Junior Witter-Demetrius Hopkins possibly on HBO next month

Witter could fight Hopkins next month
By Ant Evans: Newly crowned WBC welterweight champion Junior Witter could make a rapid fire first defense of his title on November 25 in the McAllen, Texas.
Sources close to HBO have confirmed that Witter v Demetrius Hopkins - the nephew of legendary Bernard - is a fight HBO are very interested in for their Boxing After Dark card which will also feature Jesus Chavez v Julio Diaz.
Bradford switch-hitter Witter only won the last in September, beating DeMarcus Corley over 12 less than enthralling rounds in London on September 15.
Hopkins, 24-0 (10) is an improving fighter but, like Witter, he has yet to scalp a top 10 opponent.
However, this is a good fight for Witter. The relatively short notice would be a risk worth taking, as the bout would be promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and will give Witter the chance to wash away memories of his dismal showing against Zab Judah in his only other US TV appearance.

Interesting fight, kind of a surprising matchup if it happens

I like Hopkins in that one. Junior Witter is a poser IMO . He just trying to act like Chris Eubanks, but don't have the talent. Witter is a boring watch .

Re: Junior Witter-Demetrius Hopkins possibly on HBO next month
I think its interesting, I still haven't seen much at all of Witter. From what I've seen he's clearly the best guy that Hopkins has ever faced, and the hardest puncher. But Demetrius is faster IMO and maybe better fundamental skills, and he's got better power than 10 KO's in 24 fights would indicate. Both counterpunchers, could be a bit of a feintfest waiting game.

Re: Junior Witter-Demetrius Hopkins possibly on HBO next month
exactly. I just hope people won't fall a sleep before the Main Event. Chavez - Diaz is the fight of the night IMO . O0

I liked the relative ease he outboxed Corley with, and usually Corley can make someone look bad at least ONCE in a fight. But Witter completely outboxed him and made him quit fighting, never seen it done to Corley before. If the fight was boring to some then it was because Corley wouldn't lead and get countered because when he tried that he almost got stopped(or at least rocked)

Re: Junior Witter-Demetrius Hopkins possibly on HBO next month
What you do against a fighter like Witter, is you you don't lead. you have patience, make Junior fight out of his comfort zone. Witter wants to wait and counter . just wait. taunt Witter rather then play to his advantages. actually step back and bait a fighter like Witter , then cash his check when the moments right. ;) . Too many fighters try to chase down these counter punchers all night losing on the cards . and thus play to their opponents strengths. the key is to find away to get the counter puncher to lead off and then press the attack.

I agree. But Witter is quick enough to lead too, he's just not as good at it unless he puts that cross guard up. But I don't see Hopkins not leading. Maybe a year ago, but not now.

Re: Junior Witter-Demetrius Hopkins possibly on HBO next month
Boxing is a lot like Poker . You want to get your opponent out of his comfort zone. when your hurt you put on show that tells opponent that your not hurt. and when your feeling great, you might squint little when you get hit , let your opponent think your in troubles. bait them and then Ba-MM . Pocket Aces ! ;)

Re: Junior Witter-Demetrius Hopkins possibly on HBO next month
I would try to make Witter lead if I was Hopkins. But you've gotta change it up some, lead some but he should make sure its controlled and use the jab first, he's got a quick, long jab (74 inch reach, nice for a jr. welter) which could make it a bit harder for Witter to counter.

Re: Junior Witter-Demetrius Hopkins possibly on HBO next month
Dont think Hopkins is quite ready for Witter yet. Witters fucking boring but he has got good countetr punching skills and frustrates opponents a lot.
Still (mentioned this on another topic) who thinks its disgraceful that this is on HBO yet they dont show Kessler-Beyer ?

Re: Junior Witter-Demetrius Hopkins possibly on HBO next month
YES!!! oh now thats good stuff!! a good fight for witter... and for that thread we had about d-hop the other day i truely think this is a good step up and one he is capable of winning.... i duno how it wil go
but i honestly hope d-hop wins!!
and plus the return of jesus chavez is very good news along with the fact that diaz is a good opponent i expect that will be a good fight... plus im eager to see if chavez is still the same after his incidents, hope so!

I don't know if he's ready or not, well see if it does happen, I do think the choice is a bit odd though, I would have thought they would have picked a guy for his first HBO date that might be dangerous, but not so akward like Witter is. Who fights like Witter, not many people, definitely nobody Hopkins has fought.
I don't have any problem that this is on HBO, its an interesting matchup IMO, but I do agree it was ridiculous not to show the Kessler-Beyer fight.

Re: Junior Witter-Demetrius Hopkins possibly on HBO next month
It does seem a strange career leap though doesnt it. D. Hopkins hasnt really thought anyone with real "contender" status and now hes jumping straight in against a seasoned awkward opponent who's also a world champion. I respect D.Hopkins a lot for taking this risk though.

Re: Junior Witter-Demetrius Hopkins possibly on HBO next month
Honestly...I don't think that Demetrius should be taking this type of fight this early in the game.
I'll be happy as hell if he pulls it out. I think that he's got all the cpabilities of a World Champion...except one thing...experience.
I think he's a little young in the grand scheme of things...but he's been progressing with each showing ever since the first time that I saw him
I hate to look at the down side of things...but I think that D-Hop get's outboxed by Junior...but the Hopkins's have proven me wrong before...maybe they will prove me wrong again. ;D

Re: Junior Witter-Demetrius Hopkins possibly on HBO next month
Dhop isn't ready for Witter and won't be for a long time. I would like to see Dhop fight someone like Chop Chop first

I think D Hop has what it take to win this fight.Hopkins just can't let Witter bullshit him. patience and swift attack at the right moment will get the job done. I look for D- Hop to knock Witter out late or win a DEC. . Witter style of Defense first wont impress anyone in McAllen Texas, let me assure you, the fans there will be tossing bottles in the ring if he starts all that posing and bullshit , ;D.

Because Chop Chop would be a test for him. Dhop won his last fight but it was a tough time, and that guy wasn'[t exactly on Witter or even Corley's level.
I would rather see Hopkins fight Corley first, THAT should be his next step up fight. Would you agree?

Re: Junior Witter-Demetrius Hopkins possibly on HBO next month
IMO this has got to be one of the ugliest Boxing After Dark fights on paper! haha
HBO's BAD is just cursed. haha Ever since that commentator line-up was announced.

Chop Chop would be allright but I was asking why he's not ready for Witter

Witter's style isn't one that a prospect should really face and I don't think Hopkins hast he experience to deal with a style like that, and Hopkins isn't world championship level yet, he still has yet to beat someone in the top 20 at 140 and throwing him in with someone the level of Witter and the style of witter would be suicide. Hopkins needs to beat some top level 140 pounders before he's thrown in with Witter. because otherwise its too fast too soon for him and I really see potential in the kid, but he needs to take his time, how old is he? only 23?

Re: Junior Witter-Demetrius Hopkins possibly on HBO next month
A fighters gotta jump in the lake at some point. might as well be on HBO for the WBC Championship. I mean a fighter could lose to anyone or look bad. when you get your shot you need to take it. Hopkins is 24-0 its time to mix it up a little . Witter has not really fought great fighters , his ledger is shit for the most part. Zab Judah took Witter to school winning nearly all the rounds. . This is a good fight for Hopkins in my opinion . very winnable fight for Hopkins O0

Re: Junior Witter-Demetrius Hopkins possibly on HBO next month
witter would destroy this guy. he is not boring just watch all of his before ndou he had a string of something like 15 knockouts! he also smashed the shit out of ndou and thats something cotto could not even do.

no no mate,, Ricky Hatton is not boring !
I would rather watch grass grow ,then Junior Witter sit there and posture all night long, like he did in his last fight. Hell no ! I think D Hop should beat this guy any day of the week ! but We will see I have been wrong before ;).

Re: Junior Witter-Demetrius Hopkins possibly on HBO next month
In the end...I think that Witter is gonna be to mobile for Demetrius.
Hopkins (D-Hop) is just coming into his own...Witter is (as SSSP said) just the wrong style for Demetrius at this time.
Demetrius hasn't faced anyone that throws out angles like Witter does. Most of Hopkins's opponents to date have just been right in front of him for the duration. Witter aint that easy to hit.
I hate to pick against a Hopkins...but I'll have to for this one.
-
Re: Junior Witter-Demetrius Hopkins possibly on HBO next month
I dont think Witter is boring like Ruiz boring. ::**
He floored N'dou like 3 time in their fight (And regardless of what the main article says, N'dou was a top 10 fighter at the time).
Plus as Majesty says, he made Corely stop fighting and wasnt out boxed or made to look bad for any part of the fight.
Bad dosent include posing BTW ;)
-
Re: Junior Witter-Demetrius Hopkins possibly on HBO next month
apparently not gonna happen, Witter's nowhere near weight and his shoulder's a bit messed up.
Tried to get Souleymayne M'baye but that didn't work, its in Dan Rafeal's notebook that I posted about the Edison Miranda-Willie Gibbs fight.
