Fighters who lived off a win.
Ok I want some opinions on fighters that get far too much credit for one win on their resume, due to any circumstances, and try and live off the one performance without trying to use the momentum gained from it. My picks.....
Joe C vs Lacy: I think Calzaghe is a great fighter, and it was an amazing performance... I also think Lacy was nowhere near as good as anyone thought, Calzaghe took no damage in the fight, and could have easily used it to catapult him into another superfight, imo. I know, there aren't alot of names or anything like that, but still it's just been way too long since the win, I was really dissapointed when I heard Bika was his next opponent.
Tarver vs Roy Jones: Of course Tarver did try and follow it up by facing another great fighter, and he got his ass whipped because he never came back down to planet earth after KOing Roy, imo. Same with the Glen Johnson fights really, although he wasn't embaressed and won both imo, that was Tarvers chance to follow up and impress people, and I doubt he trained as hard as he did for Jones.
James toney vs holyfield: Toney could have, and probably still could, land just about anyone at HW to fight, he obviously never even tried to come in the same shape ever again at HW. Ruiz he looked better for but still way too heavy and he was juicing for that fight. Peter as well, he deserves credit for taking the fight, Ruiz and Peter aren't bums, but it's Toney's shape and training habits that make me pick him.
Ricky Hatton vs Tszyu: This one's debatable for sure, because he caught a really tough break with Collazo, he was a HELL of alot better than anyone figured I think, and he didn't get any props for taking the fight... But him fighting Maussa and now Urango isn't exactly heading in the right direction as far as Im concerned.. Hopefully he'll prove me wrong and end up fighting JLC.
Floyd Mayweather to some degree has been living off of every win recently, Gatti and Judah at least.. Id like to see him fight more often and Im not one of the people who feel Baldomir will be a really hard fight for him. Would have rather seen him fight Margarito, honestly, but this isn't really a strong case because Baldomir IS the undisputed welter champ...
Margarito vs Cintron: I know, hilarious huh... But nonetheless, apparently after that virtuoso performance over a p4p great, Margarito just doesn't need to fight anyone at all anymore, not until Floyd gives him a shot. Funny it's been over a year and a half in between fights for him, considering Gomez wasn't even a fight. And I hate how people think he's so feared, he's had plenty of name fighters who wanted him.

Hmm yeah Douglas was a big one to leave out, I just don't really see it being quite the same, because Douglas didn't really try and live off of the win, and neither did Rahman... Obviously they are both huge one hit wonders, but I was also looking for guys who never followed up the wins like they should have done... ACtually, scratch Douglas, your totally right Buster is an obvious pick as he clearly never made any attempt to get back into that kind of shape, CC for the addition you and majesty... But I wouldn't include Rahman, he tried to make something out of his win, he jsut wasn't anywhere near as good as Lewis... I doubt there was much difference between the rematch as far as his condition or training went, and he does deserve credit for trying, unlike most of the fighters I mentioned.

I get your point you are right about that ( Rahman) but truth is even though he had the belt again his win over Lewis will always be what he will go down as being famous for....

I know but he never had a chance to live off it, because Lewis had a rematch clause.

Max Schmeling, over Louis
Fireman Jim Flynn, over a half-starved young Dempsey

Re: Fighters who lived off a win.
It's a bit unfair having Calzaghe there, early days to say so... fair enough he is fighting Bike, but he is still ment to be fighting the likes of Taylor give him a few fights, if no Super fight is made then I will even agree with you.

How you can put Hatton and Mayweather in there is beyond me ? ??? Both fantastic fighters ! and James Toney the guy is one of the greats of all time??

Re: Fighters who lived off a win.
yeah i agree with TARVER since no one would give a F about him had he not fought RJJ.

How about Paulie Malifaggi vs Cotto?
Ooops, I forgot he got his azz kicked by Cotto. My bad.
Damn! I guess all the good answers have been taken.

I agree Calzaghe is a great fighter he had been living way before Lacy came into the picture ;)

Re: Fighters who lived off a win.
Courtney Burton did off his win over Manfredy for a while. But that's all over now.
-
Re: Fighters who lived off a win.
Douglas-Tyson is the best example IMO.
Rahman-Lewis.
Tarver-Jones i agree on.
Clazaghe-Lacy.....Calzaghe was obviously already well recognised as a good fighter but this showed just how good he really is.(top draw)

Re: Fighters who lived off a win.
Jones over James Toney. hahahaa

Well, Sergio is my homie and when ever the Manscaredo cronies dis my homie I just remind them of the fact that Sergio has beaten Peter 3 times and also that a little fat kid named alfonso beat him too :)
VIVA LA RAZA!
But since I have to add something here, I will have to add that Peter is living off of beating an old 79.6 % retarded guy named Scott Pemberton who needed money and is one of Peter's best friends. (Can you say fix?) Scott never threw a punch in 3 rounds. I don't think Peter is exciting at all. (he is nothing but hype) I guess if your idea of watching a guy in a skirt boxing is your idea of exciting, so be it. If Peter had any balls, he would accepted Sergio's offer for a rubber match but Peter peed on himself. Then he went around saying Sergio did not want to fight him. That is a lie. I have the tapes where Sergio calls him out 4 or 5 times in the same room the night after the second fight and Peter did not want none. He has his fans tricked and I don't know why his fans can't see thru him. Must be a Providance lust thang or something. A lot of my friends just don't get it and I know a lot of folks here don't get/comprehend/understand this huge Manfredo lust people have. The dude sucks! Plain and simple.
BTW, Lords Gym don't take my post too personal. This ain't really intended for you. The cronies know who they are. I hope you ain't a Manscaredo cronie too. I am always out numbered by these guys. LOL
