Welsh boxing sensation Joe Calzaghe now on HBO

Welsh super middleweight sensation Joe Calzaghe (41-0, 31 KOs) has left Showtime and will make his first appearance on the cable giant HBO this fall. His 19th title defense, against Cameroon’s Sakio Bika (20-1-2, 13 KOs ), will be on Saturday, October 14, at the MEN Arena in Manchester, England, and will be broadcast on HBO’s Boxing After Dark.

HBO’s Senior Vice President Programming, Kery Davis, commenting on the addition of Calzaghe to HBO’s sterling roster, said “We are extremely pleased to be able to bring this exciting fight to our subscribers. Joe is clearly one of the brightest talents in the sport today.”

The Pride of Wales won the vacant WBO title on October 11, 1997, when he twice dropped former two-time world champion Chris Eubank en route to a one-sided decision (118-109, 118-111 and 116-111). But the knock on Calzaghe has always that he was a protected fighter, protected by his promoter Frank Warren, and wins over Charles Brewer, Byron Mitchell, Robin Reid and Richie Woodhall did little or nothing to change that perception.

What finally did change that perception was Joe’s single-minded destruction of then-undefeated Jeff “Left Hook” Lacy.

Now, Calzaghe’s 19th title defense will be against Bika, who while not a household name is unbeaten in his last 12 bouts extending over a four-year period.

Boxing after dark is about right for the kind of opponent Calzaghe is facin. Least we get to watch it for a change.

Haha! Thatta boy. Little harsh, but aside from an Old Eubank, Old Brewer, Old Byron Mitchell, and recently Jeff Lacy, Calzaghe's resume ain't exactly full of world beaters. And BestP4P, I ain't got a digital camera or nothin, so I'll have to use a friends sometime and post a pic of myself. Gonna need a wide angle lense to capture all of my muscles though.

I like Joe and he has earned my respect and admiration after beating my Boy Jeff "Left Hook" Lacy although his resume is lackluster he showed he can rise to the occasion, but Lacy's team had to relentlessly pursue Calzaghe's team to make that super bout, I wish someone with that much potential should take the cream of the crop fights at this stage, I'll say it again I dont know if it is Joe his management team or even Warren that is content with having a majority of C+ fighters on his championship resume.....

My gripe as of late is that Floyd Mayweather haters and critics are quick to point out and say Floyd is a record padder and dosen't deserve his accolades and his undefeated status, but SOME of the very same people will laud and decorate Joe Calzaghe and his championship and undefeated status hell his overall legacy(which he certainly deserves)........

Let the truth be told people at 28yrs old Floyd Mayweather has already FOUGHT TOUGHER COMPETITION and has a more impressive resume pound for pound than a 34 yr old Calzaghe.. it's really a sobering thought and a reality check that should speak volumes of were PBF stands and his impending place in Boxing history..

Dont get me wrong I am a converted JC fan and am excited about his style and what he represent to the sport I just think at this stage he should be looking for a big fight or move up to 175 to challenge himself I think signing on with HBO is a good step in making the above referenced things happen. ;)

I would have liked to have seen more big name fights but Jones Jr even Bhop (2 of my favourite fighters) have beaten highly regarded as well as more mediocre mandatories. Hasnt PBF had his fair of coasting up in weight over the last few years. Even the better opponents have had issues beforehand against opponents that got there first...

Calzaghe deserves his name in the pound for pound list and lets see him have this easy fight and then see him finish out his career in a way that might just make ya think a little bit differently, Hulk. It might just happen yet..

It might, but he'll have to have about 3-5 SUPERFIGHTS, and win them very decisevely, before he is on an equal level with Bernard, let alone Roy Jones. Beating Jeff Lacy, doesn't equal Dominating Tito, Oscar, Tarver. Or dominating Toney, Ruiz, Griffin, Paz, Reggie Johnson, Virgil Hill, etc.

yes hulk i recently for first time watched couple jones fights and i have to say i was very impressed

It would be interesting to know why he has now gone with HBO, when Warren seemed to have a understanding with Showtime.

Talk is of Joe moving up to lightheavy to challenge Clinton Woods, dont know how concerete this is though. He was ringside at the Woods Johnson fight and he was asked after if he fancied it, to which he answered yes. Only problem Joe may have is if HBO would want a Calzaghe Woods fight ???

Warren is one of the best at milking his fighters. I would suggest it has more to do with Warrens matchmaking than Joe not being ambitious enough to conquer the US.

If you want to say that kind of S*** about Calzaghe's opponents...you need to be grown up's & also look at some of our American champions resumes.

They aint sparklin with every bout either & a lot of the fighters that Joe beat easily were decent fighters when he beat them...just like our American champions.

40 wins is 40 wins...just like with Jones, Mayweather, & Hopkins.

No when Hulk gets mad, he corrects your stupid remarks. Calzaghe makes fighters from overseas come to him, and fights consistently sub par competition. B-hop and Jones fought fellow American top guys by and large, and defeated them impressively. There is a differnce.

Im not totally sure. Im no Calzaghe hater I think he's a great fighter, I just don't see it being the exact same scenario as far as fighting at home... The thing is, there is a difference between Wales, and the United States... a HELL of a difference. why would Floyd or Bhop travel, when the most revenue and tv ratings by far are generated in their own country?? I mean really, name one great p4p fighter who isn't American, and never fought in the US. I can't possibly think of one, eventually the mainstream money and exposure draws all the greatest talents from overseas.. My only gripe with Calzaghe is that he has never left his own country to fight, but it is a big problem for me... He has absolutely all the tools to beat anyone in his division or light heavyweight right now... All he has to do is come to the states and do it. I just don't see why he never has.
