Punching the jab arm

ok, I sparred today, a 17year old kid, big bugger. 6-1, 230 or so. Good defense, and far more experience than me, and more reach. We didn't go hard but he defintiely won on the score cards. He doesn't hit nearly as hard as me but he had good d and I couldn't get inside and I like to model myself after Mickey Ward. Anyway, so I took another approach. Every time he dropped his jab hand a bit I (tried to) T off on his shoulder. I wasn't even concerned about his chin... just his shoulder. Again, he has a lot more experience so I couldn't get at him so I went for what I thought would put him on his heels.

I got him really good once and he winced, but how effective is this really? Am I wasting my time? Anyone have any luck with this mode of attack? I've enver really been jabbed in the shoulder time after time so I don't really know.

Another thing I was trying to do was throw a "right hook" really a looping right/rt uppercut to hurt his forearms when he shelled up. Any thoughts on that?

when someone paws with theyr jab or just keeps it out there so i can get too close and too keep me at range i love to give them hard hooks and uppercuts theyre left arm.... its a bastard for overswinging if you miss but you get used to it and after youve bashed theyr left arm up and its hurt you move a bit out of range nad let them try to set the tempo with a near enough dead arm and theyr jabs arent fast enough strait enough or high enough and i jus keep leanin back and countering a strait right over the top !

It depends on how many rds you have....If it's a short fight 3 or 4rds ( depending if its pro ,amatuer and at what level) and you can manage to keep getting them just on the inside of the shoulder towards the chest...You can score points and hurt the arm.....In a longer fight tear the arm up...hit with rights jabs and hooks... If the arm is hurt you take the starch off it's power or ability to use it often....Marciano use to do this on a regular basis he would throw hooks to the arm like they were KO punches....Worked like the old HS charlie horse game....The guy cant hold his arms up and throw punches as effectively...Leaves him open all day...Just don't concentrate on nothing but the arms....

never really thought about weakening them like that didnt even know it could be a legal move but now that i think of i dont see why it wouldnt be legal your just beating up there arm.. which would take a toll on the body and would like others said make them not through straight or fast jabs thats an awesome idea :o

yeah, this kid had impregnable defence. He also counter-punched well which made it hard for me to get in close. His arm was my ony decent option. I learned a thing or two though.

I had a lad try and do the same thing to me, my arms where all black and blue the next day, but coming into the third round he could barely keep his gloves up, just countered so he didn't over shoot me to much on points and basically just teed off on him in the last round.

I'm pretty fit but it'd have to be a long pro fight or you'd have to be in with some one with weak arms and shit conditioning for it to be really affective with amatuer scoring

Tis why I said not to focus only on the arm and try to hit the inside of the shoulder keeping the punches in scoring range for the amatuers...Most judges want to see the body jerk after a punch landed in amatuer boxing this way is shows effective clean hitting and the front of the face and inside of the torso is where the scoring is now based...A shot to the inside of the shoulders will cause the shoulder to jerk back making it clean and effective in the judges eyes

oh yeh definately... or you should jus tap it to the side and quickly band to the body ok hook them..
learnt that from my trainer doesnt matter how fast,hard or big theyr arm is a quick light tap is all you need to stop a punch... basically a parry theyr so simple but so effective... i love it when people shoot straits rights of a jab to the body i like to parry it with my opposite arm leaving a nice big space open to hook the body.... its painful when you get caught so cleanly

Whenever someone I'm fighting shells up, I usually try the old "Lead hook that JUST misses their head, but accidentally pushes their arms out of the way just enough for my right straight to sneak in right behind it."

For big fellas that keep it extended or over commit with the jab ;Try slipping to the outside so their jab goes over your inside or rear shoulder and uppercut under their arm pit with your rear arm as you move through with your feet,then drop a lead bomb over that arm as it comes down in its natural reaction to whats just happened.
You are moving into saftey for the short time it takes.

yep, good one. I tried that and just missed his ribs. Then his trainer yelled keep those elbows tucked in. So I'm on the right track. I also defo needed to bob and weave more to get inside on such a big guy, which is all I've been working on the bag. jab jab left, jab cross right, etc. Until now I've always been more of a punch and shell kind of guy. Time to expand the arsenal even if I get clocked while working on it.

he did it a lot to Joe Frazier in their third fight... that I can tell you for sure, I just watched it the other night.

Marciano knowing that he needed a KO was wailing away at the fore arms of JOE. The relentless Marciano attack took its tole on Walcott who eventualy would drop his arms giving Rocky the opportunity to land that classic shot which would ko Walcott and go on to become one of the most famouse boxing pictures of all time.

Excellent Adam . the residual effect of hitting your opponent on the shoulders and arms comes mid to late rounds, and in the amatures no time to get the desired effect, and thus you will lose on the cards. When you are the shorter fighter , you must be the busier fighter ,hands always need to be in motion and you've got to crowd or rush your taller opponent and learn to cut off the ring , stay on him like glue. conditioning is very important in boxing, but even more so for a shorter fighter, you got to work hard to stay on the taller rangier fighter, especially with quick breaks via referee interference which ( always favors the taller fighter ) . if you allow the taller guy to tie up, a break is coming quickly, you must be in great shape and must keep the hands in motion to keep the action at your desired range .

Fought at loads of different weights, and in the army too, so he as often the shorter fighter... quick hands and he would be busy all the time.

That's what he trys to develop most in us, speed, work rate and defence.

i was thinking of joining the army or one of the other branches of military for boxing but not sure which ones have it

Here is a very very simple way to shorten the arms of an opponent with long arms and a busy jab; the funny thing is that it is THE natural counter in boxing and very difficult for him to counter.
Here is the premise: the motion you make to slip his jab so that it passes over your right shoulder- slipping it to the "inside" position- is the exact same motion as you make to throw a straight hand. He jabs, you step slightly forward and left with your left foot shifting the wt to your left leg, etc...Your step far enough to drop your body low enough so that you are able to drive a straight to his heart; in the early days of boxing this was a legitimate ko punch and still would be were the average "modern" fighter schooled well enough to throw it. Throw this punch and come back with a left uppercut or weave outside with a hook to the body or chin. However you do it this punch will discourage his jab in short order.

If I am not mistaken the Army and the Marines both have a decent program...I know my business partner from the gym Vince boxed in the Army for a fact....I am trying to think who had a pretty good amatuer run in the Marines???...A pro at the moment...Either way they both offer it

hey grey, ive been thikning more and more recently that getting your opponent to commit to his jab - that is, so he really steps in with it - should be the main starting point for the direction of the fight to unfold from. so many nice counterpunches to use should this be established. you would have to stand so that you lean a bit back and to the right (the traditional stance) though as this is the extra distance that they try to compensate for.

Thats nice ,a natural move and a heart interupptor!

Your head is moving towards his rear arm as you slip ,with practice you could extend that arm slightly to cover the path of his rear hand with your left glove while your executing the right to the heart for safe keeping.
Specially if you do it more than once that way you may be chokeing out his next move already if he is just comming forward with a feint the second time around.

A variation (IF he is really comming forwards hard); could be to pull your left leg back slightly which also places that jab over your right shoulder as you throw your straight right and then cover from his rear glove and correct your footwork instantly under your next move . That keeps you out of range of that rear arm and can give you distance to adjust and catch him with weight and movment off your next punch .

All this stuff you mention deserves alot of fore thought.

Here is another set of simular situations that was written up by my old friend Jesus Rodriguez who passed away after setting up his web site...so we lost the pictures unfortunatley as the site went down. Punchers/Movers will be able visualize it...I like the feint turned in direction and made real.

Lesson # 1: “The dissuasive jab; feinted to the solar plexus”.

In this lesson we are going to see 3 things:

1-How to throw a jab to the solar plexus.
2-How to jab to the top feinting a jab to the solar plexus.
3-How to use this feint as a dissuasive weapon against an opponent who tries to counter your jab to the bottom with a straight right.

The great Sugar Ray Robinson was a master throwing this punch. And like him you can even throw it against shorter opponents.
A good indication that you are throwing it properly is when your arm is parallel to the floor at the punch’s contact.

A long step and bending your knees to the maximum guarantees the proper arm position. Also bending from your waistline and leaning your upper body to the side are important points (see picture# 1).

Picture # 1. - There are a few minor points that you can adjust in this picture so as to suit varying situations.

Lets suppose that you have thrown a few good jabs to your opponent’s body; the next time, you are going to feint throwing it low and go to his head instead.
For you to succeed you have to look at his body until your punch makes contact, also you must bend and lean your body as if you were throwing a real low jab . (see picture # 2).

Picture # 2. - Of course you can throw this jab even before you start
throwing your low jabs.

It is more fun when facing an opponent who is highly confident in countering your jab to the bottom with a straight right hand (see picture # 3).

Picture # 3. - Your opponent has once again tried to counter with his right hand but you have made him pay for it!

I see from re reading it , that it also incorporates both the lean to the side and the step forward that you both have mentioned.
