-6 times that amount for his next fight.

Agreed. The Urkal fight is just as bad as this one. He should fight Harris and then Castillo. Or rematch Collazo.

Re: Team Hatton passes on Mesquita
imo as mandatory challengers go, this guy isnt all that bad hes been on and around the top for a few years and fought some great fighters like magee, harris twice, and tszyu, so i think its fair ricky takes this and gets onto some better fights at welter, dropping back to light welter just isnt a option at this point in his career cos he needs the big fights at welter.
-
Re: Team Hatton passes on Mesquita
i think he loses to any of the top guys at welter.
-
Re: Team Hatton passes on Mesquita
well i duno, maybe ive not seen the guy in action, just his record and his has some top names, just no top wins, your prob right, but the top guys at welter are through and through badd asses these days. lol
-
Re: Team Hatton passes on Mesquita
Yeah but he aint a welter-fighter..
..he's light welter and only 5'6.
Feather's and lightweights are taller than him.
He jumped up with very very little notice and took on the WBA champ and grinded out a close result.
That is more impressive that it appears - i would personally like to see him go to 140 and get back the WBA and IBF belts, beat Cotto for the WBO and smash Witter for the WBC in a domestic fight.
And become the undisputed 140 champ.
He could fight urango and M'baye on the same night...
..only Cotto would be risky.

he's just too small. the 13 ko collazo is not a hard-hitting guy, but if that fight had gone another round he would have ko'd hatton. (and even so, i thought that fight was a draw for hatton at best.) put him in there with mosely or anyone else with some pop and he's finished.

JLC is the riskiest fight and I don't think Ricky can win it.

he certainly aint getting cotto at 140 cos cotto is moving up to 147 because he too knows that all the fights are at welter, i dont care for whitter and though hes a good fighter hes not one of the big fights that hatton is looking for.
and the others are just small fish to fry for hatton.

Re: Team Hatton passes on Mesquita
This is a simple case of Risk / Reward ratio...lots of risk and little reward. A good Pass by the Hatton Camp.

I think he should go back to lightwelter and fight any of the top five. If he stays where he is then fight any of the top ten.

I think mesquita needs more exposure in the U.S before anyone will take that risk, but yeah maybe a Zab would do it, being he is desperate right now.. I think Zab still have what it takes, he just needs some discipline in his life.
