Former heavyweight champion, 40, to train at Aladdin for series of exhibition bouts

Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson has no plans to return as an active boxer, but will fight a series of up to 10 exhibition matches in the next several months, sources close to Tyson said Friday.

Tyson, 40, will train for those bouts at the Aladdin. The source said a ring will be set up in the casino and Tyson will work out in a public area for an hour a day.

An Aladdin spokesperson said talks are ongoing and declined further comment.

Tyson, who is staying at the Aladdin, could not be reached for comment. But multiple sources said he will have a news conference next week in Las Vegas to discuss the venture.

Tyson is expected to box an exhibition on a Pride Fighting Championship mixed martial arts card, though the date and site are not determined. Pride has a card scheduled for the Thomas & Mack Center on Oct. 21, though Tyson reportedly will not fight on that show.

However, Tyson, who has not competed since June 11, 2005, when he quit on his stool after the sixth round against journeyman Kevin McBride, isn't planning to join Pride.

Tyson, who at age 20 in 1986 became the youngest man to win the heavyweight title, has long been a fan of mixed martial arts. He was the guest referee on a card in Manchester, England, on March 18, though the bout lasted about a minute.

Asked by ring announcer Bas Rutten, a former Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight champion, whether he would fight again, Tyson said no.

"My fighting days are over, but I love and enjoy watching cagefighting, though," Tyson told Rutten.

Tyson served as a color analyst on the international feed of the WBC heavyweight title fight between Hasim Rahman and Oleg Maskaev on Aug. 12 at the Thomas & Mack Center.

That deal, which reportedly paid Tyson $20,000, was arranged by the Los Angeles-based Sports Placement Service. Harlan J. Werner, its president and CEO, could not be reached Friday.

Tyson was 50-6 with 44 knockouts as a pro, but was 5-5 with two no-contests in his final 12 bouts. He ended his career by losing two in a row and three of four.

Yea, right. This is just the start of Tyson getting ready again, then one day he wants to fight Evander again. :)

Liddel has never ever faced a guy who can punch as hard as Tyson (one of the biggest punchers of all time), and remeber there is hardly any padding on those gloves, so Tyson can easily fuck him up if he lands.
But Liddel can take him to the floor though and do those leg kicks to keep mike away, Mike is washed up now so he dosen't stand a chance....but he'd have a better one in his prime.

I don't think I even need to justify it, just look at the participants. UFC is for part timers who arn't good enough to go in to professional sport, so they 'play' fighting at weekends on UFC bouts.

The UFC is kind of sporting equivalent of the National Guard or Territorial Army, where a bunch of shop keepers, office workers, pizza delivery boys etc go to think they are part of the army.

But it's just my opinion so don't sweat it. If you like it, thats great ;)

MMA aren't boxers, why would anyone expect them to be able to punch like tyson.
not even all boxers have perfected every one of their punches (sraight, left and right hook, uppercut)
i mean compare the amount of tools there are in boxing compared to MMA
if a boxer can't perfect all the punches why would you expect a MMA to be a perfect puncher plus perfect all of their kicks and grapples.
and on top of that, there's more defense involved in MMA.
the speed of a punch is also much much faster in MMA than in boxing.

i do agree that there are alot of taxi drivers in the UFC, but there's also alot of elite fighters that people don't know about because the sport is still fairly new that will inevitably blow up and have all the haters on the bandwagon.
it sure as hell beats the talent pool in the heavyweight boxing division which is "a professional sport" hahaha

I appreciate what they do, but I don't think that there are many talented athletes involved in MMA... You would find vastly better skills in individual martial arts, of which boxing is one.......

It's great if you enjoy it thats the main thing. And the greatest thing about it is if you really like it, work out a couple times a week, maybe join a martial arts class and within a couple months you could in there fighting.

It's a hobby for thugs not a real sport. Don't be offended, but equally don't force people here on a boxing forum to appreciate it.

I do watch it sometimes but I view it with same level of respect that I do watching World Wildest Street Brawls or Bumfights.

Don't misunderstand me jtrock I do agree that their is trememdous skill in all martial arts, but the UFC is a bastardisation of all of them. It was clearly invented by a group of young producers and media moguls who wanted to make some quick and easy money cashing on the craze for WWF Wrestling in the US.

It's not a proper sport I don't care what anyone says.

Now proper martial arts on the other hand I agree is very skilful.

Now please excuse my ignorance of MMA versus UFC etc as I really don't know the difference.

All I am talking about is whatever sport it is that has Chuck Lidell as world champ and Tank Abbot as a big star. That is what I am talking about.

If there is a MMA sport seperate from this then I am not passing judgement as I just don't know enough about it but Chuck Lidell is not a professional sportsman.
