Can Carlos Baldomir pull off the upset of the Year? He's done it twice already.
For once we had a rarity my friends, fellow boxing enthusiasts, and beloved forum goers...a weekend that was devoid of the standard drunken installment of yee Ole' Round by Round. To fill the void I've thrown together this little article for discussions sake...and also...gotdammit I'm bored...and you all know how I love the weekend interaction.
For the past month or so I've been getting back on track with my vhs to dvd transfers. In doing so, I sat through Baldomir's matches against Gatti and Judah, along with Mayweather's bouts respectively. So...in anticipation of the upcoming Mayweather Baldomir unification showdown I'd like to discuss the matter in depth...so hear me out...or read me out and let's get this going.
Can Baldomir pull off the Upset of the Year?
It's 2006 & he's done it twice already...
Over the past year I've been guilty of that one thing most boxing fan's fall prey to...being biased and ignoring talent.
Being a huge fan of Floyd Mayweather jr. it's easy to recognize his talents & abilities. Even Floyd's greatest critics will admit that he is one of the most talented fighters of the past five to ten years, this admittance is shortly followed by more detractions regarding his opponents and so on & so on. Critic's will be critics.
That being said...over the past year I've been guilty of that one thing most boxing fan's fall prey to...ignoring talent. Maybe I should rephrase myself...dismissing talent is more accurate...no...maybe denying talent is a bit more on the up and up.
However you look at it, I've been dismissing the talent, heart, and abilities of one Carlos Manuel Baldomir, the current WBC and IBA Welterweight Champion.
So...why am I acknowledging my faults, you ask?
Quite simply...the man has defied the odds of late and he's slammed the door shut on two of the sports superstars to become the Welterweight Champion of the world. No small feat.
Many of my fellow forum goer's will laugh at that statement based on my previous opinions regarding Baldomir and also the opposition that he has beaten of recent date. While I may not be a fan of Zab Judah or Arturro Gatti...there is no denying that there is skill there in both men and they have defeated some game opponents.
While I do admit to being a die hard fan of Mayweather, I am beginning to warm to Baldomir and also his chances. Over the past month I have begun to see this fight as a possible upset in the making...honestly...unbiasedly...how could one not?
Sure, you can break apart Gatti and Judah and their worth at 147 pounds. Sure, you can say that Baldomir has gotten lucky to catch these two opponents of name recognition at the likely end of their ropes. Sure you can say that Baldomir hasn't a shot in hell of winning against Floyd. Sure, it's impressive that Baldomir has gotten this far in the division. Sure, it's just as impressive that Floyd has made the climb up the tall ladder of all of the divisions that he has.
Sure, you can bring up all of the positives and negatives that spring to mind...but one thing is for sure...this is going to be the fight of both men's career.
All talk of timing and luck aside, in my personal opinion...it's impressive as hell that Baldomir has gotten this far. It's just as impressive as it is that Floyd has made the climb up the tall ladder of the divisions that he has.
Unfortunately, with this fight and it's outcome, I feel that we will all become suspects in another crime...ignoring talent. Wev'e all become a bit to critical & cynical regarding both of these fighters...and if justice is served over the course of twelve rounds...it would be a shame to ignore the merit of both men...and believe you me...there are those of us who will.
Again, a month or so ago, I would have been on of those "us".
Watching the four matches and shared opponents between both Baldomir and Mayweather it's easy to recognize that both Judah and Gatti always rise to the occassion against B and C level fighters...they never crash the party with the A listers. Gatti was basically slaughtered by Mayweather and was broken down by Baldomir (who I considered to be and still do see him as B level or maybe B+), and IWO, both fights should be career ending matches for Gatti.
The shared Judah fight produced wildly different results. While Baldomir outboxed and gutted it out down the stretch against Judah in shocking fashion, Judah was able to hang in there for five or six rounds against Floyd. This would have been shocking, but as per the norm with Judah...once pressed he fell apart and fell back into the pattern of utter stupidity within the ring.
One has to wonder, based on the fact that Baldomir performed so well against both men and that Floyd will finally be facing a full fledged Welterweight warrior, how will Mayweather perform?
The fact that I've gone from wondering how Baldomir will look against the technically superior slickster that Mayweather is...to wondering how Floyd will fair against Baldomir shocks even me. It may even seem like I'm just covering my own ass in the wake of a Baldomir win...but that's not it. The true fact of the matter is...Baldomir has done so well lately that it brings up some serious questions.
Questions:
#1: Can Floyd continue to rise up with repeated success?
#2: Can Baldomir continue to hold his unbeaten streak against the cream of the crop?
#3: Can Floyd's hands, chin, and skills pull him through against today's equivelant of "the Cinderella Man"?
My answers:
#1: No. I don't think that he can. Favorite fighter or not...I don't go for the weight jumping...I think that it ruins careers down the road. I believe that Mayweather will beat Baldo in a tuff fight...but moving up to 154 & more...possibley facing Oscar or Mosley...things like that...I just don't see him pulling off anymore.
#2: No. I don't think that Baldo will defeat Floyd.
#3: Yes. Floyd's hands, chin, and skills pull him through this battle...the real question is...does everyone buy into the fact that the media is selling Baldo as today's equivelant of "the Cinderella Man"?
All will be answered Saturday November the 4th, 2006 in what will be one of the most important 12 rounders of both careers with the WBC, IBO, and the IBA Welterweight titles on the line. It's make or break for Baldomir and another chance for Floyd to prove that he is indeed the pound for pound elite fighter of the world.
Now...if I were to be wrong...honestly...I'd hate for my guy to lose...but I couldn't think of a better person for him to lose to. Oddly enough...I guess that means that I do buy into Baldomir being today's equivelant of "the Cinderella Man", which I find to be an aggrevating term that is thrown around quite frequently today in boxing. Baldomir is the rags to riches story in a nutshell though and I do dig on the fact that he's got everything to lose going in to this fight. While I may not think that Baldomir has the technical skills to best Mayweather...he does have the heart and he does have the edge in power, couple that with the fact that he's proven that he can take a shot...well...you never know what could happen.
In the end...I'll be sticking to a Mayweather Unanimous Decision Unification Win...but a shock could be quite refreshing and who better to recieve the honor of defeating one of the greatest fighters in the sport today?
I can't think of anyone more deserving than Carlos Baldomir.
There...I said it.

Re: Can Carlos Baldomir pull off the upset of the Year? He's done it twice alrea
Good article but I think you are giving Baldy a little too much credit.
Floyd will dominate him. Honestly I see Carlos having maybe one good round early on but after that it will be all Floyd.
I'm seeing another Coralles here. The ref will step in to stop a brave but badly beaten Baldomir by the 10th round.
I would love to be completely wrong though :P

Re: Can Carlos Baldomir pull off the upset of the Year? He's done it twice already.
As I have mentioned before in other posts, I am a new fan of this guy....
I seriously dig a guy that normally walks around at 190, drops weight to 140 and kicks ass....He has ungodly power and I dont see anyone in the weight class being able to hurt him...
YES, I think an upset of the year is in the making!!!
Baldy going to kick some ass!!!!
Good Luck,
Coach

Have you even seen Baldy fight???
The way you talk, apparently you havent....
Baldomir is a hell of alot stronger than Mayweather and Mayweather isnt big enough to hurt Baldy...So pummeling him is not even an option here...
The only way Mayweather wins this fight is, "hit and run", he has no chance of standing toe to toe with Baldy...
If Mayweather does decide to be stupid and stand toe to toe with Baldy, Baldy wins by KO....
Good Luck,
Coach

you may be the only person alive that thinks that baldomir has "ungodly power." let alone any power
i like him personally, and have tons of respect for his accomplishments but baldomir IS NOT a power puncher. have you ever seen him fight? or are you just thinking back to when he fought gatti? (where mayweather showed more power than any of baldomirs performances, and whipped him much more convincingly)
and you are seriously reaching thinking that mayweather is going to be stupid and trade shots with baldomir.
i dont see baldomir outboxing floyd, either...................pbf is way too good
and btw............baldomir fights at 147, not 140 (get it together before you start spouting off nonsense asking people if theyve ever seen him fight, when apparantly you havent ;))
Good Luck,

Re: Can Carlos Baldomir pull off the upset of the Year? He's done it twice already.
:coolclick: For the Analysis.... Very Provoking..
I have been pondering Baldomir's chances as well and I have come up with a few thoughts of my own.
Baldomir is a C+ to B- fighter IMO I'm not taking anything away from his recent accompolishments, I say these things cause any fighter with a chin, heart, pop in his punch could beat Judah...
We all know Judah's focus issues, Almost reminds me of Mike Tyson on a smaller scale, He has NO ability to adapt if the game plan dosent get executed 100000% Judah myswell walk out of the ring if shit isin't going right for him...
Arturo Gatti is a complete freak of nature....But its like you said he is B class himself....Arturo has shown the same characteristics as Judah his career but it's not as apparent cause Gatti's heart and Power are a great equalizer...If Gatti's plan isin't coming to fruition he simply throws caution to the Wind and just go's to war reverting to the Blood and Guts warrior....Which as a fan is entertaining like a real life Rocy movie but not smart and against a Guy like Baldo he just got flatened..
Now as I dug deep to contemplate Baldo, it got me taking a closer look at Floyd and what I realized is he is on the verge of quite possibly being one of the best ever and here is why...
Floyd is a super-genius in the ring I say at 28 he is probably already top 5 in the ring smarts category,I also thought about all his comparisons to Roy Jones and my conclusion is Floyd is better on paper(here me out) Roy ALWAYS relied on his athleticism in the ring 1st, he isint exactly a blueprint of technical excellence and fundamentals, Roys athleticism was his great equalizer and was ALWAYS a notch above the rest until recently..
Floyd on the other hand is just about as athletic and pyhsically gifted as Roy, difference being that Floyd relies on his Technical skills and Fundamentals 1ST, he is a Boxing machine and an absolute polished diamond technically, fundamentally and defenseivly and he supplements this with his astounding athleticism(he's like the perfect boxing predator lol!!) Floyd is also the master at adaption he never loses focus and adjust better than just about anyone....
I think Baldo's run as nice as its been, is just about over I wouldnt give him anything else but a punchers chance and that is slim as well seeing Floyd defense has been top 3 in the last 7 yrs only rivaled by B-Hop and Winky.....
I say Floyd beats him not as severe as he beat Gatti but I think it will be messy Floyd TKO late or Landslide desicion...

Re: Can Carlos Baldomir pull off the upset of the Year? He's done it twice already.
Well Judah was handling Baldomir pretty easily before he lost focus. Expect to see the same. But I dont think PBF will get lazy

Re: Can Carlos Baldomir pull off the upset of the Year? He's done it twice already.
Carlos Baldomir is a true warrior, who has earned his spot undisputedly... The trouble is he doesn't have enough talent to even give FLoyd trouble imo... Let's examine the two upsets of the year that Carlos has already gotten... Anyone should have been able to see that Zab Judah was handling him early, he was way too fast and Carlos couldn't even catch him, but then he did, just once... If anyone thinks one average right hand is going to make Floyd pull a chicken dance, stop fighting altogether and run for 5 rounds, I just don't think it's realistic... I also don't think it's fair to call his win over Gatti, "upset of the year"... I mean come on... Sure Gatti is a fan favourite(and I do admit I thought he could win the fight boxing, which I still think he had a shot to do if he had listened to his corner and tried to box earlier..) But besides that, Gatti had never, EVER, beat a half decent welterweight... He had lost to many average fighters before, and in all honesty I think there are about 20+ active welterweights who could have beaten, even KOed Gatti on that night instead of Baldomir.. He just isn't an elite fighter as much as people love him.. I think people only picked Gatti to win because they thought Baldomir's win over Judah was a fluke... When the fact is just about anyone who could beat Zab Judah over 12 rounds, would beat Gatti...
-
Re: Can Carlos Baldomir pull off the upset of the Year? He's done it twice already.
IMO it is possible.....I personally didn't consider the Gatti win that much of an upset

Baldomir has a lot of power in those straight shots he threw, ask Gatti ;)

If you check my posts prior to the fight I said that Baldomir would destroy Gatti. 8)
To me it was the least suprising result of 2006. Gatti has been done for years.

I really didn't think Gatti had that much of a chance...IMO 147 is too big for him...I was rooting for him though...Always been a big fan of his..Guy has too much heart not to like him....Truth is even if he did win he wouldn't have held the title for long anyway

NO not at all....For one Baldo has been on a roll..It won't be the first upset and the guy hasn't lost in who knows how long...He is also bigger than Mayweather...Even as good as Floyd is size will eventualy be a factor maybe here maybe not but you know the old expression...A good Big man Will beat a good little man...Not to imply Baldo has more skills than Floyd but just as an example...Will it be an upset yes but not to monumentous proportions....Floyd has been in with some weak comp and it has been a while since he has fought a guy who can take the punches of Carlos...IMO speed is still the real factor in this fight....
Tyson is/was a heavyweight...He destroyed everyfighter in his path....Up until douglas he was never really hurt much...Douglas was not really world class comp ( as the case with many of Tysons victims)...There was never anyreason to think Douglas was a threat to at anypoint...He didn't have an upset on his resume nor did he have a long undefeated streak.....

Baldo will not outbox Floyd...but his sheer physical size difference...that you can gotdam well believe will be applied is going to be a factor.

Agreed. Good points...but the fact remains...Baldo did it when others hadn't of late...& he should be credited.

Absolutely. Tyson was all power, Floyd is all skill & what all boxers aspire to be...whether they want to admit it or not...Floyd is the greatest tactician of the past decade...ask James Toney...he even gives Floyd props...& I mean...everyone loves JFAT...right. :-X

As much as I don't think Baldy has a chance of beating Floyd, even if he does it would not be anywhere near the upset that Douglas beating Tyson was.
Before the Tyson Douglas fight, there wasn't even a discussion about Douglas winning, a Tyson win was just taken for granted, as much as the sun rising in the morning.
Baldomir has been causing plenty of waves this year, everybody knows who he is now, and some people evidently are even tipping Baldy to win.
He won't though :P

I actaully think this will be a tricky fight for Floyd in spells due to the size factor. But Floyd will come through it and win a UD.

This seems to be getting some good points & in lue of the RBR...I'd like to make this a sticky for a day or so if possible...because this fight is going to be a biggy...if anyone disagrees...then unsticky it...but be forewarned...whoever does so...I will bare knuckle box you NAKED in the streets in front of your peers. :-X

you may be the only person alive that thinks that baldomir has "ungodly power." let alone any power

The Tyson loss to Douglas was to me, not even close to being an upset...As a matter of fact, I had my money on Douglas to win that fight...
Tyson was going to lose that fight because of the state of mind he was in before he went to the fight...
Everyone warned Tyson's camp about Douglas, but, with all the peeps telling Tyson he had it in the bag....But the critics were seeing differently...
I think Baldy beating Floyd would be an accomplishment and a huge upset....I believe it would be one not able to be measured or compared to other fights....
People just need to remember, never underestimate the powers of the determined....
Good Luck,

It may even seem like I'm just covering my own a** in the wake of a Baldomir win...but that's not it.
I agree, especially if he moves up to 154, I gaurantee he gets KTFO

Re: Can Carlos Baldomir pull off the upset of the Year? He's done it twice already.
Fisrt off,CC Wack for awesome analysis,I love reading that shat. Also, everyone on this thread has made awesome points!!! Here's my take.....
I believe Baldo is a tough rugged, iron chinned and willed individual, who upset Judah but I don't think the win over Gatti was an upset(got me big points in the Prediction Contest 8)),but the 1 thing Baldo has in his favour is possibly the element of surprise,as in with his power.
His record is deceptive,he is not a weak puncher and for some reason, against blown up 147pounders,he does more damage and maybe he will have that effect again on Floyd...if he lands? Because that is 1 thing NONE of us can say with great confidence, how good is Floyd's chin? He's so dam fast that we have not seen him get hit enough at 140 and 147 to truly rate his chin but unfortunately, that is the only chance I can give Baldo and it's a low chance. Every other factor is in Floyd's favour&I believe that Floyd will should win relatively easily with Tata causing the odd moment of trouble for him but nothing more. I also think Baldo will retire after this fight unless he wins, this is that big payday he has been waiting for all his life and he's not getting any younger.
I love the Cinderella story though and win or lose,he's my fighter of the year with Pacquiao.
