Was it necessary for Trinidad to retire? Or were the fans a bit harsh?
I don't know what is it about many boxing fans that whenever a boxer looses they go "Oh, he should retire". Take for example Sugar Shane Mosley. When he lost twice to Vernon Forrest I could hear that he was done, he should retire, etc. But look at him now. Sure, boxers age and are not the same as they were a few years back but still Mosley has shown he is still competitive out there and is now setting his eyes on Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Now when it comes Trinidad, well, sure, Wright did his homework and even though he didn't really punish Trinidad he fought a smart defensive fight that earned him enough points to win a nice decision. Lots of people commented on him retiring and being finished but I don't think its that bad. I can still see Trinidad being competitive. He can still pack a punch!

Re: Was it necessary for Trinidad to retire? Or were the fans a bit harsh?
Wright didn't fight "a smart, defensive fight" that allowed him to get "enough points" for a win. He thoroughly dominated and humiliated Tito, landed about a billion jabs flush, and won ever round by a landslide.
Tito was slippin since getting beat up by Hopkins. It's best he's retired.

Re: Was it necessary for Trinidad to retire? Or were the fans a bit harsh?
Chino,
Let it go brother. Trinidad doesn't want it anymore. Simple as that.

Re: Was it necessary for Trinidad to retire? Or were the fans a bit harsh?
I loved Tito but I think he made a mistake moving up in weight in the first place. He wasn't ready for those big boys and look how he is missing out now,he could still be around and be a big player at 147 :'( He would KTFO most of the guys there now!! I tell you something,I was SO surprised during the Winky fight,I am a big Winky fan but I thought Tito was going to give him a good ole thrashing, boy was I wrong!!
A sitting target plus Tito's absolutely banging banging power equals KO usually, didn't that night! I don't understand why he did not let his hands go more!
-
Re: Was it necessary for Trinidad to retire? Or were the fans a bit harsh?
I just think the Wright fight was the wrong fight stylistically for Tito after so long away .
The war with Mayorga was no prep for a slickster and I think Oscar realised this when he pulled out of his September date with Floyd .
If Tito were to come back , i wouldnt write him off cuz he can bang and shows heart
-
Re: Was it necessary for Trinidad to retire? Or were the fans a bit harsh?
Tito still had the skills and the natural given power after he lost to b-hop, but i feel like he didn't have it in him to dominate any more, i mean he fought another fight , retired, came back and i was so glad he beat mayorga because it was a brilliant fight, but winky had the plan down, i jus think its best he retired after two losses, its fair n he already had a great career, but he was too proud to suffer any more defeats.
-
Re: Was it necessary for Trinidad to retire? Or were the fans a bit harsh?
It's usually the announcers that suggest retirement once someone loses. I don't think that Tito was past it, just not as hungry anymore. He could definitely be competetive still, but why if you don't need the money, and your not really into it.

ye i feel you man , but its like he waqs hungry to go out on a win and on a high, and if he hada beaten winky he would have got a title shot cos it was a title eliminator! but like lennox lewis said, i dont feel i need to go back to boxing becuase i retired on top, undisputed, and so i dont have that hunger, never enjoyed watching lennox but i respect him for his whit!

Trinidad was one dimension, going forward and if you were a boxer(we aren't talking about a shot Pernell Whitaker) and not a risk taker he struggled to a degree, he never fixed any of his weaknesses and got beaten the same way twice by two boxers who weren't risk takers ;)

Re: Was it necessary for Trinidad to retire? Or were the fans a bit harsh?
>:mad please don't diss Tito, he was an ultimate showman, he was so exciting to watch, fearless, determined and is an all time great IMO. But he should keep those gloves hung up.
And being one dimensional isn't always a bad thing.

Re: Was it necessary for Trinidad to retire? Or were the fans a bit harsh?
:D ;D I keep reading this one dimensional crap and always reply with same. For a guy been onedimensional as some of you say. he kick everybody's but from 154 down and some 160 fighters.
So I don't give a damn of what you say been clear as water that you are just a TITO hater, HE was the MAN the champ the real feared guy (hehe skinny baby face) who destroyed prime VArgas and others yes Bhop beat him and it took 12 rounds, a push and his dad to stop the fight.
In the local papers here in PR there was an article of him enjoing life with his family with around $90 mil ,young and good health and doesn't give a crap of what ever you said.
AAANNNNDDDD HE he will be a Hall of Famer

Re: Was it necessary for Trinidad to retire? Or were the fans a bit harsh?
Shza,
The thing is that Wright is not known for his punching power so that is what I tried to say :). The guy connected his jabs and did his homework to lead him to a nice victory.
People said exactly the same about Mosley when he lost against Forrest...TWICE! And now look at him. Now people talk about his next fight, maybe facing Mayweather, blah blah blah. People can come back after a loss, that's all.
Its not just Trinidad, I am just saying that when someone losses most of the time we are quick to say "Oh, he should retire" when maybe they still have something left.
Cheers!
Chino

I thought he lost to Oscar at 47

Re: Was it necessary for Trinidad to retire? Or were the fans a bit harsh?
He may very well have been 1 dimensional but he mastered that dimension to such a degree that he was still able to KO everyone/almost everyone. Yeah Oscar may have been wining, but open the record books and it'll say Tito won! Oscar got hurt somewhere, became apprehensive and ran like a bitch for the rest of the fight.

Yea I don't think that he would have listened to his corner if it hadn't been fro the left hook to the body Trinidad hit him with. I do think Trinidad would have never lost if he had defense a jab and better head movement and the ability to fight going backwards.

That's the thing, against Mayorga,he had head movement,a great jab and ACTUALLY went to the body!!! I was soooo dissappointed with the Winky fight, against RiCArdo,he showed potential!

yeah that was ruff. i hated seeing Winky kick Tito's ass every round. I was like , what in the F#$@ happend.

I think he showed good head movement because of the way Mayorga throws, and a great jab because Mayorga had none. I think the main reason he looked so good and defensive against Mayorga was because..he was fighting Mayorga :( If he had looked like that against the upperclass like Hopkins Oscar and Wright he may be undefeated, well, nobody was beating Hopkins that night but at least he would have made those fights closer and not so one sided.
At least when he got beaten it would be close fights but the sad thing I have to face is that everytime he lost it was a washout :'(

Re: Was it necessary for Trinidad to retire? Or were the fans a bit harsh?
My bad dude I read your post at a bad moment I was kind of shakey not being your fault. The bad thing is tha PR is more expensive than the states because of tax and others stuff that are politicians fault, the article I was talking about Tito said that he had clean $90 mil
-
Re: Was it necessary for Trinidad to retire? Or were the fans a bit harsh?
Tito needs to stay retired...YES. Without a doubt.
There is a time & a place for everything...Tito's time was years ago.
There are too many actual boxers...technical fighters in the game right now...especially at or around Tito's weight class. Tito just can't withstand a boxer with a good D & a game plan.
Stay retired, get fat, wax that ass. Easy assignment.
I agree with means...if you can't beat the elite then there is no reason to compete.

no way no how would Tito be able to make 147 now and be effective, 154 yea, and him and the Golden Boy again would rule the division, but yea Tito didn't really lose cause Wright fought the best fight of his life, he lost cause he fought one of the worst fights of his career, he wasn't the old Trinidad that would go in with a gameplan and if something in his gameplan didn't work he would addapt and then adjust, but yea he went in with tunnel vision and did the same thing over and over, Trinidad does have the tools to beat the Wright that fought him that night, he is physically the stonger guy, if he would have fought a Cotto/Branco style fight, Wright wouldn't of been able to take all that contact, look at Winky's face after the fight, his eyes were swelled up and he didn't even really take a clean punch upstairs, also Trinidad believe it or not probably could still be a big player at 160, everybody knows he could easily become once again WBA champion, cause c'mon how the hell would he not be able to beat Castillejo, and the way that Edison Miranda Fights lends himself perfectly to Trinidad, he's the better boxer and would beat him like he beat Mayorga, and the that Taylor has been fighting lately, he's just been completely careless, and if he goes into a brawl with Tito I think that Trinidad could very well spark him, but yea that's only if he's completely devoted to the fight game again, and by the looks of it i doubt it very much

Re: Was it necessary for Trinidad to retire? Or were the fans a bit harsh?
I wonder if Mayweather losses... :o...if people will say the same "Oh, he should retire" just like anybody who losses ::**.
People can come back from losses.

look at what's going on with Morales, everybody is acting like if he's finished, and if you watch the rematch it's far from the truth, he was very effective early i had him winning the first 5 rounds straight, then stamina kicked in and yea, but he is still top game

No no,I was speaking hypothetically about Tito being around now.I think he should relax, stay retired, enjoy life,he's a legend.

Are YOU still around?!? Boy, they let ANYONE in here. You're an ignorant little punk who knows sh*t about boxing. Tito "took an a**whoopin every time he fought someone at the top of their game"?!? Are you really that ignorant? Or do you just fake it real good? Want me to rattle them off? Campas was at the top of his game. Oba Carr was at the top of his game. Vargas was at the top of his game. Then Tito moved up to 160 and polished off a very respectable Joppy, something DLH was never able to do.
By the way, here's a sad click (SC) for your ignorance.
-
Re: Was it necessary for Trinidad to retire? Or were the fans a bit harsh?
Tito is a legend that defines one dimension but he didn't let it deter him from being a great fighter.
Trinidad fought some great fighters, and fortunately they all possessed a style that fell into his hands at that time. But he was shown to not be invincible against the golden boy, but I actually wanted Trinidad to win that fight, and I was happy he did but I don't know if he "won" now.. but I'm happy that he got the decision ;)
When Trinidad fought the outside fighters like Hopkins and DLH he got shown in different fashions. Even Joppy was giving him trouble before Tito landed that big left hook(s).
What I can't stand is that when he loses people are saying he wasn't a true 160 pounder and etc.
If I remember correctly when he was 160 and beat Joppy everyone was jumping on his bandwagon saying he would even conquer Light Heavyweight, right?
But when Hopkins beats him its "because" Trinidad is really a 147 pounder.
So he just "happened" to knock out 154 and 160 pound fighters by chance?
If you give Trinidad's opponents credit for beating him I don't think you'r get the flack you get.
He IS a great fighter. But eventually that flaw of his came back to haunt him when the opponent didn't let a punch landed.
But you have GOT to give Trinidad credit for it taking that long to happen.

Trinidad hasn't fought in the U.S. since Wright starched him...unless he's been sparring in PR...he hasn't fought period.

It's all mental.
Tito has the goods. He is by no means over the hill. He could still come back.
Should he of retired? No. Taken a break and done somethings to make him hungry again yes.

Re: Was it necessary for Trinidad to retire? Or were the fans a bit harsh?
Trinidad wasn't one dimensional at first, he would adapt quite nicely to each and everyone of his opponants, he beat highly skilled BOXERS and would strategically break them down, he was no ONE dimensional fighter like Tyson, Lacy, or Mayorga
