James Toney was freakin' robbed. Absolutely ridiculous.
Did you see the fight? Did you see those scores? Unbelievable. Honestly. I was as unbiased as possible for several reasons and I have absolutely no beef towards Peter, but..... OMG. That was the biggest bunch of bullsh@t I've seen in years. James Toney got robbed and that's the bottom line. My whole living room was in shock. My son who just started getting into boxing looked like someone just stole something from him. I can't believe what I just saw.
-
Re: James Toney was freakin' robbed. Absolutely ridiculous.
And one more thing. I'm not saying that fight wasn't close. It was a HELL of a fight. But come on! Those margins? WITH a point deducted. Ugh. I'm upset and drunk. Forgive me.

Re: James Toney was freakin' robbed. Absolutely ridiculous.
he was definatly robbed ...anyone catch the compubox #s for the fight?
-
Re: James Toney was freakin' robbed. Absolutely ridiculous.
I didn't catch it, Means. We were all saying, "where the hell are the numbers?" All night long. Nothing. Go figure. Usually they're flashing those things every other round or so. This whole thing stinks. :bawling:

Great example! Just out of curiousity...how many of you considered the Hatton fight against Collazo a robbery?
Many did not. That was a close fight...& I suppose a case of robbery...just like the Toney Peter fight.
The fight was close...not a robbery. Toney vs Peter I mean.

Hatton: Collazo was indeed a close fight. IMO a rematch would have been fair....
It seems in the case of Peter: Toney the scores werent even as close as they should have been...

I dont know, if it wasn't a point deduction then Peter would have won the majority decision 9 rounds to 3 and that doesn't seem like the right opinion,

THe thing is...it seems that everyone has more of an issue with numbers than the results.
Watch the fight again...Peter did something that no one has done in longer times than I can count...he hurt Toney multiple times over the course of 12 rounds.
Fuck what the judges said...Peter performed better than anyone thought that he would (including myself!) and he had Toney hurt.

I agree completely. Peter was better than I expected too and he didnt fade down the stretch, which I was expecting him to do.

Toney performed better than he did against Rahman and I think Toney deserved the decision here against Peter. So in that sense, yes, Toney does deserve the credit.....
But I thought Toney would be able to win more rounds than he did against Peter. At least Rahman has a decent jab when he gets going. Peter is less technically proficient and usually relies solely on his power to force his way through. Here Peter was better and was patient. He was using a jab more and was more self controlled and asured.
If Peter was to win I thought it would be via KO, I didnt think he would be able to take as many rounds from Toney as he did.
Toney won, but It was close...Peter made it close...

Not true. Nobody gave Peter a shot in hell on this forum really...that includes me. I gave them both credit...but Peter get's more because, lets be real, he's limited as hell & he was fighting the most gifted fighter of 200 or 233 or whatever...
It was a good fight...but Toney did what I expected...Peter did just the opposite of what I was expecting.
-
Re: James Toney was freakin' robbed. Absolutely ridiculous.
Yes I was very suprised with Peter's performance. It looks as if he actually learned a little, and had the sense to use some strategy. It was a very entertaining fight and I think Peter edged it. He did hurt Toney several times, and he wasn't embarrasingly outboxed as I expected. He actually threw bodyshots and used his jab, even a couple of combinations. Peter is much improved, and Toney is a frickin beast. He took and gave some very very hard shots. Great fight, didn't agree with the scoring being so lopsided, but I enjoyed it and it went to the actual winner in my opinion.

What a hater you are bein man. Jesus... I'd expect more outta ya, but I shoulda learned by now. I like both guys and was kinda rootin for Peter for a wihle, but James took his best shots, unlike Wladimir Klit, and came back and certainly should have won the fight. It was close, but with the point deduction it was very very clear James had won the fight. Unbelievable that anyone can agree with this decision or try to down play it. It was fucked, period. >:mad

Glad to disappoint you.
Can't wait for a Spinks Mayorga rematch so that I can watch Mayorga lose again. There's some hate for you...since you like to throw that word around so much. :Moon: :P

Re: James Toney was freakin' robbed. Absolutely ridiculous.
As I said Peter lost because he was too heavy and got tired. It was all Toney. Poor Peter my grand ma fights better.

Yeah...Mayorga was actually robbed in that fight even worse than Toney was tonight. But that's another story, Spinks is the ultimate fraud. Really if you truly didn't think this was a robbery, then you have absolutely NOTHING to bitch about concernin the Winky vs Taylor fight. Nada, zip, nothin. In fact you should applaud it, it was a close fight and Winky should stop whining. Taylor won it fair and square. :o ::**

Re: James Toney was freakin' robbed. Absolutely ridiculous.
HW division is fun. Despite the decision it was a fun fight.
Maskaev vs Peter. Real heavy hitting fun.
Peter must be too green to win over Maskaev. I mean Maskaev is durable and can hit and has amaour experience.

So that means that he won the Fight. That is probably more of an argument of exacly why he shouldn't win the fight. If I had raced Carl Lewis in his prime and gotten closer than anyone to beating him and even led the race at times that still doesn't mean I actually won it, lmao. Nobody is gonna say "Yeah that guy shoulda won the race...I've never seen anyone keep up with Carl like that". Sad..just sad... For all who see this, THIS kind of statement just shows what boxing is these days when you have a a Middleweight getting robbed at heavyweight.

Re: James Toney was freakin' robbed. Absolutely ridiculous.
I personaly wanted Peter to Win but not like this. Toney did an incredible fight and daamn great chin.
It was clear that the judges where haters, clear as that.
But I do pick Peter over Makaev and then re-match between Vlad or toney
-
Re: James Toney was freakin' robbed. Absolutely ridiculous.
If you think the Below statements are true than I guess Peter won the fight
-Peter won 75% of the rounds versus James Toney
-Jabs don't really count in scoring
-Sam Peter did better than expected so he clearly won just based on that fact
-Being aggressive and missing is better than landing effective punches
-Tony only won 3 rounds the entire fight
-Peter absolutely dominated James tonight winning 9 rounds
All that would pretty much have to be true in the Judges eyes for Peter to have won like he did. I was a huge Sam Peter fan but it's just something about a cheap win that makes me wonder about skill and potential.
-
Re: James Toney was freakin' robbed. Absolutely ridiculous.
I saw the fight w people new to boxing. They were impressed by Toney and thought the young guy Peter was hopeless. They could not belive the judges.

I agree with you there Waco...Tough fight to judge...Toney did outbox Peters a lot but Peters did hurt Toney many times...More than Toney wanted to admit...He moved James whole body at times...Then again Toney did frustrate Peters making him look amatuerish...Hoping for the big shot to end it...James tatooed Peters with slick jabs...Very hard to score...Agressor or technician?
-
Re: James Toney was freakin' robbed. Absolutely ridiculous.
Just watched the fight and scored each round myself.
I thought it was a good fight, 2 top guys actually fighting each other and I thought they both deserved some credit for that. I wouldn't have thought that it was a crossroads fight, the loser would still have somewhere to go.
Unbelievably, I had the fight 116-116, but had Toney the winner because of the point deduction in the 9th. Some comments:
- tough fight to score, and i don't think it would have been a robbery of it had gone either way
- Good referee, did a good job all the way through. Liked him swearing at the fighters "Don't fuck around.. don't play fucking games either of you"
- Toney showed that he is a true heavyweight, took some big shots. Like Peter said "he's a rock" Fantastic jab, great technique, very elusive. Thought he threw a lot of sneaky stuff inside that idiot judges tend to miss. I did think he outhustled Peter.
- Peter showed good stamina, very heavy shots and used his weight well. Toney couldn't hurt him. He was a bit limited and does plod forward in a predictable way?
- bizarre post fight comments form Peter about the Pharaoh of Egypt?
- Toney's funny - "ugly and busted up like Larry Holmes" Haha. He is definitely slurring though!!
Do you know what the fight reminded me of? ......... a dream matchup between Sonny Liston and Jack Johnson !!!!
-
Re: James Toney was freakin' robbed. Absolutely ridiculous.
I don't see how Peter could have won more than five rounds, bad decision, maybe not a robbery but clearly a bad decision.
-

James Toney
Guess what, Fat Head, it didn't happen. In fact, you had to grab to the top rope to hold your sloppy ass up off the canvas.
Toney should be thankful that he didn't get kocked on his ass. All the trash talk in the world wouldn't have explained that away.

Close fight on which i thought Toney deserved the nod......Oh well.
But i felt bad for him at the end though, not a man of class but nevertheless a great fighter.

I felt bad for him as well, that's honesty on my part. I did not feel bad for him because I thought he lost though. I felt for him because he was distraught and I really do like him.
I still think Peter won

I'd love to hear which 7 rounds you think Peter won. Because on a sane person's scorecard he didn't win more than 5, six if you are a rabid Toney hater.

Agreed. I wasn't scoring the fight round by round, but I thought Toney was up the entire fight, and had it in the bag already once Peter had the point deducted. It seemed like Peter won 4-5 rounds. Even the rounds that the Showtime guys were giving him were based on him landing one or two punches in the last 20 seconds, after being schooled the whole first 2 1/2 minutes of the round. I'd LOVE to see the punchstats--Toney probably outlanded him by a factor of 3.

Yeah, CC. They didnt' show punchstats for a reason. Through over half the fight I was rootin for Peter, I like both guys, but I wanted Peter to do somethin, test James, make it a fight. He did, but he also lost the fight. After that point deduction it was clear James had taken over the fight and probably won both the 11th and 12th.

Well, when they announced the winner I balled up my scorehard and bounced it off my friend Dave's shoulder and howled with laughter and glee. He on the other hand screamed BULLSHIT at the top of his lungs.  My girlfriend tossed it in the dumpster this morning.
I remember having Toney winning rounds 1 and 2.  Then I had Peter with 3, 4, 5.  I had Peter winning round 12.  The rest is a blur.
Did they show punch stats for the first fight?  I can't recall...
