Jeff Lacy: “I am coming back to dominate”
Interview By Gabriel Montoya (Aug 8, 2006)
http://www.doghouseboxing.com/Gabrie...oya_080806.htm
Coming into his bout with current 168-pound World Champion Joe Calzaghe, it seemed all Jeff Lacy had to do was simply show up and the rest would take care of itself. Whatever test lay in front of him, be it boxer, slugger or any combination of the two, Jeff’s left hook combined with his power/pressure style and iron will had always seen him through. In one instance, his opponent simply left the podium upon seeing Lacy’s physique at a weigh-in. The opponent, who shall nameless, did not return.
March 4, 2006 was supposed to be the day that Jeff ‘Left Hook’ Lacy became a superstar. Having fought six times since June of 2004, Lacy was on a tear that saw him stop Syd Vanderpool in a hard fought war for the vacant IBF title (Lacy’s first major belt), go life and death with Omar Sheika, and be the first to drop and stop Robin Reid. Coming off the Scott Pemberton fight, which was yet another brutal display of Lacy’s power-punching ways, the time had come for Lacy to claim his throne and fight perennial 168-lb titleholder Joe Calzaghe. The fight was to be on, once again, the Welsh fighter’s home soil in England. USA vs. Britain. Our 168-lb answer to Mike Tyson against a man many referred to as Joe ‘CalSlappy’, who was often reviled for inactivity and pulling out of fights due to injury. The table was set: an oft-injured southpaw British champion (who had made seventeen defenses of his title, by the way) against one of most savage power punchers in recent memory. For a man who once won a fight simply by showing up to the weigh-in, it seemed once again all he would have to do is show up.
The fight, along with the grueling schedule leading up to it, would prove disastrous.
“From the first two punches I threw in the fight, everything ran out of me,” Lacy explained to Doghouse Boxing from his home last Friday. “The only thing in was to keep trying and trying and trying, never giving up, as you see for twelve rounds. I kept trying and trying and trying to the point of I just did not have it. I felt like my punches had nothing on it. It was a crazy feeling where you don’t feel weak but you don’t feel like your punches are doing anything. I felt he fought a handicap for twelve rounds and he still couldn’t get me out. The way I feel about that performance, anybody could have beaten me that night. I just didn’t show up.”
Lacy took the first prolonged beating of his life, being out-boxed by the Welshman over twelve rounds in a shocking upset loss that solidified Calzaghe’s title reign and sent Lacy back to the drawing board. Now some five months later, Jeff Lacy is at something of a crossroads. A once overpowering offense is at this point in need of a little defense. Luckily for Lacy, he has in Winky Wright, one of the best defensive fighters in the game, as a sparring partner as well as the man who has trained them both for years, Dan Birmingham.
“When we go back to the gym, we are working on a lot of things," says Lacy. "I think it [the Calzaghe fight] was a wake-up call. The way I look at my life, everything that happens, happens for a reason.”
The retooling process doesn’t end with just adding new skill sets. Lacy’s go-for-broke fight schedule will be retooled as well.
"I was out there trying to get as much experience as I can. [My attitude] is still is the same. I‘ll fight anybody. I just have to slow my pace down. All the things I thought were working for me, worked against me in the end. I love to always train. I love to be in great condition. It hurt me. It hurt me for the Calzaghe fight, fighting as much as I did. I have to pace myself with my training, and taking the fights so close together.”
Since before the Calzaghe fight, Lacy had been trying to get now former Light Heavyweight Champ Antonio Tarver into the ring. “I wanted the Tarver fight before the Calzaghe fight. Bottom line. It’s impossible to negotiate with Antonio Tarver. It’s totally impossible. He thinks he God’s gift to the world. And that’s where it fell out. It fell out in negotiations. That’s why that fight didn’t happen.”
Lacy, being the true warrior he is, eschewed the idea of a comeback fight, and tried again to lure Tarver into an October showdown. (Tarver is fresh off a shutout loss of his own to Bernard Hopkins in June.) But once again, the fight fell apart in negotiations.
“It came down to money,” says Lacy.
The offer from the Tarver camp was for $1.5 million. But as with all big paydays, there were strings attached.
“The $1.5 million is a lot, but the attachment to the $1.5, that’s the thing. He wanted the entire gate. Why would I want to give up all the gate when I know the reason for he and Roy Jones coming here [St. Pete Times Forum, Tampa, FL] was because I packed in 12,000 in the arena. Then they came here and they only had 3,000 more than I had, and that’s two big names. I fought a nobody. Nobody knew who Robin Reid was [in the States], and I did 12,000 here. Why would I want to give Tarver my entire gate when I know what my gate is? That’s gonna generate three more million. He wanted all the rights to international TV, and all my gate. And then wanted to pay me 1.5? Why would I do that? I wanted to do a 50/50 split deal. He doesn’t have nobody to fight to make that kind of money. Nobody wants to see him fight Glen Johnson. Nobody wants to see Tarver and Roy Jones. People calling him to do a movie. That’s his best bet. Bottom line, I think he is definitely scared to take the fight. He don’t have the heart to take the fight, and now that I have moved on, the fight is not going to happen.”
After the Tarver fight fell through a second time, another opponent search began, and soon enough 168-pound rising contender Allan Green was being lined up, but that fight came off the table too. This time, the reason was not money or an opponent overestimating his worth; time and weight turned out to be the culprits instead. When we spoke in June, Lacy as well as Gary Shaw had mentioned an October comeback bout against a fighter to be named later. But the Tarver fight, which was envisioned as a November headliner on Showtime, was to be at 175lbs. When that fight fell apart late last month, Lacy’s fight date was moved back to October on the Corrales vs. Casamayor undercard but at the 168-lb limit, a weight harder to make in the now short amount of time left to prepare.
Says Lacy: “I thought I had a November date for me. Not a fight on an undercard. I thought I had a November date for me. That’s the difference; I didn’t care about fighting in October, but I didn’t find out until the last minute. Till two months out when I am 200 pounds heavy. That’s the main reason I pulled out. I didn’t say I didn’t want to fight Allan Green. I just wasn’t going to kill myself to make 168 when I had two months to do so. [Usually I have] three-month camps with the first month being conditioning. It was a weight issue.”
For now, the Green fight is on hold, but may be rescheduled.
“There might be a chance I might fight in December," says Lacy. “But if I don’t fight in December, I’ll come back at the beginning of the year."
Whomever he fights next, Lacy’s desire to hold belts at middleweight, super middleweight and light heavyweight has not changed. Although a future match up with middleweight titlist and fellow Olympic classmate Jermaine Taylor is a possibility, Lacy says that not too much can made of their past sparring sessions.
"We sparred in the amateur Olympic camp. That was in 1999-2000. We both have learned a lot. It’s all about what the people expect. No matter what I tell you now, how I think it would be, people still want to see it for itself. I think it will be a great fight."
Though contemplating immediate future opponents, Lacy still has Calzaghe on his mind first and foremost.
"It was an off night,” Lacy said. “I dealt with southpaws. I never had any problems with southpaws. In fact, I like fighting southpaws better than right handed [fighters] because that is the first style I learned to fight with Winky Wright. The southpaw style wasn’t it. It was things that I didn’t say leading up into the fight. In camp, I was burned out. I tried to take a couple a weeks off to regain everything that I usually have. I came back to the gym, and I was thinking 'I don’t want to back out of this fight, because [Calzaghe] has always done this and I don’t want to look like I am backing out’. No matter how it looks, not fighting in March would have looked like I was ducking Calzaghe. Then I would have had that pressure that he has always had. I was burned out. You think about all the things you are going through, but you don’t think about [what it means] as it’s happening. I was just thinking, 'I want to go in there and win’. And then I was thinking about taking a vacation right after that. I can honestly tell you that I had things that were going on behind the scenes that I don’t usually normally go through. For one, the biggest thing, was I felt burned out. My trainers knew. It was out, but I kept it away from [the video] because of the fact that I look at this fight like 'okay, my vacation is going to start after this fight’. I thought that I was going to rise to the occasion. I have always been that type of person. But in this particular fight, coming into his hometown, eating the type food I am not used to eating... Everything entered into it. I am not taking anything away from Calzaghe’s performance. I want to see if he is able to take that easy win that he got over me and put it on the line again. That’s the question. Is he able to do that? Trust me, if I won that easy the first time, I wouldn’t think twice to do it again."
If a Calzaghe rematch cannot be made, Lacy’s career philosophy has not changed. He wants only the toughest fights.
"The thing is, everybody has a goal in life. Every fighter is different. My goal is to let the fans know that I never ducked nobody, took all the tough fights and won. You have some fighters that want to be the best pound-for-pound, but if you look at it, it’s still saying the same thing I’m saying. To be pound-for-pound entitles you to fight the best out there. So my focus isn’t [making] the pound-for-pound - . My focus is to fight the best out there. I want to come back and dominate like I was doing before Calzaghe. When I come back to fight, I am coming back to dominate. I am looking to get my titles back. I am looking to Calzaghe. I am looking to redo this thing.”

Re: Jeff Lacy: “I am coming back to dominate”
I hope he comes back to dominate...I'd like to see him BRAWL with Allan Green it would be GREAT for boxing sort of like a Hatton-Gatti fight would be

Re: Jeff Lacy: “I am coming back to dominate”
Sparring with Winky Wright seems to be all we hear about how he is going to technically improve to be able to cope with a situation.
He fought an offensive south paw and we were supposed to be impressed because he'd been sparring a defensive south paw.
And now he is going to improve his defence by sparring against an offensive fighter?
He needs to spaw offensive fighters and stay in his shell in sparring to improve his defence... not winky wright.

Re: Jeff Lacy: “I am coming back to dominate”
Sounds similar to the St. Petersburg times interview he made right afte rthe fight. CC. Very honest fighter. He wants a rematch with Calzaghe but he knows Calzaghe doesn't have to give it to him and he isn't complaining. I have all the confidence in the world that he is coming back to dominate. I think he will be a top 10 p4p fighter, and I think he will be a multi division champion and I've got bashed for this before, but I still think he can KO Calzaghe. I wouldn't mind a break til next year because of his activity up until the Calzaghe fight. Can't wait to see him back in the ring.

Well he also has Chad Dawson in his stable who is an offensive southpaw. But I think it's more of the writers dwelling on Wright then he and his camp are.

Re: Jeff Lacy: “I am coming back to dominate”
I hope Lacy comes back and does well....
but he discredits Joe there "I felt like anybody could have beaten me".....Joe would do it again Mr Lacy ::**

Re: Jeff Lacy: “I am coming back to dominate”
The fight was to be on, once again, the Welsh fighter’s home soil in England ???
Lacy's great 4 boxing, i love his attitude of wanting to fight the best fighters!
how many fighters after that loss would be looking 4 Tarver or Green as a comeback fight!
on the wanting to fight JC again, I give him credit 4 wanting the fight but can't ever see him beating Joe

Maybe he would but I think it's legit. He was out of his element, you could see it just on his ring walk and after round 1. He wasn't ready for a fight that big. He didn't really discredit him, he said it was an excellent performance but...I'm sure he was telling the truth. I mean it's a lot easier to say he got beat by a better man then say that he blew it and it was on him. I have thought from the night of the fight on that it was as much of a Lacy loss then it was a Calzaghe win. Still it was a masterful performance.

Gabriel Montoya and Jeff Lacy are idiots.

Anyone notice who posted this? Seems to be some spelling and grammar errors. Is the writer of this story not so good with English or is the poster ROYAL and made a few 'minor' changes to the article? :detective:

To be honest I dont really see him saying " I was beaten by the better man". He said he could have been beaten by any man. Thats a small token of respect.
I wanna see Jeff do well, but to say any man could have beaten him that night does not bode well for the future....he needs to solve that defence..,.

Agree on the defence. But when he says any man could have beaten him, I think he was alluding to him being burnt out. It was his first ever big fight and...he just wasn't ready. Oh well, he'll be back and I think he'll get another fight with Calzaghe somewhere down the line and I still think he beats Calzaghe. Call me dellusional but Calzaghe fought Lacy's fight on the inside last time. It was just that Lacy was nothing more then a punching bag standing in front of him. Won't be the same a second time. Of course he needs 4 or 5 fights before a Calzaghe rematch is even discussed but I think it will happen.

I hope there is a rematch in the future. And though I will be supporting Lacy all the way in his comeback. When it comes to a fight with Joe, you know where I will display my loyalties.
I think Lacy can rule the division, but a victory over Calzaghe will not play a part in it...

Kind of wierd that we say one of the most lopsided 12 round shut outs in the history of boxing and we're talking about a rematch ;D

The thing is that Lacy was awesome, and most people thought he would mutilate Calzaghe. it just happened to be that the hottest young US star got beaten by a welshman....
Lacy needs a lot of work and to be honest he should stay away from Joe for at least 2 years, and even then only if Joe is still around then...

Re: Jeff Lacy: “I am coming back to dominate”
Like I said before you dont have to question this kids Heart, Power, Courage, Tenacity and will...A few refinements and this kid has all the tools be top flite for years to come...
The fact that he was fatigued goes without saying, he was an extremely active champion he was fighting every 3 months....
Hey like I said before the ones that think to much of themselves and believe there own hype are the ones that never recover Mentally from a beating....Lacy is Humble and Mature

CC, too many fans leave a fighter if he loses a fight, Lacy's still an exciting fighter whether he lost or not.
Will he dominate? I don't know but I think he'll probably stop Green and he deserves a LOT of credit for taking that as the comeback fight.

He might be, but I definitely think he is as good as he showed himself in the Lacy fight. I mean, I think if there is a rematch, Calzaghe is going to have to be better then he was in the first fight. Ok, not better, smarter. He stood in front of Lacy all night, capitalize that night. fought Lacy's fight but Lacy just didn't have the tools to on March 4. I think he will put his punches together in a rematch. I think he'll do everything better. He had Calzaghe in front of him all night. Just didn't capitalize. I would like to see what he would do given a second chance.

But its a positive look at lacy's comeback and there is no talk of kessler!!
Perhap our good friend Royal is using the 'devide and conquer' strategy. He post this positive article on JL , yet it seems to have JL not give JC credit. So you have to ask yourself this: Why would Royal post a seemingly good article on JL when we all know he hates him 1. because hes black 2. because hes American. Look back to his last post on JLs return. "Really? Who cares....blah blah". He dosent mention Kess because he thinks us, of lower genetics , might catch onto his ploy to take over! So now he pits the JC fans against the JL fans all in an attempt in to further his quest for 'saddo domination'!!! We must form an allegence against this evil before its too late!!! :army:
Anyway, did anyone see Holy vs Tyson 1? Holy beat his ass. So why did Holy vs. Tyson 2 happen? Because it was hard to believe Tyson got his ass handed to him. Much like hardly anyone thought JC would win. Id like to see JC vs. JL part 2.

Regardless of what Lacy says do you really believe he wants to fight Calzaghe again?
He can say whatever he wants, now, theres not a hope in hell of there ever being a rematch
I like Lacy, I hope he comes back and shows what a good fighter he is and that he lost because he was facing an exceptional champion.

As a follower of Lacy, I rally do. I really do beleive everything that comes out of his mouth in regards to the Calzaghe fight. The guy took what Calzaghe had for 12 rounds and after the fight was fairly repulsed when Jim Gray asked if he wished the fight would be stopped. I have no doubt in my mind he wants to prove himself again. But even he knows that Calzaghe doesn't have to give him a rematch and there would be no complaints if he didn't. Even if Lacy dominates 175 or 168 for a while, Calzaghe doesn't have to give him a rematch.

Re: Jeff Lacy: “I am coming back to dominate”
I am Huge Lacy fan. I believe what he says about the calzaghe fight. There was alot of pressure being put on him! The nerves got to him and made him weak on fight night. LACY WAS SUPPOSED TO COME TO ENGLAND A FORTINIGHT BEFORE THE FIGHT. HE CAME ONE WEEK BEFORE, SO HIS BLOOD/BODY WASNT USED TO THINGS. i believe his worse nightmare came true on that night, no fighter wants to get embarrased or dominated like that!
I have 21 of lacy's fights, and i noticed that he has a good defensive reputoire when he uses it. But he gets hit alot by ordinary guys cos he is usually concentrating on offense. he has very little head movement. This guy is a Power/Pressure fighter, if he gets his defense good, i feel sorry for his opposition. i still feel he could KO calzaghe. Lacy is a slow starter, he always will be, but once the fight goes on, he becomes stronger, and once his opponent is worn out by running around he usually finishes em!
I noticed Jeff was getting hit quite a bit early on in his career by silly shots, but then in some fights like the richard grant fight he showed some good defense! If he improves his defense he will come back and put the fear of God in other fighters hearts! he will dominate...i hope he does!
Go Jeff, You have our SUpport!!!

Re: Jeff Lacy: “I am coming back to dominate”
I believe Lacy will come back with a vengeance,I believe that he was in there with a man(JC) who is light years ahead of everyone else in the division and I think Jeff can beat everyone else. I'd like to see him go after the other champs(prob Kessler after he unifies with Beyer) and then,in a year,if JC is still about...who knows?? He hs alot to work on but also has alot of positives like his power, determination etc and dam,the boy has a HECK of a chin! Didn't JC land like 1,000 times????
Usually,I would say it as a load of crap about not being himself etc but alot of my hardcore Lacy friends said at the beginning of the fight they did not think it was Jeff in there. Not that the outcome may hav been much different but I would have lied to see Jeff land a few times cleanly!!
Whomever his next opponent maybe, they better be prepared!!

Re: Jeff Lacy: “I am coming back to dominate”
Jeff Lacy is a forward fighting pressure fighter, but he is also a very methodical fighter. he adapts as the fight goes on. He paces himself early, then explodes later on. He has all the qualities to become a GREAT Fighter!
One thing i didnt agree with what lacy said was, He said he needs to have more gaps between his fights. why? James toney back in the days didnt have alot of rest between fights! if he has more years like 2004/2005 fight wise, then he could dominate for years to come, HE NEEDS TO STAY BUSY....NOT TWO FIGHTS A YEAR!

Re: Jeff Lacy: “I am coming back to dominate”
Jeff Lacy never needs to fight Joe Calzaghe again...EVER.
People that still believe Lacy can beat Calzaghe...well...then you need to see more Calzaghe fights.
Lacy bulls in constantly & that plays right into Calzaghe's game plan.
It amazes me how some peeps still under rate him after the beatdown he dished out.
Calzaghe's natural abilities are one step above Lacy's. Don't get me wrong...I'm a Lacy fan...but I'm a Calzaghe fan also...bottom line is that Joe is faster & shows more angles than just straight ahead & swinging for the fences.
Lacy needs to dominate on the back burner & wait on Joe to retire.

The thing about Calzaghe is that most American fans have not done their homework...if they had...Calzaghe would be as highly reveared as Hopkins, Jones, & Gatti were in their primes & hey-days.
Calzaghe is a master at work in the ring & it's a shame that my Yank brothers haven't branched out for him.

one problem there mr.whack......we dont get eurusport, sky, bbc or whatever channel he is fighting on. If talent like JC dosent come to the USA how are we supposed to know how good they are? Us unfortunate ones can come to sites like saddo and read about JC,Hatton and the like, BUT if we never see the guy live? So the blame can hardly be placed on the average fan in the USA. I think its more up to the boxer himself to make his name know WORLD WIDE. Im not placing blame , but facts are facts.

Re: Jeff Lacy: “I am coming back to dominate”
Offense or no offense, burnout or no burnout. Whether he could or could not throw punches didnt have anything to do with moving his head.
Lacy wants to truly "dominate" he needs to learn a jab and better defense.

There's an easy set of solutions to answer questions before they are asked about fighters that you don't know about...& you don't have to have USA/Brit access.
Dig deep in your wallet & buy career sets. If money is an issue...just download the fights, trade files, or get on ebay for bootlegs.
The blame isn't on the fan for being across the world...the blame is for passing judgement without proof or pudding.
I'm not placing blame either...but like you said...facts are facts.
I live in the U.S.A., but I don't close my eyes off to world issues or world fighters...if it's out there...seeing is believing.

Wacko, had about 15 Calzaghe fights on the comp at one time or another. Before the Lacy fight, everyone was talking about how Lacy was going to be thoroughly outboxed but I said the whole time it wouldn't be the case. Anytime Calzaghe gets tagged, or his blood gets to pumping, he stands in front of his guy. He stands right in front and...for a guy like Lacy that is a dream come true. Just couldn't capitalize.
Given the chance again, I think he has a chance to win and it's Calzaghe who would hand deliver that. He would have to be absolutely top notch but...he can walk through Joe's punches. The only thing is Calzaghe is so fast, it would be hard for Lacy to negate that speed.

He could dominate when Joe is gone...2 years might be enough...
