leonard supposedly beat hagler and i always said b-hop reminds me of marvin but i gotta say marvin looked stale in the leonard fight hopkins i would give the edge to and see it kinda going the way the leonard norris fight went. what do you guys think?
-
Re: leonard vs hopkins at 160 who wins?
It doesn't matter what happens in the fight, Leonard would get the decision

leonard was well shot when he fought norris it would of been different story if they would have meet in his prime

Re: leonard vs hopkins at 160 who wins?
I would give it too sugar, it's hard for me to understand when B-Hops prime was, his greatest victory was over Trinidad and that's when he was 37 (Very Old) but that's when he looked his best.

Re: leonard vs hopkins at 160 who wins?
im gonna have to go with b-hop i think he would edge a close decision
-
Re: leonard vs hopkins at 160 who wins?

Re: leonard vs hopkins at 160 who wins?
I would actually have to say Hopkins many of you would disagree but I'll tell you why....
Leonard was good at showboating and goading his opp...He was also a better plain out toe to toe guy than many give him credit for...EG the first hearns fight...Ray also frutrated his opponents in his favor....Hopkins would not fall for this...
Ray wouldn't get Bernard off his game plan with taunts before the fight just make him mad...But a mad hopkins is a guy still in control...He showed that in his fight with Tito and again with Tarver shit talk doesn't rattle him....In the ring Hopkins is versitile but wont be made to fight anything but his fight...Many of Rays opponents had such a hard time because he was able to make them do exactly what he wanted....Try to out box him...Try to out brawl him he knew exactly how to keep them doing what he wanted and then woulkd change at the last second to confuse them...They tried to hard to beat him at his own game...Hopkins fights his fight not the other guys....I go with bernard by decision not a blow out but close

Re: leonard vs hopkins at 160 who wins?
Please! Ray Leonard would have danced around for a few rounds then the hand speed would
take over and Bamboozle Hopkins !
Leonard by late stoppage !!!!!

sad click, just for the sheer stupidity of that post.

Re: leonard vs hopkins at 160 who wins?
Hopkins would win. And he would win in the same fashion in which he beat Oscar.
-
Re: leonard vs hopkins at 160 who wins?
Leonard would win because he's too active

Are we talking the Hopkins against Taylor or the Hopkins against Echols? ;)
Whiaker vs. Morales thread "The Whitaker that stood and got pummeled by Trinidad?"

Re: leonard vs hopkins at 160 who wins?
Ray Leonard uses his fast hands and boxes to a decision.

Re: leonard vs hopkins at 160 who wins?

Expose??? I don't think that's the word to use....You don't expose a Gold Medalist and six time world champion,,,Who practically was in every major fight against major opponents through out the 80's
-
Re: leonard vs hopkins at 160 who wins?

:appl:
I am not a Leonard fan, but the man had everything.
He could outbox the best boxers around, he had every punch in the book, charisma, speed and power. He moved so gracefully in the ring it was unbelievable.
And underneath all the pretty boy smiles, he was a ferocious competitor with guts and heart in abundance.
He could choose how he wanted to beat Bernard, I'm afraid. he wins a purists boxing match, or he wins a slugfest. If Benitez couldn't outbox him , B-Hop wont. If Hearns couldn't stop him, B-Hop wont. If Duran couldn't frighten him, B-Hop wont.

Wilfred Benitez has no part of this argument, since Leonard at 160 was not the same fighter he was at 140, Benitez at 160 cannot be compared to Hopkins at 160. P4P Leonard would beat Hopkins I have no doubt, but realistically if they met up at 160, where Bernard lived and Ray just visited, Hopkins would win.

Re: leonard vs hopkins at 160 who wins?
Leanard only boxed as a middleweight once, not having boxed for 4years, and won a tight one against some mug Marvin Hagler. I did £100 that nite, but witnessed something special a pretty boy with bollocks and the best Oral perception I have witnessed
-
Re: leonard vs hopkins at 160 who wins?
A prime SRL. flurries & speed vs slow methodical breakdowns. wins the crowd over thus the judges

Re: leonard vs hopkins at 160 who wins?
I never liked Sugar so you can be sure I'm not biased here. Those on-ring antics of his always irritated me. Everytime he started taunting his opponent, I'd be shouting, "c'mon smack him, smack him hard and teach him some lesson." But...... I have to admit he's the best all-time p4p, IMO. He had everything, almost, except maybe the heart - he was sometimes a bit intimidated and tentative like when he fought Duran for the first time. But when he was confident, he'd let it all out and most certainly, it ended in a KO. He had the best punch, or one of the best at least. Believe me, I know my punch. If you want to see the best of his punches, see him brutalize Le Donde (did I get it right?), he unloaded everything on the poor fellow.
So I think if he can beat Hagler after a long absence, I think he can beat Hopkins in his prime. Ok, ok, there some who say Hagler beat him, but let me tell you something. I downloaded two version of that fight with Japanese commentators and I'm sure some of you got hold of them too as they're lots of them circulating on the net. The Japanese commentators, including an ex-champion, had Leonard clearly winning that fight. So why do I think he can beat Hopkins? It's simply because I think Hagler is a better boxer than Hopkins. But what if Hopkins 'hit and hold?' Leonard is no Tarver so I think he will be able to get around it with his skills.

Couple of things
1. Are you saying you think SRL is NO.1 ALL TIME P4P? I have him top 3 btw.
2.I think SRL had great heart.....Name me another fighter that came back after a four year lay off after just recovering from eyesight issues to fight one of the most feared middleweights of all time? He fought the best and ducked nobody IMO, yes including The Hawk.

About the heart, maybe not exactly but I did notice him sometimes somewhat reluctant to take risk and trade shots, again, the best example being the Duran I fight. There was so much hype that time about Duran being a legend or having a "fist of stone" or something like that, so Leonard seemed to have got overcautious there. But once he found out that Duran wasn't as strong as he imagined him to be, he let 'em all out in the second fight and remember what happened, the day of infamy when the whole world learned two Spanish words - no mas. Those shots really hurt Duran and I really think it's got nothing to do with stomach upset (did he say that?). I really believe if Sugar Ray would just simply unleash his punches without holding anything back, he would've KO'd anyone during his prime... Check out the thread 'WHO'S the GREAAAATEST???' about 2 pages back, that about sums up all I've said regarding Sugar's heart.

Yeah mate, after the fight he said Ray wasnt 'all that impressive or good at all' and that he quit due to stomach cramps.

Thanks. To avoid howls of protest, let me re-phrase the whole point, I should've said the Leonard had the potential to be the top P4P of all time. But personally, I couldn't think of anyone else. CC for you, pal.

Re: leonard vs hopkins at 160 who wins?
Hopkins would win at middleweight.
As great as Ray was, he was not a middleweight.
He didn't fight often enough at that weight to be considered amongst the greats.
Hopkins by UD for me.
