CAN CALZAGHE BEAT JOE LOUIS 25 FIGHT UNDEFEATED RECORD...?
He'll be around 37/38 years old if he can pull it off which is a BIG ask and he'd have to stay injury free.
That is what motivates him NOT ££$$$££.
Which is why he is the fighter he is today.
Would love to see a UK fighter (especially a Londoner) pull this off. 8)
What do we think?

yep easily if he dont move up in weight

Re: CAN CALZAGHE BEAT JOE LOUIS 25 FIGHT UNDEFEATED RECORD...?
Well hes on 19 straight unbeaten defences so far and 26 (beating Louis by one) would be 7 more fights.
That's a long time fighting under Warren ;)
Joe is 34 don't forget and is partial to hand bother ;)
-
Re: CAN CALZAGHE BEAT JOE LOUIS 25 FIGHT UNDEFEATED RECORD...?
I think for this one we have to look at Calzaghe's comment himself. He himself has said that he has only 3 more fights before he retires, so that would only take him to 22 succesful fights, and that is if he stays at SMW, where he was struggling at the weight a few years ago. Even though more recently he is more comfortable at the weight, can anyone really stay at the same weight they started out as 15 years before? It would be a hard task for him, and I don't see him having the desire to do it. If he beats Kessler, and unifies the division after Bika, that will be one massive achievement, and then a victory to win a Light-Heavy belt is really the extent of his ambition.

Re: CAN CALZAGHE BEAT JOE LOUIS 25 FIGHT UNDEFEATED RECORD...?
and i think he would wana move up aswell for big fight
-
Re: CAN CALZAGHE BEAT JOE LOUIS 25 FIGHT UNDEFEATED RECORD...?
Its not that he cant just that he wont. Like superheavy said Joe C. himself stated he only had 3 or 4 fights left.

His hands can't take 7 more fights I don't reckon :(

Re: CAN CALZAGHE BEAT JOE LOUIS 25 FIGHT UNDEFEATED RECORD...?
Calzaghe has 2 more years left in him. Tops. Anything more and we will be seeing a fighter on a slide. Past the age of 35 and Calzaghe's phenomenal output will begin to drop and that along with his speed is what makes him such an awesome spectacle....
Plus the hands are notoriously brittle...
A few more big wins and then get out of there...Calzaghe is sensible, he wont stay beyond his calling...
-
Re: CAN CALZAGHE BEAT JOE LOUIS 25 FIGHT UNDEFEATED RECORD...?
COULD he? Yes......WILL he? Nope.....he's a brittle fighter he gets injured a lot.
Besides who is there to fight at 168? ....oh that's right Joe will find some shmuck to beat up on. Besides Lacy who has he defended his title against that was any good?
-
Re: CAN CALZAGHE BEAT JOE LOUIS 25 FIGHT UNDEFEATED RECORD...?
The real question is who should he of defended against.
I need educating on the 168 divisions history... ;)

He's fought guys that have held the WBC, WBA, IBF & WBO belts - and I agree that there is nobody he should have fought and hasn't. Not his fault he is so much better than anybody else at 168 for the last 10 years ;)
He has p1ssed me off not taking a big fight after Lacy though
-
Re: CAN CALZAGHE BEAT JOE LOUIS 25 FIGHT UNDEFEATED RECORD...?
His management basically got stuck in a rut. As I keep saying I'd rather he kept active, even if it's against a C class fighter than just sit on his arse waiting for a bigger draw to be available.

Agreed. Bika is not the man to be coming back against, but if Calzaghe sticks to his word and fights 3 times next year and hopefully 2 of them being big fights then all is forgiven...

Mario Veit was 30-0 when Calzaghe fought him, he's 48 wins only 2 losses both to JC
I'd rate him alot higher than the Lacy win.
U can keep knocking him 4 who he fights, but the fact is he beats everyone he fights!
He also travelled to Germany to beat Veit which is more of a risk than most fighters around his weight class have took, ie RJJ, Hopkins, Tarver ;)
-
Re: CAN CALZAGHE BEAT JOE LOUIS 25 FIGHT UNDEFEATED RECORD...?
Lacy was a good one
Here are a few names just off the top of my head considering he could have been fighting top of the line competition in 1997
RJJ
Bernard Hopkins (if he could have convinced B-Hop to move up...I don't hold it against him they didn't fight though)
Mikkel Kessler
Markus Beyer
Anthony Mundine
Danny Green
Allan Green
Carl Froch
Svenn Ottke
Thulani Malinga
Eric Lucas
Thomas Tate
-
Re: CAN CALZAGHE BEAT JOE LOUIS 25 FIGHT UNDEFEATED RECORD...?
I didn't say Veit was bad...that was one of his better fights....Echols would have been a good fight for Joe too
Here are the guys Calzaghe SHOULD NOT have fought
Bika - Joe is old and should only go after SUPER FIGHTS
Kadberry Saleem
Mger Mkrtchian
Tocker Pudwill
Miguel Angel Jiminez
Rick Thornberry

IF he moved up un weight the hand problems would be even worse... He would have heavier hands as a light heavey and would be cracking harder... Your bone mass doesn't strengthen when you move up... Your frame is your frame. He will fight a few more stiffs(Bika isn't a stiff by boxing standards but next to Joe he is)and then take a fight against a decent opp. for some cash and retire... We will never see him in a superfight

fair enough but besides RJJ and Hopkins theres no one else on that list that would be considered
a huge fight! but I agree they would all be better Bika!

Both of which Calzaghe maintains didn't want to fight him.
As for Froch etc... come on Lyle... :P

In that case I could call myself either:

A Scot
An Englishman
Or Spanish...

I'm just going off the top of my head, but at least two of those fights were mandatories for Joe. Thornberry built up a decent record down in Oz, and he became the the mandatory. The others, I believe Jimenez, and Mkrtchian were also mandatory. And as for Saleem, he had a bad rep as a dirty roughhouse fighter, and, Joe did need to prove he could do more than box, he could mix it with the cheating buggers as well. Pudwill was a bum, and just a keeping busy fight. Same as I believe the Bika fight is.

Mandatories?
WBO has no respect for mandatories. Calzaghe has been allowed to pick and choose whatever opponent he's wanted for his entire reign. WBO does nothing whatsoever to force mandatories.
Now if this was because they wanted to leave room for more important fights - it would be acceptable or even commendable. But looking over Calzaghe's record that is not the case.
For this reason alone the WBO should still not be regarded as highly as "the other 3" organisations.

I really want to see Calzaghe fight much bigger names than he is...
He says his motivation is recognition and not money so,
Put your c*ck on the block and take the smaller purses and go after the mega stars stateside 8)

Much as I hate to refer to the *evil one* on the board, Joe's promoter has said that it is probable that he and Enzo will make their American debuts early in the new year. I can't remember where I saw it, but it was over the past day or two.

He has to go to the US in his next fight.

What do we think?
That explains why he didn't ever come over here to fight real competition like Jones or Hopkins ;) j/k I think he deserves it for being undervalued around the boxing world, but he will never get the respect Louis got for it, and i don't think he should either. Louis fought in rough times for people, and he brought inspiration to the world where as Calzaghe is barely known to the average boxing fan.

-
Re: CAN CALZAGHE BEAT JOE LOUIS 25 FIGHT UNDEFEATED RECORD...?
Does it really matter, Louis held one title, the undisputed heavyweight title, not one of 4 or 5 different organizations titles, so in my opinion it will not mean much, just like when Valuev breaks Marciano's record, which I think he will and not because he's the best fighter out there, we all know he's not that good but he's huge and may beat anyone who gets in with him. Including Klichztko and I think he's the best of whats in the heavy division right now, but could he take the clubbing he would receive from the big guy. ??
