It’s Official: Margarito Takes on Clottey on December 2

“It’s official, Joshua Clottey will be Antonio's next opponent, on Saturday, December 2nd,” Antonio Margarito's manager, Sergio Diaz, told Maxboxing.com on Tuesday afternoon.
“After looking at all our current options, and seeing how Floyd (Mayweather) avoided Tony at all costs, first by waiting for (Oscar) De La Hoya, then (Ricky) Hatton, (Cory) Spinks and so on, we and Top Rank decided to move forward.”
Margarito who is coming off three impressive victories in the gruesome, ear ripping late rounds stoppage over Sebastian Lujan, the destruction of Kermit Cintron, and a one round blowout of still dangerous Manuel ''Shotgun'' Gomez, will be making his second career appearance at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, with the co-feature being WBO super lightweight champion Miguel Cotto defending his crown against TBA in the Top Rank-promoted / Showtime-televised double header.
''We opted for Clottey because he is the highest available contender that is easy to deal with, as he just recently signed with Top Rank.'' said Diaz. ''Although Paul Williams is currently the number one contender, he is asking for too much money, and he essentially outpriced himself. Paul will become Antonio's mandatory next month, and Top Rank will be have to deal with his people again and try to reach an agreement. If they don't, then the match will go to purse bid. I really don't believe Paul would want this to happen, as he might get paid less than Top Rank's initial offer. Mosley is the number two ranked fighter in the WBO. But with all the hatred between Top Rank and Golden Boy, this is a fight that probably will not happen".
"Clottey wasn't the fighter we were hoping to fight, but considering the short list of possible opponents, we felt he was the best,” continued Diaz. “We haven't had the best of luck with regards to Tony's activity in the ring or being able to get that big fight, but we have faith that 2007 will be a big year for Antonio and Top Rank.”
A tough Ghanaian, Clottey (29-1, 18 KOs), who is coming off a majority decision win over Richard Gutierrez last month, will not be a walk in the park, as his style has posed problems for everyone he has faced. His only loss is a controversial DQ against reigning WBC welterweight champion Carlos Baldomir in a fight which by all reports, he (Clottey) was clearly winning.
Margarito (33-4, 24 KOs) will now have to focus on Clottey, knowing that any setback at this point will let many of the named fighters who have been targeted by Team Margarito off the hook.
Clottey is also ranked # 4 by the WBC and # 6 by the IBF.

This is going to be a very very tough fight for Tony against this hard nosed,rough house,reasonably skilled Ghanian. Clottey is good at countering and I can envisage him having his moments during the fight but I think Tony will come through. It will be very tough,this guy was schooling Baldo before he was dqed,he's very tough. He also has a good jab and good body work,this will be a great great fight!

clottey is on par with cintron, imo (dont forget that cintron was coming off a long period of inactivity, and hand surgery when he fought margarito)

yes, zab IS seasoned. as in hes a former LINEAR welterweight champion
as far as cotto, ive seen him fight a couple different ways. brawler cotto gets his ass kicked, he gets rocked by good shots (why do you think hbo has been matching him with malignaggi and branco his last couple fights........its his chin ;)) but the hard punching boxer cotto may beat zab

As for Santos,I've told you the same fooking thing over and over,most at ringside including Puerto Rican fans had Santos losing by 1,it was in his backyard and if he did not fight well,he would not get any big money matches(as he was told by is promoters) and he weight at least 175 pounds. Maargarito was also coming on strong,although I still feel had the fight continued,Tony would have won.

Haha. CC Gamo. True that I dislike Hatton's style. But-- I also think that, while Zab has some trouble with come-forward brawlers, as you point out, Hatton has serious trouble with slick, skilled boxers, especially southpaws (see, e.g., Collazo). So I don't know--maybe they'd both just look terrible and it would end in a movie-style double kayo (a result I wouldn't mind seeing). But I'd give Zab the edge if he was at all focused. He's way too fast for Hatton (not that it helped him against the even slower Baldomir). Anyway, I'm no fan of Zab and am not here to defend him. True that he's been given more chances than most and failed more than half the time. He actually did look pretty good against Mayweather though, which most fighters don't.
I just want to see Margarito vs. Williams. I will concede that I think Clottey could be the tougher opponent (Williams too green, not enough defense), but I think Margarito-Williams would be a total burner definitely ending in a KO, and would do more to amp up Margarito's rep.

I'm not being a smartass but I'm glad Arum finally let The Boogeyman comeout and play....Clottey should be a good test for him and see if he can progress to the Monster hype they are pitching to us
I personaly would of liked to see him take on Williams, but At least Margarito's finally getting his azz in the ring.............
