Ten Most Exciting Fighters Today
By Ted The Bull Sares
I have listed them alphabetically and if you want to call me cowardly, go right ahead. You would be right. My recent top twenty list was a learning experience in the same manner that a fighter learns from tough bouts. I took a lot of heavy shots including some low blows and a number of [sarcastic] jabs. This time I didn't use any strict criteria as much as I used my own reactions as I have watched each of these warriors in action. I am sure you could post some that I left out or could list them in some order with most exciting first and so on. If so, have a go.
Jorge "Travieso" Arce, 44 (35) -3-1, "With blood flowing from a wound that made him look like a second-place finisher in a machete war, relentless Jorge "Travieso" Arce scored a brutal 10th round TKO over Hussein "Hussy" Hussein to win a classic battle in a WBC flyweight title eliminator." A typical headline for an Arce fight. And his blow out of Hawk Makepula on Saturday took less time than the Hawk's walk in. Fans worship him and he loves them back. He puts on exciting fights in the tradition of "old school” Mexican fighters, but with more flair. Nobody knows what would happen against another very aggressive brawler of equal stature. It might boil down to "quien es mas macho?" or who lands the biggest shots first. In this connection, a fight with Flyweight, Vic Darchinyan (26-0, 21 KO’s) at a catch weight would be great. Darchinyan is about as exciting as Arce and what an exciting battle it would be. The entire Arce package is one great big exciting experience.
Jorge "La Hiena" Barrios, 46 (33 ko's)-3-1-1. He always comes to fight and like Ricardo Mayorga and most of the others on this list, would rather die in the ring than quit on his own. His fight with "Popo" Frietas was pure courage as was his recent set-to with Joan Guzman. No trips to the refrigerator during one of his savage brawls.
Middleweight Alejandro "Naco" Berrio, a 30 year old Colombian bomber who has Ko'd 24 opponents in 25 wins and is an extremely dangerous fighter, but, like fellow bombers Bob Satterfield, Tommy Morrison, Julian Jackson and arguably Jaime Garza, the downside is that he does not take a punch very well — he was stopped in all four of his losses. And that makes him super exciting....and my personal favorite as well. Just don't blink or you might miss the end. If I listed these in order of excitement, "Naco" would be no lower than second.
Lamon "Relentless" Brewster, 33 (29 ko's)-3, Aside from Wladimir Klitchko, the only exciting heavyweight out there and the only one on my list. His fights with Wlad, Golata, and Lyakhovich were all barn burners for as long as they lasted. In September 2005, he survived a severe beating by German-based Luan Krasniqi only to ice Krasniqi in the 9th round, while behind on all cards. As fellow writer Frank Gonzalez Jr. states, "success in the ring is usually the result of a combination of things, like speed, power, heart, boxing skills or stamina." for Lamon Brewster, it is usually relentlessness and that makes him exciting.
Diego "Chico" Corrales, 40 (33 ko's)-3, perhaps the purest form of warrior in boxing today. Can render a ko or be ko'd and will fight to the end. Never in a dull fight. Hopefully, he still has something left after all of his wars. We will soon find out. His first fight with Castillo may have been the most exciting in years.
Ricky " Hit Man" Hatton, 41 (30 ko's) - 0, Non-stop, incoming brawling and lethal body punching make me a watcher and a fan. A loveable and humble chap outside the ring, he changes once inside the ropes and becomes a cold, merciless and relentless warrior. In December 2005, Hatton was named the 2005 Ring Magazine Fighter of the Year. Enough said.
Antonio "Tony" Margarito, 33 (24 )-4 -0-1, his savage style earns him a place on my list. His ten round stoppage of Sebastian Andres Lujan can only be described as brutal. He then beat another Puerto Rican, tough Kermit Cintron, dropping him four times on his way to a fifth round knockout. In February he iced Manuel Gomez in the first round for the WBO Welterweight Title. He is an exciting fighter pure and simple and a big fan favorite, though Daniel Santos seems to have his number.
Floyd "Pretty Boy" Mayweather, 36 (24 ko's) - 0, He is undefeated since making his pro debut on October 11, 1996. And since 2005, he has been rated by The Ring magazine as the number one pound-for-pound boxer in the world. Incredibly, he has won four world boxing championships in four different weight classes and we may not yet have seen his best. Clearly, he is one of the most talented young fighters in the world. Blessed with speed, power and great defense, he is presently at the top of most Pound- For-Pound rankings in the world. As a 'purist," I find the level of his all around skills not only uncommonly high, but exciting to watch as well. Fighters like "Pretty Boy" don't come around that often.
Erik "El Terrible" Morales, 48 (34 ko's)4, "Macho time" for real. In fact, his propensity to brawl even when unnecessary (he is an excellent boxer) creates a vulnerability that simply adds to the already considerable excitement factor. The last round of his first fight with Manny Pacquiao speaks volumes about Morales. He will always fight to the level of the fight and if it's a brawl, then that's the way he will go. Indeed, he has stated explicitly that he always wants to "excite the fans."
Manny "PacMan" Pacquiao, 41 (33 ko's) -3-2, Probably the most exciting fighter in the sport of boxing today. Simply put, he is a warrior. Rarely in a boring fight, this tough crowd pleasing Philipino has knocked out both future hall of Famers Erik Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera. If he stays focused and continues to train hard, his chances for induction into the Hall will be high, indeed. A rubber match with Morales has been scheduled and the excitement meter is rapidly moving toward 100.
Honorable mention:
Vic Darchinyan, 26-0, 21 KO’s, a fight with ARCE will be pure "explosivo."
David Diaz, 32 (17)-1-1 is one of the best kept secrets in boxing. This former Olympian has been delighting his hardcore Chicago fans since 1996. His nationally televised sensational 10th round ko of Jose Armando Santa Cruz for the WBC Lightweight Interim Title on August 12 put him on everyone's radar sceen and they liked what they saw. And as ring magazine pointed out in its latest edition, "we haven't heard the HBO team so shocked into silence since Mickey Ward vs. Alfonso Sanchez." That in itself made me a big fan of this exciting "never say die" warrior.
Juan "Baby Bull" Diaz, 30 (15 ko's)-0, The "Baby Bull" assumes a bull-like approach to his opponents. With tremendous hand speed and punching volume, complimenting his aggressiveness and great body punching, he creates continual excitement in the ring . However, he has often been criticized because of his inability to ko his opponents out. Nevertheless, he has been somewhat under the radar screen and when more people see him fight, I think they will concur with me that he brings special excitement into the ring.
Roy Jones Jr, 50 (38 ko's )- 4, with the new and very real possibility of being knocked cold, his fights now take on a new dimension...almost a cat and mouse quality. What happens if he gets hit with a bomb? For me, that adds up to excitement, particularly with what he already brings to the table. Altogether an intriguing, if not compelling situation.
Wladimir Klitchko, 46 (41ko's) - 3, You never know what can happen at any time and that makes him exciting enough for near inclusion on my list. Against Peter, he was down 3 times though he prevailed. Against any heavy hitter, he may be in danger and issues about stamina linger. Yet, like Gatti, his fights will fill the area a to capacity and there is a reason for that. Barley missed inclusion on the above list.
Ricardo "El Matador" Mayorga, 28 (23 ko's)- 6 -1, his fights with Andrew Lewis, Forrest, Trinidad and De La Hoya indicate that he will always excite, whether in defeat or victory. Explosive brawler who can close things out decisively if he gets his opponent hurt. Mucho macho and lot's of courage, but may not have much left in the tank.
Edwin "Dinamita" Valero, 20 (20 ko's) - 0, 19 of this Venezuelan's 20 ko's have been in the first round! In 20 fights he has only fought 30 rounds! Now that's excitement. The problem is it doesn't last long enough to really enjoy. Not enough rounds to get top billing here, but it's really not his fault.
Paul "The Punisher" Williams, 31 (23 ko's) - 0, The younster put on a spectacular performance last time out against Shamba Mitchell but there been little news since. I think he has all the tools in his arsenal to give the big guns serious problems in the 147 division. Williams v. Quintana would answer a lot of questions. Williams vs. Judah would be interesting as well. But I think his best bet may be with Kermit Cintron and Margarito, of course, looms. All of this this makes for much excitement as does his freakish height and reach along with solid skills.
Note: Arturo "Thunder" Gatti would be included, but it's not yet clear if he has retired. Based on this, I left him off the list, but if he decides to fight on, he has a place waiting for him between Corrales and Hatton.

Re: Ten Most Exciting Fighters Today
De Managua, Nicaragua..."El Matador" Ricardo Mayorga!!! That's right bitches! God it sucks hard he lost to Oscar, but he is still very exciting. I hope he comes back someday to win his 4th world title. He has to be hungry though, like he was back in the days of Forrest and Six Heads Lewis.

Re: Ten Most Exciting Fighters Today
Margarito would be on the list of course

I think Hopkins is a great fighter, however his style is not that exciting to me for some reason? I admire him, but not over the top thrilled by him. ? just personal preference .

PBF, best of the last 10 years? Yeah, fuckin right. Maybe if Roy Jones Jr. had never been born, maybe then. Or maybe best of the last 3-5 years, but not ten years. By 1996, ten years ago, Roy had dominated B-hop, James Toney, and avenged his DQ loss to Montell Griffin. By 2006, PBF has gotten one gift decision against Castillo, avoided fighting Tzyu, beaten Gatti, Judah, Corrales, and is preparing to face Baldomir.

When Roy fought HOpkins b hop was noone, he was just a belt holder for Roy to launch his career with, and he certainly didn't have an easy time. Toney, was seriously weight drained for their fight I don't care what anyone says. Sure Roy probably would have beaten him anyways, but he was not in good form. Griffin was a pretty good fighter, but Roy didn't exactly blow him out of there in the first fight, Montell won some rounds convincingly. PBF has faced fighters who are easily as good as anyone Roy ever fought, perhaps not legacy wise but on the night of, Castillo and Judah were p4p every bit as good as anyone Roy beat.. And Floyd is a much more fundamentally sound fighter, not that you'd know anything about that. He doesn't have the power or dazzling reflexes of Roy JOnes, but he is a much better boxer. IMO Floyd is the best p4p fighter since Pernel Whittaker, they are both better than Roy JOnes in my mind.

CC. Athletically RJ's pretty much superior to anybody, but Floyd's better technically, more fundamentally sound.

I'll take a guess and say you'll move Erik up and drop Margarito down...Or maybe drop Hatton a spot or two.

You take away RJJ's biggest wins yet EXACTLY the same principle applies to Floyd~(Castillo was not well known when he first fought Floyd, definitely not P4P top15 even and won the first fight) and Corrales was EXTREMELY weight drained too(like Toney alhtough I think Diego's situation was far worse as he didn't get full training for the fight and had prison in is mind).
Mayweather may very well be more fundamentally sound etc but I think RJJ had by far the better resume,Erik Morales has fought and beat better fighters and has awesome skill,MAB,Oscar's fought just as good fighters,Winky so no way is Floyd the best fighter of the last 10 years! Not yet anyway!

You are a fukin idiot. Or least you are actin like it on this subject. "B-hop was nobody..." Maybe at the time he wasn't reverred as a great champion, but as time has told us, he is. And I don't care if Toney was weight drained, easy to claim that after you've had your ass handed to you. It's a moot point as Roy woulda beat him anyway, and James had two close losses to Griffin, least one was legit, and RJJ KO'd Griffin twice. They call the first fight a DQ, but Griffin was bein KTFO. Did Roy Jones EVER need any gift decisions in his prime, or after it for that matter? NO. Did PBF, YES. And after bein upset by Baldomir Judah was not on anyone's P4P list anymore, so shut up. RJJ would beat either PBF or Pernell if they were in the same weight class, Roy Jones was faster than both. God, you must HATE Roy Jones to say such stupid crap. ::**

Re: Ten Most Exciting Fighters Today
Having seen the fight on friday night between Duddy and Campas, I'd petition that Duddy would deserve an honourable mention at least, it was a cracking fight, and an absolute stormer, it swung back and forth from start to finish, there was blood all over him, he could barely see, yet he still came out on top. Even if he doesn't get on the list....surely there's an up-and-coming list by excitement that he should be put on! Not a great boxer, but a good fighter with the heart of a lion. A green irish lion indeed.

CC. Athletically RJ's pretty much superior to anybody, but Floyd's better technically, more fundamentally sound.
I know I am always quick to point this out but Floyd is just as gifted athletically than Roy, Floyd relies on his fundamentals and Technical skills and defense 1st..Which he is light years ahead of Prime Roy in all of those departments...As far as reflexes go if you watch Floyd he is excellent at anticpating punches and can pull the trigger and create combos that dont appear to be there...I agree Floyd dosent have the one punch power Roy had, but I think his sharp accurate punches just cut up his opponents like a surgeon and are equally as devastating..
People call me crazy and Sad Click my a** to the hill when I say this but I'll say it again....
I am a huge RJJ fan of epic proportions but.............. Floyd is on the cusp of greatness and when he finally decides to hang em up he will have a better legacy than Roy and will be considered one of the Top5 to ever lace them up

Re: Ten Most Exciting Fighters Today
Joe Calzaghe has to be on that list, the guy can box and he can also fight it out as he has proved with his wins over Byron Mitchell and many others.
-
Re: Ten Most Exciting Fighters Today
IMO not enough big wins to be on the top ten, but an honorable mention for sure

Ok fair enough, but if your going off big wins, why is Cotto in your list? IMO Calzaghe has fought better p4p fighters than Cotto.
-
Re: Ten Most Exciting Fighters Today
Cotto IMO has taken bigger risks inside the ring, choosing to brawl when he could easily of just boxed, prime example is his fight with Torres, and also he's in a division where there are HUGE names, that's the bad thing bout Calzaghe, not that he doesn't want to fight huge name opponants, there just aren't that many around his division

His fights with Evans Ashira, Miguel Angel Jimenez and David Starie (good lord was this bad) show Calzaghe can be boring as hell

Violent Demise, The reason I did not Include Bell was due to his borefest with The Cowboy. Yet after his energyfest with Mormack, I was tempted. On balance, he has the goods. IMO

#1: Floyd Mayweather jr. Flashy, fast, dominate, technical...best of the last 10 years. Nuff said.
#2: Manny Pacquiao. Took me awhile...but damn he just blasts 'em out.
#3: Erik Morrales. Always loved the all heart, all guts, all boxing battler.
#4: Winky Wright. Damned right. Laugh all you want...but Wright always outsmarts 'em all...& that's what I love about a boxer.
#5: Jeff Lacy. Provided he can come back...I love Lacy...explosive.
#6: Joe Calzaghe. Technical, accurate, speedy, power, & heart...I love Calzaghe.
#7: Jorge Arce...I don't think that I really even need to get into that.
#8: Wlad Klitschko. Up & down, now that Vitali is gone...what choice do I have? The guy is skilled & he's one of the more exciting heavies of the game currently.
My last two & all timers...
#9: Bernard Hopkins. The master tactician...whether or not he's in or out...he's just my guy & he always get's me going for the game.
#10: Oscar. Oscar always has & always will be an exciting fighter...hell an exciting persona of boxing to me. He's done more in & out of the ring than anyone in the game of the last 20 years. Like my guy Bernard, whether or not he's in or out...he's just my guy & he always will be. Love him or hate him...Oscar is good for the game.
PBF, best of the last 10 years? Yeah, F****** right.
I don't really agree. Castillo was maybe not well known, but he was still an excellent p4p fighter, who was the newly crowned lightweight champion coming off of 2 great wins over Stevie Johnston who was an underrated champ in his day. Bhop had no amatuer career, he was definetly still learning his trade when he fought Roy. As for Corrales and Toney, you may be right.. But I didn't even mention Corrales. Even still, Toney was hooked up to an IV overnight before the day of the fight, that's how badly he had drained himself. Maybe Corrales case was just as bad, either way Floyd completely humiliated Corrales dropping him 5 times and stopped him, Toney still made it 12 rounds. Roy Jones had the 3 great wins in his career, and they spanned over 10 years. After he beat Toney he didn't fight one excellent fighter for another 9 years, moving up to HW and beating Ruiz was obviously a great win though. I don't think Roy has a better resume AT ALL. On paper, he has more belts... But the people he was defending against for most of his light heavy reign were appaling, imo. Not to say I don't think he's a great fighter, of course he was.. I just feel Floyd is better than he was, and I'm almost certain he will go on to have a better legacy. I also doubt he'll be brutally KOed back to back as soon as his speed fades in the slightest, because he is much more fundamentally sound.

You are a fukin idiot. Or least you are actin like it on this subject. "B-hop was nobody..." Maybe at the time he wasn't reverred as a great champion, but as time has told us, he is. And I don't care if Toney was weight drained, easy to claim that after you've had your a** handed to you. ::**
Hulk, why don't you go rub two brain cells together and see if you get a spark.
