UNSANCTIONED BOUT BRINGS ABOUT DEATH

Palm Desert, CA-A 16-year old boy collapsed and died after boxing in what authorities called an underground "fight club." Jefferson Pitner died Sunday after fighting at least three rounds in a Palm Desert park, where he had gathered with eleven other boys, authorities said. Pitner, who lived in Indio, died of head injuries at Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, said Sgt. Earl Quinata, spokesman for the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

FATAL FIGHT BEING CALLED A HOMICIDE

Quinata said Tuesday the case was being investigated as a homicide, but authorities hadn't made any arrests and "had no evidence of criminal intent." Authorities were reviewing photos taken by one boy with a cell phone camera.

Quinata could not say when results of an autopsy, scheduled Tuesday, would be made public.

The boys started the group several years ago and have met regularly, Quinata said, but he did not know where the boys fought or how often. Each fight lasted one to three rounds, and could continue for several minutes.

This should be up in the training section for all those 'backyard boxers'. 8)

I saw a guy die in bootcamp from a boxing match, it was more of health problems than it was of a beating, some people need to see doctors before they fight on any kind of level even illegal street fighting.

Man, this is just another example of how sometimes kids' fun will jsut go too far. Everyone's had playfighting that has got a bit out of hand, and this was probably just one of those things where the kid didn't want to shame himself and fought for longer than he should and took too much of a beating. I'm thinking either that or he fell and cracked his head. Not sure if "fight club" actually glamourised it, but whatever it is it is a sad loss, and no one should have to lose their kid in this kind of incident.

I was in an underground fight club in CHICAGO and to be honest no one really got severly injured or killed maybe because we all had a firm understanding on the rules and submission and when to cease fire. but then again we were young and dumb as well. ???

Reasons like this I often mention in articles about boxers and the after effects they suffer from long years of ring wars....If guys like Taylor, Herans, McClullen, Norris can suffer i'll effects from boxing( and thses guys were regularly seen by some of the worlds best doctors)...There is no reason to think that it can't happen to the average guy.....Pro wrestling has a big problem with these so called underground type events....

See what a bad press the sport gets. This was not a boxing match, it was just fighting. Problem is there is no good headline saying "16 year old killed in fight" because it happens all the time.

If everyone who committed suicide by jumping off things coud be linked to, say springboard diving (maybe they were practicing their triple-axels), would everyone want to ban diving??

Anyway, one less shellsuit-wearing idiot (especially one who can't even fight properly) is probably helping the gene pool.

I am with raleights on this. It happens you just deal with it and move on. It is worse when someone gets stuck on it and cant move forward thats when problems start.

I have had several people die that were close to me. This happens to be my coping mechanism. I believe that you cant get caught up in the why and just know that they are in a better place for a reason.

You know whats bullshit, that people who can laugh about the steve irwin jokes and say they dont matter to the victims family and then when somebody they know dies they have a whole different perspective. Its like coz he was famous, who gives a shit, say what ever you want. I had a teacher recently who told me none of the stuff going around about steve irwin would bother his family, then a student at the school died and she got right up a person for saying the same thing. Double standard bullshit.
