Why Exactly Did Tito move up to 160lbs?
And then stay there?! :-\
Even after his 1st retirement... Why did Tito come back to 160lbs?
Was it weight issues? Money? High Profile fights? ???
I dont really understand why Tito moved from 154 so soon? As Chino said in a previous thread, Look at the division now. Tito surely still has some fire left... There's still a job to be done.

i was thinking that myself, because tito retired twice and was still young both times, and he could clear up if he were in top shape, but its best he stay retired and enjoys his money because he never intended to be defeated by hopkins in the first place and wasnt the same after then when he fought winky and lost again he was right to call it a day,
i dont believe he needs to add anything to his legacy so best off keeping it safe!

Re: Why Exactly Did Tito move up to 160lbs?
Tito could well have stayed at 154 for the rest of his career....and he would have been near unbeatable....
There were big fights to be made at 160 though, and you cant blame a man for wanting to challenge himself...

too true,
and plus he was undefeated up to the point when he destroyed joppy which gave him a false sense of security about his power at middleweight, i feel like he was a natural middleweight, but was tearing up the welter and light middle divisions, before he became a so so middle wieght,
i think to myself i wouldnt have wanted him back at any other division because i LOVED the mayorga fight, but come to think of it, he could have fought at welter where mayorga was before, and stil could have won and not have taken the fight with winky and carried on a fair while longer.
but to cockey cockney!! i think he made 8 mil to fight with mayorga on his comeback!! and probably more for winky! those fights were true crowd pleasers because tito was SOOO popular he puts butts in seats man :P

Banger, you make a very good point about Tito's false sense of security at 160 after destroying Joppy. It was his first fight at that weight and he was riding a wave of support and popularity. Don King had put together this middleweight "tournament" and I guess Tito thought he'd walk through all comers and move up to light heavy. He found out the hard way that 160 wasn't his best or ideal weight.

if tito came back, oscar and mosely would have a field day on him at 154
im not saying they would have many years ago (even though i thought oscar won the first) but hes been inactive too long, and the way he went out against winky wright is very hard to recover from, imo (pretty humiliating loss)

Re: Why Exactly Did Tito move up to 160lbs?
I think he had Roy Jones in the back of his mind for a while(possibly back when he was only a welterweight) and realized in order to get that fight he'd have to work his way up towards at least 168.

Re: Why Exactly Did Tito move up to 160lbs?
there weren't any fights to be had at 154 except the rematch with De La Hoya, everything else was just pointless, he could build on his legacy by adding yet another world title and then try to become undisputed

Mosely, yeah maybe. Oscar.... definitely NOT. You forget... Oscar's gotten fat and happy too. He's also got an ego bigger than his wallet. In a rematch with Tito he'd try to make up for his shameful running in the first fight. Big mistake.....

Not Oscar, not Ouma, not Quartey, not Mosley ;)
What happened to all the "Trinidad will beat Roy Jones Jr one day" talk that was floating around aftert he Joppy fight ::** I guess everyone expected Hopkins to fight Trinidad as if Trinidad was 154 pounds. Hindsight is fun..but when just about everyone was saying that Trinidad would knock out Hopkins and be the rightful owner of the Sugar Ray Robinson trophy.. they were practically preparing the parade for him!! Then Hopkins beats him and its "Why did Trinidad go to 160" ::** May as well say "Why did Roy go back down to LightHeavyweight, everyone knows he wasn't the same when he did.." But instead its "Roy is an overrated who got knocked out by Tarver and Johnson" meanwhile Trinidad gets the "too brave for his own good" speech? ::**

Honestly, for someone who professes to be unbiased and supposedly doesn't dislike Tito, you sure spend a lot of time hating on him.
The surefire sign of a hater is someone who always spouts the same sh*t over and over and over and over again (ad nauseum). It's like you have nothing else to dump on the guy. Ten years from now, you'll be talking the same sh*t about Tito being one-dimensional, Tito being undeserving, blah, blah, blah, blah.
Don't worry, tho. I'm always more than happy to set you straight.

Seems very similar to a nuthugger who sprouts the same stuff about a fighter and ridicules anyone who doesn't agree.

sorry sweetcheeks tito would drop quartey and ouma without a second thought. no disrespect to the dream!! i love the guy, but F*ck quartey, i believe hed beat oscar and mosely would be a great fight i'd still put my money on prime tito, n probably stil would now.
other points( not trying to be orrible jus mentionin!)
all the fans were talking of rjj-tito long before joppy, there was like two roy jones your next banners at either the oscar fight or the vargas fight!
i agree with you for the roy jones part definately!! you know the score! he should have definately stayed at heavyweight, and there were great fights for roy at the time!
and the trinidad thing was a false sense of security with joppy bieng a mediocre warm up so to speak for a big middleweight unification bout, also tito just has awsome technique in his punches that contributes to his power and also there was some conroversy of how tito had wrapped his hands during to joopy fight... long story cut short, tito should have stayed at light middle!! ;)
-
Re: Why Exactly Did Tito move up to 160lbs?
Yeah Trinidad went to middleweight on his way to Jones Jr, the plan wasn't to fight Hopkins originally as Papa Trinidad & King were saying they considered Joppy the best middleweight. But there was no avoiding Hopkins & that's where one of the biggest possible super fights ended! While Trinidad was in retirement he was huge getting down to 160 for Mayorga was probably an effort, the the Wright fight was for big $$$. That's why I think he stayed around at 160. Maybe if he was successful with Wright he may have had a rematch with Hopkins in the back of his mind as well.

Even if he would have stayed at 154 he would have had to deal with Wright, Wright was the undisputed jr middleweight champ and it was he who moved up to fight tito at 160 pounds. I think tito always had middleweight power but itz just that middleweights could take his punch better than the welterweights coz he did knock out joppy and cheriffi, I know they are not your top notch fighters but were both natural middleweights

Re: Why Exactly Did Tito move up to 160lbs?
Tito was supposed to fight Jones??
I missed that one!
Anyway, the pictures a bit clearer now, thanks peeps.

Re: Why Exactly Did Tito move up to 160lbs?
alot of people give oscar the benifit of the doubt when getting ko'd by hopkins dont do the same for tito. tito was a man on a mission who challenged himself and overstepped his limit. he had to much heart

sorry no chance in hell would Trinidad KO DLH, and i highly doubt he would Mosley, only maybe if he's able to get Mosley to trade like Vargas was able to, and that's about his only chance, yea he would be able to both Ouma and Quartey, but not likely against the other two

Re: Why Exactly Did Tito move up to 160lbs?
The old saying 'styles makes fights' is often used, wheras 'weight makes fighters' is very rarely made.
I think the loss to B-hop was a number of points really - primarily that Tito's team presumed that Hopkins was a little dangerous, but slightly on the decline, thus would make an engaging & entertaining fight whilst it lasted. Also that Tito's power would be enough to claim the win and finally perhaps a little 'looking past B-hop' crept in whilst in their prep.
Tito just didnt seem his usual self in that fight and was relying on Plan A a little too much. I would have preffered Tito to have tried a few more angles on B-hop, rather than soley standing square on in front of him.
It was a shock that night - but Tito was very good in defeat and took it very gallantly and for that gained even more of my respect.
If a last-hurrah were planned for Tito then we might possibly see a Renaissance-man, as for all the benefits of fighting, there are other benefits from resting away from the sport. Being in camp and in battle after battle can be detrimental - maybe we'll see a hungry refreshed Tito....fighting at 154?
Who knows - its what makes boxing so interesting ! :)

Re: Why Exactly Did Tito move up to 160lbs?
IMO ego....Tito is one of those guys who refuses to accept his limits....Plus IMO he may have believed the Hopkins loss was just an off night.....If PBF moves to 154 the same thing will happen to him....

yeh ego is a factor....but i cant blame tito for it... he was blessed with power....
so it seemed it was probably that he was indeed blessed with power and was in actual fact naturally about middle wieght and when he fought at welter he had the power of a middleweight and then when he fought at 154 he still had middleweight power and sokme natural gifted power and because the illusion that he could still hang in at middle was set by joppy who i dont much care for!! thats how hopkins took tito apart....and to be honest im so glad it was bhop... if it were anyone else i would be gutted.. but i love bhop nearly as much as i do tito...
got to admit though, tito never ducked anyone and he was hella entertaining
theres a side of me that thinks hes still relatively young and in great shape... why not come back and clear up.... but then again i would be gutted if he failed lost more fights and retired again!!
so i say he should stay at home and enjoy his money!

Hey I don't care who you are there is no shame in losing to Hopkins...Tito is only one of many good fighters who have lost to a guy who may be the best or second best middleweight champion in history...
