How many people on this site have ever boxed??????? (in real life)
Just asking coz a lot of blokes dont have a clue what they are on about and if they disagree with you, they just post childish bullshit.
I agree with James Toney on this,to really know boxing you have got to have put the gloves on and done a bit.

Re: How many people on this site have ever boxed??????? (in real life)
You need to have some real experience in the ring to understand it. And by real I don't meen sparred once or twice I meen trained for a decent stint... sparred a lot and competed a few times.
You can only learn so much from just watching, irrates my listening to commentators on HBO, the British ones are worse because they only occasionally do it when they are not commentating on football.

I have only done some spotty boxing & such. Thrown on the gloves & batted a few friends around & stuff of the such...even got into a bit of bare knuckling from time to time. Never done anything amatuer, training, or competitive like...honestly...I just never have had the time, funding. or competitive nature to get into it like I wanted.
Been in a lot more fights than I'd like to have in my time.

I think that you need it from both aspects really...to get the full grasp on it.
I mean, I love it...watch it...breath it...sleep it...but I just have never had the desire to be it.
There are a lot of "historians" out there that have never gotten into the ring but have a wealth of knowledge...more so than many fighters out there. They know the game from front to back. Inside & out...myself...I feel that after all my years of loving the sport & watching...that I have only hit the tip of the iceberg compared to many historians...but everyone see's boxing in a different way & uses it & feels it more so than others.
If that makes any sense.
Also...I'd like to add that...

yeah, gotta watch it too... wouldn't learn a lot from watching novice amatuers and beginners in my gym :P Some people get it more than others do... I'm amased that half the HBO commentry team gets work... suppose it's rare to have the voice and the brain, sort of like 'Handsome dan' on Wayne's World.
Know what you mean about 'Historians' a lot of people know a lot about boxers but not so much about boxing ;)
Some commentators could do with some in ring expereince to better understand the sport... some could do with some in ring expereince involving no headguards or gloves and them having their gloves tied behind their backs :P

Re: How many people on this site have ever boxed??????? (in real life)
ive trained for a year once but only sparred twice, fucked em both up good though.
never wanted to fight, i just enjoyed the training, and the circuits we would go thru
but i tend not to post bullshit about other ppls posts unless its gaggin for a piss take and i will only offer my views in the trainer section about fitness as i have a sports science HND and always make it clear i dont box
;)

Trust me...I honestly believe that some people slag off on Merchant a lot more than they should. He's annoying as fwock...but the guy does know boxing. There are times though that I would love to see one of those fighters crack him in the jaw one time.

Re: How many people on this site have ever boxed??????? (in real life)

What was it George said? "You dont KNOW boxing Larry, you just talk boxing" or words to that affect.
Ive boxed on and off since I was a kid, only competed as a kid. I know what its like to take a good hiding, I know what its like to really hurt another person and I know what it feels like to be out of your depth. In certain circumstances you should only really pass judgement if you have been there and done it.
Never pass judgement on a man until you have walked a mile in his shoes. That way when you judge him you are a mile away.......and you have his shoes ;D

Re: How many people on this site have ever boxed??????? (in real life)
I think if you have done a bit of boxing you can have a better idea on how styles blend togeather.
All along I picked Hatton to beat KT and Calzaghe to beat Lacy, but the amount of bullshit that was flying about on here by people who knew Fuck all really pissed me off.

yeah, cc
Because unless you have really boxed before and felt what is actually like, then you won't have no real clue what the boxer on the tv is going through

Re: How many people on this site have ever boxed??????? (in real life)
Watching a ring walk some times puts butterflys in my stomach... it's like watching your self, you know what they are going through but when you're doing the same thing you don't think of it like that.

Re: How many people on this site have ever boxed??????? (in real life)
I've boxed in the backyard with uncles and friends. I have learned from people who have been in and around the ring. I have too many anxiety issues to actually particpate in the sport. Also, I knew I would never be good enough to make a go of it and I don't like getting punched in the face for nothing.
When I was in high school I was organizing boxing matches. I got brave once and had two guys who hated each other boxing in the football field during school hours. I denied everything but since it was my 4 gloves they were using I went down.
Even if someone hasn't boxed, they know what it means to be threatened by a bully, or be in a fight.
Boxing is kinda like public speaking with punchs....
-
Re: How many people on this site have ever boxed??????? (in real life)
I did Taekwondo, Thai Boxing and then Boxing..boxing being my favourite one.
I never compete in the prorank, only in the amateur rank...trained and sparred with guys that were good pro. I think I was quite good on the physical side, but mentally not always at the best (doubting, frustration with weight, ...). but hey I was only an amateur.
I trained over a period of 15 years including 8 in pure boxing.
But if I have a better knowledge about boxing than those who never put the gloves for real ? I don't know...if Britkid never boxed, then I would be amazed, but yeah it's possible. Wacko knows about what he's talking, and he's not and never was a boxer.....so yeah I guess everything is possible.
What annoys me are comments like he's scared, he has no chin for some fighters who took incredible punishments, or people having no respect when a fighter is hurt. WHat people often don't understand is that sometimes you want a victory, you're ready to pay whatever the price is for that...
I mean, in these occasions, yes I think : hell they never put the gloves and tehy probably never have the courage to fight on a ring.
and yes, you can learn a lot by watching, I mean my american family explain me the football rules like they were Jhon madden Consultants teams...eventhough they never practiced it :-)

Re: How many people on this site have ever boxed??????? (in real life)
i have been in and out of the boxing gym since 2002. I have fallen in love with it. but i never had a proper trainer. Now im 16 and have a proper trainer. They say everything happens for a good reason, and im happy that i didnt box when i was 13 cos i have a better understanding of it now.
im also a huge fan of the support!!!
i got my first fight (unlicensed show) on saturday, cant wait.
im also gonna box amatuer this season, if god wills.

Re: How many people on this site have ever boxed??????? (in real life)
I have never boxed, never been in a fight, never even been close to being in a fight come to think of it.
But........................................
I love boxing I love the tactical side, I am impressed with the fitness and bravery, and of course the gambling opportunity.
I would definately not claim to be an expert, but as far as I know I haven't stepped too far out of bounds.
-
Re: How many people on this site have ever boxed??????? (in real life)
I had 23 fights with a record of 21-2 (17). But got hurt in my last fight in 72 a blood clot & never stepped back in the ring again.

Last time I talked with him he was preparing himself for some amateur championship to try and get in for the olympics.

Re: How many people on this site have ever boxed??????? (in real life)
My uncle taught me to box when I was 9. I liked it. But at that time I liked running the streets a little bit better. By the time I was 15 I had pretty much stopped going to the gym. I would always think about picking it back up and see how far I could go. But never did. Than at 18 I got shot 5 times and that pretty much ended that idea. That was like 10 years ago. In total I had 22 amateur fights. With a record of 17-2-3. I got a heavy bag and speed bags set up in my basement. And once in awhile I'll spar at the gym. But that's it. I should of dedicated myself to my boxing growing up. But I didn't. Nothing I can do about it now. But It's a good thing I got 3 young sons.

I dont think that has anything to do with whether or not people have experienced what its like to have boxed. Boxing forums, like any other, are full of know it alls (know nothings) and dick heads.
Some great boxers are terrible judges of fights and offer no insight at all when asked for their opinions where as some of the most respected "experts" have never fought in the ring.
I believe Enzo Calzaghe was just a fan when he first brought Joe to the gym and must of known something, where as for all James Toneys brilliance in the ring over the years his "expert" opinion on Calzaghe-Lacy was "Its a mismatch. Lacy is going to destroy that boy. He's too strong, he's a fighter - he's proved himself."

Re: How many people on this site have ever boxed??????? (in real life)
Im an open class amateur boxer. I fought in the gloves five years. Thinkin about turning pro next year
-
Re: How many people on this site have ever boxed??????? (in real life)
I boxed amateur for 12 years and also did martial arts (TaeKwondo) for about 7 years.
Always was and have been a fan of the sport and it's history as well.
That said, I will still have opinions that are wrong and may get out of my box about stuff unreasonably sometimes - nobody is perfect.
I do believe that some armchair fans who have never been hit in the face in front of lots of people, or put in the real dedication and sweat, cannot always know what it is like. They would not be particularly qualified to talk about that. Someone was has watched a few fights, farted around in their back yard or read a book or two (!) would not suddenly be able to actually box properly.
BUT their opinion on who was better than who, or who won what fight, or who their favourite fighters are etc etc is worth at least as much as mine is! I think this is a web site for fans and opinionated people, not active fighters? If only boxers and ex-boxers were allowed to talk about boxing, it would be even more of a minority sport than it is now.
The more people who are interested in this great sport, the better - they don't all need to be able to actually do it!
Anyway, that's my four'pennorth

Re: How many people on this site have ever boxed??????? (in real life)
So far I am only 6 in 0 (1 by tko) and won a national amateur championship and have boxed in two different countries. I was also picked to represent the South African intercolligient all star team but that was shattered when my professor cut my National Geographic bursery after I argued that what he was promoting as proof of evolution was actually phenotypic platicity.
I have also sparred against a number of professionals got knocked down a lot didn't do so well but never quit thank the Lord.
