Finally...Calzaghe returns October 14! Who do you want him to face?
Calzaghe returns October 14!

Sports Network Promoter Frank Warren confirmed to Fightnews.com this evening that WBO/IBF Super-middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe will return to action at the MEN Arena in Manchester on October 14th. He stated, "Joe will return to the 20,000 MEN Arena in Manchester where he had his crowning night to beat Jeff Lacy in March for the unification of the WBO and IBF titles. We hope to announce the details of the opponent on Wednesday once the contract is signed. The bout will be at 168 pounds and part of a triple world title bill on October 14th. If Joe is successful in this bout and Glen Johnson defeats Clinton Woods on September 2nd in the UK then they will both fight for the IBF Light-heavyweight title early in 2007. That deal has been agreed in principle for the winners of both fights coming up and represents a great incentive to both of them." Sports Network hope to announce opponent details tommorrow.
I'm sure that everyone has that special someone that they want Joe to beat or...to beat Joe...but let's just conentrate on whom you'd most like to see him fight before the proposed Johnson bout of 2007.
The options that I posted are the only ones that I feel are remotely legit & I am sure that none of them will be chosen & Joe will fight some tune upish fall guy...but they are what they are...

Re: Finally...Calzaghe returns October 14! Who do you want him to face?
Hey wack firstly let me give you a well deserved :coolclick: for failing to include Kessler, I agree entirely with his status as 'another fighter' :P
Bit suprised you missed out Manfredo though, I believe he's the truth but only time will tell.
Seriously though I would like to see him in with Ann wolf just kidding :P
I would love to see Calzaghe Froch although I have to say Froch is growing on me now and I'd like his run to go on a bit longer.
I don't know, there really isn't anyone available I don't think, Jones but he'd get killed. Tarver would probably want $30 million seeing as he is a bona fida hollywood movie star now so I don't really see a big fight for him.
Probably just a routine defense so as not to spoil his plans for 2007.

Re: Finally...Calzaghe returns October 14! Who do you want him to face?
Montell Griffin is too big a stylistic step up for Joe.
Mundine would be interesting.
-
Re: Finally...Calzaghe returns October 14! Who do you want him to face?
Hopkins, Winky, Beyer, Johnson, RJJ, in that order

Joe would probably do to Griffin what Michalczewski and RJJ (second fight) did to him.

Yeah why waste his time fighting Roy Jones when he can make a "routine" defense against a no namer. Like Kabary Salem again. Salem did drop Calzaghe on his ass.

I would love to see Roy Jones get the chance, he deserve it. and i feel he has a good chance to win it.. This fight would be good money for both fighters.

Re: Finally...Calzaghe returns October 14! Who do you want him to face?
oh man its a no brainer its all about the great RJJ baby!
i mean we all know B-Hop is at the retirement home unless otherwise.
but i just see the haters saying either way if RJJ wins that Joe C. is not a true 175 and if Joe C. wins they gonna say washed up RJJ not the prime.
personally id love to see RJJ had over the big first L :lickish:

Yeah i think calzaghe would have a lot of trouble with mundine. Calzaghe keeps his hands low...and mundine is one of the people who can be compared to rjj speed wise....and mundines fav shot is his right and hed land it on calzaghe, right down the middle.
-
Re: Finally...Calzaghe returns October 14! Who do you want him to face?
An RJJ fight or a Kessler fight would be god for his legacy, because remember,he is coming to the end of his great career so he cannot waste time on any prospects or unknowns, not at this stage.

I guess that you are joking? ??? ??? ??? ???
Look at the date and guess why Wacko had left out Kessler and Beyer of his list....

My one big worry about Frank's statement today, which has penned in a Clinton Woods bout at 175 in early 2007 is that Calzaghe will have to come back down to 168 if he wants to unify all the belts next summer. That is what I want to see more than anything else, even more than Calzo-Woods, is Calzaghe against the winner of Beyer v Kessler. Either way, that lippy Kessler fan will eventually get his mouth shut! I'd like to see Calzaghe v RJJ in October, I reckon it could certainly be interesting, and would put the same name that CW has an L next to it on his record.
B-Hop won't come out unless the money's right, and in Manchester, I don't see the money being right. Tarver. Ditto. I'm sure Farnk knows Joe is on the final straight and will come up with a nice moneymaker for them both, whoever its against.

It doesn't say anything about fighting Clinton Woods :-\ What happens if Woods wins :-\

Unfortunately MONEY is what seems to be stopping the fight happening - as in Roy wants too much ;)

Re: Finally...Calzaghe returns October 14! Who do you want him to face?
if he had 5 fights left this is who i would want him to fight not in any order roy jones bernard hopkins carl froch clinton woods and mikkel kessler that would be perfect for him or maybe put glen johnson in that list

Re: Finally...Calzaghe returns October 14! Who do you want him to face?
Another battle of brittain could be set up by October.
Okay, Clinton Woods isnt such a big draw, i know. However i would still make for an exciting and marketable fight here in the U.K.
Probably the most realistic target.... Given the date scheduled.

If Clinton beats Johnson on Sept 2nd then fights Calzaghe on Oct 14th apart from it being a miracle it'll most defintely secure him 2nd place in the Sports personality of the year comp.

I agree...I think Joe C is past fighting anyone that doesn't have a title though....anything short of unifying the 168 division or the lt hw for that matter would be seen as padding.....IMO of course....

Beats Calzaghe or fights him? Because Clinton beating Johnson this time round is anything but a Miracle... well with in his grasp.
Agree to fight Calzaghe 5 weeks after a title fight would be miracously stupid though :P
-
Re: Finally...Calzaghe returns October 14! Who do you want him to face?
i would like to see Calzaghe in the ring with Mundine :D
because then will Snakey se that mundine is not so good ;D
Calzaghe by ko

Re: Finally...Calzaghe returns October 14! Who do you want him to face?
AP 8/8/06
'Royal makes his return to the ring as "kevil"'
::** ::** ::** ::** ::** ::** ::** ::** ::**
Anyway,
why is Joe wasting his time with a no namer? What if he hurts his hands again? How long is the intrest around JC going to last? He needs to hurry if he wants that big $$$ fight.

No
I too think Clinton can win this time. I assume Jim Boogie didn't realise Woods and Johnson were set to fight next month.
And yes If Woods beat both those guys on that timeline it would be akin to the Jesus man turning water into wine.

Re: Finally...Calzaghe returns October 14! Who do you want him to face?
i think roy or hopkins would be the best fights.. but roy wants to much, bernard may not come out of retirement even though hes shown signs of wanting to come backt to the game,
frankly i think tarver at light heavy would be a big fight a chance for joe to go big and a chance for tarver to redeem himself in a big fight, plus i'd buy tickets to see all of these men no doubt!! lol
but i dont think roy could drop to super middle and have a chance hes already lost his power since droping weight all that time ago and i dont believe he has it back!

Why would this fight have to happen in Manchester. Hopkins-Calzaghe in Vegas. I mean, Hopkins has achieved far more in his career than Calzaghe--why would he be the one that would have to travel, especially if it meant less money?

Re: Finally...Calzaghe returns October 14! Who do you want him to face?
Just a thought, but you reckon Winky could be persuaded to move up to 168 and fight him?
He seems to be stuck with nowhere else to go at 160 if he's determined not to fight Jermain again, and apparantly Margarito doesn't want to know at 154 lb.
Would be a great matchup, I'd like to see Winky get pummelled for 12 rounds again

He's said in recent interviews that that Jermain's people don't want to fight now (which is true--DiBella said that JT will take 2-3 fights before considering a rematch with Winky), but that a fight with Jermain will "definitely" happen again, because the fans want it.

I'd call a fight against Calzaghe a toss-up, though Winky as a natural 154-pounder would be seriously handicapped against a 6-2 guy who's fought at 168 his whole career and could easily be fighting at LHW or even Cruiser. If they were the same size, Winky easy UD.

Actually Calzaghe is only 5ft 11 but I see that Winky is now fighting this autumn anyway so I guess we won't eve see this. Shame

Hes improved alot since that kessler fight, watch how he schooled danny green...i guy that was dominating beyer who your boy is fighting next. By the way, dont underestimate beyer...he is one crafty fighter and i wouldnt be surprised if he manages to pull an upset.

Re: Finally...Calzaghe returns October 14! Who do you want him to face?
Winky just said the other night on ESPN that he wants Calzaghe. It might be neat to see some accurate power punches penetrate Winky's long lobster arms.

Re: Finally...Calzaghe returns October 14! Who do you want him to face?
Funny thing is when Calzaghe was negotiating with Beyer, the only thing that kept the deal from being done was Calzaghe insisting on an early september date. Beyer couldn't do it as his cuts from previous fight needed more time to heal. So instead Beyer turned to Kessler - and they agreed on the 14. october date.
But NOW Calzaghe ends up fighting at the same date he couldn't wait for earlier. Funny stuff.
Makes you really wonder wtf is wrong with mr. Warren.
I mean with Calzaghes fame and all, why is it, with the exception of the Lacy fight, that Warren has succeded in getting NO meaningful fight for Calzaghe for such a long time?
Anyway not surpricing that Calzaghe never mentions Kessler or Beyer. I remember in connection with the Lacy fight, a journalist asked Calzaghe about "the other two champs" (Beyer and Kessler). Joe's reply was: "Noone cares about the other champs!". I gues that's how he feels and he's gonna stick to it.

As far as I can remember, Calzaghe suffered an injury a while ago and that is why his september comeback was put back until October. I have no evidence to back this up, just remembering comments that have been in the press before.
Also, I have a sneaking feeling that you don't like Calzaghe, thus won't be too keen on sympathising with Calzaghe wanting a fair share of the pot when you consider that he is likely to be the big draw of most of the fights that he's in.
FW said there will be an announcement about it this week, so eyes open folks.

I would like that, but Winky wouldnt beat Calzaghe...Winky just got through against Taylor. Calzaghe is a step up too far...
Still, I wouldnt mind watching it....

Calzaghe COULD NOT fight Beyer on Octboer 14, but he CAN fight some drunkard from underneath a Cardiff bridge (or whoever else FWarren will sell us as the most threatening opponent to date).

Being that aforementioned drunkard, i object to any suggestion that Calzaghe would choose to fight me over Beyer. Anyhow, what I was saying was that although originally Calzaghe wanted to fight in September, and didn't want to wait until October for the fight, I think he did pick up an injuryafter the deal with Beyer fell through, forcing him to put back the date of the fight.

Beyer priced himself out of a clash with Calzaghe...this is an old ass arguement.
He would later go on the injured list once again after starting negotiations with Kessler & then Jones.

Re: Finally...Calzaghe returns October 14! Who do you want him to face?
Is Joe defending his belts or going for a big money fight? Dosent he have a mandatory?
