The fight that first hooked you on boxing....
For me it was the Big John Tate-Mike Weaver heavyweight title fight...first fight i ever watched, for fourteen rounds I was bored outta my mind watching Tate easily outbox Weaver and then in the final round....bam...hook off the ropes and Tate is done...I think to this day it's those sudden fight turning moments when a guy appears beaten and bewildered and then somehow against all odds pulls out a last minute victory...that keep me hooked on this wondeful sport.

Re: The fight that first hooked you on boxing....
Lester Ellis Vs Barry Michael for the IBF world lightweight title. Barry held Lester up for most of the last round, just so it would go the distance.2 aussie warriors! Also as a very young boy i saw a bout on TV where someone from the crowd,in Oz, jumped in the ring and started belting one of the boxers. Before you knew it, the ref beat the living hell out of the ring intruder. The refs name was Charky Ramon, an ex world champion. That was awesome, that idiot who ran in the ring ended up eating steak through a straw for months. :badass:

Re: The fight that first hooked you on boxing....
Watching Tyson fight his way to the undisputed Heavyweight crown. Watched as much as I could at that time. Then I started losing interest when all of the good fights went to PPV. IMO PPV has ruined the fan base of boxing.

Re: The fight that first hooked you on boxing....
John L. Sullivan v Jake Kilrain.
That was a great war, I was only young but I was there in my ancestor's ball-sack, and really enjoyed the atmosphere and everything.
I was also at the fight between Castor and Pollux, just before the Trojan War, but that was different reincarnation, so I don't know whether it counts.

Re: The fight that first hooked you on boxing....
I remember watching alot of Hearns/Hagleer/Duran/Leonard/Holmes fights with my pops as a young boy but I think the one that hooked me was 12 or 13 years old and watching the Taylor vs JCC fight. Everything you love and hate in boxing right there.

Re: The fight that first hooked you on boxing....
I was with my uncles. I was 5 or 6 in the mist of a party filled with beer and green smoke. The fight was Sugar Ray versus Donny Lalonde. I vaguely remember Ray being knocked down early. Later in the fight, he finished off Donny in exciting fashion. I remember Donny lost his voice in the post fight interview.

Re: The fight that first hooked you on boxing....
Well, there's only one man who figures in two of my earliest boxing memories, and that is Chris 'The Cwith' Eubank, who was such a showman, and hardly ever had a dull fight, at least, i ain't seen one or remember being one that dull.
The two fights are Eubank v Benn, but most importantly, being Welsh and caring for the first time who won, it was Calzaghe Eubank. Cracking fight, went the distance, and both men were (mostly) sporting and both really put up a really good fight.

Nunn handling him for the first 6 or 7 rounds, Toney starting to come back and then that left hook that was pretty much it.

Re: The fight that first hooked you on boxing....
You guys that responded to this thread are younger then me, I was in the 3rd grade and it was ALI vs Fraser, I won 50 cents on that fight, A big bet for an 8 yr old kid, but I wasn't able to see the fight live, I think it was the first fight people had pay to see it live, I do remember they had it at Cobo Hall in Detroit via sattelite or something. I was watching fights before that but can't remember who they were.
Pay Per View is what ruined boxing and has taking it away from the general public, now only the hardcore fans know who the fighters are, when I was a kid all the big fights were on ABC Wide World of Sports and everyone knew who the champions were, but back then we didn't have 4 or 5 champions in a division plus some of these divisions didn't exist.

Re: The fight that first hooked you on boxing....
1 fight got me back into liking boxing
Through the Tyson years it was easy to like but Wladimir Klitschko-Charles Shufford got me big into boxing...I had never seen a big guy like that BOX so well and have so much power in both hands
