Hobson v Polakovic, Mitchell v Isaev DRBR
Okay, so I figure as this one's on the bog standard public television that I don't have to have sky for, I figured I'd do my own low-key, low-brow version of Wacko's Drunken Round by Round. Obviously, being American, Wacko's DRBR are going to be louder, bigger, brasher and generally more full of itself than mine. But then again, his alcohol tolerance is also higher than mine.
So get in the lager shandies and Pimm's, settle back on the settee, and let's enjoy some rather interesting boxing fights. (Here comes the toned down version of Wacko's analysis).
So, headlining this evening is Mark Hobson (200lbs) v Pavol Polakovic (199 3/4lbs) for the WBU Cruiserweight title.
Hobson is going for the minority WBU title for the third time, having lost out to Enzo Maccarinelli on the undercard of the Calzaghe/Lacy humdinger in March, and also having lost to Sebastiaan Rothmann a few years back. Even for a cruiser, Hobson brings in a bundle of inches, standing at 6'5", and bringing in a record of 25-4-1 (13 KOs), including those defeats against Macca and Rothmann.
Ultimately, this is a step up of sorts for Hobson, , although Polakovic has a dubious pedigree to be fighting for the title, especially with Hobson being a long reigning British and Commonwealth Cruiser Champ.
As for Polakovic, information is sketchy. He brings in a 11-1 record, including only 1 KO, so that obviously shows that he's a boxer not a puncher. Most significantly, his loss was to Lasse Johansen, a reasonable Dane who gave David Haye a fair fight. However, Polakovic also represented the Czech Republic in the 1996 Olympics, crashing out in the second round. From what I can guess, I expect him to be reasonably good technically, with good stamina, having gone 12 rounds with an undefeated Italian last time out for the IBF International Cruiserweight title. Also, according to boxrec he has a fight scheduled for the Czech Cruiserweight title a few months later, so that would suggest a lack of confidence in his ability to beat Hobson.
My prediction: Hobson by an early to mid KO/stoppage.
Next up is Kevin Mitchell (130) v Andrey Isaev (129 1/2) for the IBF Inter Continental Super Featherweight title.
For this one both Mitchell and Isaev are undefeated, with Mitchell bringing 20 wins and 14 KOs, and Isaev bringing 12 wins and 4 KOs. Mitchell is the title holder, and throughout his career, has never been really seriously tested so far, without even a close points fight on his record. Isaev has never fought outside of the Eastern Bloc, and is likely to face a large step up in class against Mitchell. Should be a goodie, with Mitchell coming out on top.
Also is the pro debut of former soccer player Curtis Woodhouse.
Proceedings begin at 9.30pm UK time, which I believe is 4.30pm EST, and the rest are a damn mystery. Bring the bottles and I'll see you here. (Cheers for the tips Wack!)

Re: Hobson v Polakovic, Mitchell v Isaev DRBR
Ok, listen out look in, it's 9.30 and the Big Fight Live is about to start on ITV. So here I go, the beer is chilled, the Mistubishi advert is on, and Hobson is getting his gloves laced. Lets hope for two wins for the English fighters!

Re: Hobson v Polakovic, Mitchell v Isaev DRBR
Just got a few clips of each of them warming up, and considering that he's not a puncher, polakovic ain't looking very lean. Also, Rosenthal was mentioning a match between the winner of this one and the winner of Maccarinelli/Nelson next month. Perhaps a big step up for Hobson, though he gave a good account of himself last time out against Macca.
-
Re: Hobson v Polakovic, Mitchell v Isaev DRBR
Entrances....
Polakovic walked in to Shakira's 'Hips don't lie'....He's definitely not a puncher. A fair bit shorter than Hobson, and looking a little bewildered to be there.
Hobson's looking mean, and very focussed. Weighing in on the championship limit, Hobson looks pretty comfortable. The crowd there is very quiet though. Perhaps this fight warrants a better audience, and more people chanting for Hobson.
-
Re: Hobson v Polakovic, Mitchell v Isaev DRBR
Tentative start, Polakovic with a low guard, looks pretty flabby, Hobson throwing all the punches. The Czech swinging wildly. Hobson, patient, working behind the jab. Right from Hobson, connected. Polakovic talks a lot. Nice jab to finish from Polakovic, but round to Hobson. Looks like it could go long, Hobson patient and Polakovic fighting off the back foot.

Re: Hobson v Polakovic, Mitchell v Isaev DRBR
good stuff lets make this a sticky ;)

Re: Hobson v Polakovic, Mitchell v Isaev DRBR
Nice right from Hobson early in the second, Polakovic still running. Not connecting with much from the Czech, for some reason he reminfs me of Forest Whitaker. Hobson doing all the attacking, one two from him. Wild swings from Polakovic, not coming close though. Good jab from Hobson, Polakovic marked under the left eye. Good right to close from Hobson.

Re: Hobson v Polakovic, Mitchell v Isaev DRBR
the guy does'nt have much of a defence does he?
-
Re: Hobson v Polakovic, Mitchell v Isaev DRBR
How the eck does Wacko type so much on each round. Polakovic hasn't connected many punches at all. The Czech's already looking pretty tired. In the hold, he finally connects to the body in a clinch, but Hobson gets him twice in return. He can't run as much, so he's getting caught more often. Not sure how long Polakovic can go.
Hobson is taking this at a canter. Unless Polakovic shows something, then he'll lose this easily. 3-0 Hobson.

Re: Hobson v Polakovic, Mitchell v Isaev DRBR
Hobson stepping it up now, two flurries opn the ropes, Three punch flurry from Polakovic, only one got trough though. Big right left from Hobson. Polakovic wraps him up. Good right to the body from the Czech. Great left from Hobson walked into by Polakovic. Hobson's showing better movement than he has done. He is getting caught on the counter more this time. In round four, neither of them looking too energetic.
Hobson with the meaningful punches again, but Polakovic showing some resilience, throwing some of his own, so I'll give it as a tie.

Re: Hobson v Polakovic, Mitchell v Isaev DRBR
will e intrested to see how Mitchell does as this is no easy defence... shame the guy dosnt get as much publicity as Khan :-\
would be a nice fight but dont think Frank putting Khan in with him...

Re: Hobson v Polakovic, Mitchell v Isaev DRBR
What the heck have I stumbled across? It's 5:00 pm on the East Coast of the US. Is this happening rightnow?
-
Re: Hobson v Polakovic, Mitchell v Isaev DRBR
A little too tentative for me so far. Nice combo from Hobson. Polakovic throws five or six short punches, but only one gets through. Uppercut connects with Polakovic's chest, two inches higher could have been troule. Hobson pawing a bit with the jab. Nice right on the break from Hobson. Lots of glove punches from Polakovic. Hobson rocks him with a left. Another round to the englishman. Polakovic' stamina is not what it could be.
4-0 to hobson (or 5-1 with the tie.)

Re: Hobson v Polakovic, Mitchell v Isaev DRBR
Yup, sorry dude, British time is not good for boxing if you're in the states. :p Fair left swing from Polakovic catches Hobson. A warning not to get complacent. You can tell this Czech was a l;ight middle in the Olympics 10 years ago...he's got a gut like me. Hobon still working the jab. Polakovic still ducking around a lot, trying to negate the height and reach advantage. Hobson pushing forward, got caught by another counter. A bigger puncher might have hurt him. Polakovic wants to hang on. Mickey Vann has a workd as Polakovic turns away.
Hobson again....he's cruising. Already it'll take a KO for the Czech in my view.
-
Re: Hobson v Polakovic, Mitchell v Isaev DRBR
Second half of the fight. Although Polakovic is a southpaw, perhaps Hobson could attack more. Polakovic looks knackered, more wrestling, even less Boxing. Fair right from Hobson. Working the body more. The Czch;s left eye is bleeding proper now. He finallly comes forward and gets caught with a Hobson right. NBice left hook from Hobson, pushing him into the corner. Good one two from the Czech catches Hobson. Good right body/right hook combo from Hobson.
Hobson 6-0 i reckon, nowt much at all from this Czech.

Re: Hobson v Polakovic, Mitchell v Isaev DRBR

Re: Hobson v Polakovic, Mitchell v Isaev DRBR
Nice opening left from Hobson. This guy looks to have a fairly good chin. Hobson rocks himback on the ropes. Still ain't attacking too much. This guy ain't throwing too much back...but Hoboson doesn't wnat to leave himself open. Lots of 'Wacko's' clenching. :p Two good rights, and the Czech is clenching again.
Hobson settling for a points win, and he's cruising.
-
Re: Hobson v Polakovic, Mitchell v Isaev DRBR
Hobson caught by a good left. Not much behind it. Nice one two from Hobson. Typing Polakovich is a bloody hassle, anyway, that guy is trying to dance, away from hobson. If hobson can corner him and tee off with a few, that could really put this Czech in trouble. The Duke is pretty accurate, Hobson outworking the Czech but not looking for a KO too much. Hobson dropping his left a bit...he needs to go to work cause unless its a KO then it ain't too impressive.
-
Re: Hobson v Polakovic, Mitchell v Isaev DRBR
yeah starting to lose intrest in this fight.... bring on mitchell 8)

Be easy on Ol' Hobson there will ya ;) Don't force him to do something he ain't willin' to do lol

Re: Hobson v Polakovic, Mitchell v Isaev DRBR
Round 10 - looks to be a points win from here. Nice uppercut on the inside from Hobson. Polakovic throws a good right hook. Nice short left from hobson coming out of the hold. nice right left from Hobson. Good combo from Polakovich. Hobson still getting the better of it, but he seems to be tiring down to the Czech's level.. Good right from Hobson. Polakovich is turning his back, and Hobson gets warning for hitting on the back of the head. Second warning for Hobson. Polakovich finally showing some attacking intent. Coming forward a bit more. Good finish by Polakovich. I'll give this as another tie.
Hobson 100 - 92 with two to go.

You're probably right, but we've got Curtis Woodhouse up next. Not too usre what to expect. Too much hanging on from Polakovich. I think he probably came in to the ring looking to go the full stretch, and that was his taret. A negative and frustrating fighter for Hobson, he's cruising, but not showing anything that he's dangerous to the division. Fair play to Polakovich, he is trying to use every opportunity to touch gloves, after every round and many times in between, a sportsman if nothing else.
Hobson's round again, nine rounds up....two ties.

Re: Hobson v Polakovic, Mitchell v Isaev DRBR
Finally. This has been a bit of a damp squib so far. Polakovich having a bit of a bum's rush coming forward. Asthe fight goes on, his right eye is looking a bit lazy, and i stand by my Forest Whitaker comparison. Reasonable ombo from Polakovich. Hobson not doing too much in this last either. A bit of showboating on his part. What a snoozer, twenty seconds to go.... nice left hook from Polakovich, and it's all over.
Hobson 120-110, andif Hobson doesn't take this it'll be the greatest travesty in sport. HYobson showed nothing to demonstrate any threat to Nelson or Maccarinelli though, even David Haye wouldn't be too worried going in to this.
-
Re: Hobson v Polakovic, Mitchell v Isaev DRBR
Hobson takes an unanimous decision, by a long stretch. Having spoken with him earlier in the week, I'm delighted for him, but this wasn't a very good showcase for him, his great fight against 'buster' keeton earlier in the year was much better. Anyhow, he's the WBU champion, and I finally get a break to run to the loo....next time i'm buying spirits, beer is not the thing here :p

Re: Hobson v Polakovic, Mitchell v Isaev DRBR
hahahah you did well mate rbr's aint an easy thing to do but you nailed that one good work mate have another CC
-
Re: Hobson v Polakovic, Mitchell v Isaev DRBR
Hobson has just apologised to the crowd for not putting on a better fight. I don't think Hobson's going to fight in a charity event again, they were very quiet, far too many celebs in there, and not too many passionate fans. Hobson has a great cadre of fans, who are very vocal in his fights, and he sure did miss them this time out.
Next up Curtis Woodhouse, former footballer who quit football to pretend to be a boxer. It's a 4 x 2min round fight, but I'm looking forward to this one, might be a comparison between soccerplayers and boxers.

yeah me too... i think hes mad for taking up boxing as he was worth a million as afootball player ???
but i guess thats whats got me intrested in this one. ;)
-
Re: Hobson v Polakovic, Mitchell v Isaev DRBR
not a football fan so does woodhouse always look that gaunt :-\
-
Re: Hobson v Polakovic, Mitchell v Isaev DRBR
Okay. In comes the opposition. The name seems hardly relevant, he's really little more than a punchbag for Woodhouse...let's be honets. Dean Mark Antonio. Looks a little imtimadated.
Woodhouse coming in looking focussed, ignoring the crowd though. He's looking quite ripped. The comentators say he lost two stones to become a Welterweight (that's 28 lbs to the americans ;))
Like a underdog going into his race. Antonio's got a sweat on :p
-
Re: Hobson v Polakovic, Mitchell v Isaev DRBR
not too impressed if im honest... not much power and dont rate his chin. :-\
-
Re: Hobson v Polakovic, Mitchell v Isaev DRBR
-
Re: Hobson v Polakovic, Mitchell v Isaev DRBR
Antonio doing a bit of attacking, Woodhouse getting the better of the early stages. Nice straight left. He's switching stance, but his left is looking especially good for Woodhouse.
Woodhouse 1-0
Strong start from Antonio. Both showing some attacking. Good combo's from Woodhouse. He does have a good left on him, Antonio swinging much, not connecting as much. Woodhouse marking up. Decent right straight from Antonio connecting.
Antonio probably edged that one. I'll give it as 1-1.

the only name you need to remember is Mitchell mate hes the only future star on the bill and hes next ;)
Woodhouse needs to get back to football and sharpish... if hes having a tearup with this guy hes got no chance of geting anywhere IMHO ;)
