Where does Toney go from here?
Well, in the wake of Toney's "loss" to Sam Peter what do you think Toney should do?
Here are some options.
1) Perhaps a rematch with Peter
2) He hasn't managed to get a decision in his last 2 fights, so should he perhaps hang up the gloves?
He isnt getting any younger at 38. And what with his eating habits and recent injuries. Maybe this
is a suitable option
3) Possibly a rematch with Rahman. But considering Rahmans desperate loss to Maskaev would this
really be a feasible option?
I dont know really, its too soon since the fight for me to think straight. What do you guys think concerning the future of James Toney?
-
Re: Where does Toney go from here?
Just go ahead and hang up the gloves. He has no leverage now for anybody to fight him, he is 38, and to lazy to go down in weight.
-
Re: Where does Toney go from here?
A rematch with Peter where he comes in 227 and beats up Peter even worse!!
-
Re: Where does Toney go from here?
I dont think since Toney is 233 for this fight I think he'll be less for his next fight ESPECIALLY a rematch with Peter!

Thats the thing though. I was hoping this would be the fight where Toney came in more trim and it was just 4 pounds less than last time. Approaching his 40's does Toney really have that discipline anymore? The only thing that concerned me in this fight was Peter's power and Toney took it relatively well. It seems Toney didnt deserve to lose, but I would have thought Toney would have been able to box smart and win more rounds than he did...
If Toney's dedication could be believed then I would be all for a rematch or even for throwing him in there with Wlad....Its all down to Toney at the end of the day...

Coming down 4 pounds is an acheivement. I think if he keeps working that consistant pace then he is going to come down even more. Like if he stays consistant as the training camp for this fight. That PLUS he's pissed. Peter is in trouble if they ever get into the ring again but Dino "Dinosaur" Duva probably won't let that happen because he knows whats up!

Don't be a hater. Toney whipped Peter. He wa clearly robbed and he'd probably come back and KO Peter if they would give him a rematch. Peter knew that he didn't win it. That's why he was kissing up to Toney.

Its a start, but Toney can push himself harder and Im sure he knows it. He's been doing a little roadwork after all!!! ;D
Agreed about Peter. I dont think his camp will want a part of Toney now, not so much because they fear Toney, but because they will be wanting their title shot. Toney's search for a title shot now becomes somewhat restricted....
I would like to watch the fight, probably will later....that will certainly have an impact on my thought...

I dont think TyBuff was hating there. Its just that Toney's options are now somewhat limited and its unlikely the Peter camp will want a rematch until after he's had his title shot....
Decisions like this are always VERY dissapointing....

Re: Where does Toney go from here?
I think toney should go give Al Berstein his well deserved reach-around, because that was some serious cheer leading.

Maybe so, but Peter shouldn't habe many options if anyone. He sucks. He's slow. Toney whipped him all night and Peter never really did much. Toney should try to protest the decision like he said and Toney-Peter II should happen soon. Even if not very soon, I'm sure that Peter will lose the championship match. Goosen should look to see who else Toney could fight. Now, what Toney should do is to think seriously about even getting into better shape. There is no way that he should retire. He showed that he could beat big heavies. Maybe I'd like to see Toney-Klitchsko.

I would love to see Toney go for broke and get in there with Wlad. It would be one heck of a spectacle!! ;D
As for Peter, he will probably get his shot at Maskaev and to be honest I think Peter would beat him up. Peter is very limited though. Its just his power that he carries with him...

Title of thread: Where does Toney go from here?
In-n-Out probably theres one down the street from Staples.

Re: Where does Toney go from here?
Personally, I was thinking they would call it a draw. I'm happy with the outcome. James Toney is yesterday's news and to have him win this fight would allow him to string out a half-hearted heavyweight carrer. I think Oleg Maskaev loses to either man, but Peter has a future ahead of him and Toney doesn't.
To me it only seems like a robbery because of the huge point spread (and because Sam Peter sprinted to the dressing room). If they had Peter winning by slimmer margin I don't see a reason to complain at all.
HOO-RAH!

Peter wasn't even close to winning. This is just as bad as why Jermain Taylor got the nod to Bernard Hopkins. It shows how many don't respect the older fighters even when they win.

Completely agree with your 2nd statement. It think its the 5 point differental that makes it look bad.

Re: Where does Toney go from here?
If anything, including the deduction from Peter, it should have been 116-111 for Toney.

Yes, just one time while Peter ate jabs like popcorn all night.
I'd like to see the Compubox numbers? Strange that they never showed them.

Re: Where does Toney go from here?
You saw Toney hurting Peter to the body and staggering him something I never thought I'd see. Peter knows just as well as Toney does that if they rematch each other that Toney could and would knock him out by tko. he COULD have done it tonight

What's funny is that no one's really talking about Peter staggering & hurting Toney in 4 rounds. No one's talking about Toney holding the ropes because Peter battered him & was close to putting him down... ::**

Holy shit.
That's denial.
Toney was hurt & Peter did it. Toney used to do that? Please. Toney took more punches than he ever has & from one of the most technically limited fighters of the heavyweight division.

Reggie Johnson, Roy Jones Jr, Mike McCallum, Montell Griffin and Vassiliy Jirov hit Toney a lot more then Peter did, even Rahman hit him more.

Those men (outside of Rahman) were not heavyweights. I am not talking about ancient history...I'm talking about the heavyweight division.
No one has hurt Toney like that at 200+.

If it was 115-113 all of them for a SD for Peter then I don't think there would be a problem. But the margin that they had adding the point deduction is the true robbery. Thats the point. That means that Toney from the 6th round on had to win every other round to get a draw and thats not the case.

The margin was too large. Another decision I dont agree with to be honest, but im surprised that a fighter as limited as Peter was able to even make it a close fight...

Re: Where does Toney go from here?
Peter showed great improvement. It was a great fight. Both guys were impressive, I give the edge to Peter. 5 points is a little extreme, but maybe all that trash talking pissed off the judges and if it was close they leaned toward Peter..... Wouldn't be the first time that has happened. Either way is was close and everyone, myself included thought Toney would dominate, and if Peter had a chance it was from a lucky shot. Definitely didn't turn out that way. Toney was hurt in my opinion at least 4 different occasions, Sam was never hurt. But he was huffing and puffing from the 3rd on through.

To me it only seems like a robbery because of the huge point spread (and because Sam Peter sprinted to the dressing room). If they had Peter winning by slimmer margin I don't see a reason to complain at all.

Yes, it is terribly similiar. Probably not quite as horrible as the first B-hop Taylor robbery, but close. Toney took Peter's best shots and stayed on his feet, something the hero of so many haters on this forum, Wladimir Klitschko could not do. Toney won by least 115-112. Peter did well for himself, but no way did he win the fight. No way in hell. >:mad

To me it only seems like a robbery because of the huge point spread (and because Sam Peter sprinted to the dressing room). If they had Peter winning by slimmer margin I don't see a reason to complain at all.
HOO-RAH!
Cool Click Excellent point :coolclick:. I thought Toney won especially with the point deduction, but i agree with you, Toney should have come in correct 217-222 he would have really put on a clinic, however he didn't and Peter was able to hurt Toney several times during the fight . Good post BG !

Re: Where does Toney go from here?
i dont think toney will be able to get a rematch against peter, as his team wont let him because they wouldnt be confident of him geting the nod nxt time round, hence ruining his title shot. i can see toney getting installed as the mandatory for the winner of peter-maskaev

Toney's options are certainly limited now, especially at the age of 38...Its a shame really, because he did genuinely do enough to win the fight :(
