Greatest British boxer of all time
I really want to hear from you guys in the UK. Who was the best British boxer of all time? (All opinion no right or wrong answer)
-
Re: Greatest British boxer of all time
Jimmy Wilde, Bob Fitzsimmons, or Ted 'Kid' Lewis.
-
Re: Greatest British boxer of all time
Nigel Benn - I am a big fan of Ricky Hatton in the modern era ;) both are very exciting crowd pleasing fighters.

Re: Greatest British boxer of all time
There will never be another Sir Lennox

Re: Greatest British boxer of all time
well if i had to choose....obviously im goner say my faves....nigel benn...jus above chris eubank
but it has to be lennox the lion... cos he the one that got the biggest titles and took the biggest fights... he was no where near as entertaining as benn or eubank but he won the big fights and the big titles and quit on top ...which i respect the guy for....
theres ricky hatton... hasnt quite made it yet but i doubt he'll disapoint...
and naz was good... too cocky but a great fighter who could have probably if he had of picked that one big fight right.. maybe he'd have beat morales or another great featherwieght ...but he picked barrera and didnt make it as big as he could have so he doesnt have top spot..
n steve collins is jus there... never a big fan .. i jus found him ..ok lol :P
peace

I still don't buy it that lennox was proper british, the same way as I didn't buy it when Vinnie Jones said he was welsh to play for the national football team. He may have been a large percentage british, but to quote the HP ads....he wasn't greasy spoon and chips n gravy british :p
Anyhow, my favourite British boxers current are Calzaghe, Alex Arthur, Hatton, Clinton Woods, andTyson Fury (still an amateur...never seen him fight, but that name and growing reputation must mean he's a bright prospect.
As for all time, I'd agree with those who said Eubank, Henry Cooper on what I've heard from my betters, and Welsh legend Tommy Farr. Then again, my knowledge on boxing before 2000 is pretty sketchy on the whole I'm afraid, but that's my two-penneth worth anyway.

Re: Greatest British boxer of all time
Yeah,
Number:
1. Chris Eubank - Arrogant and likes to pose.
2. Naz Hammed - Same as above.
3. Nigel Benn/Joe Calzaghe?

Morales would have handed Naz his ass imo, although it would have been more of a war what with MOrales tendency to brawl.. But Naz still couldn't stand up to him I don't think, he'd crumble badly and may have even been stopped.

youre not wrong... but i see it at two extremes....
either naz would out box el terrible in a close fight....
or erik would knock naz out... i think barrera could have but he jus had a solid plan to stick to..
would have been sweet to see morales naz thou no doubt!!

Re: Greatest British boxer of all time
Has to go to Wilde.......
About Naz IMO Marquez, Pacman, Barrera and Morales are all too good for him, just simply a cut above him.

EH I wouldn't bet the house on it...Naz had a better chin than most realize...Hamed went down a lot more due to the fact he was off balance a lot with his awkward style rather then hurt...Plus he was a DAMN!!! hard hitter......Not saying Morales couldn't have neat him but you make it sound like a walk through....At that time no one was just walking through Naz...I think he underestimated Barrera and thats why that fight turned out so bad ( it was ugly actually) for him...Again I am not saying if he was more prepared he would have beaten Barrera just wouldn't have been so bad...Hamed is defiatly one of the best in his division of all time

Yeah if Naz was at his best I wouldn't count on it... But I was responding to a post which stated Naz's mistake was simply picking Barerra to fight.. I think that his mistake was he stopped training hard and wasn't focused.. If he fought Morales INSTEAD of Barerra, under all the same circumstances, is what I meant.. and I think then Morales would have beaten him just as bad, and even had a chance to stop him in that form. And I don't buy that Naz underestimated MAB, it was obviously far and away his toughest opponent yet.. He just had been overestimating himself, for several years even imo.

Why not ? He was born in this country and fought unde the British flag as a pro so what is there to dispute
As for Nas - I think he may have beaten Morales if he took th eother route cuz Erik was easier to hit and cant box as well as Barrera but public demand forced Nas to meet the real winner Barrera . Big mistake

Re: Greatest British boxer of all time
Havent seen much of the old time fighters but from my era id be stuck between Eubank and Calzaghe, Probably side with Joe if he can get 2-3 more BIG fights.
Hatton could overtake the lot though if he finally gets his team in order and gets some of those BIG BIG fights out there.

Re: Greatest British boxer of all time
nigel benn in my opinion is the best british fighter
-
Re: Greatest British boxer of all time
Got to be Jimmy Wilde for me, I have seen quite a lot of footage of himand he was fantastic
Ted Kid Lewis, Lennox Lewis, Randy Turpin (Just fro beating SRR) Bob Fitzsimmons, Ken Buchanan
just to name a few
-
Re: Greatest British boxer of all time
Of the British boxers I've watched I'd say:
1) Chris Eubank - I think the best all round fighter we've produced
2) Naseem Hamed - Although he could of been number one if he kept up his training.
3) Lennox Lewis - because of who he has beat
4) Nigel Benn - Because he was so exciting to watch
I think Calzaghe will be in there by the time his career has ended

Agreed - the 'Ghost with a hammer in his hand" was the best fighter to come out of Britain bar none. !!

Re: Greatest British boxer of all time
There's no question that Eubank could of been the best British boxer ever IMO, but he just wasn't in love with the game (hated it, infact).
Still the most entertaining of gits though :)

Re: Greatest British boxer of all time
Barry Mcguigan and Duke Mckenzie deserve honourable mentions, horrible commentators, but great champions.
