Who's Number 1? ESPN Counts Down the 20 Greatest Boxers of All Time
Anyone stateside with ESPN Classic, ESPN is counting down the 20 best boxers of the Marquis of Queensbury era tonight. Should be an interesting watch. I found myself disagreeing a lot with their top 20 greatest fights, but the way they support their arguments makes it worth the watch. Just a heads up. Until then...who do you think the P4P 20 greatest fighters are?

Re: Who's Number 1? Best Boxers
This is mine....
1. Ray Robinson
2. Muhammad Ali
3. Willie Pep
4. Henry Armstrong
5. Benny Leonard
6. Gene Tunney
7. Joe Louis
8. Stanley Ketchel
9. Lou Ambers
10. Archie Moore
11. Pernell Whitaker
12. Carlos Monzon
13. Alexis Arguello
14. Emile Griffith
15. Kid Chocolate
16. Ray Leonard
17. Roberto Duran
18. Jack Dempsey
19. Oscar De La Hoya
20. Julio Cesar Chavez
Not the best list and I'm sure it could use some fine tuning, bit of era-clumping in there but I like it. And as always, I will gladly defend each fighter's spot on the list.

cc.
i will be honest and admit i cant do a list of 20 as my knowledge of older boxers isnt that of most on here so i wont even try but i think maybe RJJ and Hopkins could squeeze in.

Jones I disagree on, but Hopkins could very well slide into 20-15, I would have him at about 21 ;)

:o Dear me amat? Is you crazy?? i mean alot of people are not fans of roy but he does slip easily into the top ten i mean, four weight division champion, and middle to heavy is a huge stretch over a career, he had skills and characteristics that had been unseen and thats what is all about baby he did it his own way. gotta disagree brother.

IMO, from the years 96 to 06, his career only had a couple high spots with a bunch of fights that should have been used to just keep busy instead of being main eventers. I mean, as spectacular as the guy was, he just didn't fight strong enough competition to be considered the greatest fighter of all time. It's a shame, but Roy never had that one career defining fight that set him head and shoulders above the other greats of his era, much less all time.

Grumbles, i sort of agree slighltly, But roy rocks my world so im not goner admit it.
but yeh some aspects of his career were slightly in need of promotion but that was more his stubborness of bieng his own manager etc.. i dont believe he ducked nobody, but i dont believe he really found the defining fight, but he certianly inspired and entertained millions on the way to where he is now!!
so what u reckon if he 'could' (not getting into another arguement that lasts forever about who would win) beat calzaghe would that be his defining fight
cos i'd take it!! lol

Re: Who's Number 1? Best Boxers
The beauty of these things is there is no right or wrong answers. But IMO there is a difference between being the 'Best' and being the 'Greatest'...
I have only ever done a Greatest list, here is my Top 20:
20 Bob Fitzsimmons
19 Stanley Ketchel
18 Harry Grebb
17 Ezzard Charles
16 Benny Leonard
15 Julio Cesar Chavez
14 Mickey Walker
13 Ray Leonard
12 Carlos Monzon
11 Muhammad Ali
10 Charley Burley
9 Archie Moore
8 Jimmy Wilde
7 Willie Pep
6 Sandy Sadler
5 Georges Carpentier
4 Roberto Duran
3 Sammy Langford
2 Henry Armstrong
1 Ray Robinson
The problem with ESPN doing it, is they are probably only ever going to list fighters they have footage of.
The likes of a Langford or Burley, who most serious historians would have in their top 20, are possibly not going to be listed...
I may being doing ESPN a disservice by making that assumption, but I doubt it.

CC. Completely agree, if it was the Best, RJJ would be in my top 20 no doubt. ESPN is doing a "Greatest" list. Let me change that.

i still believe if were talking greatest, that roy has earned his spot if only with his skill
just would have liked to see it beat more of the greater fighters of his generation. but stil
its my story and im sticking to it ;)

Re: Who's Number 1? ESPN Counts Down the 20 Greatest Boxers of All Time
I may sound stupid asking this but it's how I'll learn, what is the difference between greatest and best??Best as in your personal best and greatest as greatest for achievements/all time? CC's for the lists,I have not seen enough old fights to make 1 yet,but I know all the fighters you guys names so my knowlege is getting better!
-
Re: Who's Number 1? ESPN Counts Down the 20 Greatest Boxers of All Time
wasup el, i guess there really is no greatest its all based on opinion, what period your most fond of and what fighters influenced you personally whether inside the ring with theyr style, or whether they never ducked a man and always fought the best or what they did outside the ring aswell,i.e ali, or robinson ali filled all the criteria and was just so entertaining, and always fought the best, but a defininate must in all boxings greatest lists has to be robinson, becuase boxing would not be what it is today without him, he was a great in many ways always fought the best of his time, and he influenced all the other greatest fighters in history, i mean he influenced ali, who influenced roy jones, ray leonard, mike tyson bernard hopkins and all these were sugar ray robinson fans.
i would love to know who influenced sugar ray robinson to box!!:P

Best is more about a fighter's ability imo. RJJ was a gifted fighter, who had very few equals but never beat the competition that would make him as great as someone like Ray Robinson who was not only gifted, but beat the absolute best competition out there.

Re: Who's Number 1? ESPN Counts Down the 20 Greatest Boxers of All Time
to answer your question bro they had ALI as #1, their top 10 had Henry Armstrong, Jack Johnson, Jack Dempsey, Rocky Marciano, SRR. I believe SRR was # 2 on their list. they had RJJ like # 15. Holmes was #20. it was cool to see all the old school rare nostalgic footage especially of Jack Johnson, SRR, Marciano etc.
theres footage of ALI saying, "I am the greatest HW of all time!" but the greatest pound for pound was SRR". i was suprised to see that since ALI was such a cocky bastard, but i love him anyway ahahaha.

Re: Who's Number 1? ESPN Counts Down the 20 Greatest Boxers of All Time
WHAT!!!! :o
Are they crazy? or what?
Duran# 16 but RJJ# 15 thats the stupidest most insane shet! I have ever heard. (That and Naz is one of the greats) ;D
Dempsey #5
Marciano# 4
SRR# 3
Joe Louis# 2
Ali# 1
Who in the hell contributed to this list?

Re: Who's Number 1? ESPN Counts Down the 20 Greatest Boxers of All Time
i much enjoyed the historical element of it. they said that when Joe Louis fought Max Schmeling that it was all of america fighting Hitler hahaha. They said when Joe Louis KO'd Max it was like the US KO'ing Hitler in one round hahahaa. i love that nostalgic ishhhhh man.

Re: Who's Number 1? ESPN Counts Down the 20 Greatest Boxers of All Time
Thats bull!!! Where was Hopkins!?!?!?
-
Re: Who's Number 1? ESPN Counts Down the 20 Greatest Boxers of All Time
they did a similiar countdown of the best HW of all time. they had Joe Louis at #1 and ALi at #2. Bert Sugar thought Joe Louis would knock out ALi. then they had Holmes and that fat Latin HW that ALI fought cant remember his name at the moment both barking about how ALI would defeat Joe Louis with ease. Do to his speed and moves. O0

RE: Who's # 1 Ali anyday of the week. They got it right.
The List should be separated by weight class.
Either way Muhammed Ali is the Best.
If his mind was was right and he trained as if he respected you there was no one that was going to beat him.
He was 56-5 with 37 Knockouts.
His five losses, 2 were after being out of the ring for 2 years against a prime Larry Holmes and a not so bad Trevor Berbick and pushing 40 years of age.
One was playing with Leon Spinks for 15 rounds and still almost winning, a fight he avenged 7 months later,
another was having to fight the remainder of 12 rounds with a broken jaw against Ken Norton and still only losing a split decision, a fight he avenged twice,
and his first was after being out of action for 3 1/2 years, training lightly and taking a prime Joe Frazier lightly, and still going 15 rounds and putting Smokin' Joe in the Hospital, he avenged that fight twice as well.
No one has ever been as fast with his hands and lateral movement, as quick with their feet and as sharpe of mind on how to figure out their opponent or to get inside of their head, or able to take a punch as well to the head or to the body.
No way Ali ever loses the first fight to Frazier if he holds on to his title and continues to fight during that 3 1/2 years of his prime he lost in the late '60's.
He was 29-0 when they stripped him of his title and 31-0 when he fought Frazier. He would have been about 35-0 after he would have whipped Frazier by the time they met in the Spring of '71.
Ali recorded KO's of Sonny Liston, Floyd Patterson, Joe Frazier, and George Foreman.
He won the Heavyweight title three times and defended 19 times. 9 times after his first title win and 10 after his second title win.
If not stripped of his title he easily breaks Joe Louis' record for title defenses.
Like Louis he was the best fighter of two separate decades.
Zora Folley, who many were comparing to Joe Louis in style and approach, and who everyone at the time believed had the best chance of beating the much hated Muhammed Ali of the 1960's, said after he was knocked out by Ali, that Louis would not have stood a chance against Ali.
He said that Ali was just too fast and that he was too hard to try and hit, and the punch that knocked him, Folley, out, he never saw coming.

Actually it is a good question....I always consider the best a temporary thing,,,,one guy can be the best today EG Floyd Mayweather still undefeated...but a fight later a different guy could be because he one upped him...EG Pacquio beats Morales twice but all time greatest is a bit more thought into....I go by achievements over their whole career...do the top moments outweigh the bad...How have their accomplishmets as a whole add up not just a single part of their careers....EG Ali loses to Berbick...in a current situation that would drop him down in the P4P ranks because he lost to a low quality fighter but over his career...he beat guys like Liston, Frazier, Foreman, Folley, Patterson....Hope that helps a little

El Gamo...there's never a stupid question when you learn an answer.
Good assestment Daxx my man...but you made one fatal error & I highlighted it for you.
You must keep up with the Saddo tradition. You have to post it like this : Hope this helps.
It conveys the sarcasm of the veteran posters of yesteryear & also conveys a little bit of compasion by saying that you sincerly hope you helped...actually...it's more about the sarcasm. ;D
So...I hope that helped. Heh heh heh. ;)

I dont see how joe calzaghe will ever get in his best years are gone and he still taking on the like of a 'contender' tv average fighter in manfredo. Dont see jermaine taylor either getting there not in the top 20 no way or winky or pacquiou for that matter. ok hes good but beat two old fighters in MAB & EM with a de=raw against marquez soi that is'nt greatness and IMO he will never get in the top 20.

i said * if he gets right fights* but anyway it all depends if each of these guys get the right defining fights
