'Sugar' Ray Leonard heavy handed or not?!
What you guys think about Ray's power? You often hear alot about his speed and crafty boxing skills but not too much on his power. IMO he could fooking crack at welter, and to go up weights and KTFO Donny LaLonde shows very heavy hands. So i rekon hes a P4P puncher. Opinions?

good puncher out of 10 id rate his power 7 or 6 when he fought flatfooted he had decent power he floored benitez twice so i reckon he has decent power not great p4p puncher but good puncher

Re: 'Sugar' Ray Leonard heavy handed or not?!
Not a P4P puncher type but heavier than people thought....Ray was like the nerdy kid at school no one put much stock into then one day the wrong guy picks on him and he all of a sudden kicks his ass.....Let me explain...
1.Ray had Angelo dundee....smart as they come remember this guy spent how many years with ALI?...Another fighter who hit harder than most gave him respect for....Yet even with him calling the rounds he was going to KO a guy in no one gave it much thought....To his power...Like Ray not a real big puncher but better than average.....
2.They marketed Ray as a pretty boy who can box...Not as a slugger...He moved and danced....He wasn't the go for the KO type guy...When goaded into a fight though Ray could brawl and slug with the best of them....Even after TKO of Hearns and being able to go toe to toe with at the time one of the most feared punchers in the sport no one gave him the respect as a puncher...In fact they chaulked it up as Hearns having a weak chin......
One punch power Ray did not have but he could do damage....

Re: 'Sugar' Ray Leonard heavy handed or not?!
i think leonard punched hard enough to gain respect. leonards strength was his speed and with that speed came his power. the ko of dave "boy" green" was chilling
-
Re: 'Sugar' Ray Leonard heavy handed or not?!
He had enough pop to keep your attention, not really one punch KO, but more of an accummulative effect. I think what helped him out was that nobody expected him to have any type of power.

Re: 'Sugar' Ray Leonard heavy handed or not?!
I believe had a pretty respectable amount of power. I agree with Daxx in saying it was the way he was marketed coming off the olympics and being a pretty boy. But, yeah he had more power than people gave him credit for.

Re: 'Sugar' Ray Leonard heavy handed or not?!
I don't put much merit in ko'ing Donny Lalonde...but all that aside Leonard imo was an average punher power wise...sorta like Pretty boy....he'll score some ko's against guys who dont have great chins but all in all he''s just average power wise

Re: 'Sugar' Ray Leonard heavy handed or not?!
Ray hit harder the Floyd Mayweather. He was a pretty hard puncher. If you look at some of his earlier fights he won by one punch knockout. Ray could punch. He didn't knock out Hagler or Duran but he had respect in those fights or they would have just walked in. Ray's power was his speed and also he was built very solid. That was Ray's deception. Because of how he looked he seemed like he would not punch hard.

Re: 'Sugar' Ray Leonard heavy handed or not?!
he would never ko them two they were two tough sob

Spot on. Most people in HISTORY would struggle to stop them hard bastards!

Re: 'Sugar' Ray Leonard heavy handed or not?!
Ray had exceptional posture, probably from his time in gymnastics. He had a strong groin and lower back which gave him the explosive ability, plus his technique was good. If you got hit a good shot of him you didnt want a second .
-
Re: 'Sugar' Ray Leonard heavy handed or not?!
I said Ray Leonard was "average"...I think his speed and combination punching KO'd people more than his one punch power.
-
Re: 'Sugar' Ray Leonard heavy handed or not?!
I dont think Leonard is heavy handed at all. Heavy handed to me means that there is no particular reason for someone hitting hard, they just do.

Re: 'Sugar' Ray Leonard heavy handed or not?!
Lyle at times you are Hysterical, you come out with some Bollocks
-
Re: 'Sugar' Ray Leonard heavy handed or not?!

.....aaaaaaand?
You can't say Ray had the greatest power and you can't say he was feather fisted....if he had awesome power he would have KO'd Duran and not outboxed him but if he had no power at all how could he hurt guys like Hearns and Benitez???

Not really sure what your trying to say Scrap?
-
Re: 'Sugar' Ray Leonard heavy handed or not?!
Menphis quality fighters dont get hit a lot. Boxing is a skill thing Leonard boxed in an era of good fighters that made you pay if you missed. In that era there was more competition than now competition breeds better fighters. having heavy hands alone against great fighters wont, or didnt get you to far.

Re: 'Sugar' Ray Leonard heavy handed or not?!
Well DUH, Memphis was just asking about the power aspect of Ray's game. He said he could box and move and throw combinations with speed and all that.
His power wasn't p4p great but it was decent....I'd say on par with Mayweather Jr. but not as high as De la Hoya, Mosley, Hearns, Trinidad, Robinson, etc
-
Re: 'Sugar' Ray Leonard heavy handed or not?!
To be honest I think Im on a different page to everyone in this thread ;D For me heavy hands is nothing to do with speed power combo's timing etc etc. Its just there and some fighters have it some dont. Maybe Im not explainingthis too well but I understand it at least ;D
;)
-
Re: 'Sugar' Ray Leonard heavy handed or not?!
Yeah I just don't think Ray had the one punch power like Robinson, Hearns, De la Hoya, or Trinidad....he had more speed power than anything else
-
Re: 'Sugar' Ray Leonard heavy handed or not?!
I would beg to differ. For a period of 4 years he was the best welter Ive seen, I also lost a lot of money betting against him. He use to hurt people with his jab, and always knew where his back foot was
-
Re: 'Sugar' Ray Leonard heavy handed or not?!
Well hurting someone a knocking them out are different things...like I said he was a Great fighter but not the best puncher....his handspeed hurt people more than anything else, he could flurry like a son of a bitch
-
Re: 'Sugar' Ray Leonard heavy handed or not?!
This seems to have spewed into a "was SRL any good" thread. The title asks was he heavy handed. IMO he wasnt heavy handed, nothing like it.
-
Re: 'Sugar' Ray Leonard heavy handed or not?!
Agreed Great fighter but not heavy handed
Heavy handed to me I think of Marvin Hagler, Joe Frazier, George Foreman, Rocky Marciano, etc....those guys didn't have the combination skill that Leonard had
-
Re: 'Sugar' Ray Leonard heavy handed or not?!
Ive talked to about 8 fighters who boxed him, they told me he had heavy hands
-
Re: 'Sugar' Ray Leonard heavy handed or not?!
When Leonard came to Bristol last year I asked him if he considered himself heavy handed. He said no.
Beat that.

I read his journal last week and he wrote that he really thought he is very heavy handed even though one time in Bristol he told someone he wasn't.

Re: 'Sugar' Ray Leonard heavy handed or not?!
I read his thoughts....he might tell people he's heavy handed but he doesn't really believe it
-
Re: 'Sugar' Ray Leonard heavy handed or not?!
he had respectable power bit like evander at heavyweight not 1punch ko artist but hes the got the type of punch to get ur respect and to make u back off or get on ur bike and start dancing around the ring like i said id rate his power 6 out of 10 just bit better than average
-
Re: 'Sugar' Ray Leonard heavy handed or not?!
I cant recall him ever hitting himself
-
Re: 'Sugar' Ray Leonard heavy handed or not?!
Did someone say that Mosley was a hard puncher? Ray Leonard hit harder than MosleyI think. Ray would knock guys out who could not knock him out, Mosley is a rather under average puncher now I think. Good strong inside puncher, but not necessarily a big puncher. He knocked out Vargas you say? Anyone who hits Vargas clean seems to knock him out or down.

Re: 'Sugar' Ray Leonard heavy handed or not?!
I think Ray had very good power.
Because he was a more naturally orientated 'boxer' he did no sit down on his punches as much, but when he wanted to dig he could.

Ray had ALOT more power then PBF at welter IMO. Not even close.

You got it all wrong, guyz. You see, Sugar suffers from one weakness like many or most other good boxers do, that is, when faced with strong or hyped up opponents, they lose their offensive mindedness and becomes less aggressive than they usually do - e.g., the first Duran fight and the perhaps the Hagler one too but maybe that one can be dismissed coz he hadn't fought for about 2 years before that. There are lots of examples, like Trinidad against Hopkins, but the best recent example would be the Castillo-Corrales fight. Remember Corrales showed his real power ONLY when he was cornered like a wounded tiger and there was no way out for him except to attack with all his might. See lots of these fighters have power but most of the time they are sort of intimidated to use, perhaps fearing the Corrales-like retaliation, but don't get me wrong, I didn't mean that when I mentioned his power. I meant that like Corrales, there are many boxers including Sugar Ray who somehow lack the heart to use them especially against strong opponents. If it weren't for this weakness, he would've been the best ever fighter in the history - he had everything else where most others lacked.
But believe me, Sugar had the power to knock out any boxer with his power, even Hagler, but only if he decided to let them loose like when he did to the poor chap LaLonde. He was clearly the one of the best, if not the best, power puncher in the boxing history. Take it from a guy who has been punching most of his life, that's me ;D.
