Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Calzaghe vs Bika
Once again my fellers & fellerettes...it's on!
Yes siree! This Saturday October the 14th, 2006, my favorite Welshman is braving the friendly skies & deep waters as he heads stateside for the first time in his proffessional career.
Just kidding. But...to all my Yank brothers...those that have missed out...Joe can be seen gracefully tipping his hate via a tape-delayed session on HBO’s Boxing After Dark...but tape delay or not...we still doing this fwockin RBR...& drunk I might add. Heh heh heh.
Now...all that being said...let's get into a nice lenghty discussion about the matter at hand & also...let me remind you that you got 5 more days to line up the shot glasses & chill the poison of your choice, come Saturday night...put your game faces on & empty your stomachs...it's time for another installment of Wacko's Drunken Round by Round featuring Joe Calzaghe (41 wins with 31 ko's) as he defends his titles against Sakio Bika (23 fights, 20 wins, 1 loss, 2 draws, & 13 ko's) at the M.E.N. Arena in Manchester, England.
Wacko couldn't be more thrilled about the up & coming date.
All kidding aside...I'm really excited about this fight...also the fact that the Kessler Beyer match might show up side by side & hand in hand kinda has ole' Wacko's palms sweating...& you know what happens when you combine "wack" with "sweaty palms" right?
Go ahead & front bitches...but I know that you know. Heh heh heh.
Now...as I was saying before...all kidding aside. I'm as happy as a pig in fershizzle about this match up...so without further delay...let me jump right in with both feet as I read off to you what I've begun to affectionatly dub: The Wackster's Factors of the Fight:
Factors for & against Calzaghe:
Factor #1: Speed. Joe's got it...in overwhelming amounts. He's shown it for years in previous matches...but he proved in his last bout that he aint that old yet. Silencing critics him threw some 1200+ punches against "then Super-Star" Jeff Lacy. If the old saying of "Your'e only as good as your last fight." holds water...well...then Bika is about to get his ass handed to him in a big way. Joe's gonna show stateside...& in the back of his mind that's gotta be there...so I honestly believe that Joe's gonna show out. That thought leads me to this...
Factor #2: Global Awareness. Joe's going world wide baby. Every screen in every boxing house around the world will most likely tune in. When (back to his definining moment regauarding the destruction of "then Super-Star" Jeff Lacy) Joe bested Lacy over on Showtime...he shocked the world. For most boxers, HBO is the honey pot at the end of the rainbow & Joe will most likely be mentally geared towards making another statement to silence the critics who flipped like a pancake on the myth of Lacy after Calzaghe squashed it. This I fear is going to be what might work against Joe. Bika is not the easiest nut to crack. Ask the WBC's Super Middleweight Champion Beyer. The luck of the Irish caught up with Beyer's German ass during his title defense against Bika. The fight was stopped in the fourth round on a cut under Beyer's right eye that wascaused by an accidental headbutt...so they say. Beyer was taking great deal of punishment from Bika...& I aint so sure that cut came from a butt. Either way...Beyer kept his strap & Bika walked with a draw & a bad attitude. Calzaghe needs to keep his mind & eye only on defeating Bika by any means necessary...not impressing HBO with his style & abilities like he did against Lacy when they fought on ShowTime last March. Bika can fight people.
Factor #3: It's been a bit since Joe's been in the ring...& the reason for that? Yet again, another hand injury. This is something that's been bothering me all weekend long as my brother & I were discussing it. Joe's hands might not hold out against a chin like Bika's. Oh yes...the kid has a pretty good beard. One name of mention...Sam Soliman. Soliman wailed on Bika's noggin' all night long & nothing good came out of it. Granted Joe hits much harder & much more accurately...this worries me. Can Joe's hands hold out...& what if he damages them on a defense such as this? I want a Kessler showdown.
Factor #4: I'm gonna lump these altogether because I believe that they are all in Joe's favor: Speed, Stamina, Experience, & Power. Joe's got all three of the above & he's got them in bunches. Truly...in the end...I think that Joe will win by TKO...& that's how I've voted...but stranger things have happened & IWO, Bika was taking Beyer down a long road that he was having trouble traveling...but once again...Beyer does not equate to Calzaghe...& this is Joe's time to shine.
Factor #5: 1200+ punches. Just do it again Joe & let's put this check in the bank & move the fwock on.
Factors for & against Bika:
Factor #1: Experience. Clearly this is against Bika...honestly, after seeing Beyer vs Bika...almost everything is against Bika...& I know that I aint supposed to be biased...but I just think that Calzaghe is going to be waaaaaaay too much for Bika. When Bika fought Beyer...not a lot happened in the first 2 rounds (...& I aint sure exactly who's fault that that was.) but in the third Bika was getting to Beyer. After the butt...Beyer came out with urgency & established a minor lead...hence him keeping his titles. That fight was really REALLY worthless as far as gaging Bika...again...hence me hating to say that everything is against Bika, but unless Joe has a bad night...Bika's gonna get the chop!
Factor #2: Speed, Stamina, & Power. Joe's got Bika topped in all three of the above. I honestly think that this is going to be a mismatch, couple that with the fact that I have loads of faith in my guy'z abilities...well...like I said...Bika's gonna get the chop!
Factor #3: Hope. Bika better hope that Joe's injury rears it's ugly head or that Joe ate some bad shell fish.
Factor #4: 1200+ punches from Joe & once again, he'll be putting the check in the bank & hopefully moving on up...to deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelux apartment in the skyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy! Move the fwock on up. Seriously though...I don't have a lot of tape of Bika. Two fights only. It's bad for me to pass judgement...but this is Wacko's Drunken Round by Round...right?
Factor #5: Pray. Maybe Bika needs to start praying that brother Joeseph comes in "heady" after the Lacy show...maybe Joe comes out & over performs & Bika can either last 12 rounds...or maybe catch Joe in the middle of one of his infamous wide open "Calzaghe's the Greatest Show on Earth" combos. In Wacko's Opinion...that's the only way that Bika wins.
Prediction: Vicious TKO by Joe Calzaghe.
Cheers & koneecheewah bitches.

Re: Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Calzaghe vs Bika
should be an easy night 4 Joe, ud or maybe late stoppage.
hopefully his hands come through ok and he gets a big superfight next year!
-
Re: Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Calzaghe vs Bika
UD for Joe C. I think he will do enough to prove that he is still Joe C. but not to much (got to look after the hands).
Oh and cc wack.
-
Re: Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Calzaghe vs Bika
tko for JC he aint gona lose and we all know that! but im personally looking forward to the undercard matthews-foster and enzo-hobson..........good night of boxing i think!
-
Re: Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Calzaghe vs Bika
CC. Ah its boxing and its on TV, I like Calzaghe but not a big enough fan to get really interested about a matchup like this. Still like I said its boxing and its on TV so I'll definitely watch it.
Can somebody tell me whats going on with the Kessler-Beyer fight, last I heard was "extended highlights." Is that true or are they showing the whole fight.
I'll go Joe easy UD, agree with TyBuff's thinking on the fight.
-
Re: Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Calzaghe vs Bika
Now then folks, IM BACK and nobody even noticed that I was gone!!! :'(
Right, back to the boxing!!
Calzaghe will beat up this chump something rotten. A mismatch IMO. Its not a fight to get all that excited about really, but it is nice just to have Calzaghe back in the boxing ring....
Not quite the follow up fight after beating Lacy that I wanted, but I hope he takes this and then fights the winner of Beyer: Kessler....
Thats the fight that I really want to see above all others. Johnson will be old anytime soon and Jones Jr is all washed up...those fights say nothing to me right now in the tail of 2006....
Unification and then perhaps look further afield for new challenges...
Bika will be punished...

I can't wait to just see Joe again period!
As far as Kess goes...unfortunately...I had heard that they were gonna pull the highlights horse shit...then I read that the fight wouldn't even show.
Stupid! Pisses me off.
Show that shit as the undercard!

Agreed. I hope that it plays out smoothly.
I want my fellow U.S. citizens to get a good showing from brother Joeseph.
A Super Fight for O7 would be nice.

Oh and cc wack.
I'm still sticking with TKO.
I was wondering that very thing...about him doing just enough to protect his mitts. Personally...I want to see him go for broke & blast it outta the park!

Agreed...on all fronts..cept the undercard. I hope somehow...someway...Kess Beyer get's pushed in as the undercard...I'm holding out hope...what can I say?

Agreed all the way around babe...& glad your'e back.
Beyer Kess is a fight I actually want to see...& then the winner to Calzaghe...mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...bar-bee-que! ;D

I would like to see a TKO also, but I think unless the fight is unexpectedly tough that Joe C. will just put it on cruise control. Then go for another big fight early next year.

I noticed you were gone mate. A cc for you and to the police, who put out an APB for you and dragged you back from the edge of that cliff near Whitby....your performance in the sportsbook ain't quite up to scratch but it ain't worth jumping for dude. ;)
As for Bika, he's leaping off the deep end into a fight he's never even be clos to before. I don't think it'll go the distance. Calzo will swamp him as he did with many of his earlier opponents, and Bika will go down, or the ref will stop the pain. Either way, there is nothing but victory for Joe here.

:coolclick: for jumping on board early...here's the thing.
Beyer is a good boxer...he just seems to have aged to quickly...but back to that fact...Bika was putting up a pretty good fight against Beyer...& he can put shit together fairly well IWO.
Maybe Bika will surprise us & bring more to the table than we all expect.
If so...watch how many people turn thiat shat around on Calzaghe. If Joe don't produce a TKO or atleast a severe beatdown...he'll catch some flack.
I hate that shit.

Re: Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Calzaghe vs Bika
I went with Decision Joe, I'm leaning towards this being another one sided win for Joe.
But come on Joe get in their with some real fighters I give you props for the destruction of Lacy but like your country man, Hatton you guys are going in reverse.
It's like having your Prime T-Bone steak served 1st, then following it up with a Brocolli & Potatoe soup. It just doesn't work that way.
-
Re: Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Calzaghe vs Bika
Good news for Bika is...
Before the Lacy fight, Joe looked like he was slipping.
He looked "sluggish," "fought down to his opponent's level," started to get "long in the tooth."
The way Joe fought Lacy that night, he should have had all KO's on his record, early too! :o
Joe just fought too good with Lacy. But he's "not consistent."
Bad news for Bika is...
HBO picked HIM for a reason. One of them is he's no Collazo! ;)

I will have you know that I was at Whitby for entirely legitimate reasons!!! I was trying to set a Northern England cliff diving record. The police only got involved because the locals reported me. I was just doing a little screaming and shouting to motivate myself for my challenge, but the locals got all suspicious. Still, there is always next time for my erronerous cliff diving escapades!! :)
CC, back to super heavy for those caring words and a CC to the Wack one for being as reliable as ever. Wont be a classic but its always good to see Calzaghe in action...
-
Re: Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Calzaghe vs Bika
Heart says bika (he lives in aus and everyone here always likes going for the local fighters as you guys know)...but my head says calzaghe destroys him.
-
Re: Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Calzaghe vs Bika
Joe is bang up for this one ;)
JC inside 9 rounds.
9 years undefeated :o
He's a living legend.........
-
Re: Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Calzaghe vs Bika
Seen this Bika guy and he kind of wings in punches from all angles and rarely takes a backward step, Joe will pick him off with fast combinations ;)
Calzaghe's in-tight hooks will win him the day in three or four rounds..

You see, that's what I like to see. None of this pussy-footing around like i do, trying to look at each fighters merits. Nail your colours to the mast boy...have an opinon, support someone for hell's sake! Naah, I gotta agree really, but I'm trying to maintain my cool unbiased exterior!

Honestly, I don't remember Joe being sluggish other than against Ashira...& again...honestly...Joe aint that long in the tooth...so to speak. He's made minced meat out of his opposition...so there haven't been but a couple of "wars" for Joe to endure.
Not being arguementative...but for discussions sake...which fight is it that you consider that he "fought down to his opponent's level"?
I've got all of Joe's fights on tape other than maybe 2 or 3 of his first shots out of the gate...& I'm just curious as to what your'e talking about. Other than the Ashira matter...I can't recall that many slips. Sure he's been hurt...but he gutted it out to win.
Again...not argueing...just being curious.

Huh? You mean, he should have KO'd Lacy? Not sure what you mean. Joe's got a pretty good KO percentage amongst his many wins.

Ha. Now that is pretty funny. The problem is...there aint a Collazo at 168lbs...the only legit threat MIGHT be Kessler. Joe already smoked the fire of 168.
Again, I just hope that he's recovered from the hand issues. Another thing is...I just hope that he's properly motivated...I mean he had to get up for Lacy...let's just hope he doesn't sell himself short this go round...
Doubt that'll be an issue.

Re: Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Calzaghe vs Bika
calzaghe is easily going to win this fight ko or decision
-
Re: Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Calzaghe vs Bika
Bika and Calzaghe may as well dress up as kinky sex fiend deviants as far as im concerned with Bika playing the gimp.
That is how badly i expect Joe to Dominate him ringwise!! O0
-
Re: Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Calzaghe vs Bika
Why is JC fighting this guy?Is it just for exposure and that there was no one else to fight? I hope he impresses.
-
Re: Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Calzaghe vs Bika
I think he should go all out for Hopkins,Jones or Taylor.
That'll line his pockets and make everyone in the US sit up and take note after he batters either of said trio ;)

Agreed. I think its a mixture of a layoff and the influence of Mr Warren. Glenn Johnson to this? Its absurd really. Calzaghe should devour Bika like I devour English breakfasts after years away from home. Brutal and messy! ;D
-
Re: Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Calzaghe vs Bika
I agree,I think Calzaghe should hunt down the big names!! Now is the not the time to be taking tune ups,he should have made the Jones fight happen or even Taylor.
-
Re: Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Calzaghe vs Bika
Its going to be the 'JC Show' and basically a tune up for Joe. I expect him to blast out Bika.
I cant get exited about it as its not so much of a match as a demonstration and tune up.
Tc

Re: Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Calzaghe vs Bika
If Bika forgets how to move his head then Joe will hit him 1000 times. But if he shows head movement and a few boxing keys Joe can look ordinary. He just had the perfect opponent in front of him in Lacy imo. Not discrediting what Calzaghe did. But if Calzaghe was THAT good he would always look the way he did with Lacy. And if he did Lacy wouldn't have been favored. And one performance shouldn't define how good he is, its whether he's consistant with it imo.
-
Re: Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Calzaghe vs Bika
As far as the why...regarding Bika...I would say (& this is only Wacko's erpinee-ern) that it's a bit of Warren, the layoff/injury, & the fact that he has to show out big his first go round on HBO.
If he blasts Bika out...impresses us Yanks...Joe's as good as gold.
-
Re: Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Calzaghe vs Bika
Excellent write-up as always,.. I got Joe winning a Desison, i think its a tougher fight then one might realize. I look for a much closer fight . Cool Click for the read Wackmaster ! ;)

Woah Wacko. :o
Remember. It's me. :'(
Well take it easy there. ;D
I just wanted answers from a Calzaghe fan and I got them. heheh
The reason I have so many quotation marks is this is because these "phrases" came from
respectable writers before the Lacy fight. So I can't back them up, because Joe is
a well kept secret. I wish I could have seen him more. I've basically seen one older fight
and a few clips of others. And the Joe that fought Lacy looked like he'd kill 90's Jones Jr.!!! hahaha
..... well I won't get THAT carried away.. but he looked Spectacular to say the least.
Seriously, that handspeed and that ... what? ... 1900 PLUS punching stats, whatever it was,
was just UNHUMAN! He made Lacy look like he was fighting in mud, he was so rapid in flurries.
The performance was SO good, I don't think he'll ever live up to that fight again..... unless it's
a big fight. I have a suspicion that Joe Calzaghe only gets up for big fights. Because had he
always performed as well as he had with Lacy, he'd already have a deal with HBO.
Bika is not a threat and not worthy of HBO. He's only meant for the debut of Joe Calzaghe on HBO.
I only mentioned Collazo because we all knew he was dangerous from the get go and afterwards
Hatton paid for it... Ricky won... but the Hatton Express took a stop afterwards.

Too right Fenster, if you look back over many of Calzaghe's fights he has looked impressive, usually except when a spoiler comes in looking to take him the distance. Kabary Salem was the typical example of this, who came in looking to go 12. At the end of the day Calzaghe is an exciting fighter when the hands hold up, and the opponent turns up looking to do something other than tie him up every time. And even when the opponent does that, Calzaghe will out work and win on points.

Re: Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Calzaghe vs Bika
I just watched Bika-Beyer to see what Bika was like, first things first though I am fascinated by German entrances. I mean there was Abraham's smurf thing, and now Beyer has this German techno music with this dude with a mohawk singing while they had like 20 girls dancing in this I don't know scaffolding or something while Beyer walks to the ring.
Bika's allright I guess, his jab and right hand are pretty good but he can't trade with Calzaghe, his combinations are slow and wide, Joe should force a fast pace cause Bika's only chance is to try to get a slow pace and jab and throw the right hand. Head's like a statue too, doesn't move much at all. That being said he could have easily gotten the first three rounds against Beyer.

Spoken like someone thats only ever seen one Calzaghe fight.
Too right Fenster, if you look back over many of Calzaghe's fights he has looked impressive, usually except when a spoiler comes in looking to take him the distance. Kabary Salem was the typical example of this, who came in looking to go 12.
So you're saying that he only doesn't look impressive when his opponent doesn't come in to lay down?

You obviously dont rate Calzaghe. You obviously havent seen many of his fights too.
Am I correct in my assumptions? ::**

I rate Calzaghe very highly and was impressed with him against Lacy. I was just asking questions. And nope I haven't seen many Calzaghe fights and I don't act like I have either, if you properly read what I say. READ my first statement.

Naah man, what I was saying was that it is very difficult to look good when someone comes in looking to spoil, looking to run away, and looking to stop you punching rather than looking for a win themselves. Have you ever seen an entertaining fight where one boxer really doesn't want to be there? There ain't too many examples (and I await your list ;)) that I can remmeber.

I don't get what you mean. Let me address my questions to you ok I'll quote what you said. :)
"Naah man, what I was saying was that it is very difficult to look good when someone comes in looking to spoil, looking to run away, and looking to stop you punching rather than looking for a win themselves."
Thats the same with all boxers. You mentioned Salem, did he knock Calzaghe down? Mitchell didn't run.
But so you're saying that they are looking to come in and spoil, but survive? And not get stopped right? Or are you saying they come to fight? I don't get what you mean.
"Have you ever seen an entertaining fight where one boxer really doesn't want to be there? There ain't too many examples (and I await your list ;)) that I can remmeber."
No there's not many, but McCall and Lewis was funny while it lasted.

Re: Just another one of Wacko's Drunken Round by Rounds Calzaghe vs Bika
Yeah, what I meant was that they're coming in to survive and spoil. Man, I tell ya, Mitchell v Calzaghe were two of the best rounds of boxing I've seen. They were both all-action and went in there to knock seven shades of s**t out of each other.
Salem did knock Joe down, but it was one high point in a dreary fight from him. But as he's hsown time and again, getting knocked down isn't too much of a problem for Joe, and his attacking style will leave him a little open. That's why people though Lacy would win, but he wasn't quick enough to catch him open. I'm sure Joe'll look impressive come Friday night, it won't go any distance at all I'm sure, unless Bika springs a big surprise.
