Serguei Lyakhovich vs. Shannon Briggs...Who wins and winner should fight Valuev!
When Serguei wins and how does he win? And if Valuev wins on October 7th against Monte Barrett they should fight and who would win the fight between serguei and Valuev?
-
Re: Serguei Lyakhovich vs. Shannon Briggs...Who wins and winner should fight Val
I'm not convinced that Serguei will win the fight against Briggs for a start, Briggs is quite a bit bigger than him and has a fair punch, so if it does end early, I reckon that it will go to Briggs. However, Lyakovich will have to do what Maskaev did if he wants to win, if he covers up and hangs on for the first 6 or 7, dodges the big hits, has the stamina, and doesn't leave his chin too open, then as Briggs tires, as a man of his size inevitably will, then Serguei tees off and starts to knock him about. It's a closer fight than you think fan4life, and I'm gonna drop on the side of Briggs, cause he does have the big size and reach difference.
As for Valuev, I think they both could do pretty well against him, but the Russian giant would beat both of them in my view. He has better conditioning and stamina than Briggs, and Lyakovich would find it impossible to get past his big arms and guard.

Re: Serguei Lyakhovich vs. Shannon Briggs...Who wins and winner should fight Valuev!
I think that Shannon will put a hurtin' on him & win by UD or late TKO
-
Re: Serguei Lyakhovich vs. Shannon Briggs...Who wins and winner should fight Valuev!
Briggs might do well early but Sergei can take it and he has stamina

I agree that he has great stamina but lacks the type of skill that Briggs possesses & that will be his downfall! I think that many disregard Briggs
-
Re: Serguei Lyakhovich vs. Shannon Briggs...Who wins and winner should fight Valuev!
Because he hasn't fought anyone good for a LOOOOOOONG time

I ain't put my money either way at the moment....we have all that wonderful trash-talking and general shenanigans of a build up to look forward to for that!
-
Re: Serguei Lyakhovich vs. Shannon Briggs...Who wins and winner should fight Val
I'd have to go with Briggs just because he has been on the big stage more than Sergei. Further, Sergei won the title from a very
unpredictable Brewster. I don't know what kind of a chin Sergie has, but that will play a big role in the fight. Shannon's chin isn't
all that great, but he has a wonderful jab and a great, powerfull right hand.

Re: Serguei Lyakhovich vs. Shannon Briggs...Who wins and winner should fight Valuev!
The question is "can Briggs sustain an attack for 12 rounds"?
We all know Sergei can

Re: Serguei Lyakhovich vs. Shannon Briggs...Who wins and winner should fight Valuev!
Lyakhovich will domiate Briggs unless Briggs is a totally different fighter from what he was in the past like when he got a gift decision over Forman.
Although I would really like to see Valuev go far I doubt he will beat Barrette unless he gets another gift in Germany.

Valuev is much better than you think. He is serious and impossible to stop.
-
Re: Serguei Lyakhovich vs. Shannon Briggs...Who wins and winner should fight Val
I would take Shannon Briggs to stop Lyakhovich late around the 8th.
-
Re: Serguei Lyakhovich vs. Shannon Briggs...Who wins and winner should fight Valuev!
This should be a very evely matched fight...Briggs is the classic underachiever that seems to have little heart or stamina(He says asthma, Atlas says heart)....Generally Briggs fights tenatively against people he thinks can hurt him, I agree with Atlas...Lyakhovich is really just a little above average as far as a fighter goes, squeeking by Brewster, Guinn and being stopped by Maurice Harris hardly makes him a dominating fighter...Personally I don't think Lyakhovich moves well enough to avoid Briggs power and Shannon will KO him inside of 6 rounds...
-
Re: Serguei Lyakhovich vs. Shannon Briggs...Who wins and winner should fight Valuev!
I'm just not that impressed with Lyakhovich...not that impressed with Briggs either...but I think that Briggs will over power him down the stretch.
Briggs is a lot more imposing than Brewster.

That is by far the most ridiculous post EVER!
-
Re: Serguei Lyakhovich vs. Shannon Briggs...Who wins and winner should fight Valuev!
If Briggs can come in under 250 he has a good chance, otherwise its Sergei by ud or late KO.
-
Re: Serguei Lyakhovich vs. Shannon Briggs...Who wins and winner should fight Valuev!
Sergei doesn't have any punching power to speak of the last time he KO'd someone was in 2004 and that was Ron Guerrero

Cmon Lyle, let's not get silly about this, the first part of that post is probably accurate. I would say that around 2/3 of people on this board are writing off Nikolay Valuev as a freakshow who beat some joke fighter to win his title. If that is not underestimating him, then what is? Have you seen his face, he is certainly VERY serious. And when he smiles, then that is the scariest thing of all. :p And about the impossible to stop comment, it ain't happened yet, but when he steps up in class, that is when we will see.
-
Re: Serguei Lyakhovich vs. Shannon Briggs...Who wins and winner should fight Valuev!
And he has fought and LEGITIMATELY beaten WHO to make him such a great fighter?
Ruiz and Donald got jobbed!!!
Beck was KO'd by fucking Monte Barrett who oddly enough is the next opponent for that BUM!
Yes Valuev is a bum he hasn't fought anyone ranked, anyone dangerous, and anyone worth a damn! POWER, no he doesn't have power WLADIMIR KLITSCHKO has power, DAVID TUA has power, Valuev cannot hit that hard for a guy his size
-
Re: Serguei Lyakhovich vs. Shannon Briggs...Who wins and winner should fight Val
Are you sure you werent't watching those fights through red, white and blue tinted sunglasses my friend? I didn't see Ruiz winning that fight, and no, I didn't really care who won, but I thought Valuev edged it. Not seen the fight with Larry Donald, but will search it out and see what it was like.
As for Monte Barrett, it will give Valuev time to settle in the states, get used to fighting in a different environment, and then, in the spring, we can have a nice unification fight with one of the other champs.
And as for power, he may not have it in proportion to his size, but when he is that size, his power is still greater than many of the others in the division, and I think that he might surprise a few people (even if you won't admit it, mate ;))
And if he loses, I'll put the oven for some humble pie.

Hi Lyle! No i think you are operating with very high standards. Vidoz, Ruiz and Donald are all good, not reat but solid. And he was not clearly beaten by them. Let me now give you an argument for taking valuev (Val) seriously.
a) He is improving with each fight. This is something all agree with.
b) He does not have the hardest neatest punch, rather often a clubbing ugly thing. But he also has a decent jab.
Now power. Beyond doubt in some sense he has the most power of -basically any athlete.
c) His chin seems to be 100%.
d) He does not get tired and he doesnt quit.
e) He has picked up on the tall man-grab-jab-lean-push style of late VK and WK (and ol Foreman).
f) Everytime a fighter stop, EVERYTIME, fighting cute and try to bring it to Valuev; he wakes up and knocks them out. (Proof: Levin, Beck, etc.)
Conclusion: Valuev is not a much easier target than Maskaev, Lyakovich etc. I am not saying that he could beat Klitschko (man how I miss Vitaly: remember how he just kept getting more cocky? Ha; how he handled Kirk Johnson and Williams... wow. Amazing this young man waling around trying to be a politician and he could spank his little brother with his left hand.) but he is a legitimate boxer. And very much underestimated.

Re: Serguei Lyakhovich vs. Shannon Briggs...Who wins and winner should fight Valuev!
Levin and Beck are bums!
Valuev might be a decent heavyweight but jesus when will he fight guys that DESERVE title shots??? What the fuck has Monte Barrett done since losing to Rahman?
I don't take Valuev for real because he hasn't done anything legit. Wlad TKO'd Chris Byrd, he decisioned Sam Peter, and he flattened Monte Barrett faster than Valuev will!
Honestly if Monte comes to fight he could pull the upset off
Valuev and Maskaev are the weakest title holders out there, Lyakhovich isn't that far ahead...Wlad is CLEARLY the best

Hi Lyle,
A) I think you are being ungenerous to Levin and Beck, but ok they are not a level, still they are in shape prize fighters and they would expose a complete fraud. ok? Ruiz and Donald are good. Ok? They just barely beat Valuev arguably. So valuev is on their level at least. And that is enough to make him a respectable fighter.
b) You are right to think that Valuev has not faced the toughest opposition he would be able to deal with. But is that not to accept that he is not a joke but actually capable of more than he has done so far?
c) As you know every observer says that Valuev is getting better all the time.
And this said Vitaly is the HW God, (Im in denial) WK is the greatest and will be for a long time. He already beat the hardest guy in Peter. There is no a huge gap between Wlad and the rest. I love MAskaev for his guts and perseverance and human qualitites, but he is too slow for Wlad. (He beats him 1 in 10 bc early TKO) Lyakovich is good but not ready for WK and will never be. Valuev is too slow for WK. Toney is too small. Thats it you are right.
a)

Re: Serguei Lyakhovich vs. Shannon Briggs...Who wins and winner should fight Valuev!
a) No Beck and Levin are frauds, they don't expose them! Donald and Ruiz don't hit hard enough to KO anyone who is decent, but that doesn't mean Valuev is good because of that.
b) If he's not pushing to fight better guys he's a joke and will remain so until I am proven otherwise
c) Yeah but I expect he should have SOME difficulty with Monte Barrett, I don't see him KO-ing him. Monte really comes through late in the fight and Valuev better be WAAAAAAY ahead on the cards when it gets around the 8th round.
-

Hi !
Ok but its not all about knocking someone out. Anyhow. Let Barret be the test. If Valuev beats Barret then he is not bad. ? ok? I just think that going even against Donald and Ruiz is enough to show that you are ok, even good.

Re: Serguei Lyakhovich vs. Shannon Briggs...Who wins and winner should fight Valuev!
YES it is about knocking someone out or at LEAST winning convincingly
No Barrett is on the same level as Larry Donald he just has a bit more pop...and when you take into account he has been out of the ring for a YEAR then he's just not worth it...how does he get a title shot and guys like....
1. John Ruiz
2. Ruslan Chagaev
3. Calvin Brock
4. James Toney
5. Ray Austin
6. Sultan Ibragimov
7. Larry Donald
8. Shannon Briggs
9. Davaryll Williamson
10. Monte Barrett
11. Samuel Peter
12. Lamon Brewster
13. Wladimir Virchis
14. Donnell Homes
15. Taras Bidenko
have to wait

Re: Serguei Lyakhovich vs. Shannon Briggs...Who wins and winner should fight Valuev!
Hi everybody,
I think that everyone's underestimating Lyakhovich a bit, just a question: when was the last time, against a respectable fighter, that Briggs looked even remotely good?
-
Re: Serguei Lyakhovich vs. Shannon Briggs...Who wins and winner should fight Valuev!
Briggs has to come into the bout in shape and ready to go 12 rounds. If not he has to catch him early or Lyakhovich will get a late (T)KO or UD. At the weight Briggs has been at I cant see him lasting a full fight.
-
Re: Serguei Lyakhovich vs. Shannon Briggs...Who wins and winner should fight Valuev!
Sergei won't stop him...he doesn't hit hard enough
-
Re: Serguei Lyakhovich vs. Shannon Briggs...Who wins and winner should fight Val
Ok back on topic I see Sergia knocking out Briggs in the later rounds. He took everything that Brewster threw at him, and Brewster probably hits harder than anybody other than Peter.
He did take a knockdown but it was an intelligent decision to drop to one knee to get some breathing space.
He'll work Briggs at too high a pace and he will have run out of gas by about the 8th or 9th round. I think it's a pretty straightforward win for Sergia.
Valuev we just don't know yet. I'm hoping he's good because he will certainly be a talking point in the division.

sergie wins. In any case despite its problems GOOD THING IN HW BOXING IS THAT THE FIGHTS ARE EVEN ENOUGH NORMALLY.

Re: Serguei Lyakhovich vs. Shannon Briggs...Who wins and winner should fight Valuev!
Very true...which is why I say the division is not bad it's just very competitive as opposed to the Tyson era where X, Y, and Z fighters could win all day long in the end they would still have to fight Tyson and get bludgeoned.
Now'a'days you never know who could win

Re: Serguei Lyakhovich vs. Shannon Briggs...Who wins and winner should fight Valuev!
briggs by KO in 4-th round... cant see serge survive 4 rounds, briggs just too strong and experienced! lights out for sergei

You are right he doesnt have enough power to stop him, but with Briggs's stamina issues he would run out of gas and Sergei would get the stop that way.

Re: Serguei Lyakhovich vs. Shannon Briggs...Who wins and winner should fight Valuev!
The thing with Briggs is that he has not had to be on his "A game" lately...he has been plowing through bums faster than Nicolay Valuev.
Briggs has 1 punch KO power and I can see him knocking Sergei down but I don't think he can put him away.

True...I didn't think of that
